Geometry Optimization for a Quadrupole Resonator at Jefferson Lab

The quadrupole resonator (QPR) is a sample characterization tool to measure the RF properties of superconducting materials using the calorime-try method at different temperatures, magnetic fields, and frequencies. Such resonators are cur-rently operating at CERN and HZB but suffer from Lorentz force detuning and modes overlap-ping, resulting in higher uncertainties in surface resistance measurement. Using the two CERN's QPR model iterations, the geometry was opti-mized via electromagnetic and mechanical simu-lations to eliminate these issues. The new QPR version was modelled for an increasing range of magnetic fields. The magnetic field is concentrat-ed at the center of the sample to reduce the un-certainty in surface resistance measurements sig-nificantly. This paper discusses the QPR geome-try optimization for the new version of QPR, which is now progressing toward fabrication.

Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry and Fisher Ratio Analysis for Discovery-Based Analysis

The ability to discover minute differences between samples or sample classes for ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF) can be a challenging endeavor especially when these differences are not known a priori. Indeed a typical UHPLC-QTOF analysis time of ~15 minutes can generate over 4 gigabytes of information for a single sample. Implementation of chemometrics such as Fisher ratio (F-ratio) analysis will allow the analyst to quickly and precise probe the chemical differences between different samples or sample classes. F-ratio analysis can be used to find sample or sample class distinguishing compounds reducing the 5 gigabytes of information into a simple, yet informative hit list. Moreover through combinatorial rearrangement, it is possible to determine a F-ratio threshold to separate the real and non-real hits. The F-ratio software presented herein is a semi-automated algorithm that processes the raw, exported .csv files from the SCIEX 500R QTOF in as little as 30 seconds. While further research is needed to modify and perfect the software to deal with high resolution mass spectra precise to 0.0001 Daltons, the current software, precise to 0.1 Da, is able to find significant chemical differences despite some of them being at extremely low concentrations nearing the limit of detection.

New Septum Dump Quadrupole Magnet Design

The purpose of the septum dump quadrupole (SDQ) magnet is to expand the beam size on the septum dump of the DARHT Axis 2 downstream transport in the same manner as the S2 magnet expands the beam on the beam stop for mode 1 operations of DARHT Axis 2. This is necessary in order to minimize the heating of the carbon beam dump and suppress desorption of ions. Initially, ions are generated through stimulated desorption and ionization of the monolayers of water vapor stuck to the beam dump surface. These ions propagate upstream at high speeds and act as an electrostatic focusing lens by reducing the beam space charge. As the beam size on the dump decreases, the dump is sufficiently heated so that a surface plasma is formed and much greater quantities of ions are generated through space charge limited emission. The interaction of these ions with the beam causes significant disruption of the beam.

PyEmittance: A General Python Package for Particle Beam Emittance Measurements With Adaptive Quadrupole Scans [Poster]

We present PyEmittance: a new Python package for general particle beam emittance measurements that offers adaptive quadrupole scans and is designed for robust and flexible integration with Python-based software, with online accelerators, and with simulation software. It is open source software, and can be installed via the command pip install pyemittance.

Fermilab Booster Beam Emittances from Quadrupole Modes Measured BPMs

The measurement of beam emittances by extracting the quadrupole mode signal from a 4 plate beam position monitor (BPM) was published at least 40 years ago. Unfortunately, in practice, this method suffers from poor signal to noise ratio and requires a lot of tuning to extract out the emittances. In this paper, an improved method where multiple BPMs are used together with better mathematical analysis is described. The BPM derived emittances are then compared with those measured by the Ion Profile Monitor (IPM). Surprisingly, the BPM measured emittances behave very well and are more realistic than those measured by the IPM.

AC resistance measurement of Skew Quadrupole Magnet

This tech note exhibits AC resistance measurement system of the Skew Quadrupole magnet with and without a beam pipe used in the AGS ring. The measurement results are compared with a system that uses skew quad power supply for the magnet. An introduction to ac resistance conceptualization and modeling is presented. It is followed by measurement methodology used and the results.

The Low-Beta Quadrupoles for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider: enabling higher luminosity by using Nb_3Sn conductor

The large-aperture, high-gradient Low Beta Quadrupoles for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN are the cornerstones of this collider. They are first-of-the-kind accelerator magnets bringing Nb_3Sn conductor to High Energy Physics colliders. In the US they are being fabricated and tested by the HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP), and in Europe by CERN. The design was developed by AUP and CERN in close collaboration. The Q1/Q3 cryo-assemblies contain two 4.2 m long magnets (MQXFA) fabricated and by AUP. They are tested vertically before use in a cry-assembly. In this paper we are going to present the main features of the MQXFA design, results of vertical tests, and main lessons learned. We will also discuss lessons learned for future use of Nb_3Sn magnets in HEP colliders.

Model Development and Analysis of a High-Fidelity Neutron Transport Sensor: The Quadrupole Detector Concept for Measurement of the Neutron Flux Gradient

Accurate reconstruction of the neutron flux distribution within a reactor core is essential for safe and efficient reactor operation. Traditional power shape synthesis in Light Water Reactors relies on hundreds of in-core detectors. However, this approach becomes impractical for Advanced Reactors and Microreactors due to limited space and harsh environments. To address this challenge, we propose a data-driven methodology that combines high-fidelity modeling with real-time ex-core sensor measurements, enabling the reconstruction of core power distribution while minimizing the reliance on intrusive in-core instrumentation. This project began in FY24 and achieved two initial milestones: (1) the definition of a three-year development plan for a Digital Twin framework and (2) the development of high-fidelity neutronics models of the Purdue University Reactor One (PUR-1) using both MCNP6 and OpenMC. The PUR-1 reactor, a zero-power facility, was selected due to its suitability for neutronics-focused modeling and the availability of experimental data for validation. Both models were benchmarked using neutron flux measurements obtained from irradiated gold foils, which were strategically placed within the core during a dedicated campaign in July 2024. This report marks the continuation and completion of those foundational tasks. The OpenMC model has been refined (improved geometric accuracy, expanded cross-section libraries, and refined sampling) and validated using additional experimental data. An updated sensor design—based on quadrupole configuration—was designed to measure both ex-core flux and its spatial gradient. These measurements will serve as inputs to a neural network-based reconstruction algorithm. Finally, the methodology was demonstrated on a two-dimensional test case representative of the heterogeneous material composition of the PUR-1 reactor core. A neural network implementation of the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral equation was employed to solve the boundary value problem using peripheral sensor measurements. The preliminary results confirm the strong potential of the proposed approach for accurate and minimally invasive neutron flux reconstruction.
