sPHENIX Highlights: First Results from sPHENIX at RHIC

First results from the sPHENIX experiment on the π 0 v 2 and dE T =dη in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV using detector commissioning data during the RHIC 2023 Run are presented. These results are shown across a large centrality range, and compared to previous PHENIX and STAR results. These measurements demonstrate the sPHENIX capabilities towards accomplishing the sPHENIX jet physics program. From the ongoing RHIC 2024 Run, p + p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV, a first glimpse of the measurements K S 0 and Λ 0 obtained by the sPHENIX Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector are shown.

Xenon doping of Liquid Argon in ProtoDUNE Single Phase: first results

Doping Liquid Argon (LAr) with xenon is a known technique to shift the light emitted by argon (128 nm) to a longer wavelength to ease its detection. The largest Xenon doping test ever performed in a LArTPC was carried out in ProtoDUNE Single Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) at the CERN Neutrino Platform. The response of such a large TPC (7701 of Liquid Argon and 4401 of fiducial mass) has been studied using the ProtoDUNE Photon Detection System (PDS) and a dedicated setup installed before the run. With the first, it was possible to study the light detected in the system as a function of the xenon concentration and to characterise the light collection efficiency with respect to the track position. With the second system it was possible to disentangle the LAr (128 nm) light from the xenon (178 nm) light using two dedicated X-ARAPUCA modules. The run was fully satisfactory, it was possible to measure directly the increase of the xenon light component during doping; furthermore most of the LAr light quenched by impurities was fully recovered even at small Xenon concentration (< 20 ppm in mass). A study of the collected scintillation light as a function of the track position showed an improvement of the detector response uniformity.

Purity monitoring for ProtoDUNE-SP

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment is a next-generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based on liquid argon time projection chamber technology. DUNE-s single-phase prototype ProtoDUNE-SP at CERN finished its two-year Phase-1 running in July 2021, successfully collected test-beam and cosmic ray data. A key aspect of LArTPC calibration is the lifetime of drift electrons. A purity monitor is a miniature TPC measuring the lifetime of electrons generated from the photocathode via the photoelectric effect. It enables continuous monitoring of the detector status, especially when filling the cryostat and when liquid argon recirculation systems operate. The purity monitoring system in ProtoDUNE-SP Phase-1 monitored liquid argon purity throughout its entire lifetime. It is essential to the experiment’s successful commissioning, operation, and data taking. This poster discusses the design, implementation, and results of purity monitors and plans.

Time Projection Chambers instrumented with resistive MicroMegas for the SAND near detector of DUNE

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation long-baseline neutrino accelerator experiment aiming for precise measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters. DUNE will include a near detector complex regrouping three different detectors among which SAND (System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection) that will be the only one permanently on the neutrino beam axis in charge of monitoring in detail the emitted neutrino beam and its stability through time, a crucial characteristic to realize accurate oscillation measurements at the percent level. SAND will reuse the superconducting magnet and the electromagnetic calorimeter of the KLOE experiment. We will describe in the following the proposal of using, as inner tracker of SAND, a large 3D matrix of 1.5cm side scintillator cubes (3DST) surrounded by 3 gaseous Time Projection Chambers. This setup allows to realize accurate beam monitoring combining the 3DST unprecedented capability of neutron detection and energy measurement with the high precision momentum resolution for charged particles offered by the TPCs. The proposed TPC design allows to reach spatial resolutions of a few hundreds of micrometers using 1 cm pads by deploying the resistive MicroMegas technology for the charge readout.

Slicing with deep learning models at ProtoDUNE-SP

DUNE is a cutting-edge experiment aiming to study neutrinos in detail, with a special focus on the flavor oscillation mechanism. The prototype of the DUNE Far Detector Single Phase TPC (ProtoDUNE-SP) was built and operated at CERN with a full set of reconstruction tools. To implement these reconstruction tools, Pandora, a multi-algorithm framework, has been developed. A large number of these algorithms, some of them being exploiting traditional clustering, detector physics and deep learning approaches, have been applied to images to gradually build up a picture out of singular events. One of such algorithms is the Pandora slicing algorithm which aims to partition the detector hits of an event in sets called slices. Each slice represents a single interaction in the detector and should identify all the hits related to the interacting particle and its subsequent decay products. We expect the order of tens of slices per event in ProtoDUNE-SP. In this paper we present a deep learning approach to the problem, designing a model able to outperform the state-of-the-art slicing algorithm which is currently implemented within Pandora. We assess the performance of our tool in terms of efficiency and accuracy, while exploiting hardware accelerating setups. The ultimate goal is to incorporate this deep learning approach in the Pandora reconstruction tool.

First Calorimetric Energy Reconstruction of Beam Events with ARAPUCA Light Detector in ProtoDUNE-SP

ProtoDUNE Single Phase at CERN is the large scale prototype for the far detector of the future DUNE experiment. ProtoDUNE is in stable operation since Oct. 2018 at the CERN Neutrino Platform. Test beam data in the energy range of sub-GeV to a few GeV were collected in fall 2018 providing a set of key measurements. Particles (electrons, protons, pions, muons and kaons) are identified combining information from a set of beam-line detectors (Time of Flight, Cherenkov) and TPC reconstruction. Three different technologies are implemented in the protoDUNE photon detector system (PDS). Results from the ARAPUCA response, one of the PDS components, are presented providing first calorimetric energy measurements and particle ID of beam events from LAr scintillation light signals.

Calibration of the charge and energy loss per unit length of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber using muons and protons

In this paper, we describe a method used to calibrate the position- and time-dependent response of the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber anode wires to ionization particle energy loss. The method makes use of crossing cosmic-ray muons to partially correct anode wire signals for multiple effects as a function of time and position, including cross-connected TPC wires, space charge effects, electron attachment to impurities, diffusion, and recombination. The overall energy scale is then determined using fully-contained beam-induced muons originating and stopping in the active region of the detector. Using this method, we obtain an absolute energy scale uncertainty of 2% in data. We use stopping protons to further refine the relation between the measured charge and the energy loss for highly-ionizing particles. This data-driven detector calibration improves both the measurement of total deposited energy and particle identification based on energy loss per unit length as a function of residual range. As an example, the proton selection efficiency is increased by 2% after detector calibration.

Design and performance of a 35-ton liquid argon time projection chamber as a prototype for future very large detectors

Liquid argon time projection chamber technology is an attractive choice for large neutrino detectors, as it provides a high-resolution active target and it is expected to be scalable to very large masses. Consequently, it has been chosen as the technology for the first module of the DUNE far detector. However, the fiducial mass required for “far detectors” of the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments far exceeds what has been demonstrated so far. Scaling to this larger mass, as well as the requirement for underground construction places a number of additional constraints on the design. A prototype 35-ton cryostat was built at Fermi National Acccelerator Laboratory to test the functionality of the components foreseen to be used in a very large far detector. The Phase I run, completed in early 2014, demonstrated that liquid argon could be maintained at sufficient purity in a membrane cryostat. A time projection chamber was installed for the Phase II run, which collected data in February and March of 2016. The Phase II run was a test of the modular anode plane assemblies with wrapped wires, cold readout electronics, and integrated photon detection systems. While the details of the design do not match exactly those chosen for the DUNE far detector, the 35-ton TPC prototype is a demonstration of the functionality of the basic components. Measurements are performed using the Phase II data to extract signal and noise characteristics and to align the detector components. A measurement of the electron lifetime is presented, and a novel technique for measuring a track's position based on pulse properties is described.

A method to determine the electric field of liquid argon time projection chambers using a UV laser system and its application in MicroBooNE

Liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) are now a standard detector technology for making accelerator neutrino measurements, due to their high material density, precise tracking, and calorimetric capabilities. An electric field (E-field) is required in such detectors to 2020 JINST 15 P07010 drift ionization electrons to the anode where they are collected. The E-field of a TPC is often approximated to be uniform between the anode and the cathode planes. However, significant distortions can appear from effects such as mechanical deformations, electrode failures, or the accumulation of space charge generated by cosmic rays. The latter effect is particularly relevant for detectors placed near the Earth’s surface and with large drift distances and long drift time. To determine the E-field in situ, an ultraviolet (UV) laser system is installed in the MicroBooNE experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The purpose of this system is to provide precise measurements of the E-field, and to make it possible to correct for 3D spatial distortions due to E-field non-uniformities. Here we describe the methodology developed for deriving spatial distortions, the drift velocity and the E-field from UV-laser measurements.

Neutrino event selection in the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber using Wire-Cell 3D imaging, clustering, and charge-light matching

An accurate and efficient event reconstruction is required to realize the full scientific capability of liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The current and future neutrino experiments that rely on massive LArTPCs create a need for new ideas and reconstruction approaches. Wire-Cell, proposed in recent years, is a novel tomographic event reconstruction method for LArTPCs. The Wire-Cell 3D imaging approach capitalizes on charge, sparsity, time, and geometry information to reconstruct a topology-agnostic 3D image of the ionization electrons prior to pattern recognition. A second novel method, the many-to-many charge-light matching, then pairs the TPC charge activity to the detected scintillation light signal, thus enabling a powerful rejection of cosmic-ray muons in the MicroBooNE detector. A robust processing of the scintillation light signal and an appropriate clustering of the reconstructed 3D image are fundamental to this technique. In this paper, we describe the principles and algorithms of these techniques and their successful application in the MicroBooNE experiment. A quantitative evaluation of the performance of these techniques is presented. Using these techniques, a 95% efficient pre-selection of neutrino charged-current events is achieved with a 30-fold reduction of non-beam-coincident cosmic-ray muons, and about 80% of the selected neutrino charged-current events are reconstructed with at least 70% completeness and 80% purity.

Cosmic ray muon clustering for the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber using sMask-RCNN

In this article, we describe a modified implementation of Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask-RCNN) for cosmic ray muon clustering in a liquid argon TPC and applied to MicroBooNE neutrino data. Our implementation of this network, called sMask-RCNN, uses sparse submanifold convolutions to increase processing speed on sparse datasets, and is compared to the original dense version in several metrics. The networks are trained to use wire readout images from the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber as input and produce individually labeled particle interactions within the image. These outputs are identified as either cosmic ray muon or electron neutrino interactions. We find that sMask-RCNN has an average pixel clustering efficiency of 85.9% compared to the dense network's average pixel clustering efficiency of 89.1%. We demonstrate the ability of sMask-RCNN used in conjunction with MicroBooNE's state-of-the-art Wire-Cell cosmic tagger to veto events containing only cosmic ray muons. The addition of sMask-RCNN to the Wire-Cell cosmic tagger removes 70% of the remaining cosmic ray muon background events at the same electron neutrino event signal efficiency. Furthermore, this event veto can provide 99.7% rejection of cosmic ray-only background events while maintaining an electron neutrino event-level signal efficiency of 80.1%. In addition to cosmic ray muon identification, sMask-RCNN could be used to extract features and identify different particle interaction types in other 3D-tracking detectors.

Energy resolution of the LZ detector for high-energy electronic recoils

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) detector is a dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC) installed at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (Lead, South Dakota) at a depth of 1478 meters. Although the main objective of LZ is the direct detection of dark matter, its low background environment allows for the search of other rare processes, such as the neutrinoless double beta decay of xenon isotopes 134 Xe and 136 Xe with the respective Q-values of 826 keV and 2458 keV. The sensitivity of the detector to these decays is directly determined by the energy resolution, which, in turn, is degraded by non-uniformities in detector response. In this work, we present a novel method to correct, in the data, the non-uniformity of the light collected by an array of photosensors in a scintillation detector. This method is based on the knowledge of the light response functions of individual photosensors. With these techniques, we report, at a very early phase of the detector operations, a state-of-the-art energy resolution (σ/μ) of (0.67 ± 0.01)% at 2614 keV for the fiducial volume of 5.6 tonnes of liquid xenon.

3D track reconstruction of low-energy electrons in the MIGDAL low pressure optical time projection chamber

Here, we demonstrate three-dimensional track reconstruction of electrons in a low pressure (50 Torr) optical TPC consisting of two glass GEMs with an ITO strip readout in CF 4 and CF 4 /Ar mixtures. The reconstructed tracks show a variety of event topologies, including short tracks from photoelectrons induced by 55 Fe 5.9 keV X-rays and long tracks from gamma ray interactions and beta decays. Algorithms for event identification and track ridge detection are discussed as well as multiple methods for integrating information from the camera image and ITO waveforms with the goal of full 3D reconstruction of the track.

Secondary scintillation properties of multi-layer THGEMs operated in low-pressure CF 4 and Ar/5%Xe

We present a measurement of the secondary scintillation yield produced by two-layer Thick Gas Electron Multipliers (M-THGEMs) in pure Tetrafluoromethane (CF 4 ) gas and in Ar mixed with 5% Xe in low-pressures down to 20 Torr. The detector was irradiated with 5.49 MeV alpha particles from a low-rate 241-Am source. The secondary scintillation light generated during the gas avalanche process was read out by a Hamamatsu photomultiplier tube (model R8520-406), sensitive to a broad wavelength range (160–650 nm). The avalanche charge was collected on the bottom electrode of M-THGEM and correlated to the scintillation light on an event-by-event basis. We observed that, for both gas types, the value of the photon to electron production ratio (0.4 ph/el in CF 4 and 0.1 ph/el in Ar/5%Xe) increases with the thickness of the M-THGEM electrodes and varies significantly with the pressure, being higher at lower values. The decrease in electroluminescence yield at higher pressures is much more pronounced in the Ar/Xe mixture. In addition, because of a larger gas avalanche volume, the electroluminescence light yield is larger in thicker M-THGEM structures. Presented results are particularly useful for designing the next generation of Optical-readout Time Projection Chambers (O-TPCs) operated at low-pressure CF 4 ; applications include experimental nuclear physics with rare isotope beams, dark matter detection with directional sensitivity and observation of the Migdal effect in a low-pressure Optical TPC.

Muon energy reconstruction for applications in neutrino astronomy in the DUNE far detector

Abstract DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) is a proposed long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located in the United States. The main physics objectives of DUNE are to measure neutrino oscillations and interactions, search for nucleon decay, observe supernova neutrino bursts and beyond Standard Model (BSM) effects. The DUNE far detector will be located 4850 feet underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. It will house the world's largest liquid-argon time projection chambers (TPC). The DUNE far detector can detect high-energy leptons that arise from interactions of cosmogenic neutrinos and search for neutrinos originating from the decay of weakly-interactive massive particles (WIMPs) annihilations occurring inside the Sun. Selecting upward-going muons reduces the background from cosmic-ray muons. The muon energy is estimated from the electromagnetic showers accompanying the muon, a technique that allows energy reconstruction up to a few hundred TeV.

Towards a fiber barrel detector for next-generation high-pressure gaseous xenon TPCs

Abstract The NEXT (Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon TPC) project is an international collaboration aimed at finding evidence of neutrinoless double beta decay using gaseous xenon. The current phase of the project involves the construction and operation of NEXT-100, which is designed to hold 100 kg of xenon at 15 bar and is expected to start commissioning in the first quarter of 2024. NEXT-HD will be a tonne scale experiment following NEXT-100 and will incorporate a symmetric design, with one cathode and two anodes. For this detector, the collaboration is considering to implement a barrel of wavelength-shifting fibers read-out by silicon photomultipliers to measure the energy of the particles interacting in the gaseous xenon. In this document, we will discuss the characteristics of this approach and provide an update on the related R&D efforts.

Angular dependent measurement of electron-ion recombination in liquid argon for ionization calorimetry in the ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber

This paper reports on a measurement of electron-ion recombination in liquid argon in the ICARUS liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). A clear dependence of recombination on the angle of the ionizing particle track relative to the drift electric field is observed. An ellipsoid modified box (EMB) model of recombination describes the data across all measured angles. These measurements are used for the calorimetric energy scale calibration of the ICARUS TPC, which is also presented. The impact of the EMB model is studied on calorimetric particle identification, as well as muon and proton energy measurements. Accounting for the angular dependence in EMB recombination improves the accuracy and precision of these measurements.

Design and implementation of the cosmic ray tagger system for the ICARUS detector at FNAL

The ICARUS-T600 Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber is operating at Fermilab at shallow depth and thus exposed to a high flux of cosmic rays that can fake neutrino interactions. A cosmic ray tagging (CRT) system (∼ 1100 m 2 ), surrounding the cryostat with two layers of fiber embedded plastic scintillators, was developed to mitigate the cosmic ray induced background. Using nanosecond-level timing information, the CRT can distinguish incoming cosmic rays from outgoing particles from neutrino interactions in the TPC. In this paper an overview of the CRT system, its installation and commissioning at Fermilab, and its performance are discussed.
