The systematic radial downflow in the transition region of the quiet sun from limb-to-limb observations of the C IV resonance lines

This paper presents absolute velocities of C IV 1548, 1550 nm measured as a function of position along the solar equator, which was free of both active regions and coronal holes, and uniformly representative of the quiet sun. These observations were made with moderate spatial resolution (18 arcsec) using an EUV spectrometer dedicated to measuring absolute wavelengths (velocities) by direct comparison with a platinum spectrum generated on board the sounding rocket. On the assumption that systematic horizontal motions cancel statistically so that the line-of-sight velocities approach zero at the limb, a net radial downflow of 7.5 + or - 1.0 km/sec was found. The assumption was tested using the wavelength reference and found to be valid within the absolute accuracy of the rest wavelengths of the C IV lines.

Systematic errors in the annual and intraseasonal variations of the planetary-scale divergent circulation in NMC medium-range forecasts

The systematic error in the National Meteorological Center's (NMC) medium-range operational forecasts of the global divergence during 1987 and 1988 is examined in this study. As in other operational NWP models the NMC model has too weak an annual mean, annual cycle, and 30-60 day oscillation. This weakness shows up after only a few days, especially over the monsoon region and tropical areas. When the intraseasonal oscillation amplitude is large the model predictive skill is improved. The eastward propagation of the low-frequency mode is well predicted throughout the 10-day forecast period. The north-south migration of the tropical Hadley circulation, depicted primarily by the annual-cycle mode, is also weaker although the phase pattern predicted by the MRF is consistent with analyses.

Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic systematics of ureilites

The present evaluation of Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic data for seven ureilites establishes their divisions into three groups on the bases of Sm-Nd isotopic systematics. The first group of ureilites is made up of whole-rock samples whose highly depleted assemblages indicate Sm-Nd model ages consistent with 4.55 Ga. The second group of whole-rock samples of Kenna, Novo Urei, and ALHA77257 are heterogeneous mixtures of an unidentified light REE-enriched component and a light REE-depleted olivine-pyroxene assemblage. In the third group, LEW85440 neither has a model Sm-Nd age of 4.55 Ga nor plots of the 3.74 Ga isochron of the Kenna group; it might have had an evolution similar to the Kenna group, but involving different times and/or isotopic compositions.

Systematic Disturbance Of Optimal Rotational Trajectory

Algorithm introduces systematic disturbance into otherwise optimal rotation of body from prescribed initial to prescribed final orientation. Disturbance introduced as deviation of actual axis of rotation from optimal one, like wobble of top. Algorithm effects rotational transformations and solves differential equations necessary to compute disturbed trajectory. Devised for use with motion-control program and three-dimensional computer-graphical display to study ability of observers to distinguish between optimal and suboptimal rotational trajectories.

U-Th-Pb, Rb-Sr, and Sm-Nd isotopic systematics of lunar troctolitic cumulate 76535 - Implications on the age and origin of this early lunar, deep-seated cumulate

The U-Th-Pb, Rb-Sr, and Sm-Nd isotopic systematics of four lightly leached residues of pristine, high-Mg, troctolitic cumulate 76535 were analyzed in order to determine their ages and magma sources. The data indicate that the cumulate was in isotopic equilibrium with a fluid or magma characterized by a high U-238/Pb-204 (mu) value of 600 at 4.236 Ga. Two and three stage Pb evolution calculations define even greater source mu values of about 1000, assuming low lunar initial mu values between 5 and 40 prior to about 4.43 Ga. These results are similar to mu values for KREEP sources and are also consistent with values from 78235, suggesting that at least some high-Mg suite rocks were derived from magma sources with high-mu values similar to KREEP, and support that idea that these rocks postdate primary lunar differentiation and formation of ferroan anorthosites.

Intelligent process mapping through systematic improvement of heuristics

The present system for automatic learning/evaluation of novel heuristic methods applicable to the mapping of communication-process sets on a computer network has its basis in the testing of a population of competing heuristic methods within a fixed time-constraint. The TEACHER 4.1 prototype learning system implemented or learning new postgame analysis heuristic methods iteratively generates and refines the mappings of a set of communicating processes on a computer network. A systematic exploration of the space of possible heuristic methods is shown to promise significant improvement.

A systematic investigation of edge-on starburst galaxies: Evidence for supernova-driven superwinds

We are completing a project designed to realistically assess the global/cosmological significance of superwinds by attempting to systematize our understanding of them (determine their incidence rate and the dependence of their properties on the star-formation that drives them). Specifically, we are analyzing data from an optical spectroscopic and narrow-band imaging survey of an infrared flux-limited sample of about 50 starburst galaxies whose stellar disks are viewed nearly edge-on. This edge-on orientation is crucial because the relevant properties of the superwind can be far more easily measured when the flow is seen in isolation against the sky rather than projected onto the much brighter gas associated with the starburst galaxy itself.

Systematic Processing of Clementine Data for Scientific Analyses

If fully successful, the Clementine mission will return about 3,000,000 lunar images and more than 5000 images of Geographos. Effective scientific analyses of such large datasets require systematic processing efforts. Concepts for two such efforts are described: glogal multispectral imaging of the moon; and videos of Geographos.

COBE Differential Microwave Radiometers - Preliminary systematic error analysis

The techniques available for the identification and subtraction of sources of dynamic uncertainty from data of the Differential Microwave Radiometer (DMR) instrument aboard COBE are discussed. Preliminary limits on the magnitude in the DMR 1 yr maps are presented. Residual uncertainties in the best DMR sky maps, after correcting the raw data for systematic effects, are less than 6 micro-K for the pixel rms variation, less than 3 micro-K for the rms quadruple amplitude of a spherical harmonic expansion, and less than 30 micro-(K-squared) for the correlation function.

Evidence from coupled (Sm-147)-(Nd-143) and (Sm-146)-(Nd-142) systematics for very early (4.5-Gyr) differentiation of the earth's mantle

Evidence for early differentiation of the earth's mantle is presented based on measurements of Nd-143/Nd-144 and Nd-142/Nd-144 ratios in an approximately 3.8 Gyr-old supracrustal rock from Isua, West Greenland. Coupled (Sm-146,147)-(Nd-142,143) systematics suggest that the fractionation of Sm/Nd took place 4.44-4.54 Gyr ago, due to extraction of a light rare earth element-enriched primordial crust.

Systematic investigation of Joukowsky wing sections

Ackeret began systematic polar measurements on Joukowsky wing sections, which were occasionally conducted in the wind tunnel. Under these conditions a considerable number of wing sections were tested during the last four years and the tests are now more or less concluded.

Model tests with a systematic series of 27 wing sections at full Reynolds number

A systematic series of 27 wing sections, characterized by a small travel of the center or pressure, have been investigated at 20 atmospheres pressure in the variable density wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The results are consistent with each other, and indicate that for such "stable" sections a small effective camber, a small effective S-shape and a thickness of 8 to 12 per cent lead to good aerodynamic properties.

Free-Spinning Wind-Tunnel Tests of a Low-Wing Monoplane with Systematic Changes in Wings and Tails IV : Effect of Center-of-Gravity Location

Eight wings and three tails, covering a wide range of aerodynamic characteristics, were independently ballasted so as to be interchangeable with no change in mass distribution. For each of the 24 resulting wing-tail combinations, observations were made of the steady spin for four control settings and of recoveries for five control manipulations. The results are presented in the form of charts comparing the spin characteristics. The tests are part of a general investigation being made in the NACA free-spinning tunnel to determine the effects of systematic changes in wing and tail arrangement upon the steady-spin and the recovery characteristics of a conventional low-wing monoplane for various load distributions.

Investigation of a Systematic Group of NACA 1-Series Cowlings with and Without Spinners

Report presents the results of an investigation conducted in the Langley propeller research tunnel to study cowling-spinner combinations based on the NACA 1-series nose inlets and to obtain systematic design data for one family of approximately ellipsoidal spinners. In the main part of the investigation, 11 of the related spinners were tested in various combinations with 9 NACA open-nose cowlings, which were also tested without spinners. The effects of location and shape of the spinner, shape of the inner surface of the cowling lip, and operation of a propeller having approximately oval shanks were investigated briefly. In addition, a study was conducted to determine the correct procedure for extrapolating design conditions determined from the low-speed test data to the design conditions at the actual flight Mach number.

Systematic Two-Dimensional Cascade Tests of NACA 65-Series Compressor Blades at Low Speeds

The performance of NACA 65-series compressor blade section in cascade has been investigated systematically in a low-speed cascade tunnel. Porous test-section side walls and for high-pressure-rise conditions, porous flexible end walls were employed to establish conditions closely simulating two-dimensional flow. Blade sections of design lift coefficients from 0 to 2.7 were tested over the usable angle-of-attack range for various combinations of inlet-flow angle. A sufficient number of combinations were tested to permit interpolation and extrapolation of the data to all conditions within the usual range of application. The results of this investigation indicate a continuous variation of blade-section performance as the major cascade parameters, blade camber, inlet angle, and solidity were varied over the test range. Summary curves of the results have been prepared to enable compressor designers to select the proper blade camber and angle of attack when the compressor velocity diagram and desired solidity have been determined.

Systematic Airfoil Tests in the Large Wind Tunnel of the DVL

The present report is a description of systematic tests at maximum lift on airfoils with and without split flap and of profile drag at low lift. In order to obtain an opinion as to the suitability of the airfoils with flaps, the maximum-lift measurements were repeated on airfoils with split flaps. The profile drag at low lift was arrived at by direct weighing and momentum measurements and, since the profiles were of unusual depth, extended to large Reynolds numbers.

Rhenium-osmium isotope systematics of Group 2A and Group 4A iron meteorites

We are investigating the Re-Os isotope systematics of two groups of magmatic iron meteorites (2A, 4A) in an attempt to establish precise 'total rock' isochrons by the Re-Os system. The Re-187/Os-187 isotope system is recognized as a method by which the ages of iron meteorites can be directly determined and that can provide information on the timing of FeNi segregation and core formation in planetesimals. The Re-Os isotope system permits the direct absolute dating of the metal phase in iron meteorites. Indirect dating of iron meteorites has been achieved in the past through the Rb-Sr, K-Ar, and most recently, Sm-Nd for silicate inclusions, where present. Relative dating has been obtained directly by extensive studies of the short-lived system Pd-107/Ag-107 for the metal and sulfide phases and indirectly using I-129/Xe-129 in silicate and sulfide inclusions.
