Quality of Life: A Prospective Randomized Trial of Palliative Volumetric Arc Therapy Versus 3-Dimensional Conventional Radiation Therapy

Volumetric arc therapy (VMAT) is a radiation therapy (RT) technique that spares normal tissues from high and intermediate RT doses but increases the volume of tissues receiving low doses of RT compared with 3-dimensional conformal RT (3DCRT). We hypothesized that palliative VMAT would reduce the detriment to patient quality of life (QOL) compared with palliative 3DCRT.

Dose Escalated Radiation Therapy for Glioblastoma Multiforme: An International Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 22 Prospective Trials

Limited evidence is available on the utility of dose-escalated radiation therapy (DE-RT) with or without temozolomide (TMZ) versus standard-of-care radiation therapy (SoC-RT) for patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme. We performed a systematic review/meta-analysis to compare overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) between DE-RT and SoC-RT.

Assessment of Prognostic Value of High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin T for Early Prediction of Chemoradiation Therapy-Induced Cardiotoxicity in Patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Secondary Analysis of a Prospective Randomized Trial

Cardiotoxicities induced by cancer therapy can negatively affect quality of life and survival. We investigated whether high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) levels could serve as biomarker for early detection of cardiac adverse events (CAEs) after chemoradiation therapy (CRT) for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

A Prospective Trial Demonstrating the Benefit of Personalized Selection Of Breath-Hold Technique for Upper-Abdominal Radiation Therapy Using the Active Breathing Coordinator

For upper abdominal tumors, our institutional-standard motion reduction method is the expiration breath-hold (EBH) technique, using Active Breathing Coordinator (ABC). However, an individual patient's breath-hold (BH) reproducibility (R{sub BH}) may be improved in deep inspiration or inspiration breath-hold (DIBH or IBH). This trial compared the tumor position R{sub BH}, stability (S{sub BH}), and breath-hold time (T{sub BH}) of 3 BH methods, using ABC, to personalize the selection of technique, by using a preplanning screening assessment.

Can Radiation Therapy Quality Assurance Improve Nasopharyngeal Cancer Outcomes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Reporting the First Phase of a Prospective International Atomic Energy Agency Study

Most new nasopharyngeal cancer cases occur in low-income and middle-income countries, and these patients experience poorer overall survival than that of new nasopharyngeal cancer cases in high-income countries. The goal of this research project is to determine whether the introduction of a radiation therapy quality assurance program can ultimately improve outcomes for nasopharyngeal cancer patients in lower-income and middle-income countries. This study reports the results of the first phase of the International Atomic Energy Agency Coordinated Research Project (325-E3-TM-47712).

Comparative Effectiveness Analysis of 3D-Conformal Radiation Therapy Versus Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) in a Prospective Multicenter Cohort of Patients With Breast Cancer

Simple intensity modulation of radiation therapy reduces acute toxicity compared with 2-dimensional techniques in adjuvant breast cancer treatment, but it remains unknown whether more complex or inverse-planned intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) offers an advantage over forward-planned, 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3DCRT).

Is Remote Learning as Effective as In-Person Learning for Contouring Education? A Prospective Comparison of Face-to-Face versus Online Delivery of the Anatomy and Radiology Contouring Bootcamp

The Anatomy and Radiology Contouring (ARC) Bootcamp was a face-to-face (F2F) intervention providing integrated education for radiation oncology (RO) residents and medical physicists. To increase access, we launched an online offering in 2019. We evaluated the effect of the online course on participants' knowledge acquisition, contouring skills, and self-confidence by comparing it with the F2F course.

A review on advances in oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) for industrial use and prospects of CO 2 –H 2 O splitting integration

The discovery of shale gas reserves has encouraged the development of direct methods for methane conversion into valuable chemicals, offering an alternative to indirect approaches that involve an energy-intensive and intermittent syngas production step, leading to high CO 2 emissions. Amongst the direct methods, the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) is a potential pathway to reduce CO 2 emissions and can produce commodity chemicals such as ethylene, a chemical regarded as central to the petrochemical industry. Even though OCM has been studied for over four decades, the technology still has not found commercial application. Amongst the challenges regarding industrial deployment of OCM, the most significant one is the requirement of a high ethylene yield of 30 % which is currently reported to be around 20 %. Moreover, the highly exothermic nature of the process and controlling the carbon selectivity over oxides of carbon (COx) is the heart of the problem. Numerous researchers have presented promising results in terms of catalysts, reactor designs and feeding strategies for OCM. However, due to lack of inclusiveness in the results, none of the combination of catalysts, reactors and system optimizations has been able to bring about its industrial viability. The current paper presents an extensive review of the noteworthy attempts to achieve industrial targets for OCM. Moreover, a comprehensive criteria is presented which highlights the desired end state for the industrial deployment of OCM technology. Furthermore, the criteria is based on literature survey and a comparison with industrially deployed ethylene production plants i.e., naphtha or ethane steam cracker plants. Finally, a novel integration technology is presented which includes a combination of OCM and CO 2 -H 2 O splitting in a chemical looping reactor design to enable efficient energy utilization and minimal heat losses to the environment.

A comprehensive review of proppant embedment in shale reservoirs: Experimentation, modeling and future prospects

This paper provides a comprehensive review on the application of proppants to maintain fracture permeability over the lifetime of a well based on published observations from experiments and modeling. The review identifies and describes important processes occurring during proppant embedment, during hydraulic fracturing, laboratory testing of fracture conductivity, proppant embedment and modeling of proppant embedment. Lastly, this paper identifies the challenges and knowledge gaps that also provide future avenues of research and opportunities for collaborative technological development which requires an interdisciplinary approach of science, engineering in academia, government, and private sector.

State of the art, gaps, and prospects in fusion materials theory and modelling

Advancing the theory and simulation of materials for fusion applications remains a key component of global roadmaps aimed at delivering much-needed fusion power. Especially as the drive for commercial application increases, prototypes must be designed against radiation damage before the relevant experimental data can be collected and cost reductions that are possible by testing materials in silico become even more important. Here, we summarise the state of the art as it emerged during the 7 th Fusion Materials Theory & Modelling Workshop that took place in 2024, with the aim to highlight present gaps and future directions for the fusion materials modelling community. Of particular interest were the effects of transmutations, chemical complexity with the development of novel alloys and interatomic potentials, advancements in modelling high-dose microstructures, comparison with experimental data and multiscale models for structural assessment relying on high-performance computing and virtual reality.
