Neutron-neutron quasifree scattering in neutron-deuteron breakup at 10 MeV

New measurements of the neutron-neutron quasifree scattering cross section in neutron-deuteron breakup at an incident neutron energy of 10.0 MeV are reported. The experiment setup was optimized to evaluate the technique for determining the integrated beam-target luminosity in neutron-neutron coincidence cross-section measurements in neutron-deuteron breakup. The measurements were carried out with a systematic uncertainty of ± 5.6%. Our data are in agreement with theoretical calculations performed using the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential in the Faddeev formalism. The measured integrated cross section over the quasifree peak is 20.5 ± 0.5(stat) ± 1.1 (sys) mb/sr 2 in comparison with the theory prediction of 20.1 mb/sr 2 . Overall, these results validate our technique for determining the beam-target luminosity in neutron-deuteron breakup measurements.

Measurements of the Neutron Magnetic Form Factor and the Two-Photon Exchange Contribution to the Electron-Neutron Elastic Scattering Cross Section

The Super BigBite Spectrometer (SBS) program in Experimental Hall A of Jefferson Lab is a series of high-precision, large ?2 , electromagnetic form factor experiments. GMn and nTPE were the first two experiments of the SBS program and ran from Oc?tober 2021 through February 2022. Both experiments detect neutron-tagged ?(?, ???) and proton-tagged ?(?, ???) quasi-elastic electrons scattering from a deuterium tar?get. The GMn experiment is a measurement of the magnetic form factor of the neutron, ?? ?, via the ratio method over a ?2 range of 3.5 to 13.5 (GeV/c)2 . The nTPE experiment ran in-parallel with the GMn experiment and shared an overlap?ping kinematic point with GMn. nTPE extends the GMn experiment to assess the differences between Rosenbluth Slop and the single-photon exchange approximation. The nTPE experiment had two kinematic settings corresponding to different electron scatting angles at a fixed ?2 of 4.5 (GeV/c)? . Comparisons of nucleon form factor ratio measurements acquired through polarization transfer and LT separation reveal discrepancies as ?2 increases. Two-photon exchange is strongly favored as the reason for this discrepancy. ?? ? has been extracted at two kinematic settings corresponding to ?2 values of 3.0 and 4.5 (GeV/c)2 . Additionally, I will present an assessment of the differences between Rosenbluth Separation and single-photon exchange measure?ments.

Influence of additional neutrons on the fusion cross section beyond the N = 8 shell

Fusion enhancement for neutron-rich isotopes of oxygen on carbon nuclei was probed. To measure the fusion cross-section a 20O beam accelerated to E lab /A = 2.7 MeV bombarded the active-target detector MuSIC@Indiana with a fill gas of CH 4 . Examination of the average fusion cross-section over the interval 0.5 ≤ (E c.m. –V B )/V B ≤ 1.2 for 16–20 O + 12 C reveals that while even isotopes of oxygen exhibit essentially the same cross-section, the cross-section for odd isotopes can be either enhanced or suppressed relative to the even A members of the isotopic chain. Theoretical models fail to explain the observed experimental results.

Nucleon-Nucleon Total Cross Section

The total proton-proton and neutron-proton cross sections currently used in the transport code HZETRN show significant disagreement with experiment in the GeV and EeV energy ranges. The GeV range is near the region of maximum cosmic ray intensity. It is therefore important to correct these cross sections, so that predictions of space radiation environments will be accurate. Parameterizations of nucleon-nucleon total cross sections are developed which are accurate over the entire energy range of the cosmic ray spectrum.

Westcott g factors extended to arbitrary neutron energy spectra

Westcott 𝑔 factors are used in Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) and Prompt Gamma-ray Activation Analysis (PGAA) to evaluate the impact of non-1∕𝑣 behavior in the neutron-capture cross sections of certain nuclei on activation product yields. This non-1∕𝑣 behavior arises from the presence of neutron resonances in the neutron- capture cross sections that overlap with the source neutron spectrum at low (< 5 eV) energies. Historically, Westcott 𝑔 factors that have been cataloged for NAA and PGAA applications are the result of calculations that assume a Maxwellian neutron flux distribution with a given temperature. In this work, we use this approach with updated neutron-capture cross sections from the Evaluated Nuclear Data File, version VIII.1 (ENDF/B-VIII.1) to tabulate Westcott 𝑔 factor values for a broad range of Maxwellian distribution temperatures, comparing the results against currently-available 𝑔 factors from International Atomic Energy Agency tables and other sources. Here, it was discovered during this analysis that the use of guided thermal and cold-neutron beams at certain facilities necessitates an approach for evaluating Westcott 𝑔 factors based on arbitrary non-Maxwellian spectra. In this paper, we present an approach for calculating 𝑔 factors with user-specified neutron spectra, and we demonstrate these methods to obtain Westcott 𝑔-factors for guided- and cold-neutron beams at the Budapest Research Reactor and the Forschungsreaktor München II reactor. As part of this work, open-source software has been developed that can be used to perform these calculations for applications in PGAA and NAA experiments.

Measurements of the 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) and 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) Cross-Section Ratios Using Quasi-Monoenergetic Neutron Beams

Neutron-induced fission cross-section ratio measurements were carried out at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) over multiple experiment campaigns from 2021-2023. The total beam time for these measurements across all the experimental campaigns was approximately three weeks. This work was intended to serve as an independent validation of the fissionTPC cross-section ratio measurements. In contrast to the white spectrum neutron source and time-projection chamber utilized in the fissionTPC, these measurements utilized pulsed, quasi-monoenergetic neutron beams and fission ionization chambers. Therefore, this work has different sources of systematic error and can be used as a complementary measurement. In this report we describe our fission cross-section ratio measurements, analysis, results and provide a detailed uncertainty budget.

Evaluations for neutron-induced activation cross sections for Y and Zr isotopes

Activation cross sections are an important input for evaluating results of radiochemical analyses, both for basic science and programmatic applications. We present an update on cross sections for a select set of Y and Zr target isotopes, including several isomers. This effort will focus on a methodology to obtain uncertainty quantified systematic trends for reaction model parameters and propagate them to cross sections. We discuss our results in the context of previous calculations.
