Threshold Ionization Spectroscopy and Theoretical Calculations of LnO (Ln = La and Ce)

Mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy was used to measure the vibronic spectra of LnO (Ln = La and Ce). Single-reference coupled cluster and relativistic multireference configuration calculations were carried out to compare with the measured vibronic energies. The spectrum of LaO displays a single vibronic band system, while that of CeO shows multiple ones. The ionization energies of LaO and CeO are measured as 5.2446 (6) and 5.3332(6) eV, respectively, which are a hundredfold improvement over the literature values. The vibrational energies of the neutral molecule and corresponding ion reveal the charge effect on the metal-oxygen bond of both species. The single band system in the spectrum of LaO arises from the transition of the ground state of the neutral molecule with the La(6s 1 )O(2p 6 ) valence configuration to the ground state of the singly charged ion with the La(6s o )O(2p 6 ) configuration. Here, the multiple band systems in the spectrum of CeO are attributed to the spin-orbit coupling for the Ce(4f 1 6s 1 )O(2p 6 ) configuration of the neutral molecule and an excited state for the Ce(4f 1 )O(2p 6 ) configuration of the ion.

Development of $\mathrm{AMOEBA}$ Polarizable Force Field for Rare-Earth La 3+ Interaction with Bioinspired Ligands

Rare-earth metals (REMs) are crucial for many important industries, such as power generation and storage, in addition to cancer treatment and medical imaging. One promising new REM refinement approach involves mimicking the highly selective and efficient binding of REMs observed in relatively recently discovered proteins. However, realizing any such bioinspired approach requires an understanding of the biological recognition mechanisms. In this report we developed a new classical polarizable force field based on the AMOEBA framework for modeling a lanthanum ion (La 3+ ) interacting with water, acetate, and acetamide, which have been found to coordinate the ion in proteins. The parameters were derived by comparing to high-level ab initio quantum mechanical (QM) calculations that include relativistic effects. The AMOEBA model, with advanced atomic multipoles and electronic polarization, is successful in capturing both the QM distance-dependent La 3+ –ligand interaction energies and experimental hydration free energy. A new scheme for pairwise polarization damping (POLPAIR) was developed to describe the polarization energy in La 3+ interactions with both charged and neutral ligands. Simulations of La3+ in water showed water coordination numbers and ion–water distances consistent with previous experimental and theoretical findings. Water residence time analysis revealed both fast and slow kinetics in water exchange around the ion. This new model will allow investigation of fully solvated lanthanum ion–protein systems using GPU-accelerated dynamics simulations to gain insights on binding selectivity, which may be applied to the design of synthetic analogues.

Effect of Multiple Oxygen Vacancies on the Optical and Thermodynamic Properties of La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ Perovskite

We report the oxygen vacancy concentration of perovskite changes with the work condition in applications such as oxygen carriers and oxygen sensors. To explore the effect of multiple oxygen vacancies on the optical and thermodynamic properties, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate the formation of multiple oxygen vacancies in the paramagnetic La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ . Our results show that the higher VO concentration in La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ occurs at the conditions of higher temperatures and lower oxygen partial pressures. The electrons liberated upon oxygen vacancy formation are partially localized on the nearby Fe/Co sites and partially delocalized through the lattice, with the result that the unoccupied Fe/Co states near the Fermi level decrease and the Fermi level shows an upward shift. From the results of optical absorption, the peaks from 250 to 600 nm are weakened and blue-shifted with increase of oxygen vacancy concentration, due to the decrease of empty Fe states and an upward shift of the Fermi level. The obvious change of optical absorption with oxygen vacancy concentration indicates that La 0.75 Sr 0.25 Co 0.25 Fe 0.75 O 3-δ could be a good candidate for optical oxygen sensors in the visible spectrum.

Exotic Long-Range Surface Reconstruction on La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 Thin Films

Due to an extremely diverse phase space, La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 , as with other manganites, offers a wide range of tunability and applications including colossal magnetoresistance and use as spin-polarized electrodes. Here, we study an unprecedented, exotic surface reconstruction (6 × 6) in La 1–x Sr x MnO 3 (x = 0.3) observed via low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) shows the surface is relatively flat, with unit-cell step heights, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveals a strong degree of Sr segregation at the surface. By combining electron diffraction and first-principles computations, we propose that the long-range surface reconstruction consists of a Sr-segregated surface with La (6 × 6) ordering. This study expands our understanding of manganite systems and underscores their ability to form interesting surface reconstructions, driven largely by cation segregation that can potentially be controlled for tuning surface ordering.

Twists and Puckers: Tuning Crystal Chemistry in the La(Au x Ge 1– x ) 2 Compositional Series

The physical properties of solid-state materials are closely tied to their crystal structure, yet our understanding of how competing structural arrangements energetically compare is limited. In this work, we explore how small differences in composition affect structure in the La(Au x Ge 1-x ) 2 series of compounds, comprising four unique structure types between LaGe 2 and LaAu 2 . This family includes the previously unknown AlB2-type compound with the stoichiometry La(Au 0.375 Ge 0.625 ) 2 , as well as La(Au 0.25 Ge 0.75 ) 2 , an intergrowth of the AlB 2 and ThSi 2 structure types. We then study the chemical forces driving the structure changes, including using phonon band structure calculations and DFT Chemical Pressure to evaluate atomic size effects. These calculations show that the parent AlB 2 structure type is disfavored in Au-rich compounds due to soft atomic motions along the c axis. The instability of AlB 2 -type LaAuGe is confirmed by the presence of imaginary modes in the phonon band structure that correspond to a ‘puckering’ of the hexagonal AlB 2 -type lattice, resulting in the experimentally observed LiGaGe structure type. The impact of size effects is less clear for Au-poor compositions; instead, ‘twisting’ the AlB 2 structure type to form the ThSi 2 type opens a pseudogap at the Fermi level in the electronic density of states. Here, this investigation demonstrates how crystal structure in solid-state materials can be compositionally tuned based on balancing size and electronics when multiple structure types are in close thermodynamic competition.

Low-temperature grapho-epitaxial La-substituted BiFeO 3 on metallic perovskite

Bismuth ferrite has garnered considerable attention as a promising candidate for magnetoelectric spin-orbit coupled logic-in-memory. As model systems, epitaxial BiFeO 3 thin films have typically been deposited at relatively high temperatures (650–800 °C), higher than allowed for direct integration with silicon-CMOS platforms. Here, we circumvent this problem by growing lanthanum-substituted BiFeO 3 at 450 °C (which is reasonably compatible with silicon-CMOS integration) on epitaxial BaPb 0.75 Bi 0.25 O 3 electrodes. Notwithstanding the large lattice mismatch between the La-BiFeO 3 , BaPb 0.75 Bi 0.25 O 3 , and SrTiO 3 (001) substrates, all the layers in the heterostructures are well ordered with a [001] texture. Polarization mapping using atomic resolution STEM imaging and vector mapping established the short-range polarization ordering in the low temperature grown La-BiFeO 3 . Current-voltage, pulsed-switching, fatigue, and retention measurements follow the characteristic behavior of high-temperature grown La-BiFeO 3 , where SrRuO 3 typically serves as the metallic electrode. These results provide a possible route for realizing epitaxial multiferroics on complex-oxide buffer layers at low temperatures and opens the door for potential silicon-CMOS integration.

Existence of La-site antisite defects in LaMO 3 (M = Mn, Fe, and Co) predicted with many-body diffusion quantum Monte Carlo

The properties of LaMO 3 (M: 3d transition metal) perovskite crystals are significantly dependent on point defects, whether introduced accidentally or intentionally. The most studied defects in La-based perovskites are the oxygen vacancies and doping impurities on the La and M sites. Here, we identify that intrinsic antisite defects, the replacement of La by the transition metal, M, can be formed under M-rich and O-poor growth conditions, based on results of an accurate many-body ab initio approach. Our fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (FNDMC) calculations of LaMO 3 (M = Mn, Fe, and Co) find that such antisite defects can have low formation energies and are magnetized. Complementary density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations show that Mn antisite defects in LaMnO 3 may cause the p-type electronic conductivity. These features could affect spintronics, redox catalysis, and other broad applications. Our bulk validation studies establish that FNDMC reproduces the antiferromagnetic state of LaMnO 3 , whereas DFT with PBE (Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof), SCAN (strongly constrained and appropriately normed), and the LDA+U (local density approximation with Coulomb U) functionals all favor ferromagnetic states, at variance with experiment.

A series of Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) rare earth thiophosphates with two distinct thiophosphate units [P V S 4 ] 3- and [P IV 2 S 6 ] 4-

A series of rubidium rare earth thiophosphates with the formula Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Gd) were synthesized using the high temperature molten flux crystal growth method utilizing a RbBr flux. Single crystals of all title compounds, as well as phase pure powders of the La-, Ce-, and Sm-containing compositions, were obtained. Single crystals of the title compounds were characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction for structure and phase identification. Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system adopting the P2 1 /n space group for the large rare earths (Ln = La, Ce, Pr) and the C2/c space group for the smaller rare earths (Ln = Nd, Sm, Gd). This Rb 4 Ln 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 series is a rare example of thiophosphates containing both tetrahedral [P V S 4 ] 3– and dimeric [P IV 2 S 6 ] 4– thiophosphate units that, in this structural family, link corrugated rare earth sulfide chains into sheets. Here, the band gaps of the materials were determined from UV–Vis data and the fluorescence spectrum of Rb 4 Ce 2 (P 2 S 6 )(PS 4 ) 2 was collected. Optical band gaps were estimated to be 2.9 and 2.4 for the Nd and Sm analogues, respectively.

Floating zone crystal growth, structure, and properties of a cubic Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 garnet-type lithium-ion conductor

As a promising candidate for solid-state electrolytes in Li-ion batteries, the garnet-type Li-ion conductor series Li 5+x La 3 Nb 2-x Zr x O 12 (LLNZO) (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) exhibits high ionic conductivity at room temperature. However, no previous single-crystal growth or characterization has been reported for LLNZO compositions 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. To obtain a complete understanding of the trend in the structure–property relationship in this class of materials, we used the floating zone (FZ) method to grow a single crystal of Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 that was 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length. Using Laue neutron single-crystal diffraction, two distinct Li sites were observed: tetrahedral 24d and octahedral 96h sites. The maximum entropy method (MEM) based on neutron single-crystal diffraction data was used to map Li nuclear density and estimate that the bottleneck of Li transport exists between neighboring tetrahedral and octahedral sites, and that Li is delocalized between split octahedral sites. Room-temperature Li-ion conductivity in Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 measured with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was 1.37 × 10 -4 S cm -1 . The Li migration activation energy was estimated to be 0.50 eV from EIS and 0.47 eV from dielectric relaxation measurements. The Li-ion jump attempt rate was estimated to be 1.47 × 10 12 Hz while the time scale of successful migration is 10 -7 to 10 -6 s.

Uptake and binding of La 3+ and Cr 3+ ions by alkali metal substituted alpha-zirconium phosphate

The conversion of alpha-zirconium phosphate, Zr(HPO 4 ) 2 ·H 2 O, to the K-, Rb-, and Cs-phases and the subsequent ion exchange behavior of these alkali metal phases, A-ZrP, with La 3+ and Cr 3+ have been investigated. The conversion to the A-ZrP phases was achieved by reaction with metal chloride, metal hydroxide solution, and confirmed through various techniques, including X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetry analysis, IR spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of material hydration, which increased the interlayer distance, was also examined. The ion exchange behavior of the A-ZrP showed strong affinity for both La 3+ , a representative for trivalent lanthanide metals, and Cr 3+ , a representative for the trivalent transition metals, with a rapid, near quantitative removal of the M 3+ ions at a pH of 3 when the ion concentration was ≤25% of the ion exchange capacity of the materials. Additionally, the ion affinity was shown to be pH and concentration-dependent, decreasing with a decrease in pH or an increase in ion concentration. Lastly, the binding strength of La- and Cr-loaded ZrP materials was examined through a series of leaching experiments in a carbonate buffer, phosphate buffer, HEPES buffer, and a series of EDTA solutions at various concentrations. No observable leaching occurred in the carbonate buffer, phosphate buffer, HEPES buffer, or when the EDTA concentration was below 0.1 mM. These results highlight the potential for the A-ZrP materials to provide a platform for trivalent transition metal and trivalent lanthanide radionuclide capture for various applications.

Direct neutron-diffraction-based measurement of magnetic order in brownmillerite SrCoO 2.5 and La 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 2.5 thin films

Epitaxial cobaltites have emerged as exemplary materials for electrochemical gating, in large part due to their topotactic perovskite (P) ↔ brownmillerite (BM) transformations. SrCoO 3-δ , for example, can be cycled between metallic ferromagnetic P SrCoO 3 and insulating BM SrCoO 2.5 , realizing exceptional modulation of electronic, thermal, and optical properties. It is often presumed that such cycling also generates ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic (F-AF) modulation due to the G-type AF order in bulk SrCoO 2.5 . Little is understood about magnetism in thin-film BM SrCoO 2.5 , however, meaning that the true magnetic property modulation is unclear. We address this here through a neutron diffraction study of BM La 1-x Sr x CoO 2.5 films at x = 0.5 and 1.0. Lightly compressively strained SrCoO 2.5 films are shown to retain G-type AF order, albeit with suppressed Néel temperature (~340 K). Of high interest for AF spintronics, room-temperature F–AF cycling is thus possible across the SrCoO 3-δ P ↔ BM transformation. At x = 0.5, however, BM La 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 2.5 films are found to exhibit no detectable G-type AF order but instead weak F order (Curie temperature ~115 K), unveiling a La 0.5 Sr 0.5 CoO 3-δ phase diagram with two distinct F phases. These results thus uncover new, unanticipated magnetic phase behavior in these materials, in addition to being directly relevant to cobaltite-based magnetoionics.

Magnetic properties of the itinerant ferromagnet LaCrGe 3 under pressure studied by La 139 NMR

139 La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements under pressure (p = 0 – 2.64 GPa) have been carried out to investigate the static and dynamic magnetic properties of the itinerant ferromagnet LaCrGe 3 . 139 La -NMR spectra for all measured pressures in the ferromagnetically ordered state show a large shift due to the internal field induction |B int | ~ 4 T at the La site produced by Cr ordered moments. The change in B int by less than 5% with p up to 2.64 GPa indicates that the Cr 3d moments are robust under pressure. The temperature dependence of NMR shift and B int suggest that the ferromagnetic order develops below ~50 K under higher pressures in a magnetic field of ~7.2 T. Based on the analysis of NMR data using the self-consistent-renormalization (SCR) theory, the spin fluctuations in the paramagnetic state well above T C are revealed to be three-dimensional ferromagnetic throughout the measured p region.

Structure of the high-spin, 𝛽-decaying state in the neutron-rich nucleus 146 La

Excited structures in 146 Ce were populated in 𝛽 decay of the high-spin state in the neutron-rich nucleus 146 La. The decay scheme of the high-spin, 𝛽-decaying state in 146 La was revised with respect to previous studies and evaluated nuclear data. Here, the structure of 146 La is discussed in the framework of the deformed Nilsson model and systematics of known quasiparticle structures in the region.

Materials preparation, single-crystal growth, and the phase diagram of the cuprate high-temperature superconductor La 1.6-x Nd 0.4 Sr x CuO 4

One branch of the La-214 family of cuprate superconductors, La 1.6-x Nd 0.4 Sr x CuO 4 (NdLSCO), has been of significant and sustained interest, in large part because it displays the full complexity of the phase diagram for canonical hole-doped, high TC superconductivity, while also displaying relatively low superconducting critical temperatures. The low superconducting TC’s imply that experimentally accessible magnetic fields can suppress the superconductivity to zero temperature. In particular, this has enabled various transport and thermodynamic studies of the T = 0 ground state in Nd-LSCO, free of superconductivity, across the critical doping p* = 0.23 where the pseudogap phase ends. The strong dependence of its superconducting properties on its crystal symmetry has itself motivated careful studies of the Nd-LSCO structural phase diagram. This paper provides a systematic study and summary of the materials preparation and characterization of both single crystal and polycrystalline samples of Nd-LSCO. Single-phase polycrystalline samples with x spanning the range from 0.01 to 0.40 have been synthesized, and large single crystals of La 1.6-x Nd 0.4 Sr x CuO 4 for select x across the region (0.07, 0.12, 0.17, 0.19, 0.225, 0.24, and 0.26) were grown by the optical floating zone method. Furthermore, systematic neutron and X-ray diffraction studies on these samples were performed at both low and room temperatures, 10 K and 300 K, respectively. These studies allowed us to follow the various structural phase transitions and propose an updated structural phase diagram for NdLSCO. In particular, we found that the low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase ends at a critical doping p LTT = 0.255±0.005, clearly separated from p*.

Relationship between A-site cation and magnetic structure in 3d–5d–4f double perovskite iridates Ln 2 NiIrO 6 ( Ln = La, Pr, Nd)

We report a comprehensive investigation of Ln 2 NiIrO 6 (Ln=La, Pr, Nd) using thermodynamic and transport properties, neutron powder diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the role of A-site cations on the magnetic interactions in this family of hybrid 3d–5d–4f compositions. Magnetic structure determination using neutron diffraction reveals antiferromagnetism for La 2 NiIrO 6 , a collinear ferrimagnetic Ni and Ir state that is driven to long-range antiferromagnetism upon the onset of Nd ordering in Nd 2 NiIrO 6 , and a noncollinear ferrimagnetic Ni and Ir sublattice interpenetrated by a ferromagnetic Pr lattice for Pr 2 NiIrO 6 . For Pr 2 NiIrO 6 , heat-capacity results reveal the presence of two independent magnetic sublattices, and transport resistivity indicates insulating behavior and a conduction pathway that is thermally mediated. Here, a first principles DFT calculation elucidates the existence of the two independent magnetic sublattices within Pr 2 NiIrO 6 and offers insight into the behavior in La 2 NiIrO 6 and Nd 2 NiIrO 6 . Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is consistent with spin-orbit coupling splitting the t 2 g manifold of octahedral Ir 4+ into a J eff = 1/2 and J eff = 3/2 state for all members of the series considered.

Tunable polar distortions and magnetism in Gd 𝑥 ⁢La 1−𝑥 ⁢PtSb epitaxial films

Hexagonal 𝐴⁢𝐵⁢𝐶 intermetallics are predicted to have tunable ferroelectric, topological, and magnetic properties as a function of the polar buckling of 𝐵⁢𝐶 atomic planes. Here, we report the impact of isovalent lanthanide substitution on the buckling, structural phase transitions, and electronic and magnetic properties of Gd 𝑥 ⁢La 1−𝑥 ⁢PtSb films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on 𝑐 plane sapphire substrates. The Gd 𝑥 ⁢La 1−𝑥 ⁢PtSb films form a solid solution from 𝑥=0 to 𝑥=1 and retain the polar hexagonal structure (𝑃⁢6 3 ⁢𝑚⁢𝑐) out to 𝑥 ≤ 0.95. With increasing 𝑥, the PtSb buckling increases and the out-of-plane lattice constant 𝑐 decreases due to the lanthanide contraction. While hexagonal LaPtSb is a highly conductive polar metal, the carrier density decreases with 𝑥 until an abrupt phase transition to a zero band overlap semimetal is found for cubic GdPtSb at 𝑥=1. The magnetic susceptibility peaks at small but finite 𝑥, which we attribute to Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling between localized 4⁢𝑓 moments, whose concentration increases with 𝑥, and free carriers that decrease with 𝑥. Samples with 𝑥≥0.3 show antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss behavior and a Neel temperature that increases with 𝑥. The Gd 𝑥 ⁢La 1−𝑥 ⁢PtSb system provides opportunities to dramatically alter the polar buckling and concentration of local 4⁢𝑓 moments.

Assessing spin-density wave formation in La 3 Ni 2 O 7 from electronic structure calculations

Here, we employ correlated density-functional theory methods (DFT + Hubbard U) to investigate the spin-density wave state of the bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nickelate La 3 Ni 2 O 7 which becomes superconducting under pressure. We predict that the ground state of this bilayer RP material has traits of both the double spin-stripe and the single spin-charge stripe phases proposed in the literature as it corresponds to in-plane up/up′/down/down′ diagonal stripes with up/down being high spin (formally Ni 2+ : d 8 ), and up′ /down′ being low spin (formally Ni 3+ : d 7 ). The main feature of this solution (that is insulating even at U = 0) is the dominant role of the d x 2 −y 2 bands around the Fermi level, which would become doped with the introduction of electrons via oxygen vacancies. In spite of the similarity with cuprates in terms of the dominant role of d x 2 −y 2 bands, some differences are apparent in the magnetic ground state of La 3 Ni 2 O 7 : the antiferromagnetic out-of-plane coupling within the bilayer (linked to the d z 2 orbitals forming a spin-singlet-like configuration) is found to be the dominant one while in-plane interactions are reduced due to the stripe order of the ground state. With pressure, this striped magnetic ground state remains similar in nature but the increase in bandwidth quickly transitions La 3 Ni 2 O 7 into a metallic state with all the activity close to the Fermi level involving, to a large extent, d x 2 −y 2 orbitals. This is reminiscent of the cuprates and may provide key insights into how superconductivity arises in this material under pressure.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity In Polycrystalline La 3 Ni 2 O 7 − δ

We synthesized polycrystalline La 3 Ni 2 O 7 − δ ( δ ≈ 0.0 7 ) samples by using the sol-gel method without postannealing under high oxygen pressure, and then measured temperature-dependent resistivity under various hydrostatic pressures up to 18 GPa by using the cubic anvil and two-stage multianvil apparatus. We find that the density-wave-like anomaly in resistivity is progressively suppressed with increasing pressure and the resistivity drop corresponding to the onset of superconductivity emerges at pressure as low as ∼ 6 GPa . Zero resistivity is achieved at 9 GPa below T c zero ≈ 6.6 K , which increases quickly with pressure to 41 K at 18 GPa. However, the diamagnetic response was not detected in the ac magnetic susceptibility measurements up to 15 GPa, indicating a filamentary nature of the observed superconductivity in the studied pressure range. The constructed T − P phase diagram reveals an intimate relationship between superconductivity, density-wave-like order, and the strange-metal-like behaviors. The observation of zero-resistance state in the polycrystalline La 3 Ni 2 O 7 − δ samples under high pressures not only corroborates the recent report of superconductivity in the pressurized La 3 Ni 2 O 7 crystals but also facilitates further studies on this emerging family of nickelate high- T c superconductors.
