Spin wave theory for the triaxial magnetic anisotropy 2D van der Waals antiferromagnet CrSBr

The magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials have been attracting increasing attention in recent years due to their unique behavior and possible applications in new devices. One material of great interest is the 2D van der Waals (vdW) crystal CrSBr, which exhibits antiferromagnetic (AF) order at low temperatures due to an interlayer AF exchange interaction. Here, we present a full quantum spin-wave theory for vdW crystals considering one interlayer and three intralayer exchange interactions, and triaxial magnetic anisotropy. The fits of the theoretical results to antiferromagnetic resonance measurements and inelastic neutron scattering data in CrSBr yield reliable values for the seven interaction parameters that can be used to calculate other properties of this interesting material.

Beyond magnons in Nd 2 ScNbO 7 : An Ising pyrochlore antiferromagnet with all-in–all-out order and random fields

We report the low-temperature magnetic properties of Nd 3+ pyrochlore Nd 2 ScNbO 7 . Susceptibility and magnetization show an easy-axis moment, and heat capacity reveals a phase transition to long-range order at T N =371(2) mK with a fully recovered ΔS=Rln(2), 53% of it recovered for T>T N . Elastic neutron scattering shows a long-range all-in all-out magnetic order with low-Q diffuse elastic scattering. Inelastic neutron scattering shows a low-energy flat band, indicating a magnetic Hamiltonian similar to Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Nuclear hyperfine excitations measured by ultra-high-resolution neutron backscattering indicate a distribution of static electronic moments below T N , which may be due to B-site disorder influencing Nd crystal electric fields. Analysis of heat-capacity data shows an unexpected T-linear or T 3/2 term which is inconsistent with conventional magnon quasiparticles, but is consistent with fractionalized spinons or gapless local spin excitations. We use legacy data to show similar behavior in Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Comparing local static moments also reveals a suppression of the nuclear Schottky anomaly in temperature, evidencing a fraction of Nd sites with nearly zero static moment, consistent with exchange-disorder-induced random singlet formation. Finally, taken together, these measurements suggest an unusual fluctuating magnetic ground state which mimics a spin liquid, but may not actually be one.

Spin–Phonon Coupling in Ferromagnetic Monolayer Chromium Tribromide

Novel 2D magnets exhibit intrinsic electrically tunable magnetism down to the monolayer limit, which has significant value for nonvolatile memory and emerging computing device applications. In these compounds, spin–phonon coupling (SPC) typically plays a crucial role in magnetic fluctuations, magnon dissipation, and ultimately establishing long-range ferromagnetic order. However, a systematic understanding of SPC in 2D magnets that combines theory and experiment is still lacking. Here in this work, monolayer chromium tribromide is studied to investigate SPC in 2D magnets via Raman spectroscopy and first principle calculations. The experimental Curie temperature and phonon shifts are found to be in good agreement with the numerical simulations. Specifically, it is demonstrated how magnetic exchange interactions affect phonon vibrations, which helps establish design fundamentals for 2D magnetic materials and other related devices.

Magnetic field induced phases and spin Hamiltonian in Cs 2 CoBr 4

Magnetic structures and spin excitations are studied across the phase diagram of the geometrically frustrated S = 3/2 quantum antiferromagnet Cs 2 CoBr 4 in magnetic fields applied along the magnetic easy axis, using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, and terahertz absorption spectroscopy. Here, the data are analyzed, where appropriate, using extended SU(4) linear spin wave theory. A minimal magnetic Hamiltonian is proposed based on measurements in the high-field paramagnetic state. It deviates considerably from the previously considered models. Additional dilatometry experiments highlight the importance of magnetoelastic coupling in this system.

First-principles characterization of the magnetic properties of Cu 2 (OH) 3 Br

Low-dimensional spin-1/2 transition metal oxides and oxyhalides continue to be at the forefront of research investigating nonclassical phases such as quantum spin liquids. In this work, we examine the magnetic properties of the oxyhalide Cu 2 (OH) 3 Br in the botallackite structure using first-principles density functional theory, linear spin-wave theory, and exact diagonalization calculations. This quasi-two-dimensional system consists of Cu 2+ S = 1/2 moments arranged on a distorted triangular lattice. Our exact diagonalization calculations, which rely on a first-principles-based magnetic model, generate spectral functions consistent with inelastic neutron scattering data. By performing computational experiments to disentangle the chemical and steric effects of the halide ions, we find that the dominant effect of the halogen ions is steric in the Cu 2 (OH) 3 X series of compounds.

Geometrical frustration versus Kitaev interactions in BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2

Recently, Co-based honeycomb magnets have been proposed as promising candidate materials to host the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) state. One of the front-runners is BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 (BCAO), where it was suggested that the exchange processes between Co 2+ ions via the surrounding edge-sharing oxygen octahedra could give rise to bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we present and analyze a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of BCAO with fields in the honeycomb plane. Combining the constraints from the magnon excitations in the high-field polarized state and the inelastic spin structure factor measured in zero magnetic field, we examine two leading theoretical models: the Kitaev-type JK Γ Γ ′ model and the XXZ - J 1 - J 3 model. We show that the existing experimental data can be consistently accounted for by the XXZ - J 1 - J 3 model but not by the JK Γ Γ ′ model, and we discuss the implications of these results for the realization of a spin liquid phase in BCAO and more generally for the realization of the Kitaev model in cobaltates.

Relaxation of a single defect spin by the low-frequency gyrotropic mode of a magnetic vortex

We excite the gyrotropic mode of a magnetic vortex and observe the resulting effect on the spin state of a nearby nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond. Thin permalloy disks fabricated on a diamond sample are magnetized in a vortex state in which the magnetization curls around a central core. The magnetization dynamics of this configuration are described by a discrete spectrum of confined magnon modes as well as a low-frequency gyrotropic mode in which the vortex core precesses about its equilibrium position. Despite the spin transition frequencies being far-detuned from the modes of the ferromagnet, we observe enhanced relaxation of the NV spin when driving the gyrotropic mode. Moreover, we map the spatial dependence of the interaction between the vortex and the spin by translating the vortex core within the disk with an applied magnetic field, resulting in steplike motion as the vortex is pinned and de-pinned. Strong spin relaxation is observed when the vortex core is within approximately 250 nm of the NV center defect. We attribute this effect to the higher frequencies in the spectrum of the magnetic fringe field arising from the soliton-like nature of the gyrotropic mode when driven with sufficiently large amplitude.

Spatially-resolved dynamic sampling of different phasic magnetic resonances of nanoparticle ensembles in a magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum

Abstract Nanoscaled magnetic particle ensembles are promising building blocks for realizing magnon based binary logic. Element-specific real-space monitoring of magnetic resonance modes with sampling rates in the GHz regime is imperative for the experimental verification of future complex magnonic devices. Here we present the observation of different phasic magnetic resonance modes using the element-specific technique of time-resolved scanning transmission x-ray microscopy within a chain of dipolarly coupled Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (40–50 nm particle size) inside a single cell of a magnetotactic bacterium Magnetospirillum magnetotacticum . The particles are probed with 25 nm resolution at the Fe L 3 x-ray absorption edge in response to a microwave excitation of 4.07 GHz. A plethora of resonance modes is observed within multiple particle segments oscillating in- and out-of-phase, well resembled by micromagnetic simulations.

Discovery and Synthesis of a Family of Boride Altermagnets

Borides are a rich material family. To push the boundaries of borides’ properties and applications into broader fields, we have conducted systematic theoretical and experimental searches for synthesizable phases in ternary borides TM 2 B 2 (T = 3d, M = 4d/5d transition metals). We find that TM 2 B 2 in the FeMo 2 B 2 -type and CoW 2 B 2 -type structures form a large family of stable/metastable materials of 120 members. Among them, we identify 40 materials with stable magnetic solutions. Further, we discover 11 altermagnets in the FeMo 2 B 2 -type structure. So far, boride altermagnets are rare. In these altermagnets, T = Fe or Mn atoms are arranged in parallel T-chains with strong ferromagnetic intrachain couplings and antiferromagnetic interchain couplings. They simultaneously exhibit electronic band spin splitting, typical of ferromagnetism, and zero net magnetization, typical of antiferromagnetism. They also exhibit magnonic band chiral splitting. Both effects originate from the unique altermagnetic symmetries crucially constrained by the nonmagnetic atoms in the structure. Transport properties of relevance to spintronic applications, including the strain-induced spin-splitter effect and anomalous Hall effect, are predicted. An iodine-assisted synthesis method for TM 2 B 2 is developed, using which 7 of the predicted low-energy phases are experimentally synthesized and characterized, including 4 altermagnets. This work expands the realm of borides by offering new opportunities for studying altermagnetism and altermagnons in borides. It also provides valuable insights into the discovery and design of altermagnets. Here, by demonstrating that altermagnets can exist as families sharing a common motif, this work paves a feasible route for discovering altermagnets by elemental substitutions and high-throughput computations.
