TESS Hunt for Young and Maturing Exoplanets (THYME). II. A 17 Myr Old Transiting Hot Jupiter in the Sco-Cen Association

We present the discovery of a transiting hot Jupiter orbiting HIP 67522 (T {sub eff} ∼ 5650 K; M {sub *} ∼ 1.2M {sub ⊙}) in the 10–20 Myr old Sco-Cen OB association. We identified the transits in the TESS data using our custom notch filter planet search pipeline and characterize the system with additional photometry from Spitzer; spectroscopy from SOAR/Goodman, SALT/HRS, LCOGT/NRES, and SMARTS/CHIRON; and speckle imaging from SOAR/HRCam. We model the photometry as a periodic Gaussian process with transits to account for stellar variability and find an orbital period of 6.9596{sub −0.000015}{sup +0.000016} days and radius of 10.02{sub −0.53}{sup +0.54} R {sub ⊕}. We also identify a single transit of an additional candidate planet with radius 8.01{sub −0.71}{sup +0.75} R {sub ⊕} that has an orbital period of ≳23 days. The validated planet HIP 67522b is currently the youngest transiting hot Jupiter discovered and is an ideal candidate for transmission spectroscopy and radial velocity follow-up studies, while also demonstrating that some young giant planets either form in situ at small orbital radii or else migrate promptly from formation sites farther out in the disk.

In Situ Measurement of Stress Corrosion Crack Tip Properties During Environmentally Induced Cracking in Stainless Steel 304L

The influence of the external cathodic area, stress intensity, and electrochemical polarization level on the resultant crack growth rate and crack tip pH and potential was studied for stainless steel 304L in a sodium chloride environment. Before testing, the validity of in situ crack tip property measurements using microprobes and drilled holes was supported through modeling efforts and confirmed with experimental observations. Here, it was found that increasing the R-ratio during corrosion fatigue increased the crack growth rate and decreased the measured crack tip pH of the 304L sample. Decreasing the electrochemical potential (i.e., cathodic polarization) of the bulk sample increased the crack tip pH and stopped measured crack extension under constant K conditions. Conversely, increasing the potential of the bulk sample decreased the crack tip pH and induced cracking under constant K conditions. Decreasing the cathodic area external to the crack increased the measured pH at the crack tip and decreased the crack growth rate under fatigue conditions. For the given configuration, environment, and alloy studied, fatigue crack growth is not sustained by cathodic reactions solely occurring in the crack wake and notch. These results have implications for the ability to predict atmospheric crack growth rates from laboratory, full immersion experiments.

Results of Multiple Tracer Injections into Fractures in the EGS Collab Testbed-1

The EGS Collab project constructed an intermediate scale (~10-20 m) testbed at the 4850 level of the Stanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota for testing and validating fracture stimulation and flow/transport models. This testbed consists of eight ~200 ft (~60 m) HQ-diameter (9.6 cm) boreholes that are drilled into the crystalline rocks of the Poorman Formation from the West Access Drift tunnel. Of the eight boreholes, one borehole is used as an injection/stimulation well, while another sub-parallel borehole located about 10 m away from the injection well is used as a production well, and rest of the other boreholes are used as geophysical/fluid sampling monitoring wells. Hydraulic stimulation activities were conducted at three locations along the injection hole in an attempt to create direct fracture connections to the production hole. A flow system has been established between injection and production boreholes through a set of hydraulically stimulated fractures propagated from a notch located at 164 ft in the injection hole. Although we planned for a single production well, a set of natural fractures in the testbed is believed to have intersected the stimulated hydraulic fractures and provided additional flow paths for water to be transported to the drift through multiple monitoring boreholes and weep zones. As the flow tests continued after stimulation activities, single or a combination of two or three producers become dominant producers at different times, mostly as a response to intersection of hydraulic fracture and testbed wells, activation of natural fractures and making new leak points to the monitoring wells, resealing of leaky wells, and so on. Since late October 2018, multiple tracers were injected into the fracture system at the 164 ft location that involves both stimulated and natural fractures, and tracers were recovered from multiple locations in nearby wells and weep. The cumulative water recoveries over the time have ranged from 50 to 90%; however, the injected tracer recoveries from various production sources are much less (ranging from a few percentages to 38%). Changes in water/tracer recoveries, shifting of major producing wells from one well to the others, and other observations (e.g., microseismic, electric resistivity tomography, etc.) indicate a testbed that has undergone several changes since October 2018. In this paper, we present tracer recovery data accumulated during several tracer campaigns, provide conceptual testbed flow pathways, and provide observations that suggest a evolutionary nature of fracture volume and fracture geometry in the testbed.

Microwatt fuel cell stack

A microwatt fuel cell stack that demonstrates a wide range temperature tolerance, low reactant cross-over and leakage, low internal leakage current, and/or effective water transport is disclosed. Both H 2 and O 2 may be supplied directly to the fuel cell stack (i.e., dead-ended). One-piece gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) may serve as both the active electrode and manifold port. Water removal may be accomplished by permeation through the membrane to “fins” exposed by notches in the bipolar plates and gaskets.

Modular anti-rotation drilling systems and methods

A modular anti-rotation device for preventing rotation with respect to the central axis of a drilling tool in a borehole and for producing a notch in a borehole surface. The anti-rotation device includes an upper fixture portion and a lower fixture portion in axial alignment. The upper fixture portion and the lower fixture portion are connected by yoke assemblies. Each yoke assembly is connected to the fixture portion and fixture portion at one end, and forming an articulated joint of the upper yoke assembly and the lower yoke assembly at a distal end opposite the first end. A roller is connected at each joint, connecting the upper and lower yoke assemblies. The rollers engage vertically with a borehole surface, the rollers travelling axially, as a drill shaft penetrates into the borehole, the rollers simultaneously preventing radial movement of the anti-rotation device and prevent rotation with respect to the central axis of the borehole.

On High-Fluence Irradiation Hardening of Nine RPV Surveillance Steels in the UCSB ATR-2 Experiment: Implications for Extended-Life Embrittlement Predictions

Nine archival reactor pressure vessel (RPV) surveillance steels from commercial nuclear power plants were irradiated in the University of California, Santa Barbara Advanced Test Reactor 2 (ATR-2) experiment to evaluate irradiation embrittlement under low-flux surveillance capsule versus higher flux test reactor (ATR-2) conditions. The postirradiation measurements of irradiation hardening, measured as increases in yield stress (Δσy), and corresponding conversions of Δσy to Charpy V-notch 41-J transition temperature shifts (ΔTc) are compared with various embrittlement trend curve (ETC) model predictions for the nine steels. Tensile and converted shear punch and microhardness measurements of Δσy generally show a continuing increase between intermediate and high ATR-2 fluences. The Eason-Odette-Nanstad-Yamamoto and ASTM E900 ETC models underpredict embrittlement at the ATR-2 irradiation condition: irradiation temperature (Ti) of 292°C, neutron fluence (ϕt) of 1.4 × 1020 n/cm2 (E > 1 MeV), and neutron flux (ϕ) of 3.68 × 1012 n/cm2-s. On average, the French FIS and Japanese JAEC ETCs slightly overpredict the ATR-2 data. The increase in Δσy with higher fluence is primarily due to Ni-Mn-Si precipitates, which slowly evolve in both nearly copper-free and copper-bearing steels. Finally, a new Odette-Wells-Almirall-Yamamoto embrittlement model is shown that yields good predictions for the nine steels at high fluences (ϕt > 5.5 × 1019 n/cm2).
