Space-based solar power conversion and delivery systems study. Volume 1: Executive summary

The technical and economic aspects of satellite solar power systems are presented with a focus on the current configuration 5000 MW system. The technical studies include analyses of the orbital system structures, control and stationkeeping, and the formulation of program plans and costs for input to the economic analyses. The economic analyses centered about the development and use of a risk analysis model for a system cost assessment, identification of critical issues and technologies, and to provide information for programmatic decision making. A preliminary economic examination of some utility interface issues is included. Under the present state-of-knowledge, it is possible to formulate a program plan for the development of a satellite solar power system that can be economically justified. The key area of technological uncertainty is man's ability to fabricate and assemble large structures in space.

Analysis of space systems study for the space disposal of nuclear waste study report. Volume 2: Technical report

Reasonable space systems concepts were systematically identified and defined and a total system was evaluated for the space disposal of nuclear wastes. Areas studied include space destinations, space transportation options, launch site options payload protection approaches, and payload rescue techniques. Systems level cost and performance trades defined four alternative space systems which deliver payloads to the selected 0.85 AU heliocentric orbit destination at least as economically as the reference system without requiring removal of the protective radiation shield container. No concepts significantly less costly than the reference concept were identified.

Effects of Basalt Composition on a Martian Analogue Magma-Sediment Hydrothermal System Studied Through Thermochemical Modeling

High-temperature hydrothermal systems have been identified on Mars associated with both hypervelocity impacts and magmatic activity on Mars’s early history [1, 2]. These processes may have produced habitable environments by providing heat, energy, and volatile species necessary to support microbial life [3, 4]. Hydrothermal systems formed after the intrusion of mafic magmas in sedimentary rocks are of particular interest when investigating the habitability of high-temperature aqueous environments on Mars [5, 6],because during magma-sediment contact metamorphism bond fluids (e.g. in ice, pore spaces, minerals) are mobilized favoring the alteration of the country rocks and the release of bio-essential elements [7, 8]. The chemistry and mineralogy of these systems on Mars are not well constrained and, for this reason, terrestrial analogues need to be investigated. Costello et al. [5] and Crandall et al. [6] have studied a mafic dike intruding the Jurassic Entrada sandstone (Colorado Plateau, UT). The intrusion has produced a hydrothermal system with Cl-CO2 rich fluids and near-neutral pH, which induced chemical and mineralogical changes in the dike and in the sediments [5, 6]. The system reached temperatures higher than 700 °C around the contact zone [6], but lower temperatures (< 200 °C) were reached as the system cooled down [5] making the environment potentially habitable [6]. However, previous studies do not consider compositional differences between the terrestrial dike and basaltic rocks on Mars [9, 10] making difficult a direct comparison between alteration mineralogy and brine chemistry of terrestrial and martian systems. Here, we use thermochemical modelling to investigate how differences in bulk dike composition will affect secondary mineral assemblages and fluid chemistry.

Introduction to the Personal Access Satellite System Study

A recent study by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has concluded that the 21st century will be the age of information in which the telecommunication infrastructure will be vital to the social and economic well being of society. To meet the challenge of the coming age, JPL has been performing studies on a personal access satellite system (PASS) for the 21st century. The PASS study can be traced back to a study in which the technical feasibility and potential applications of a high frequency, low data rate satellite system were identified using small fixed terminals. Herein, the PASS concept is described along with the strawman design. Then the key challenges are identified along with possible solutions. Finally, the plan for the future is summarized from the key results.

Outer planet Pioneer imaging communications system study

The effects of different types of imaging data compression on the elements of the Pioneer end-to-end data system were studied for three imaging transmission methods. These were: no data compression, moderate data compression, and the advanced imaging communications system. It is concluded that: (1) the value of data compression is inversely related to the downlink telemetry bit rate; (2) the rolling characteristics of the spacecraft limit the selection of data compression ratios; and (3) data compression might be used to perform acceptable outer planet mission at reduced downlink telemetry bit rates.

Extended performance solar electric propulsion thrust system study. Volume 1: Executive summary

Several thrust system design concepts were evaluated and compared using the specifications of the most advanced 30 cm engineering model thruster as the technology base. The extensions in thruster performance required for the Halley's comet mission were defined and alternative thrust system concepts were designed. Confirmation testing and analysis of thruster and power-processing components were performed, and the feasibility of satisfying extended performance requirements was verified. A baseline design was selected from the alternatives considered, and the design analysis and documentation were refined. A program development plan was formulated that outlines the work structure considered necessary for developing, qualifying, and fabricating the flight hardware for the baseline thrust system within the time frame of a project to rendezvous with Halley's comet. An assessment was made of the costs and risks associated with a baseline thrust system as provided to the mission project under this plan. Critical procurements and interfaces were identified and defined. Results are presented.

Advanced flight control system study

A fly by wire flight control system architecture designed for high reliability includes spare sensor and computer elements to permit safe dispatch with failed elements, thereby reducing unscheduled maintenance. A methodology capable of demonstrating that the architecture does achieve the predicted performance characteristics consists of a hierarchy of activities ranging from analytical calculations of system reliability and formal methods of software verification to iron bird testing followed by flight evaluation. Interfacing this architecture to the Lockheed S-3A aircraft for flight test is discussed. This testbed vehicle can be expanded to support flight experiments in advanced aerodynamics, electromechanical actuators, secondary power systems, flight management, new displays, and air traffic control concepts.

Systems study for an Integrated Digital-Electric Aircraft (IDEA)

The results of the Integrated Digital/Electric Aircraft (IDEA) Study are presented. Airplanes with advanced systems were, defined and evaluated, as a means of identifying potential high payoff research tasks. A baseline airplane was defined for comparison, typical of a 1990's airplane with advanced active controls, propulsion, aerodynamics, and structures technology. Trade studies led to definition of an IDEA airplane, with extensive digital systems and electric secondary power distribution. This airplane showed an improvement of 3% in fuel use and 1.8% in DOC relative to the baseline configuration. An alternate configuration, an advanced technology turboprop, was also evaluated, with greater improvement supported by digital electric systems. Recommended research programs were defined for high risk, high payoff areas appropriate for implementation under NASA leadership.
