Tandem steerable running gear

Characteristics of steering assembly for vehicle designed to move large components of space flight vehicles are presented. Design makes it possible to move heavy and bulky items through narrow passageways with tight turns. Typical configuration is illustrated to show dimensions of turning radius and minimum distances involved.

Operating features of an ion-cyclotron-wave plasma apparatus running in the RF-sustained mode

An experimental study has been made of an ion-cyclotron-wave apparatus operated in the RF-sustained mode. This is a mode in which the Stix RF coil both propagates the waves and maintains the plasma. Problems associated with this method of operation are presented. Some factors that are important to the coupling of RF power are noted. In general, the wave-propagation and wave-damping data agree with theory. Some irregularities in wave fields are observed. Maximum ion temperature is 870 eV at a density of 5 times 10 to the 12th power per cubic centimeter and RF power of 90 kW. Coupling efficiency is 70 percent.

Micturition patterns of an unrestrained chimpanzee under entrained and free running conditions.

A young male chimpanzee was subjected to 30 days of isolation. Urine volumes and voiding times were recorded every hour beginning 14 days prior to isolation, ending 6 days after isolation, and approximately 2 months later for 10 days as a control. Observed during most periods of the experiment were (1) clear circadian micturition rhythms with the voiding peak occurring immediately after the subject awoke and (2) urine flow rhythms with the maximum volume voided in the morning hours. A 24-hour rhythm was seen when the subject was entrained to 12L:12D treatments and 24.8-hour rhythm when he was exposed to continuous light. A possible underlying 24-hour micturition rhythm was also seen during the continuous light period. Distorted rhythm curves indicating possible stress were obtained for the pre-isolation adaptation period and the initial period of isolation. As time passed, the curves were more like the controls, perhaps indicating a decrease in stress.

Voltage-spike analysis for a free-running parallel inverter

Unwanted and sometimes damaging high-amplitude voltage spikes occur during each half cycle in many transistor saturable-core inverters at the moment when the core saturates and the transistors switch. The analysis shows that spikes are an intrinsic characteristic of certain types of inverters even with negligible leakage inductance and purely resistive load. The small but unavoidable after-saturation inductance of the saturable-core transformer plays an essential role in creating these undesired thigh-voltage spikes. State-plane analysis provides insight into the complex interaction between core and transistors, and shows the circuit parameters upon which the magnitude of these spikes depends.

Motor run-up system

A starting system is described for bringing a large synchronous motor up to speed to prevent large power line disturbances at the moment the motor is connected to the power line. The system includes (1) a digital counter which generates a count determined by the difference in frequency between the power line and a small current generated by the synchronous motor; (2) a latch which stores the count; and (3) a comparator which compares the stored count with a newly generated count to determine whether the synchronous motor is accelerating or decelerating. Signals generated by the counter and comparator control the current to a clutch that couples a starting motor to the large synchronous motor.
