Lyapunov growth in quantum spin chains

The Ising spin chain with longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields is often used in studies of quantum chaos, displaying both chaotic and integrable regions in its parameter space. However, even at a strongly chaotic point this model does not exhibit Lyapunov growth of the commutator squared of spin operators, as this observable saturates before exponential growth can manifest itself (even in situations where a spatial suppression factor makes the initial commutator small). In this work, we extend this model from the spin 1/2 Ising model to higher spins, demonstrate numerically that a window of exponential growth opens up for sufficiently large spin, and extract a quantity which corresponds to a notion of a Lyapunov exponent. In the classical infinite-spin limit, we identify and compute the appropriate classical analog of the commutator squared, and show that the corresponding exponent agrees with the infinite-spin limit extracted from the quantum spin chain.

Quantum dynamics in strongly driven random dipolar magnets

The random dipolar magnet LiHo x Y 1– x F 4 enters a strongly frustrated regime for small Ho 3+ concentrations with x < 0.05. In this regime, the magnetic moments of the Ho 3+ ions experience small quantum corrections to the common Ising approximation of LiHo x Y 1– x F 4 , which lead to a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry breaking and small, degeneracy breaking energy shifts between different eigenstates. Here we show that destructive interference between two almost degenerate excitation pathways burns spectral holes in the magnetic susceptibility of strongly driven magnetic moments in LiHo x Y 1– x F 4 . Such spectral holes in the susceptibility, microscopically described in terms of Fano resonances, can already occur in setups of only two or three frustrated moments, for which the driven level scheme has the paradigmatic Λ shape. For larger clusters of magnetic moments, the corresponding level schemes separate into almost isolated many-body Λ schemes, in the sense that either the transition matrix elements between them are negligibly small or the energy difference of the transitions is strongly off-resonant to the drive. This enables the observation of Fano resonances, caused by many-body quantum corrections to the common Ising approximation also in the thermodynamic limit. Finally, we discuss its dependence on the driving strength and frequency as well as the crucial role that is played by lattice dissipation.

Dynamics of a fractal set of first-order magnetic phase transitions in frustrated Lu 2 CoMnO 6

The axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model predicts a fractal (infinite) set of phases with incommensurate wave vectors that are separated by first-order phase boundaries. This complexity results from a simple frustration condition between nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions along a chain of Ising spins. Using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), we investigate the surprising antiferromagnetic dynamics that emerge from such a complex phase diagram over a wide range of temperatures. In this work, we present XPCS measurements of the frustrated magnetic chain compound Lu 2 CoMnO 6 and Monte Carlo simulations. Incommensurate magnetic Bragg peaks slide towards commensurate “up-up-down-down” spin order with decreasing temperature and increasing time. Both simulation and experiment support a counterintuitive “upside-down” temperature dependence of the magnetic dynamics: at higher temperatures in the region of first-order phase boundaries, slower dynamics are observed where the speckle maintains its coherence. At the lowest temperatures, where part of the sample adopts commensurate order, the dynamics speed up and result in fast decoherence.

Evidence for deconfined U(1) gauge theory at the transition between toric code and double semion

Building on quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study the phase diagram of a one-parameter Hamiltonian interpolating between trivial and topological Ising paramagnets in two dimensions, which are dual to the toric code and the double semion. We discover an intermediate phase with stripe order which spontaneously breaks the protecting Ising symmetry. Remarkably, we find evidence that this intervening phase is gapless due to the incommensurability of the stripe pattern and that it is dual to a $U(1)$ gauge theory exhibiting Cantor deconfinement.

Z 2 topological order and first-order quantum phase transitions in systems with combinatorial gauge symmetry

We study a generalization of the two-dimensional transverse-field Ising model, combining both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic two-body interactions, that hosts exact global and local Z 2 gauge symmetries. Using exact diagonalization and stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo methods, we confirm the existence of the topological phase in line with previous theoretical predictions. Our simulation results show that the transition between the confined topological phase and the deconfined paramagnetic phase is of first order, in contrast to the conventional Z 2 lattice gauge model in which the transition maps onto that of the standard Ising model and is continuous. We further generalize the model by replacing the transverse field on the gauge spins with a ferromagnetic X X interaction while keeping the local gauge symmetry intact. We find that the Z 2 topological phase remains stable, while the paramagnetic phase is replaced by a ferromagnetic phase. The topological-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition is also of first order. For both models, we discuss the low-energy spinon and vison excitations of the topological phase and their avoided level crossings associated with the first-order quantum phase transitions.

Scaling behavior of order parameters for the hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca, Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7

Here, we show that in contrast to the conventional view of a mean-field Landau-type behavior, the oxygen octahedral tilt ($\textit{R}$) and polarization (P) in the $A_3B_2\text{O}_7$ Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7 exhibits the scaling behavior of a 2D Ising class near the para-to-ferroelectric transition temperature ($T_c$). We also show that $\textit{P}$ exhibits an additional transition from a 2D Ising to a 3D mean-field critical behavior at a temperature $T_{\text{d}} < T_{\text{c}}$, which is driven by enhanced interlayer dipolar correlations due to an increase in the ferroelectrically active $\textit{B}$-site centered dipoles.

Unified theory of hastatic order and antiferromagnetism in URu 2 Si 2

The hidden-order phase of URu 2 Si 2 has eluded identification for over 35 years. A compelling proposal that explains the Ising heavy-fermion nature of the material is hastatic order: a symmetry-breaking heavy Fermi liquid arising from a spinorial microscopic hybridization. The original hastatic proposal cannot microscopically model the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic phase; and while it predicts a spinorial order parameter, it does not provide any detectable signatures of the spinorial nature. Here, we present a more realistic microscopic model of hastatic order in URu 2 Si 2 based on two conducting electron bands and explore its phase diagram in detail. Our model nontrivially preserves the Ising heavy-fermion physics of the original, while allowing us to tune between the antiferromagnet and hidden order using pressure analogs and magnetic field. Furthermore, our model is also consistent with recent phenomenological predictions of not one, but two, vector order parameters associated with the spinorial order that provide the first microscopic predictions for detecting the spinorial nature.

Floquet-driven indirect exchange interaction mediated by topological insulator surface states

Light drives offer a potential tool for the dynamical control of magnetic interactions in matter. We theoretically investigate the indirect exchange coupling between two parallel chains of magnetic impurities on the surface of a topological insulator, driven by a time-periodic circularly polarized light field in the high-frequency, off-resonant regime. We derive a closed-form analytic expression for the spin susceptibility of the photon-dressed topological insulator surface states and obtain the irradiation dependence of the Ising, Heisenberg, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange couplings between the impurity chains. Our results show a two-pronged modification of these exchange couplings by periodic drives. First, the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) oscillation period of the exchange couplings can be extended by enhancing the driving strength. Second, increasing driving strength enhances the envelope of RKKY oscillations of the Ising type while suppressing those of the Heisenberg type and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type. Furthermore, our work provides useful insights for realizing Floquet engineering of collinear and noncollinear indirect exchange interactions in topological insulating systems.

Gallery of soft modes: Theory and experiment at a ferromagnetic quantum phase transition

We examine the low-energy excitations in the vicinity of the quantum critical point in LiHoF4, a physical realization of the Transverse Field Ising Model, focusing on the long-range fluctuations which soften to zero energy at the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. Microwave spectroscopy in tunable loop-gap resonator structures identifies and characterizes the electronuclear soft mode and higher-energy electronuclear states as a function of frequency and magnetic fields applied transverse and parallel to the Ising axis. These are understood in the context of a theoretical model of a soft electronuclear mode that interacts with soft photons as well as soft phonons. We identify competing infrared divergences at the quantum critical point, coming from the photons and the electronuclear soft mode. It is an incomplete cancellation of these divergences that leads to the muted but distinct signatures observed in the experiments. The application of a longitudinal magnetic field gaps the soft mode. As a result, measurements well away from the quantum critical point reveal a set of "Walker'' modes associated with ferromagnetic domain dynamics.

Universal model of Floquet operator Krylov space

It is shown that the stroboscopic time evolution under a Floquet unitary, in any spatial dimension, and of any Hermitian operator, can be mapped to an operator Krylov space, which is identical to that generated by the edge operator of the noninteracting Floquet transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) in one-spatial dimension, and with inhomogeneous Ising and transverse field couplings. The latter has four topological phases reflected by the absence (topologically trivial) or presence (topologically nontrivial) of edge modes at 0 and/or π quasienergies. It is shown that the Floquet dynamics share certain universal features characterized by how the Krylov parameters vary in the topological phase diagram of the Floquet TFIM with homogeneous couplings. Furthermore, these results are highlighted through examples, all chosen for numerical convenience to be in one spatial dimension: nonintegrable Floquet spin 1/2 chains and Floquet Z 3 clock model where the latter hosts period-tripled edge modes.

Deconfined classical criticality in the anisotropic quantum spin- 1 2 XY model on the square lattice

The anisotropic quantum spin- 1 2 XY model on a linear chain was solved by Lieb, Schultz, and Mattis [] and shown to display a continuous quantum phase transition at the O(2) symmetric point separating two gapped phases with competing Ising long-range order. For the square lattice, the following is known. The two competing Ising ordered phases extend to finite temperatures, up to a boundary where a transition to the paramagnetic phase occurs, and meet at the O(2) symmetric critical line along the temperature axis that ends at a tricritical point at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature where the two competing phases meet the paramagnetic phase. We show that the first-order zero-temperature (quantum) phase transition that separates the competing phases as a function of the anisotropy parameter is smoothed by thermal fluctuations into deconfined classical criticality. Quartic cumulant of baryon number in the presence of a QCD critical point

In the context of the ongoing search for the QCD critical point at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, we study the equation of state near the critical point in the temperature and baryon chemical potential plane. We use the parametric representation introduced in earlier literature, which maps the universal three-dimensional Ising equation of state onto the QCD phase diagram using several non-universal parameters. We focus on the quartic cumulant of the baryon number, or baryon number susceptibility χ$^ B_4$, which can be accessed experimentally via net-proton fluctuation kurtosis measurements. It was originally predicted, through universality arguments based on the leading singular contribution, that χ$^ B_4$ and net-proton kurtosis should show a specific nonmonotonic behavior due to the critical point. In particular, when following the freeze-out curve on the phase diagram by decreasing beam energy, the kurtosis is expected to dip, and then peak, when the beam energy scan passes close to the critical point. We study the effects of the nonuniversal and thus far unknown parameters of the Ising-to-QCD mapping on the behavior of χ$^ B_4$. We find that, while the peak remains a solid feature, the presence of the critical point does not necessarily cause a dip in χ$^ B_4$ on the freeze-out line below the transition temperature. The critical point contribution to the dip appears only for a narrow set of mapping parameters, when subleading singular terms are sufficiently suppressed.

Phase diagram of generalized XY model using the tensor renormalization group

We use the higher-order tensor renormalization group method to study the two-dimensional generalized XY model that admits integer and half-integer vortices. This model is the deformation of the classical XY model and has a rich phase structure consisting of nematic, ferromagnetic, and disordered phases and three transition lines belonging to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless and Ising class. We explore the model for a wide range of temperatures, T , and the deformation parameter, Δ , and compute specific heat along with integer and half-integer magnetic susceptibility, finding both Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like and Ising-like transitions and the region where they meet. Signatures of Ultrafast Reversal of Excitonic Order in Ta2NiSe 5

In the presence of electron-phonon coupling, an excitonic insulator harbors two degenerate ground states described by an Ising-type order parameter. Starting from a microscopic Hamiltonian, we derive the equations of motion for the Ising order parameter in the phonon coupled excitonic insulator Ta 2 NiSe 5 and show that it can be controllably reversed on ultrashort timescales using appropriate laser pulse sequences. Using a combination of theory and time-resolved optical reflectivity measurements, we report evidence of such order parameter reversal in Ta 2 NiSe 5 based on the anomalous behavior of its coherently excited order-parameter-coupled phonons. Finally, our Letter expands the field of ultrafast order parameter control beyond spin and charge ordered materials.

Quantum Criticality of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity with Relativity

We study a quantum phase transition from a massless to massive Dirac fermion phase in a new two-dimensional bipartite lattice model of electrons that is amenable to sign-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Importantly, interactions in our model are not only invariant under SU(2) symmetries of spin and charge like the Hubbard model, but they also preserve an Ising-like electron spin-charge flip symmetry. From unbiased fermion bag Monte Carlo simulations with up to 2304 sites, we show that the massive fermion phase spontaneously breaks this Ising symmetry, picking either antiferromagnetism or superconductivity, and that the transition at which both orders are simultaneously quantum critical belongs to a new “chiral spin-charge symmetric” universality class. We explain our observations using effective potential and renormalization group calculations within the framework of a continuum field theory.

Stabilizing Fluctuating Spin-Triplet Superconductivity in Graphene via Induced Spin-Orbit Coupling

A recent experiment showed that a proximity-induced Ising spin-orbit coupling enhances the spin-triplet superconductivity in Bernal bilayer graphene. Here, in this work, we show that, due to the nearly perfect spin rotation symmetry of graphene, the fluctuations of the spin orientation of the triplet order parameter suppress the superconducting transition to nearly zero temperature. Our analysis shows that both an Ising spin-orbit coupling and an in-plane magnetic field can eliminate these low-lying fluctuations and can greatly enhance the transition temperature, consistent with the recent experiment. Our model also suggests the possible existence of a phase at small anisotropy and magnetic field which exhibits quasilong-range ordered spin-singlet charge 4⁢e superconductivity, even while the triplet 2⁢e superconducting order only exhibits short-ranged correlations. Finally, we discuss relevant experimental signatures.

Thermal Probes of Phonon-Coupled Kitaev Spin Liquids: From Accurate Extraction of Quantized Edge Transport to Anyon Interferometry

Recent theoretical studies inspired by experiments on the Kitaev magnet α-RuCl 3 highlight the nontrivial impact of phonons on the thermal Hall conductivity of chiral topological phases. Here, we introduce mixed mesoscopic-macroscopic devices that allow refined thermal-transport probes of non-Abelian spin liquids with Ising topological order. These devices feature a quantum-coherent region with quantized or negligible phonon conductance, flanked by macroscopic lobes that facilitate efficient thermalization between chiral Majorana edge modes and bulk phonons. We show that our devices enable (i) accurate determination of the quantized thermal Hall conductivity, (ii) identification of non-Abelian Ising anyons via the temperature dependence of the thermal conductance, and, most interestingly, (iii) single-anyon detection through heat-based anyon interferometry. Analogous results apply broadly to phonon-coupled chiral topological orders.

Precision Reconstruction of Rational Conformal Field Theory from Exact Fixed-Point Tensor Network

The novel concept of entanglement renormalization and its corresponding tensor network renormalization technique have been highly successful in developing a controlled real-space renormalization group (RG) scheme. Numerically approximate fixed-point (FP) tensors are widely used to extract the conformal data of the underlying conformal field theory (CFT) describing critical phenomena. In this paper, we present an explicit analytical construction of the FP tensor for 2D rational CFT. We define it as a correlation function between the “boundary-changing operators” (BCO) on triangles. Our construction fully captures all the real-space RG conditions. We also provide concrete examples, such as Ising, Yang-Lee, and tricritical Ising models, to compute the scaling dimensions explicitly based on the corresponding FP tensor. The BCO descendants turn out to be an optimal basis such that truncation in bond dimensions naturally produces comparable accuracies with the leading existing FP algorithms. Interestingly, our construction of FP tensors is closely related to a strange correlator, where the holographic picture naturally emerges. Our results also open a new door toward understanding CFT in higher dimensions. Published by the American Physical Society 2025
