Flexural Fatigue Testing and Qualification of Hybrid PAN-pitch Composite Materials with High Through-Thickness Thermal Conductivity
Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) considered for motor components within future electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles require not only a high strength-to-weight ratio but also a high through-thickness thermal conductivity (TC) to dissipate heat. Previously, CFRPs incorporating pitch CF interleaves demonstrated an increased through-thickness TC relative to the baseline composite, but the effect on flexural fatigue life was not evaluated. For this work, T700S/TC275–1 braided carbon fiber/epoxy prepreg baseline (no interleave), YSH–60A pitch interleave, and YS–80A pitch interleave configurations were tested for fatigue life. A combination of ASTM International Standards D7264 and D3479 were used to develop a reliable testing method. An Instron® (Illinois Tool Works Inc.) 8501 servohydraulic system with a fatigue test fixture was set up with a 16:1 span:thickness ratio, load ratio R set to 0.1, and frequency of 4 Hz. High-cycle fatigue testing was completed, and it was found that YSH–60A interleave performed slightly better than YS–80A below 100,000 cycles but showed no differences above 100,000 cycles. In all cases, the baseline CFRP had superior fatigue life performance both in terms of stress handled and total cycles to failure. These fatigue testing data will inform future use of hybrid CFRP materials by highlighting the tradeoff between increased through-thickness TC and fatigue life. Testing guidelines, equipment, and parameters for static and fatigue tests were successfully outlined for CFRPs.

Pan-sharpening for microscopy
Techniques for generating full-spatial resolution, full spectral resolution image(s) from a 3D spectral-data cube for any spectral value within a given spectral range are provided without requiring the acquisition of all full-spatial resolution, full spectral resolution data by an instrument. The 3D spectral-data cube is generated from a limited number of full-spatial resolution, sparse spectral resolution data and a sparse-spatial resolution, full-spectral resolution data of the same area of the sample. The use of the 3D spectral-data cube reduces the data acquisition time.
Plasticized melt spinning process using ionic liquids for production of polyacrylonitrile fibers
A method for producing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber, the method comprising: (i) mixing PAN with an ionic liquid in which the PAN is soluble to produce a PAN composite melt in which the PAN is dissolved in the ionic liquid; (ii) melt spinning the PAN composite melt to produce the PAN fiber; and (iii) washing the PAN fiber with a solvent in which the ionic liquid is soluble to substantially remove the ionic liquid from the PAN fiber. Also described herein is a method for producing carbon fiber from the PAN fiber as produced above, the method comprising oxidatively stabilizing the PAN fiber produced in step (iii), followed by carbonizing the stabilized PAN fiber to produce the carbon fiber. The initially produced PAN fiber, stabilized PAN fiber, resulting carbon fiber, and articles made thereof are also described.
Evaluating Iodine Immobilization Technologies: Cermets, Polycermets, and Polyhalmets
The work in this report documents the efforts conducted to assess the feasibility of some of the ideas documented in Pacific Northwest National Laboratory invention disclosure reports (IDRs) including: 1) Iodine capture in polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-containing composite sorbents (32451-E). In this work, the composites evaluated included Ag0, Bi0, Cu0, Bi2S3, and Cu2S embedded in PAN. 2) Metal iodide removal from these sorbents through dissolution in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (32729-E). In this work, PAN dissolution was evaluated for multiple types of sorbents including Ag-Pan, Bi-PAN, Cu-PAN, Bi2S3-PAN, and Cu2S-PAN. 3) Using metal-sulfide sorbents for iodine capture (32647-E). In this work, the composites evaluated under this IDR included Ag2S, Bi2S3, and Cu2S embedded in PAN. 4) Using low-melting metals to immobilize (encapsulate) iodine-loaded and polymer-containing sorbents into polymer-ceramic-metal (called polycermet) or polymer-halide-metal (called polyhalmet) composite waste forms (32625-E). In this work, the iodine-loaded PAN composites included AgI-PAN, BiI-PAN, and CuI-PAN. 5) Ceramic-metal composite waste form synthesis of polymer-containing materials using low-melting metals like bismuth, tin, or bismuth-tin alloys (32537-E). In this work, the metals evaluated included Bi, 58Bi-42Sn eutectic. 6) Cermets for immobilizing commercial sorbents loaded with radioiodine (32806-E). In this work, AgIX (iodine-loaded silver faujasite zeolite) was evaluated in cermet form.
