Modeling and optimization of a regenerative fuel cell system using the ASPEN process simulator

The Hydrogen-Oxygen Regenerative Fuel Cell System was identified as a key component for energy storage in support of future lunar missions. Since the H2-O2 regenerative electrochemical conversion technology has not yet been tested in space applications, it is necessary to implement predictive techniques to develop initial feasible system designs. The ASPEN simulation software furnishes a constructive medium for analyzing and for optimizing such systems. A rudimentary regenerative fuel cell system design was examined using the ASPEN simulator and this modular approach allows for easy addition of supplementary ancillary components and easy integration with life support systems. The modules included in the preliminary analyses may serve as the fundamental structure for more complicated energy storage systems.

Information access in a dual-task context: testing a model of optimal strategy selection

Pilots were required to access information from a hierarchical aviation database by navigating under single-task conditions (Experiment 1) and when this task was time-shared with an altitude-monitoring task of varying bandwidth and priority (Experiment 2). In dual-task conditions, pilots had 2 viewports available, 1 always used for the information task and the other to be allocated to either task. Dual-task strategy, inferred from the decision of which task to allocate to the 2nd viewport, revealed that allocation was generally biased in favor of the monitoring task and was only partly sensitive to the difficulty of the 2 tasks and their relative priorities. Some dominant sources of navigational difficulties failed to adaptively influence selection strategy. The implications of the results are to provide tools for jumping to the top of the database, to provide 2 viewports into the common database, and to provide training as to the optimum viewport management strategy in a multitask environment.

Modeling and Optimization for Morphing Wing Concept Generation

This report consists of two major parts: 1) the approach to develop morphing wing weight equations, and 2) the approach to size morphing aircraft. Combined, these techniques allow the morphing aircraft to be sized with estimates of the morphing wing weight that are more credible than estimates currently available; aircraft sizing results prior to this study incorporated morphing wing weight estimates based on general heuristics for fixed-wing flaps (a comparable "morphing" component) but, in general, these results were unsubstantiated. This report will show that the method of morphing wing weight prediction does, in fact, drive the aircraft sizing code to different results and that accurate morphing wing weight estimates are essential to credible aircraft sizing results.

Optimizing the Model of the Viking-400 UAS

This project intends to update and redesign imperfections in the scanned 3D CAD model of the Viking 400 aircraft. This aircraft, similar to the Sierra-B UAS, will carry payloads of scientific instruments for research purposes. The goals of this project are to modify the current scanned model such that it better represents the physical qualities of the aircraft, as well as creating the features that are missing from the model. As the model was imported from a different software, many of the critical surfaces did not accurately reflect the actual aircraft. Those parts of the model were redesigned entirely so that they can be edited for future use, as well as correctly representing the aircraft as it is now. Additionally, parts of the aircraft that did not appear in the scanned model were designed and added to the new model. In order to prioritize ease of use for future missions, the model has been reorganized in a logical fashion that enables modification of specific parts of the aircraft. The organization of this model imitates the drawing tree of the Sierra-B, with the intention of maintaining a functional system of redesign, analysis, and implementation. Ultimately, this project will be a catalyst for making Viking 400 into a functional aircraft and increasing scientific research in airborne vehicles.

Intermediate Temperature Ceramic Heat Pipe Modeling and Optimization

The intermediate temperature regime of heat pipes, 450-700 K, has not been well characterized due in part to the corrosive nature of many of the working fluids, as well as the poor performance in many conventional metal envelope systems. Spacecraft nuclear electric propulsion, as well as other emerging technologies, can benefit from heat pipes with optimal performance in this intermediate regime. In this work, we have explored halide working fluids coupled with aluminum nitride shells to operate at 500-600 K and interface with a nuclear electric propulsion system. The shells have been additively manufactured and tested to ensure compatibility with the halides. Specifically, AlBr 3 , AlCl 3 , FeCl 3 , and SbBr 3 were selected owing to their higher performance and comparatively safe handling characteristics compared to other intermediate temperature working fluids. The additive manufacturing process enables highly customizable designs that integrate the heat pipe and radiator fin together, optimized for each fluid. We have evaluated the performance limits of such a heat pipe design in order to establish the feasibility of AlBr 3 in particular, and present design that achieves an areal density of 5.2 kg/m 2 and mass per unit heat performance of 0.71 kg/kW. Analysis is ongoing for all working fluids.

SERA: A Hydrogen Infrastructure Capacity Expansion Model

The Scenario Evaluation and Regionalization Analysis (SERA) model is an infrastructure planning optimization model that can guide hydrogen production, delivery, and end-use investment decisions and accelerate the adoption of low-cost hydrogen at scale, whether for fuel cell electric vehicles or non-transportation applications. In this talk, we will review the SERA model objective function as well as the data inputs and outputs. We will also look at a SERA case study identifying potential dispensed costs of hydrogen along major refueling corridors throughout the United States. In addition to the SERA model, Justin will also discuss his recent work for the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains on electrolyzer supply chain readiness, and his work for the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technologies Office and Environmental Protection Agency on the levelized cost of dispensed hydrogen for heavy-duty trucking.

Integrated topology and shape optimization in structural design

Structural optimization procedures usually start from a given design topology and vary its proportions or boundary shapes to achieve optimality under various constraints. Two different categories of structural optimization are distinguished in the literature, namely sizing and shape optimization. A major restriction in both cases is that the design topology is considered fixed and given. Questions concerning the general layout of a design (such as whether a truss or a solid structure should be used) as well as more detailed topology features (e.g., the number and connectivities of bars in a truss or the number of holes in a solid) have to be resolved by design experience before formulating the structural optimization model. Design quality of an optimized structure still depends strongly on engineering intuition. This article presents a novel approach for initiating formal structural optimization at an earlier stage, where the design topology is rigorously generated in addition to selecting shape and size dimensions. A three-phase design process is discussed: an optimal initial topology is created by a homogenization method as a gray level image, which is then transformed to a realizable design using computer vision techniques; this design is then parameterized and treated in detail by sizing and shape optimization. A fully automated process is described for trusses. Optimization of two dimensional solid structures is also discussed. Several application-oriented examples illustrate the usefulness of the proposed methodology.

An Initial Assessment of Variable Depth Liner Optimization for Ducted Proprotor Applications

The rise of the Urban Air Mobility market has spurred the design of a new generation of novel aircraft. To aid industry and researchers interested in these types of aircraft, the Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology project at NASA has developed a fleet of reference vehicles for system studies. A new six-passenger reference vehicle has recently been added to the research portfolio that has ducted proprotors for propulsors. The ducts present an opportunity to apply acoustic treatment to the interior of the duct that could target both tonal and broadband noise, representative of the sound produced by this type of propulsor. In this paper, design methodologies are presented to design a variable depth liner for this application. An optimizer is used to design multiple liners with variable chamber depths. Experimental results from normal impedance testing are compared to numerical predictions using the optimizer model and a finite element model. Results show that an optimizer can be used to design an acoustic liner with favorable performance for a broad range of frequencies, which could be appropriate for a ducted proprotor application.
