Refractory-element-rich inclusions in CM meteorites

Refractory-element-rich inclusions of a variety of types occur in CM meteorites. Based on detailed study of Murchison and more limited investigations of Murray, Nogoya, Cold Bokkeveld and Mighei, the most common of these inclusions are small spinel-hibonite bodies rimmed with diopside. Bulk chemical compositions are estimated to be approximately 67% Al2O3, 21% MgO, 5.5% CaO, 5.5% TiO2, and 1% SiO2. Although this chemical composition does not agree closely with current theoretically predicted compositions of early condensate assemblages, the inclusions have many features which suggest that they are indeed early condensates. These include texture, mineralogical composition, sequence of minerals and magnesium isotopic composition of hibonite. The CM refractory inclusions exhibit several differences from those observed in Allende and other CV meteorites. These probably record variations in time, place or physical conditions of origin for the two cases.

Chemistry, mineralogy and petrology of seven greater than 1 mm fragments from Mare Crisium

Results are summarized for a consortium study of the chemistry, mineralogy, and petrology of seven Luna 24 fragments greater than 1 mm in size and having a mass of about 2 mg each. The fragments include four samples of mare ferrobasalt composition, one vitrophyre with the composition of a Mg-rich VLT mare basalt, one agglutinate, and one plagioclase fragment. It is found that: (1) the ferrobasalt is a highly fractionated mare rock very low in alkalis and TiO2, is similar to the less fractionate Apollo 17 VLT basalts, and is quite low in large-ion lithophile trace-element content; (2) the rare-earth-element patterns of the ferrobasalts are typical of VLT basalt, but some ophitic basalts have positive Eu anomalies, while others have negative Eu anomalies typical of mare basalts; and (3) the agglutinate is feldspathic and similar in composition to soil fines in Fe, Cr, Ca, and Al.

Chemistry and petrology of Luna 24 lithic fragments and less than 250-micron soils - Constraints on the origin of VLT mare basalts

Results are reported on a combined INAA-petrologic study of 17 small (0.2-1.5 mg) Luna 24 lithic and mineral fragments and INAA study of 5 bulk soils and mineral separates from gabbro 24170. Lithic and mineral fragments are classified into VLT mare basalts (ferrobasalt and metabasalts), low-Ti, variolitic mare basalt, gabbros, melt rock and soil breccia. Data indicate 5 possible magma types, represented by: (1) VLT ferrobasalt and gabbro fragments, with low-TiO2 (about 1%), slightly bow-shaped REE pattern, and low REE concentrations (5-10X chondritic); (2) a ferrobasalt (Laul et al., 1978) and metabasalt fragments with major and trace element contents similar to (1), but positive Eu anomalies; (3) one gabbro fragment with distinctive pyroxene compositional trend (increasing Ti with nearly constant Fe/Fe + Mg) and highest REE contents of any Luna 24 mare basaltic sample, (4) a gabbro fragment with considerably less V and Cr2O3 than ferrobasalt and metabasalt fragments; and (5) variolitic basalt fragment with higher Ti2(2.3%) than other Luna 24 basalts and pyroxene that has increasing then decreasing Ti with increasing Fe/Fe + Mg. Trace element data place constraints on the nature of the source region and possible parent magmas for the Luna 24 VLT ferrobasalt.

Recognition of lunar glass droplets produced directly from endogenous liquids - The evidence from S-ZN coatings

Concentrated deposits of ultramafic droplets of green glass at Apollo 15 and orange and black glass at Apollo 17 are generally accepted as having volcanic, and so endogenous, origins. Since these droplets have S + Zn surface coatings with characteristics that fit a volcanic origin, the presence of similar coatings on dispersed droplets are taken as a good criterion of their volcanic origin. This criterion in concert with other criteria (homogeneity, absence of shocked relicts) that distinguish between volcanic and impact origins, has led to identification of a new ultramafic endogenous liquid that was erupted at Apollo 15. The brown glass droplets representing this liquid have a higher TiO2 content and are more mafic than any of the Apollo 15 basalts.

Mare basalt types on the front side of the moon - A summary of spectral reflectance data

A unit map of nearside basalt types has been prepared from all telescopic spectral reflectance data currently available for lunar soils. Four parameters were chosen (UV/VIS ratio, albedo, 1 micron band strength, 2 micron band strength) to distinguish and map each of 13 mare basalt types and three additional volcanic groups. Multispectral imagery and albedo maps were used to define unit boundaries while spectra were used to examine the 1 and 2 micron bands and calibrate and quantify the multispectral images. Although the volume of each basalt type is not known, it is clear from the unit map that only 1/3 to 1/2 of the surface basalt types are likely to be represented in the returned lunar samples. For mature lunar soils a single parameter alone does not provide chemical information, but when the four are used together, TiO2 and in some cases FeO can be estimated. Further study of the mineralogy of unsampled lunar basalts requires precise spectra to 2.5 microns with higher spectra and spatial resolution.

Petrogenesis of Luna 16 aluminous mare basalts

Bulk compositions, petrology and mineralogy of Luna 16 aluminous mare basalt particles of less than 0.5 mm are described. The data rule out any close genetic relationships between Luna 16 and other major types of lunar mare basalts. Compared to high-Ti mare basalts, the Luna 16 basalts contain lower TiO2 and Ta and higher Al2O3 and REE abundances, suggesting that the Luna 16 source rocks crystallized later than (i.e. stratigraphically above) the ilmenite-bearing high-Ti basalt cumulate source rocks. The REE pattern for the Luna 16 basalts requires that the source material from which they were derived crystallized from a light REE enriched magma.

Apollo 17 high-Ti mare basalts - New bulk compositional data, magma types, and petrogenesis

Bulk compositional and mineral chemical data for 28 previously unanalyzed samples support the classification of Apollo-17 high-Ti mare basalts into three-types (A, B, and C), defined on the basis of analyses of fine-grained basalts. The most MgO- and TiO2-rich fine-grained basalts of these types appear to be the best choices for representing the compositions of the parent magmas.

One atmosphere melting experiments on ilmenite basalt 12008

An evaluation of a crystal-fractionation model for Apollo 12 ilmenite basalts with melting experiments under controlled oxygen fugacities is reported. The crystallization sequence including olivine, chromium spinel, and pigeonite phases was determined, showing that the changes in melt composition are dominated by olivine crystallization and the decrease in MgO with a corresponding increase in CaO, Al2O3, and TiO2. It is concluded that the bulk composition of the ilmenite basalts was established by crystallization of olivine and minor spinel prior to the onset of pyroxene and plagioclase.

Spectra of Fe-Ti silicate glasses - Implications to remote-sensing of planetary surfaces

Optical spectra of synthetic Fe-Ti silicate glasses and the temperature variations of the spectral features were investigated. The spectra are assigned to absorptions due to crystal field (CF) transitions in Ti(3+), Fe(2+) in octahedral coordination, and Fe(2+) in tetrahedral coordination, and to metal-metal and oxygen-metal charge transfer (CT) transitions which contribute to the near ultraviolet absorption edge. Temperature variations of the optical bands have been studied to explore implications for remote sensing. Caution is urged in the use of the absorption edge as a measure of TiO2 concentrations on planetary surfaces and in regolith samples.

Metamorphism of the H-group chondrites - Implications from compositional and textural trends in chondrules

The paper discusses element bulk compositions of 373 chondrules from 18 H3 to H6 chondrites determined by broad-beam electron probe analysis. Bulk chondrule FeO and Al2O3 amounts increase and TiO2 and Cr2O3 decrease with increasing petrologic type; normative faylite, albite, and plagioclase amounts increase through the petrologic sequence. Chondrule diameters correlate with phenocryst sizes in porphyritic chondrules of type 3 chondrites, but this correlation is diminished in the higher petrologic types. The compositional trends in chondrules through the petrologic sequence are attributed to diffusion and equilibration among chondrules, and between chondrules and matrix in response to increasing degrees of thermal metamorphism. It is suggested that H-group chondrites are formed by accretion of high-temperature (chondrules) and low-temperature (matrix) materials. Internal reheating of the parent materials to different temperatures caused compositional equilibration, grain coarsening, and reduction of FeO to Fe(0) by carbon.

Predicting major element mineral/melt equilibria - A statistical approach

Empirical equations have been developed for calculating the mole fractions of NaO0.5, MgO, AlO1.5, SiO2, KO0.5, CaO, TiO2, and FeO in a solid phase of initially unknown identity given only the composition of the coexisting silicate melt. The approach involves a linear multivariate regression analysis in which solid composition is expressed as a Taylor series expansion of the liquid compositions. An internally consistent precision of approximately 0.94 is obtained, that is, the nature of the liquidus phase in the input data set can be correctly predicted for approximately 94% of the entries. The composition of the liquidus phase may be calculated to better than 5 mol % absolute. An important feature of this 'generalized solid' model is its reversibility; that is, the dependent and independent variables in the linear multivariate regression may be inverted to permit prediction of the composition of a silicate liquid produced by equilibrium partial melting of a polymineralic source assemblage.

An investigation of adhesive/adherend and fiber matrix interactions

Research during the report period focused on continued scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of lap shear samples and flatwise tensile specimens and on the surface characterization of TiO2, Ti 6-4, and Ti powders with particular emphasis on their interaction with primer solutions of both polyphenylquinoxaline and LaRC-13 polyimide. The use of SEM and XPS in the analysis of Ti 6-4 adherend surfaces is described as well as differences in Ti 6-4 surface composition after different chemical pretreatments. Analysis of fractured surfaces is used to established the failure mode. The surface acidity of Ti 6-4 coupons can be established by reflectance visible spectroscopy using indicator dyes.

Chondrules in H3 chondrites - Textures, compositions and origins

Compositional and textural variations among chondrules in unequilibrated (type 3) H-group chondrites are examined in order to determine possible relations between chondrule compositions and textures. Bulk compositions of polished thin sections of 90 individual chondrules and 16 compound chondrule sets from the Sharps, Tieschitz and Bremervorde chondrites were measured by broad-beam electron probe analyses; the chondrules were also classified petrographically as barred olivine, porphyritic olivine, porphyritic pyroxene, barred pyroxene, radiating pyroxene or fine-grained. The mean compositions of each type are found to be distinct as verified by discriminant analysis, despite a large scatter, with the olivine-rich chondrules characterized by low SiO2 and high FeO and MgO contents, greater concentrations of TiO2, Al2O3, Na2O and K2O, and lower Cr2O3 and MnO relative to pyroxene-rich chondrules. Data suggest that composition, together with cooling rate, has played a conspicuous role in producing observed chrondrule textures, and are consistent with chondrule formation from mixtures of differing fractions of high-, intermediate- and low-temperature nebular condensates that underwent melting in space.

Assessment of high temperature metallizations for I(2)L and CMOS technologies

High temperature barrier metallizations were assessed and tested for I(2)L and CMOS applications. Life tests were accelerated to 375 C in view of the -55 C to +300 C temperature range established for engine-located electronics without fuel cooling. The gold-refractory metallizations evaluated were Au-TiW-PtSi, Au-TiW/TiO2/TiW-PtSi and Au-TiW(N)-PtSi. These metallization systems were thermally annealed to at least 375 C for up to 250 hours. The critical requirement for stable diffusion barrier is the TiW grain size. Small grain (250A-500A) films were observed to be stable up to 375 C. Deposition to TiW diffusion barrier in the presence of oxygen and nitrogen also results in an effective diffusion barrier. Auger electron spectroscopy profiles of the PtSi indicates some penetration by the TiW. In the case of PtSi/TiW interface, the redistribution of oxygen further passivates the system by forming a TiO2 layer at the interface.

Containerless preparation of advanced optical glasses: Experiment 77F095

Containerless processing of optical glasses was studied in preparation for space shuttle MEA flight experiments. Ground based investigation, experiment/hardware coordination activities and development of flight experiment and sample characterization plans were investigated. In the ground based investigation over 100 candidate glass materials for space processing were screened and promising compositions were identified. The system of Nb2O5-TiO2-CaO was found to be very rich with containerless glass compositions and as extensive number of the oxides combinations were tried resulting in a glass formation ternary phase diagram. The frequent occurrence of glass formation by containerless processing among the compositions for which no glass formations were previously reported indicated the possibility and an advantage of containerless processing in a terrestrial environment.
