Method for real-time inspection of structural components

A multi-mode approach for real-time inspection of structural components may be applied to rapid, wide area measurement of thickness of thick plate-like structures using full-field multi-mode response measurement and analysis. The approach may allow estimation of thickness from full-field multi-mode response to single-tone ultrasonic excitation in thick plates. The approach may utilize wavenumber information across all available wave modes in order to make wavenumber spectroscopy sensitive to changes in thickness for a broader range of nominal initial thicknesses.

Distillation tray structural parameter study: Phase 1

The purpose here is to identify the structural parameters (plate thickness, liquid level, beam size, number of beams, tray diameter, etc.) that affect the structural integrity of distillation trays in distillation columns. Once the sensitivity of the trays' dynamic response to these parameters has been established, the designer will be able to use this information to prepare more accurate specifications for the construction of new trays. Information is given on both static and dynamic analysis, modal response, and tray failure details.

A Study of the Efficiency of High-strength, Steel, Cellular-core Sandwich Plates in Compression

Structural efficiency curves are presented for high-strength, stainless-steel, cellular-core sandwich plates of various proportions subjected to compressive end loads for temperatures of 80 F and 600 F. Optimum proportions of sandwich plates for any value of the compressive loading intensity can be determined from the curves. The efficiency of steel sandwich plates of optimum proportions is compared with the efficiency of solid plates of high-strength steel and aluminum and titanium alloys at the two temperatures.

Coupling equivalent plate and finite element formulations in multiple-method structural analyses

A coupled multiple-method analysis procedure for use late in conceptual design or early in preliminary design of aircraft structures is described. Using this method, aircraft wing structures are represented with equivalent plate models, and structural details such as engine/pylon structure, landing gear, or a 'stick' model of a fuselage are represented with beam finite element models. These two analysis methods are implemented in an integrated multiple-method formulation that involves the assembly and solution of a combined set of linear equations. The corresponding solution vector contains coefficients of the polynomials that describe the deflection of the wing and also the components of translations and rotations at the joints of the beam members. Two alternative approaches for coupling the methods are investigated; one using transition finite elements and the other using Lagrange multipliers. The coupled formulation is applied to the static analysis and vibration analysis of a conceptual design model of a fighter aircraft. The results from the coupled method are compared with corresponding results from an analysis in which the entire model is composed of finite elements.

Generation of selective single-mode guided waves by d 36 type piezoelectric wafer

In general, mixed modes and dispersion of guided wave occur at any excitation frequency, while single modes are needed for effective nondestructive evaluation of structures. In this work, we present an approach to generate a selective single-mode guided wave in plate-like structures by exploiting the unique directionality of the d 36 type piezoelectric wafer and the symmetry of fundamental guided wave modes. Specifically, we devise a unified fundamental shear horizontal (SH 0 ) wave/fundamental antisymmetric mode (A 0 ) wave directional transducer pair by attaching the d 36 type piezoelectric wafers back to back on the opposite sides of the plate to provide selective, directional single-mode guided waves for actuation and sensing. Originally, the d 36 -type piezoelectric wafer, poled and cut from the lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate crystal, produces a mixture of the in-plane SH 0 (symmetric) mode and out-of-plane A 0 (asymmetric) and S 0 (symmetric) modes. By applying the in-phase or out-of-phase applied electrical field to the coupled d 36 -type piezoelectric wafer pair, our devised approach generates selective single modes, SH 0 or A 0 , respectively, to propagate in the structure. We describe the theoretical development of our approach and conduct both numerical simulations and laboratory experiments for validations.

Extension of vibrational power flow techniques to two-dimensional structures

In the analysis of the vibration response and structure-borne vibration transmission between elements of a complex structure, statistical energy analysis (SEA) or Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are generally used. However, an alternative method is using vibrational power flow techniques which can be especially useful in the mid- frequencies between the optimum frequency regimes for FEA and SEA. Power flow analysis has in general been used on one-dimensional beam-like structures or between structures with point joints. In this paper, the power flow technique is extended to two-dimensional plate like structures joined along a common edge without frequency or spatial averaging the results, such that the resonant response of the structure is determined. The power flow results are compared to results obtained using FEA at low frequencies and SEA at high frequencies. The agreement with FEA results is good but the power flow technique has an improved computational efficiency. Compared to the SEA results the power flow results show a closer representation of the actual response of the structure.

Improved lithospheric attenuation structure of the Arabian Peninsula through the use of national network data

We characterize the attenuation structure of the Arabian Peninsula through the measurement of regional phase amplitudes. High-resolution is achieved by combining stations from global networks with national network data through the cooperative effort of several countries in the region, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iraq, and Kuwait. The result is an improved attenuation model of the crust and upper mantle for a broad frequency band that extends from 0.5 to 10 Hz. The observed attenuation is in accordance with various elements of earth structure, including plate boundary type, style of tectonism, thermo-tectonic age, and temperature. Emerging features from the model include details in the structure along the Red Sea, and improved imaging of the southern Arabian Peninsula extending north from the Gulf of Aden. Finally, the resulting attenuation model can be employed for better magnitude estimates, in isolating tectonic and structural features, and in characterizing strong ground motion in the Arabian Peninsula.

A structural analysis of an ocean going patrol boat subjected to planning loads

A static structural analysis of an ocean going patrol vessel subjected to hydrodynamic planning loads is discussed. The analysis required the development of a detailed model that included hull plating, five structural bulkheads, longitudinal and transverse stiffners, and a coarse representation of the superstructure. The finite element model was developed from fabrication drawings using the Navy computer aided design system. Various stress and displacement contours are shown for the entire hull. Because several critical areas appeared to be overstressed, these areas were remeshed for detail and are presented for completeness.

Production and validation of scintillating structural components from low-background Poly(ethylene naphthalate)

Poly Ethylene Naphthalate (PEN) is an industrial polymer plastic which is investigated as a low background, transparent, scintillating and wavelength shifting structural material. PEN scintillates in the blue region and has excellent mechanical properties both at room and cryogenic temperatures. Thus, it is an ideal candidate for active structural components in experiments for the search of rare events like neutrinoless double-beta decay or dark matter recoils. Such optically active structures improve the identification and rejection efficiency of backgrounds events, like this improving the sensitivity of experiments. This paper reports on the production of radiopure and transparent PEN plates These structures can be used to mount germanium detectors operating in cryogenic liquids (LAr, LN). Thus, as first application PEN holders will be used to mount the Ge detectors in the LEGEND-200 experiment. The whole process from cleaning the raw material to testing the PEN active components under final operational conditions is reported.

Comments on Reynolds number effects in wall-bounded shear layers

The effect of Reynolds number on the structure of turbulent boundary layers and channel flows is discussed. Published data are reexamined in light of the following questions: (1) does the boundary layer turbulence structure change after the well known Reynolds number limit viz, when Re(theta) is greater than 6000?; (2) is it possible to disturb a high Reynolds number flat plate turbulent boundary layer near the wall such that the recovery length is O(100 delta)?; and (3) how close is the numerically simulated low Reynolds number flat plate turbulence structure to that observed experimentally? The turbulence structure appears to change continuously with Reynolds number virtually throughout the bounday layer and sometimes in unexpected manners at high Reynolds numbers.

Initial Study of Friction Pull Plug Welding

Pull plug friction welding is a new process being developed to conveniently eliminate defects from welded plate tank structures. The general idea is to drill a hole of precise, optimized dimensions and weld a plug into it, filling the hole perfectly. A conically-shaped plug is rotated at high angular velocity as it is brought into contact with the plate material in the hole. As the plug is pulled into the hole, friction rapidly raises the temperature to the point at which the plate material flows plastically. After a brief heating phase, the plug rotation is terminated. The plug is then pulled upon with a forging force, solidly welding the plug into the hole in the plate. Three aspects of this process were addressed in this study. The transient temperature distribution was analyzed based on slightly idealized boundary conditions for different plug geometries. Variations in hole geometry and ram speed were considered, and a program was created to calculate volumes of displaced material and empty space, as well as many other relevant dimensions. The relation between the axially applied forging force and the actual forging pressure between the plate and plug surfaces was determined for various configurations.
