Direct Extraction of Uranium-Lanthanide Oxides in Tributyl Phosphate

Abstract Direct extraction of used nuclear fuel (UNF) in an organic solution could be more efficient than the previous practice with aqueous solutions. However, the UNF would need to be treated via voloxidiation before being processed using solvent extraction. The voloxidation process can form oxide and/or nitrate compounds. This work investigated the dissolution of uranium/lanthanide oxides in 30 vol % TBP diluted in dodecane (pre-equilibrated with 4 M nitric acid) in a glass reactor with air sparging to ascertain the uranium/lanthanide oxide dissolution behavior prior to scaling the process. The uranium/lanthanide oxides were prepared by co-precipitating uranium/lanthanide nitrates with hydroxide and then calcined to form a mixed oxide. While the relative concentrations of the lanthanides are not representative of used nuclear fuel, the neodymium and erbium allowed ease of tracking dissolution with visible spectroscopy. Cerium was used as a surrogate for plutonium. The dissolution rate of the oxides was similar but incomplete. A miniscule amount of cerium, as cerium oxide, took several months to slowly dissolve; however, when co-precipitated with uranium and other lanthanides, a significant amount of cerium dissolved readily.

Ecophysiological and genomic analyses of a representative isolate of highly abundant Bacillus cereus strains in contaminated subsurface sediments

Abstract Bacillus cereus strain CPT56D‐587‐MTF (CPTF) was isolated from the highly contaminated Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) subsurface. This site is contaminated with high levels of nitric acid and multiple heavy metals. Amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes (V4 region) in sediment from this area revealed an amplicon sequence variant (ASV) with 100% identity to the CPTF 16S rRNA sequence. Notably, this CPTF‐matching ASV had the highest relative abundance in this community survey, with a median relative abundance of 3.77% and comprised 20%–40% of reads in some samples. Pangenomic analysis revealed that strain CPTF has expanded genomic content compared to other B. cereus species—largely due to plasmid acquisition and expansion of transposable elements. This suggests that these features are important for rapid adaptation to native environmental stressors. We connected genotype to phenotype in the context of the unique geochemistry of the site. These analyses revealed that certain genes (e.g. nitrate reductase, heavy metal efflux pumps) that allow this strain to successfully occupy the geochemically heterogenous microniches of its native site are characteristic of the B. cereus species while others such as acid tolerance are mobile genetic element associated and are generally unique to strain CPTF.

Microstructural Evolution During a Solid State Tube Pinch Weld of Type 304l Stainless Steel

Microstructure development is examined for a specialized spot weld that is used as a solid-state closure process for austenitic stainless steel tubing, referred to as pinch welding. In order to elucidate the microstructural evolution of the weld, a series of test welds were made at nominal conditions using tubing and production like components. These pinch welds normally terminate after twelve cycles of a 60 Hz AC weld process. In this study, production tubes were welded from one to twelve cycles and the microstructure and weld variables after each individual weld cycle number were characterized using radiography and optical metallography. Two electrochemical etchants were used to highlight different microstructural features. The study revealed that: (1) this type pinch weld is largely complete after about six cycles of 60 Hz AC current, half the weld time utilized; (2) the resistance, deformation, and closure length approach “steady-state” conditions after six cycles; and (3) both oxalic and nitric acid electrolytic etchants are useful for highlighting specific microstructural attributes of type 304 L stainless steel. Finally, two distinct microstructural regions can be identified for these welds: the edge of the weld, which is driven by concentrated deformation, recrystallization, and grain growth, and the center region, which is more typical of forge welding and micro-asperity breakdown followed by diffusion and grain-growth.

Cation Data for the East River Watershed, Colorado (2014-2025)

This data package contains mean values for cation concentration for water samples taken from the East River Watershed in Colorado. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been used to measure the concentrations of elements of interest simultaneously for the East River Watershed, Colorado groundwater and surface water samples to inform insights on the biogeochemistry processes within the watershed. The East River is part of the Watershed Function Scientific Focus Area (WFSFA) located in the Upper Colorado River Basin, United States. For samples collected prior to 06-16-2021, the instrumentation, Elan DRC II, PerkinElmer SCIEX, automatically switches among the three models necessary to analyze all 37 elements. These 37 elements include: (1) Lithium (Li), Beryllium (Be), Boron (B), Sodium (Na), Magnesium (Mg), Aluminium (Al), Silicon (Si), Phosphorus (P), Titanium (Ti), Cobalt (Co), Nickel (Ni), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Germanium (Ge), Arsenic (As), Rubidium (Rb), Strontium (Sr), Zirconium (Zr), Molybdenum (Mo), Silver (Ag), Cadmium (Cd), Tin (Sn), Antimony (Sb), Caesium (Cs), Barium (Ba), Europium (Eu), Lead (Pb), Thorium (Th), Uranium (U) using standard model, argon Ar as reaction gas, (2) Potassium (K), Calcium (Ca), Vanadium (V), Chromium (Cr), Manganese (Mn), Iron (Fe) using dynamic reaction cell (DRC) model, ammonia NH3 as reaction gas, and (3) Phosphorus (P) and Selenium (Se) using DRC model, oxygen O2 as reaction gas.
