Low-frequency attenuator circuit

Circuit uses only single operational amplifier and few passive components to remove background noise from miniature "wristwatch" pulse detector. It can be applied to other systems where background noise is slowly varying, such as ultrasonics, strain-gage sensors, and accelerometers.

Pulse transducer with artifact signal attenuator

An artifact signal attenuator for a pulse rate sensor is described. The circuit for attenuating background noise signals is connected with a pulse rate transducer which has a light source and a detector for light reflected from blood vessels of a living body. The heart signal provided consists of a modulated dc signal voltage indicative of pulse rate. The artifact signal resulting from light reflected from the skin of the body comprises both a constant dc signal voltage and a modulated dc signal voltage. The amplitude of the artifact signal is greater and the frequency less than that of the heart signal. The signal attenuator circuit includes an operational amplifier for canceling the artifact signal from the output signal of the transducer and has the capability of meeting packaging requirements for wrist-watch-size packages.

Circuit Counts Carbon Fibers

Carbon fibers are counted when they fall on high-voltage grid. An arc discharge vaporizes fiber and triggers timer. The equal-duration pulses from timer are integrated by operational amplifier, giving an output voltage that is proportional to the number of fibers incident after reset switch was opened. If two or more fibers arrive at grid simultaneously, they are vaporized one at a time; thus all of them are counted.

Development of design, qualification, screening, and application requirements for plastic encapsulated solid-state devices for space applications

Test data were collected on 1035 plastic encapsulated devices and 75 hermetically scaled control group devices that were purchased from each of five different manufacturers in the categories of (1) low power Schottsky TTL (bipolar) digital circuits; (2) CMOS digital circuits; (3) operational amplifier linear circuits; and (4) NPN transistors. These parts were subjected to three different initial screening conditions, then to extended life testing, to determine any possible advantages or trends for any particular screen. Several tests were carried out in the areas of flammability testing, humidity testing, high pressure steam (auroclave) testing, and high temperature storage testing. Test results are presented. Procurement and application considerations for use of plastic encapsulated semiconductors are presented and a statistical analysis program written to study the log normal distributions resulting from life testing is concluded.

Performance analysis and simulation of the SPS reference phase control system

The solar power satellite (SPS) concept envisions several hundred thousand synchronized microwave power amplifiers operating in parallel to produce an aggregate power output of 5-10 GW. This power is to be transferred to earth with the aid of a microwave/millimeter-wave beaming system operating in a synchronous orbit. The reference phase control system is considered along with aspects of pilot signal parameter selection. A power transponder analysis is conducted and an SPS performance evaluation is performed. Attention is given to system jitters and imperfections, the definition of power transfer efficiency, and the effects of system imperfections on SPS efficiency. It is found that the power transfer efficiency is relatively insensitive to the amplitude jitters. However, the effects of location jitters can produce a severe degradation of efficiency.

Rotating gravity gradiometer study

Two rotating gravity gradiometer (RGG) sensors, along with all the external electronics needed to operate them, and the fixtures and special test equipment needed to fill and align the bearings, were assembled in a laboratory, and inspected. The thermal noise threshold of the RGG can be lowered by replacing a damping resistor in the first stage electronics by an active artificial resistor that generates less random voltage noise per unit bandwidth than the Johnson noise from the resistor it replaces. The artificial resistor circuit consists of an operational amplifier, three resistors, and a small DC to DC floating power supply. These are small enough to be retrofitted to the present circuit boards inside the RGG rotor in place of the 3 Megohm resistor. Using the artificial resistor, the thermal noise of the RGG-2 sensor can be lowered from 0.3 Eotvos to 0.15 Eotvos for a 10 sec integration time.

Advanced components for spaceborne infrared astronomy

The need for improved cryogenic components to be used in future spaceborne infrared astronomy missions was identified. Improved low noise cryogenic amplifiers operated with infrared detectors, and better cryogenic actuators and motors with extremely low power dissipation are needed. The feasibility of achieving technological breakthroughs in both of these areas was studied. An improved silicon junction field effect transistor (JFET) could be developed if: (1) high purity silicon; (2) optimum dopants; and (3) very high doping levels are used. The feasibility of a simple stepper motor equipped with superconducting coils is demonstrated by construction of such a device based on a standard commercial motor. It is found that useful levels of torque at immeasurably low power levels were achieved. It is concluded that with modest development and optimization efforts, significant performance gains is possible for both cryogenic preamplifiers and superconducting motors and actuators.

Low-cost FM oscillator for capacitance type of blade tip clearance measurement system

The frequency-modulated (FM) oscillator described is part of a blade tip clearance measurement system that meets the needs of a wide class of fans, compressors, and turbines. As a result of advancements in the technology of ultra-high-frequency operational amplifiers, the FM oscillator requires only a single low-cost integrated circuit. Its carrier frequency is 42.8 MHz when it is used with an integrated probe and connecting cable assembly consisting of a 0.81 cm diameter engine-mounted capacitance probe and a 61 cm long hermetically sealed coaxial cable. A complete circuit analysis is given, including amplifier negative resistance characteristics. An error analysis of environmentally induced effects is also derived, and an error-correcting technique is proposed. The oscillator can be calibrated in the static mode and has a negative peak frequency deviation of 400 kHz for a rotor blade thickness of 1.2 mm. High-temperature performance tests of the probe and 13 cm of the adjacent cable show good accuracy up to 600 C, the maximum permissible seal temperature. The major source of error is the residual FM oscillator noise, which produces a clearance error of + or - 10 microns at a clearance of 0.5 mm. The oscillator electronics accommodates the high rotor speeds associated with small engines, the signals from which may have frequency components as high as 1 MHz.

An advanced geostationary communications platform

A large geostationary communications platform can offer many attractive possibilities for providing lower cost communications. The platform payload concept described in this paper attempts to exploit these possibilities. The use of a combination of spot and wide-area coverage beams accommodates users in both high- and low-density population areas, and provides a good degree of frequency reuse. A standard channel bandwidth, used for most traffic, facilitates interconnectivity among C-, Ku-, and Ka-band users who may all access the platform. Adoption of a 36-MHz channel bandwidth leads to transmission rates that would be easily handled by low-cost terminals providing direct customer premises service. This also lends itself well to a solution using a large number of solid-state power amplifiers operating in all three frequency bands and sharing a common, redundant, conditioned power supply.
