Fundamental aspects of Spacetime and Quantum Fields

The proposal contained two goals: firstly, placing fundamental bound on thermalization in Quantum Field Theories (QFTs) and, secondly, developing our understanding of emergent spacetime from matrices through concrete models. Since the previous reporting period, in collaboration with Sean Hartnoll we have continued our study of entanglement edge modes in matrix quantum mechanics (MQM). This has resulted in two papers. The first applies our construction for the Matrix Quantum Hall system first to fuzzy sphere states known to correspond to stringy M2-branes in MQM. Entanglement in these states using machine learning methods have also been studied by Sean Hartnoll and Xizhi Han in previous work done under this grant. Our construction builds on this work, and further demonstrates how area laws on fuzzy geometries emerge from strongly coupled systems. The second paper generalizes this construction to all noncommutative geometries with curvature much larger than the noncommutativity parameter. We demonstrate that despite UV/IR mixing effects, the structure of entanglement edge mode irreducible representations is determined by the boundary area of subsystems. On manifolds without global symmetries, we have demonstrated that nonlocal effects inherent to noncommutative geometries resum into a change of frame of the metric structure, similar to the change from string frame to Einstein frame for entanglement entropies calculated in string theory. These advancements lay the groundwork for future progress in the understanding of emergent geometry from large-N theories. Using these techniques, we are currently working on applying our methods to noncom mutative geometries whose construction is not so well understood, such as the fuzzy 5-sphere. Despite their opacity these objects are quite important, as string physics in the bulk of holographic systems bears many features of noncommutative geometry. We have also laid the groundwork of applying our methods to tensor networks, one of the most powerful models for understanding how geometry emerges from entanglement.

The hitchhiker's guide to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories

Superconformal field theory with \mathcal{N}=2 𝒩 = 2 supersymmetry in four dimensional spacetime provides a prime playground to study strongly coupled phenomena in quantum field theory. Its rigid structure ensures valuable analytic control over non-perturbative effects, yet the theory is still flexible enough to incorporate a large landscape of quantum systems. Here we aim to offer a guidebook to fundamental features of the 4d \mathcal{N}=2 𝒩 = 2 superconformal field theories and basic tools to construct them in string/M-/F-theory. The content is based on a series of lectures at the Quantum Field Theories and Geometry School in July 2020.

Asymptotic Freedom at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition without Fine-Tuning Using a Qubit Regularization

We propose a two-dimensional hard-core loop-gas model as a way to regularize the asymptotically free massive continuum quantum field theory that emerges at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Without fine-tuning, our model can reproduce the universal step-scaling function of the classical lattice X Y model in the massive phase as we approach the phase transition. This is achieved by lowering the fugacity of Fock-vacuum sites in the loop-gas configuration space to zero in the thermodynamic limit. Some of the universal quantities at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition show smaller finite size effects in our model as compared to the traditional X Y model. Our model is a prime example of qubit regularization of an asymptotically free massive quantum field theory in Euclidean space-time and helps understand how asymptotic freedom can arise as a relevant perturbation at a decoupled fixed point without fine-tuning. Additivity, Haag duality, and non-invertible symmetries

The algebraic approach to quantum field theory focuses on the properties of local algebras, whereas the study of (possibly non-invertible) global symmetries emphasizes global aspects of the theory and spacetime. We study connections between these two perspectives by examining how either of two core algebraic properties — “additivity” or “Haag duality” — is violated in a 1+1D CFT or lattice model restricted to the symmetric sector of a general global symmetry. For the Verlinde symmetry of a bosonic diagonal RCFT, we find that additivity is violated whenever the symmetry algebra contains an invertible element, while Haag duality is violated whenever it contains a non-invertible element. We find similar phenomena for the Kramers-Wannier and Rep(D 8 ) non-invertible symmetries on spin chains.

Treelike structure of symmetry topological field theories and multisector QFTs

The global symmetries of a D -dimensional quantum field theory (QFT) can, in many cases, be captured in terms of a ( D + 1 )-dimensional symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). In this work we construct a ( D + 1 )-dimensional theory which governs the symmetries of QFTs with multiple sectors which have connected correlators that admit a decoupling limit. The associated symmetry field theory decomposes into a SymTree, namely a treelike structure of SymTFTs fused along possibly nontopological junctions. In string-realized multisector QFTs, these junctions are smoothed out in the extradimensional geometry, as we demonstrate in examples. We further use this perspective to study the fate of higher-form symmetries in the context of holographic large M averaging where the topological sectors of different large M replicas become dressed by additional extended operators associated with the SymTree. TMD Handbook

This handbook provides a comprehensive review of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions, commonly referred to as transverse momentum distributions (TMDs). TMDs describe the distribution of partons inside the proton and other hadrons with respect to both their longitudinal and transverse momenta. They provide unique insight into the internal momentum and spin structure of hadrons, and are a key ingredient in the description of many collider physics cross sections. Understanding TMDs requires a combination of theoretical techniques from quantum field theory, nonperturbative calculations using lattice QCD, and phenomenological analysis of experimental data. The handbook covers a wide range of topics, from theoretical foundations to experimental analyses, as well as recent developments and future directions. It is intended to provide an essential reference for researchers and graduate students interested in understanding the structure of hadrons and the dynamics of partons in high energy collisions.

Four-dimensional symmetry from a broad viewpoint. II Invariant distribution of quantized field oscillators and questions on infinities

The foundation of the quantum field theory is changed by introducing a new universal probability principle into field operators: one single inherent and invariant probability distribution P(/k/) is postulated for boson and fermion field oscillators. This can be accomplished only when one treats the four-dimensional symmetry from a broad viewpoint. Special relativity is too restrictive to allow such a universal probability principle. A radical length, R, appears in physics through the probability distribution P(/k/). The force between two point particles vanishes when their relative distance tends to zero. This appears to be a general property for all forces and resembles the property of asymptotic freedom. The usual infinities in vacuum fluctuations and in local interactions, however complicated they may be, are all removed from quantum field theories. In appendix A a simple finite and unitary theory of unified electroweak interactions is discussed without assuming Higgs scalar bosons.

Apparently superluminal superfluids

We consider the superfluid phase of a specific renormalizable relativistic quantum field theory. We prove that, within the regime of validity of perturbation theory and of the superfluid effective theory, there are consistent and regular vortex solutions where the superfluid’s velocity field as traditionally defined smoothly interpolates between zero and arbitrarily large superluminal values. We show that this solution is free of instabilities and of superluminal excitations. We show that, in contrast, a generic vortex solution for an ordinary fluid does develop an instability if the velocity field becomes superluminal. All this questions the characterization of a superfluid velocity field as the actual velocity of “something”.

Discrete theta angles, symmetries and anomalies

Gauge theories in various dimensions often admit discrete theta angles, that arise from gauging a global symmetry with an additional symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase. We discuss how the global symmetry and ’t Hooft anomaly depends on the discrete theta angles by coupling the gauge theory to a topological quantum field theory (TQFT). We observe that gauging an Abelian subgroup symmetry, that participates in symmetry extension, with an additional SPT phase leads to a new theory with an emergent Abelian symmetry that also participates in a symmetry extension. The symmetry extension of the gauge theory is controlled by the discrete theta angle which comes from the SPT phase. We find that discrete theta angles can lead to two-group symmetry in 4d 4 d QCD with SU(N),SU(N)/\mathbb{Z}_k S U ( N ) , S U ( N ) / ℤ k or SO(N) S O ( N ) gauge groups as well as various 3d 3 d and 2d 2 d gauge theories.

Metric isometries, holography, and continuous symmetry operators

In the AdS/CFT correspondence, a topological symmetry operator of the boundary conformal field theory (CFT) is dual to a dynamical brane in the gravitational bulk. Said differently, this predicts a dynamical brane for every global symmetry of the boundary CFT. We analyze this correspondence for continuous symmetries which arise from a consistent truncation of isometries on the “internal” factor 𝑋 of AdS × 𝑋. In the extra-dimensional geometry, these branes are associated with various metric singularities and do not arise from wrapped D-branes. Boosts relate configurations interpreted as topological symmetry operators and heavy defects in the CFT. From the perspective of the AdS factor, with gravity and bulk gauge fields, these are codimension-2 Gukov-Witten-like vortex configurations which are the gravity duals of 0-form symmetry operators. These effective branes come with an asymptotic tension and size which is also fully fixed by bulk dynamics. We use this higher-dimensional perspective to determine properties of the worldvolume theory for these branes. We also discuss how these considerations generalize to more general quantum field theories engineered via string theory which need not possess a semiclassical gravity dual.

Low-energy effective quantum field theoretic description of excitations about soliton configurations

Solitons are the classical field configurations connecting two trivial vacua. These are also the solutions of classical field equations of motion with particle-like properties. Moreover, they are localized in space, having finite energy, and are stable against decay into radiation. The coherent state description of kink-solitons is discussed in the present article. Further, the relation between topological solitons and occupation numbers corresponding to low momentum excitations are also discussed coherently. The description of the low energy excitations about solitons in quantum field theory is the main theme of this article. Further, a few physical observables, namely some low order correlation functions, are computed up to certain integral forms. Furthermore, we have shown that it is possible to detect the presence of soliton-like classical configurations in many-particle systems from the nature of the one-point function and non-conservation of momentum feature of one-point, two-point and three-point functions in this low-energy effective field theory of these excitations.

Geometric quantum information structure in quantum fields and their lattice simulation

An upper limit to distillable entanglement between two disconnected regions of massless noninteracting scalar field theory has an exponential decay defined by a geometric decay constant. When regulated at short distances with a spatial lattice, this entanglement abruptly vanishes beyond a dimensionless separation, defining a negativity sphere. In two spatial dimensions, we determine this geometric decay constant between a pair of disks and the growth of the negativity sphere toward the continuum through a series of lattice calculations. Making the connection to quantum field theories in three-spatial dimensions, assuming such quantum information scales appear also in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), a new relative scale may be present in effective field theories describing the low-energy dynamics of nucleons and nuclei. Here, we highlight potential impacts of the distillable entanglement structure on effective field theories, lattice QCD calculations and future quantum simulations.
