Anion–Cation–Anion Ion Triplet Characterization by Computation and Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Ion triplets of the chloride salts of two commonly used weakly coordinating cations are reported (i.e., Cl – ·NMe 4 + Cl – (1 – ) and Cl – ·PPh 4 + Cl – (2 – )). Negative ion photoelectron spectra at 20 K afford vertical and adiabatic detachment energies of 5.18 and 5.00 eV (1 – ) and 5.03 and 4.70 eV (2 – ), respectively. These results are well reproduced by coupled cluster calculations with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T)) whereas M06-2X is systematically too small by ~0.3 eV (i.e., 7 kcal mol –1 ). The structures of both 1 – and 2 – have five or six C–H···Cl – interactions that stabilize these cluster anions by 32 (1 – ) and 27 (2 – ) kcal mol –1 as given by their chloride dissociation enthalpies. In conclusion, these values drop to 7.4 and 3.8 kcal mol –1 in dichloromethane based up conductor-like polarizable continuum model calculations and suggest that X – ·M + X – ion triplets with a weakly coordinating cation maybe the reactive form of salts under some conditions.

Electronic Structure and Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Uranium–Gold Clusters UAu n – , n = 3–7

A collaborative effort between experiment and theory towards elucidating the electronic and molecular structures of uranium-gold clusters is presented. Anion photoelectron spectra of UAu n – (n=3-7) were taken at third (355 nm) and fourth (266 nm) harmonics of a Nd:YAG laser, as well as excimer (ArF 193nm) photon energies, where the experimental adiabatic electron affinities (AEA) and vertical detachment energies (VDE) values were measured. Complementary first principles calculations were subsequently carried out to corroborate experimentally determined electron detachment energies and to determine the geometry and electronic structure for each cluster. Except for the ring-like neutral isomer of UAu 6 where one unpaired electron is spread over the Au atoms, all other neutral and anionic UAu n clusters (n = 3 - 7) were calculated to possess open-shell electrons with the unpaired electrons localized on the central U atom. The smaller clusters closely resemble the analogous UF n species, but significant deviations are seen starting with UAu 5 where a competition between U-Au and Au-Au bonding begins to become apparent. The UAu 6 system appears to mark a transition where Au-Au interactions begin to dominate, where both a ring-like and two heavily distorted octahedral structures around the central U atom are to be nearly isoenergetic. With UAu 7 , only ring-like structures are calculated. Altogether, the calculated electron detachment energies are in good agreement with the experimental values

Investigation of low-Z Coster-Kronig transitions by means of Auger and photoelectron spectroscopy

Experimental intensity ratios of Auger transitions for Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn as well as the relative L sub 2 and L sub 3 level widths of Cu and Zn, derived from their photoelectron spectra, are presented. Evidence is presented that a great deal of vacancy reorganization took place following photoionization and prior to Auger emission. These reorganizations are assumed to be due to Coster-Kronig transitions f sub 23. These results are compared with theoretical calculations and agree with predicted discontinuity at Z = 30 where f sub 23 transitions become energetically impossible.

The photoelectron spectroscopy of ZnCl2

The ionization energies (IEs) corresponding to the Cl ligand electrons and the Zn 3d electrons in ZnCl2, computed using large Gaussian basis sets and a high level of correlation treatment, are presented. The IEs for the Cl ligand electrons are in excellent agreement with those determined from photoelectron spectra. The IEs corresponding to the Zn 3d electrons agree with experiment relatively well in absolute magnitude, but differ in order. The vibrational frequencies of the ground state agree very well with experiment, and predictions are made for the corresponding frequencies in the positive ion.

Probing the surface chemistry for reverse water gas shift reaction on Pt(1 1 1) using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Using ambient pressure XPS (APXPS), we explored carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) adsorption and CO 2 hydrogenation on Pt(1 1 1) single crystal surface to observe the activation of CO 2 and the subsequent reaction mechanism. In pure CO 2 , we observed CO adsorbates and adsorbed oxygen on Pt(1 1 1) derived from CO 2 dissociation at room temperature. The introduction of H 2 (at a pressure ratio of 1:1 (H 2 :CO 2 )) increased the production of CO across all temperatures by facilitating the removal of surface oxygen. As a consequence, the surface could expose sites that could then be utilized for producing CO. Under these conditions, the reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction was observed starting at 300 °C. At higher H 2 partial pressure (10:1 (H 2 :CO 2 )), the RWGS reaction initiated at a lower temperature of 200 °C and continued to enhance the conversion of CO 2 with increasing temperatures. Our results revealed that CO 2 was activated on a clean Pt(1 1 1) surface through the dissociation mechanism to form adsorbed CO and O at room temperature and at elevated temperatures. Introducing H 2 facilitated the RWGS as adsorbed oxygen was consumed continuously to form H 2 O, and adsorbed CO desorbed from the surface at elevated temperatures. This work clearly provides direct experimental evidence for the surface chemistry of CO 2 dissociation and demonstrates how hydrogen impacts the RWGS reaction on a platinum surface.

High-Resolution Photoelectron Spectroscopy of NO3 – Vibrationally Excited Along Its ν3 Mode

The nitrate (NO3) radical has long been the subject of both experimental and theoretical studies due to its complex electronic structure resulting from vibronic interactions between its X̃2A2' and B̃2E' states. In particular, the definite assignment of the fundamental of its degenerate stretching vibration (ν3) is still under debate. Here, we report high-resolution photoelectron spectra of vibrationally pre-excited NO3- using the recently developed IR-cryo-SEVI technique. The anions are excited through infrared (IR) excitation near 1350 cm-1, accessing the ν3 and 2ν3(e') vibrational levels with band centers at 1350.5 and ∼2700 cm-1, respectively. The IR-cryo-SEVI spectrum for 2ν3 pre-excitation shows clear evidence for an intense 321 transition. From the position of this feature (30031 cm-1), the electron affinity of NO3 also determined in this work (31680 cm-1), and the IR excitation energy, we obtain a fundamental frequency of 1051 cm-1 for the ν3 fundamental of the NO3 radical. This assignment and other features in the IR-cryo-SEVI spectra are supported by spectral simulations based on a vibronic Köppel-Domcke-Cederbaum Hamiltonian. The simulations also show that nearly all features in the IR-cryo-SEVI spectra arise because of pseudo-Jahn-Teller coupling between the X̃ and B̃ states of NO3. The results and analysis presented here settle a long-standing controversy regarding the ν3 frequency of NO3.

Analysis of two-color photoelectron spectroscopy for attosecond metrology at seeded free-electron lasers

The generation of attosecond pulse trains at free-electron lasers opens new opportunities in ultrafast science, as it gives access, for the first time, to reproducible, programmable, extreme ultraviolet (XUV) waveforms with high intensity. In this work, we present a detailed analysis of the theoretical model underlying the temporal characterization of the attosecond pulse trains recently generated at the free-electron laser FERMI. In particular, the validity of the approximations used for the correlated analysis of the photoelectron spectra generated in the two-color photoionization experiments are thoroughly discussed. The ranges of validity of the assumptions, in connection with the main experimental parameters, are derived.

Fortran Program for X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Data Reformatting

A FORTRAN program has been written for use on an IBM PC/XT or AT or compatible microcomputer (personal computer, PC) that converts a column of ASCII-format numbers into a binary-format file suitable for interactive analysis on a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) computer running the VGS-5000 Enhanced Data Processing (EDP) software package. The incompatible floating-point number representations of the two computers were compared, and a subroutine was created to correctly store floating-point numbers on the IBM PC, which can be directly read by the DEC computer. Any file transfer protocol having provision for binary data can be used to transmit the resulting file from the PC to the DEC machine. The data file header required by the EDP programs for an x ray photoelectron spectrum is also written to the file. The user is prompted for the relevant experimental parameters, which are then properly coded into the format used internally by all of the VGS-5000 series EDP packages.

Photoinduced Charge Carrier Dynamics and Electron Injection Efficiencies in Au Nanoparticle-Sensitized TiO 2 Determined with Picosecond Time-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Progress in the development of plasmon-enabled light-harvesting technologies requires a better understanding of their fundamental operating principles and current limitations. In this work, we employ picosecond time-resolved X-ray photoemission spectroscopy to investigate photoinduced electron transfer in a plasmonic model system composed of 20 nm sized gold nanoparticles (NPs) attached to a nanoporous film of TiO 2 . The measurement provides direct, quantitative access to transient local charge distributions from the perspectives of the electron donor (AuNP) and the electron acceptor (TiO 2 ). On average, approximately two electrons are injected per NP, corresponding to an electron injection yield per absorbed photon of 0.1%. Back electron transfer from the perspective of the electron donor is dominated by a fast recombination channel proceeding on a time scale of 60 ± 10 ps and a minor contribution that is completed after ~1 ns. The findings provide a detailed picture of photoinduced charge carrier generation in this NP–semiconductor junction, with important implications for understanding achievable overall photon-to-charge conversion efficiencies.
