First nucleon gluon PDF from large momentum effective theory

We report the first nucleon gluon parton distribution function (PDF) using Large-Momentum Effective Theory (LaMET). We focus on the gluon operator which was demonstrated to have the best signal-to-noise in the previous attempt [1] in computing gluon PDFs using LaMET. We compute the corresponding Wilson coefficients needed for the hybrid-renormalized matrix elements and the matching kernel to convert the quasi-PDF to the lightcone one at the one-loop level. We demonstrate that with the proper Wilson coefficients in place, the counterterms for the renormalization are independent of the hadron and mass within statistical error. Using the resulting renormalization, we then compute the nucleon PDF using a HISQ ensemble generated by the MILC collaboration with N f = 2 + 1 +1, a ≈ 0.12 fm, with valence pion masses of 310 and 690 MeV and two gauge link smearing techniques. Despite the physics effects of the heavier than physical pion masses and gauge link smearing, this calculation provides excellent proof of principle and compares reasonably with selected global fit results.

Resonance contributions to radiative corrections in charged-current elastic (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering at GeV energies

We present the first evaluation of virtual resonance contributions to the charged-current elastic (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering at GeV energies, focusing on the dominant Δ(1232) resonance. We approximate the vector part of the N → Δ transition by the leading magnetic dipole term. Our results for the cross-section corrections at fixed neutrino energy indicate the permille-level contribution of resonance intermediate states to the elastic and radiative scattering cross sections. This calculation exhibits the expected infrared behavior of the invariant amplitudes and unpolarized cross sections. Our findings provide important insights into inelastic excitations in the charged-current elastic (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering at GeV energies.

Dark-Matter–Electron Detectors for Dark-Matter–Nucleon Interactions

In a seminal paper now a decade old, it was shown that dark-matter detectors geared at probing interactions with nucleons could also be used to probe dark-matter interactions with electrons. In this Letter, we show that new detector concepts designed to probe dark-matter-electron interactions at low masses can similarly be used to probe new parameter space for dark-matter-nucleon interactions. We demonstrate the power of this approach by using existing data from superconducting detectors to place new limits on the interactions of nuclei with MeV-scale dark matter. Further, we show that advances in detector technology that have been anticipated for electronic interactions will automatically extend sensitivity deep into uncharted territory for nuclear interactions. This doubles the effective science output of future low-threshold experiments.

Three-nucleon lepton-number-violating potentials in chiral effective field theory and their matrix elements in light nuclei

Here, we derive the three-nucleon neutrinoless double-𝛽 decay potential in a Δ-full chiral effective field theory through next-to-next-to-next-to leading order in Weinberg's power counting. The matrix elements of the resulting operators are computed in light nuclei using variational Monte Carlo with wave functions constructed from the Norfolk family of nuclear interactions. We find that three-nucleon corrections induce a modest quenching of the total nuclear matrix elements. We discuss model dependencies and the potential impact of these corrections on the sensitivity of experimental programs to probe lepton number violating parameters. These results provide a benchmark for many-body methods capable of reaching heavier nuclei of experimental interest.

Nucleon Decays into Light New Particles in Neutrino Detectors

Proton and neutron decays into light new particles 𝑋 can drastically change the experimental signatures and benefit from the complementarity of large water-Cherenkov neutrino detectors such as Super- and Hyper-Kamiokande and tracking detectors such as JUNO and DUNE. The proton decays 𝑝 → ℓ + ⁢𝑋 and 𝑝 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑋 with 𝑚 𝑋 near phase-space closure lead to charged particles below the Cherenkov threshold, rendering them practically invisible in Super- and Hyper-Kamiokande but not in JUNO and DUNE, which are therefore uniquely positioned for these baryon-number-violating signatures despite their smaller size. As an additional signature, such nucleon decays in the Earth can produce a sizable flux of 𝑋 particles in underground detectors. We present a simple model in which nucleons decay into sub-GeV sterile neutrinos that subsequently decay through active-sterile neutrino mixing, with a promisingly large number of events in Super-Kamiokande even in the seesaw-motivated parameter space.

𝜌-meson nucleon scattering length from CLAS threshold photoproduction measurements

Here, extending our study of the vector meson-nucleon scattering lengths, we are focusing on the 𝜌-meson case using recent CLAS threshold data for the reaction 𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜌⁢𝑝 within the meson–baryon reaction model. The total 𝜎 𝑡 ⁡(𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜌⁢𝑝) and 𝜎 𝑡⁡ (𝛾⁢𝑝 →𝜔⁢𝑝) cross sections are close to the momentum of the vector meson in CM 𝑞 =0.2 GeV/c. Then the 𝜌⁢𝑝 photoproduction cross section grows rapidly. Our result for 𝜌⁢𝑁 scattering length is a factor of 4 smaller than the size of the hadron and the phenomenological determination of the 𝜔 nucleon scattering length using threshold photoproduction cross sections. The observed difference between 𝜌⁢𝑁 and 𝜔⁢𝑁 scattering lengths is of interest for further understanding within hadron structure theory.

Basis light-front quantization for a chiral nucleon-pion Lagrangian

We present the first application of the basis light-front quantization method to a simple chiral model of the nucleon-pion system as a relativistic bound state for the physical proton. In this work, the light-front mass-squared matrix of the nucleon-pion system is obtained within a truncated basis. The mass and the corresponding light-front wave function (LFWF) of the proton are computed by numerical diagonalization of the resulting mass-squared matrix. With the boost-invariant LFWF, we calculate the probability density distribution of the pion's longitudinal momentum fraction and the Dirac form factor of the proton.

Nucleon pair shell model in $\textit{M}$ scheme

The nucleon pair shell model (NPSM) is cast into the so-called $\textit{M}$ scheme for the cases with isospin symmetry and without isospin symmetry. The odd system and even system are treated on the same footing. The uncoupled commutators for nucleon pairs, which are suitable for the $\textit{M}$ scheme, are given. Explicit formula of matrix elements in $\textit{M}$ scheme for overlap, one-body operators, and two-body operators are obtained. In this work, it is found that the CPU time used in calculating the matrix elements in $\textit{M}$ scheme is much shorter than that in the $\textit{J}$ scheme of NPSM.

Dynamical model of φ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and 4 He

We investigate φ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and the 4 He targets within a dynamical model approach based on a Hamiltonian which describes the production mechanisms by the Pomeron-exchange, meson-exchanges, φ radiations, and nucleon resonance excitations mechanisms. The final φN interactions are included being described by the gluon-exchange, direct φN couplings, and the box-diagrams arising from the couplings with πN, ρN, KΛ, and KΣ channels. The parameters of the Hamiltonian are determined by the experimental data of γp → φp from the CLAS Collaboration. The resulting Hamiltonian is then used to predict the coherent φ-meson production on the 4 He targets by using the distorted-wave impulse approximation. For the proton target, the final φN rescattering effects, as required by the unitarity condition, are found to be very weak, which supports the earlier calculations in the literature. For the 4 He targets, the predicted differential cross sections are in good agreement with the data obtained by the LEPS Collaboration. Furthermore, the role of each mechanism in this reaction is discussed and predictions for a wide range of scattering angles are presented, which can be tested in future experiments.

Magnetic structure of few-nucleon systems at high momentum transfers in a chiral effective field theory approach

The five low-energy constants (LECs) in the electromagnetic current derived in chiral effective field theory ( χ EFT ) up to one loop are determined by a simultaneous fit to the A = 2 – 3 nuclei magnetic moments and to the deuteron magnetic form factor and threshold electrodisintegration at backward angles over a wide range of momentum transfers. The resulting parametrization then yields predictions for the 3 He/ 3 H magnetic form factors in excellent accord with the experimental values for momentum transfers ranging up to ≈0.8 GeV/c, beyond the expected regime of validity of the χEFT approach. The calculations are based on last-generation two-nucleon interactions including high orders in the chiral expansion and derived by Entem, Machleidt, and Nosyk [Phys. Rev. C 96, 024004 (2017)] and by Piarulli et al. [Phys. Rev. C 94, 054007 (2016)], using different χEFT formulations. In the A = 3 calculations, (chiral) three-nucleon interactions are also accounted for. The model dependence resulting from these different formulations of the interactions is found to be mild for momentum transfer below ≈0.8 GeV/c . Further, an analysis of the convergence of the chiral expansion is also provided.

Ab initio translationally invariant nucleon-nucleus optical potentials

We combine the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM) with the single-particle Green's function approach to construct optical potentials rooted in first principles. Specifically, we show that total cross sections and phase shifts for neutron elastic scattering from a 4 He target with projectile energies between 0.5 and 10 MeV closely reproduce the experiment. In addition, we discuss an important new development that resolves a long-standing issue with spurious center-of-mass motion in the Green's function formalism for many-body approaches. Furthermore, the new development opens a path for first-principle predictions of cross sections for elastic scattering of single-nucleon projectiles, nucleon capture, and deuteron breakup reactions, feasible for a broad range of open-shell spherical and deformed nuclei in the SA-NCSM approach.

Emulating ab initio computations of infinite nucleonic matter

We construct efficient emulators for the computation of the infinite nuclear matter equation of state. These emulators are based on the subspace-projected coupled-cluster method for which we here develop a new algorithm called small-batch voting to eliminate spurious states that might appear when emulating quantum many-body methods based on a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The efficiency and accuracy of these emulators facilitate a rigorous statistical analysis within which we explore nuclear matter predictions for > 10 6 different parametrizations of a chiral interaction model with explicit Δ -isobars at next-to-next-to leading order. Constrained by nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts and bound-state observables of light nuclei up to He 4 , we use history matching to identify nonimplausible domains for the low-energy coupling constants of the chiral interaction. Within these domains we perform a Bayesian analysis using sampling and importance resampling with different likelihood calibrations and study correlations between interaction parameters, calibration observables in light nuclei, and nuclear matter saturation properties. Dynamical model of J/ψ photoproduction on the nucleon

Here, a dynamical model based on a phenomenological charm quark-nucleon (c – N) potential v cN and the Pomeronexchange mechanism is constructed to investigate the J/ψ photoproduction on the nucleon from threshold to invariant mass W = 300 GeV. The J/ψ – N potential, V J/ψN (r), is constructed by folding v cN into the wave function φ J/ψ ($c\bar{c}$) of J/ψ within a constituent quark model (CQM) of Segovia et al. [Int. J. Mod. Phys. E 22, 1330026 (2013)]. A photoproduction amplitude is also generated by v cN by a $c\bar{c}$–loop integration over the γ → $c\bar{c}$ vertex function and φ J/ψ ($c\bar{c}$). No commonly used vector meson dominance assumption is used to define this photoproduction amplitude which is needed to describe the data near the threshold. The c – N potential v cN (r) is parameterized in a form such that the predicted V J/ψN (r) at large distances has the same Yukawa potential form extracted from a lattice QCD (LQCD) calculation of Kawanai and Sasaki, [Phys. Rev. D 82, 091501(R) (2010)]. The parameters of vcN are determined by fitting the total cross-section data of Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) by performing calculations that include J/ψ – N final-state interactions (FSI). The resulting differential cross sections dσ /dt are found in good agreements with the data. It is shown that the FSI effects dominate the cross section in the very near-threshold region, allowing for sensitive testing of the predicted J/ψ – N scattering amplitudes. By imposing the constraints of J/ψ – N potential extracted from the LQCD calculation of Kawanai and Sasaki, [Phys. Rev. D 82, 091501(R) (2010)], we have obtained three J/ψ – N potentials which fit the JLab data equally well. The resulting J/ψ – N scattering lengths are in the range of a = [-0.05, -0.25] fm. With the determined v cN (r) and the wave functions generated from the same CQM, the constructed model is used to predict the cross sections of photoproduction of η c (1S) and ψ(2S) mesons for future experimental tests.

In-medium changes of nucleon cross sections tested in neutrino-induced reactions

Historically, studied in the context of heavy-ion collisions, the extent to which free nucleon-nucleon cross sections are modified in-medium remains undetermined by these data sets. Therefore, we investigate the impact of N N in-medium modifications on neutrino-nucleus cross section predictions using the GiBUU transport model. We find that including an in-medium lowering of the N N cross section and density dependence on Δ excitation improves agreement with MicroBooNE neutrino-argon scattering data. This is observed for both proton and neutral pion spectra in charged-current muon neutrino and neutral-current single pion production data sets. The impact of collision broadening of the Δ resonance is also investigated. The absence of Δ broadening is slightly favored, but the larger uncertainties on the pion production data prevent definitive conclusions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Nucleon mass with highly improved staggered quarks

We present the first computation in a program of lattice-QCD baryon physics using staggered fermions for sea and valence quarks. For this initial study, we present a calculation of the nucleon mass, obtaining 964 ±16 MeV with all sources of statistical and systematic errors controlled and accounted for. This result is the most precise determination to date of the nucleon mass from first principles. We use the highly improved staggered quark action, which is computationally efficient. Three gluon ensembles are employed, which have approximate lattice spacings 𝑎 ≈ 0.09, 0.12, and 0.15 fm, each with equal-mass 𝑢/𝑑, 𝑠, and 𝑐 quarks in the sea. Further, all ensembles have the light valence and sea 𝑢/𝑑 quarks tuned to reproduce the physical pion mass, avoiding complications from chiral extrapolations. Our work opens a new avenue for precise calculations of baryon properties, which are both feasible and relevant to experiments in particle and nuclear physics.

Nucleon isovector axial form factors

We present results for the isovector axial vector form factors obtained using thirteen 2 + 1 + 1 -flavor highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensembles generated by the MILC collaboration. The calculation of nucleon two- and three-point correlation functions has been done using Wilson-clover fermions. In the analysis of these data, we quantify the sensitivity of the results to strategies used for removing excited state contamination and invoke the partially conserved axial current relation between the form factors to choose between them. Our data driven analysis includes removing contributions from multihadron N π states that make significant contributions. Our final results are g A = 1.292 ( 53 ) stat ( 24 ) sys for the axial charge; g S = 1.085 ( 50 ) stat ( 103 ) sys and g T = 0.991 ( 21 ) stat ( 10 ) sys for the scalar and tensor charges; ⟨ r A 2 ⟩ = 0.439 ( 56 ) stat ( 34 ) sys fm 2 for the mean squared axial charge radius, g P * = 9.03 ( 47 ) stat ( 42 ) sys for the induced pseudoscalar charge; and g π N N = 14.14 ( 81 ) stat ( 85 ) sys for the pion-nucleon coupling. We also provide a parametrization of the axial form factor G A ( Q 2 ) over the range 0 ≤ Q 2 ≤ 1 GeV 2 for use in phenomenology and a comparison with other lattice determinations. We find that the various lattice data agree within 10% but are significantly different from the extraction of G A ( Q 2 ) from the ν -deuterium scattering data. First constraints on WIMP-nucleon effective field theory couplings in an extended energy region from LUX-ZEPLIN

Following the first science results of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating from the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA, we report the initial limits on a model-independent nonrelativistic effective field theory describing the complete set of possible interactions of a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) with a nucleon. These results utilize the same 5.5 t fiducial mass and 60 live days of exposure collected for the LZ spin-independent and spin-dependent analyses while extending the upper limit of the energy region of interest by a factor of 7.5 to 270 keV. No significant excess in this high energy region is observed. Using a profile-likelihood ratio analysis, we report 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling of each individual nonrelativistic WIMP-nucleon operator for both elastic and inelastic interactions in the isoscalar and isovector bases. Unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions of the nucleon from lattice QCD

We present a first lattice QCD calculation of the unpolarized nucleon’s isovector transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs), which are essential to predict observables of multiscale, semi-inclusive processes in the standard model. We use a N f = 2 + 1 + 1 MILC ensemble with valence clover fermions on a highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) sea to compute the quark momentum distributions in a large-momentum nucleon on the lattice. The state-of-the-art techniques in renormalization and extrapolation in the correlation distance on the lattice are adopted. The perturbative kernel up to next-to-next-to-leading order is taken into account, and the dependence on the pion mass and the hadron momentum is explored. Our results are qualitatively comparable with phenomenological TMDPDFs, which provide an opportunity to predict high energy scatterings from first principles.
