Local chiral EFT potentials in nuclei and neutron matter: results and issues

In recent years, the combination of advanced quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods and local interactions derived from chiral effective field theory (EFT) has been shown to provide a versatile and systematic approach to nuclear systems. Calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral EFT have lead to fascinating results for nuclei and nucleonic matter. On the one hand, ground-state properties of nuclei are well reproduced up to A $≤$ 16, even though these potentials have been fit to nucleon-nucleon scattering and few-body observables only. On the other hand, a reasonable description of neutron-matter properties emerges. While regulator functions applied to two- and three-nucleon forces are a necessary ingredient in these many-body calculations, the use of local regulators leads to a substantial residual regulator and cutoff dependence that increases current theoretical uncertainties. In this contribution, we review local chiral interactions, their applications, and QMC results for nuclei and neutron matter. In addition, we address regulator issues for such potentials and present a possible path forward.

Particle configurations in the $NN\bar K$ system

Three-body AAB model for the $NN\bar K$(s NN = 0) kaonic cluster is considered based on the configuration space Faddeev equations. Within a single channel approach, the difference between masses of nucleons and kaons and the charge independence breaking of nucleon-nucleon interaction are taken into consideration. We definite the particle configurations in the system according to the particle masses and pair potentials. There are two sets of the particle configurations, ppK¯, npK¯ 0 and nnK¯ 0 , npK¯, charged and neutral. The three-body calculations are performed by applying NN and NK¯ phenomenological isospin-dependent potentials. The mass and energy spectra related to the particle configurations are presented. We evaluate the mass and energy uncertainties for the NNK¯ model. As a result, an analogy to NNN model for the 3 H and 3 He nuclei is proposed.

Nucleon-Nucleon Scattering Up to N5LO in Chiral Effective Field Theory

During the past few decades a large effort has been made toward describing the NN interaction in the framework of chiral Effective Field Theory (EFT). The main idea is to exploit the symmetries of QCD to obtain an effective theory for low energy nuclear systems. In 2003, the first accurate charge-dependent NN potential in this scheme was developed and it has been applied to many ab-initio calculations, opening the possibility to study nuclear systems in a systematic and accurate way. It was shown that the fourth order (N3LO) was necessary and sufficient to describe the NN scattering data with a χ 2 /d.o.f on the order of so-called high precision potentials. However the systematics of chiral EFT also allow to relate two- and many-body interactions in a well-defined way. Since many-body forces make their first appearance at higher order, they are substantially smaller than their two-body counterparts, but may never-the-less be crucial for some processes. Thus, there are observables where they can have a big impact and, for example, there are indications that they solve the long standing Ay puzzle of N-d scattering. The last few years, have also seen substantial progress toward higher orders of chiral EFT which was motivated by the fact that only three-body forces of rather high order may solve some outstanding issues in microscopic nuclear structure and reactions. In this chapter we will review the latest contributions of the authors to development of chiral EFT based potentials up to N4LO as well as first calculations conducted for NN scattering at N5LO.

Chiral uncertainties in ab initio elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering

The effective interaction between a nucleon and a nucleus is one of the most important ingredients for reaction theories. Theoretical formulations were introduced early by Feshbach and Watson, and efforts of deriving and computing those ‘optical potentials’ in a microscopic fashion have a long tradition. However, only recently the leading order term in the Watson multiple scattering approach could be calculated fully ab initio, meaning that the same nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction enters both the structure as well as the reaction pieces on equal footing. This allows the uncertainties from the underlying chiral effective NN interaction to be systematically explored in nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering observables. In this contribution the main ingredients for arriving at the ab initio leading order of the effective nucleon-nucleus interaction in the Watson approach will be reviewed. Concentrating on one specific chiral NN interaction from the LENPIC collaboration and light nuclei with a 0 + ground state, the leading order nucleon-nucleus interaction is calculated using up to the third chiral order (N2LO) in the nucleon-nucleon potential, and elastic scattering observables are extracted. Then pointwise as well as correlated uncertainty quantification is used for the estimation of the chiral truncation error. Elastic scattering observables for 4 He, 12 C, and 16 O for between 65 and 200 MeV projectile energy will be analyzed.

Uncertainties in ab initio nuclear structure calculations with chiral interactions

We present theoretical ground state energies and their uncertainties for p -shell nuclei obtained from chiral effective field theory internucleon interactions as a function of chiral order, fitted to two- and three-body data only. We apply a Similary Renormalization Group transformation to improve the numerical convergence of the many-body calculations, and discuss both the numerical uncertainties arising from basis truncations and those from omitted induced many-body forces, as well as chiral truncation uncertainties. With complete Next-to-Next-to-Leading (N 2 LO) order two- and three-body interactions, we find significant overbinding for the ground states in the upper p -shell, but using higher-order two-body potentials, in combination with N 2 LO three-body forces, our predictions agree with experiment throughout the p -shell to within our combined estimated uncertainties. The uncertainties due to chiral order truncation are noticeably larger than the numerical uncertainties, but they are expected to become comparable to the numerical uncertainties at complete N 3 LO.

Deformed Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculation for light nuclei

For the first time the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) method was applied to nuclei whose intrinsic structure is nonspherical. One aim was to investigate whether the energy dependent reaction matrix calculated from a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction leads to deformations similar to, or different from, those obtained from energy independent interactions in Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations. Reaction matrix elements were calculated as a function of starting energy for the Hamada-Johnston interaction, using a Pauli operator appropriate to O-16 and a shifted oscillator spectrum for virtual excited states. Binding energies, single-particle energies, radii, and shape deformations of the intrinsic state in unrenormalized as well as renormalized BHF are discussed and compared with previous HF studies. Results are presented for C-12, O-16, and Ne-20.

Eikonal phase shift analyses of carbon-carbon scattering

A high-energy double-folding optical potential approximation to the exact nucleus-nucleus multiple-scattering series is used in determining eikonal phase shifts for carbon-carbon scattering at 204.2, 242.7, and 288.6 MeV. The double-folding potentials are derived by folding the energy-dependent free nucleon-nucleon interaction with densities for the projectile and target; these latter are obtained by unfolding the finite nucleon charge density from harmonic-well carbon charge distributions. The charge parameters for these distributions are taken from the results of electron scattering experiments. Predictions are made for total, reaction, and elastic differential cross sections using standard partial wave analysis for the scattering of identical particles and are then compared with recent experimental results. Excellent agreement is obtained despite the absence of arbitrarily adjusted parameters in the theory.

Propagation of cosmic rays through the atmosphere in the quark-gluon strings model

The quark-gluon strings model succeeds in the description of multiple hadron production in the central rapidity region of nucleon-nucleon interctions. This model was developed for hadron-nucleus interactions and used for calculation of the cosmic ray propagation through the atmosphere. It is shown that at energies 10 to the 11th power to the 12th power eV, this model gives a satisfactory description of experimental data. But with the increase of the energy up to approximately 10 to the 14th power eV, results of calculations and of experiments begin to differ and this difference rises with the energy. It may indicate that the scaling violation in the fragmentation region of inclusive spectra for hadron-nucleus interactions is stronger than in the quark-gluon strings model.

Meson multiplicity versus energy in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

A systematic study of meson multiplicity as a function of energy at energies up to 100 GeV/u in nucleus-nucleus collisions has been made, using cosmic-ray data in nuclear emulsion. The data are consistent with simple nucleon-nucleon superposition models. Multiplicity per interacting nucleon in AA collisions does not appear to differ significantly from pp collisions.
