Production and Improved Separation of Therapeutic Radionuclides Tb-161, Er-165, and Lu-177

This project resulted in the synthesis and utility of new solid-phase extractants using diglycolamide (DGA) extractants grafted onto mesoporous silica. We used DGA ligands that offer multidentate coordination sites for lanthanides and offer pre-arranged binding sites that may facilitate radiolanthanide metal binding. Also, the Hunter graduate student worked at University of Utah on production and separation of 161 Tb with high specific activity resulting in a publication. These are reported in the full text upload.

Radiative transition probabilities of neutral and singly ionized rare earth elements (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) estimated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential to society given their prevalence in many modern technologies. Quantitative elemental analysis of REEs is therefore a critical capability. Calibration free–laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) is a rapidly maturing and promising approach to quantitative elemental analysis with many attractive qualities. The application of CF-LIBS to analyzing samples containing the REEs is hindered by a lack of fundamental data, specifically transition probabilities (TPs). As such, this study seeks to help address this knowledge deficiency by reporting 967 previously unreported TPs for 13 REEs (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium). The method developed in this study to estimate the TPs requires small amounts of material (a few nanograms) compared with other approaches (~ milligrams), uses non-specialized equipment, and does not involve complicated sample preparations.

The chemical and physical properties of tetravalent lanthanides: Pr, Nd, Tb, and Dy

The fundamental redox chemistry and valence electronic structure of the lanthanides in molecular complexes and extended solids continues to be a fertile area of research. The contemporary understanding of the accessible oxidation states of the lanthanide elements and the variability in their electronic structure is the result of several paradigm shifts. While the lanthanide elements have already found widespread use in technical and consumer applications, the continued reevaluation of basic redox properties is a central chemical concern to establish a more complete description of periodic properties. This fundamental understanding of valence electronic structure as it is derived from oxidation state and coordination environment is essential for the continued development of lanthanides in quantum information science and quantum materials research. This review presents the chemical and physical properties of tetravalent lanthanide ions in extended solids and molecules with a focus on the elements apart from cerium: praseodymium, neodymium, terbium, and dysprosium.

Atomic layer molecular beam epitaxy of kagome magnet RMn6Sn6 (R = Er, Tb) thin films

Kagome lattices have garnered substantial interest because their band structure consists of topological flat bands and Dirac cones. The RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth) compounds are particularly interesting because of the existence of the large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which originates from the gapped Dirac cones near the Fermi level. This makes RMn6Sn6 an outstanding candidate for realizing the high-temperature quantum AHE. The growth of RMn6Sn6 thin films is beneficial for both fundamental research and potential applications. However, most of the studies on RMn6Sn6 have focused on bulk crystals, and the synthesis of RMn6Sn6 thin films has not been reported so far. Here, we report the atomic layer molecular beam epitaxy growth, structural and magnetic characterizations, and transport properties of ErMn6Sn6 and TbMn6Sn6 thin films. It is especially noteworthy that TbMn6Sn6 thin films have out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, which is important for realizing the quantum AHE. Our work paves the avenue toward the control of the AHE using devices patterned from RMn6Sn6 thin films.
