Mechanistic Insights into Acetate Selectivity on Intermetallic CuPd(110) in CO Reduction

Experimental studies demonstrate that CuPd(110) uniquely favors acetate formation during CO reduction (CORR), contrasting with the preference for ethylene on Cu surfaces. To elucidate this selectivity, we employed explicit solvation density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the reaction mechanism from both thermodynamic and kinetic angles. Here, our findings reveal that on CuPd(110), the acetate-pathway intermediate H 2 CCO is thermodynamically favored at experimental conditions, while CHCHO─a precursor to ethylene─is preferred on Cu(111). Beyond thermodynamics, we find that H 2 CCO is kinetically accessible under the experimental conditions on CuPd(110), aiding acetate formation. Electron density difference analyses further corroborate distinct protonation preferences supporting this mechanism. We propose a thermodynamic screening parameter based on the Gibbs free energy, G H 2 CCO < G CHCHO , as a guide for designing Cu-based catalysts with enhanced acetate selectivity. These results offer critical mechanistic insights into the CORR product distribution and a rational framework for future catalyst design.

Complex magnetic phases in the polar tetragonal intermetallic NdCoGe 3

Polar materials can host a variety of topologically significant magnetic phases, which often emerge from a modulated magnetic ground state. Relatively few noncentrosymmetric tetragonal materials have been shown to host topological spin textures and new candidate materials are necessary to expand the current theoretical models. This manuscript reports on the anisotropic magnetism in the polar, tetragonal material NdCoGe 3 via thermodynamic and neutron diffraction measurements. The previously reported H - T phase diagram is updated to include several additional phases, which exist for both H = 0 and with an applied field H ⊥ c . Neutron diffraction data reveal that the magnetic structures below T N 1 = 3.70 K and T N 2 = 3.50 K are incommensurate, with a ground-state magnetic order that is incommensurate in all directions with the propagation vector $\vec{k}$ = (0.494, 0.0044, 0.385) at 1.8 K. A unique magnetic structure solution is not achievable, but the possible single-$\vec{k}$ and $\vec{k}$ spin models are discussed. These results demonstrate that NdCoGe 3 hosts complicated magnetic order derived from modulated magnetic moments.

Al2O3 fiber strength degradation in metal and intermetallic matrix composites

The mechanisms for fiber damage in single crystal Al2O3 fiber-reinforced composites were investigated. Both fiber fragmentation and fiber strength degradation were observed in composites with a variety of matrix compositions. Four mechanisms that may be contributing to the fiber strength loss have been proposed and include matrix reaction, reaction with binders, residual stress-induced damage, and pressure from hot pressing. The effect of matrix reaction was separated from the other three effects by sputter-coating the matrices on cleaned fibers and annealing with a temperature profile that simulates processing conditions. These experiments revealed that Y and Cr in FeCrAlY base alloys and Zr in NiAl alloys reacted with the fiber, and grooves and adherent particles were formed on the fiber surface which were responsible for the strength loss. The effects of the matrix reaction appeared to dominate over the other possible mechanisms, although evidence for reaction with binders was also found. Ridges on the fiber surface, which reflected the grain boundaries of the matrix, were also observed. In order for single-crystal Al2O3 to be used as a fiber in MMC's and IMC's, a matrix or protective coating which minimizes matrix reaction during processing will be necessary. Of the matrices investigated, the Thermo-span(sup TM) alloy was the least damaging to fiber properties.

60NiTi Intermetallic Material Evaluation for Lightweight and Corrosion Resistant Spherical Sliding Bearings for Aerospace Applications, Report on NASA-Kamatics SAA3-1288

Under NASA Space Act Agreement (SAA3-1288), NASA Glenn Research Center and the Kamatics subsidiary of the Kaman Corporation conducted the experimental evaluation of spherical sliding bearings made with 60NiTi inner races. The goal of the project was to assess the feasibility of manufacturing lightweight, corrosion resistant bearings utilizing 60NiTi for aerospace and industrial applications. NASA produced the bearings in collaboration with Abbott Ball Corporation and Kamatics fabricated bearing assemblies utilizing their standard reinforced polymer liner material. The assembled bearings were tested in oscillatory motion at a load of 4.54 kN (10,000 lb), according to the requirements of the plain bearing specification SAE AS81820. Several test bearings were exposed to hydraulic fluid or aircraft deicing fluid prior to and during testing. The results show that the 60NiTi bearings exhibit tribological performance comparable to conventional stainless steel (440C) bearings. Further, exposure of 60NiTi bearings to the contaminant fluids had no apparent performance effect. It is concluded that 60NiTi is a feasible bearing material for aerospace and industrial spherical bearing applications.

Promoted-Ignition Testing to Determine the Gaseous Oxygen Compatibility of the Intermetallic Compound 60-NITINOL

The flammability of 60-NITINOL (60 weight percentage Ni and 40 weight percentage Ti) in an oxygen-rich atmosphere is assessed. It is determined that 60-NITINOL burns readily in gaseous oxygen and would not be a good candidate for components exposed to oxygen-rich environments where there may be an ignition source. The results are the same whether the material is tested without heat treatment, after a solution treatment or after furnace annealing. These results provide guidance for materials selection of aerospace turbomachinery components.

Strain‐Enhanced Metallic Intermixing in Shape‐Controlled Multilayered Core–Shell Nanostructures: Toward Shaped Intermetallics

Abstract Controlling the surface composition of shaped bimetallic nanoparticles could offer precise tunability of geometric and electronic surface structure for new nanocatalysts. To achieve this goal, a platform for studying the intermixing process in a shaped nanoparticle was designed, using multilayered Pd‐Ni‐Pt core–shell nanocubes as precursors. Under mild conditions, the intermixing between Ni and Pt could be tuned by changing layer thickness and number, triggering intermixing while preserving nanoparticle shape. Intermixing of the two metals is monitored using transmission electron microscopy. The surface structure evolution is characterized using electrochemical methanol oxidation. DFT calculations suggest that the low‐temperature mixing is enhanced by shorter diffusion lengths and strain introduced by the layered structure. The platform and insights presented are an advance toward the realization of shape‐controlled multimetallic nanoparticles tailored to each potential application.

Ligand-Guided Growth of Alloyed Shells on Intermetallic Seeds as a Route toward Multimetallic Nanocatalysts with Shape-Control

In this work, shape-controlled core@shell PdCu@PtCu nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by seed-mediated co-reduction. Specifically, cubic-shaped NPs were achieved by selecting tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB) and triphenylphosphine (TPP) as capping ligands. Their roles were investigated by incorporating independently each ligand into the reaction and analyzing the products by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This analysis revealed that the quasi-spherical PdCu seeds acquired cubic shapes during the synthesis and directed shell deposition. This process was mediated by TPP, which was central to achieving monodisperse NPs with shape-control. The synthesis conditions were modified to tune both the thickness and composition of the shells. Evaluation of the NPs as catalysts for the electrooxidation of formic acid found that the NPs with the thinnest Pt-rich shells gave the highest specific activity, with the nanocubic shape also enhancing performance with respect to the spherical counterpart. These results highlight the benefits of integrating compositional, architectural, and shape-control all in one NP construct.

Non-compact oxide-island growth induced by surface phase transition of the intermetallic NiAl during vacuum annealing

Crystal structure and composition are inter-dependent and decoupling their effects on surface reactivity is challenging. Using low-energy electron microscopy to spatially and temporally resolve the oxide film growth during the oxidation of NiAl(100), we differentiate such coupled effects by monitoring oxide growth while simultaneously fine-tuning the surface structure and composition during oxidation. We demonstrate that the oxidation of chemically ordered surfaces results in compact oxide island growth whereas non-compact oxide growth during the surface phase transition. By incorporating the surface phase transition induced chemical disordering into kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we illustrate that the non-compact oxide growth is induced by the composition effect on the surface diffusion of oxygen, which can be described by the concept of “ant in the labyrinth”.

Electronic structure, magnetic properties, and exchange splitting of gadolinium intermetallics

Here, we report here the electronic structure calculations of the magnetic moment, magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), and density of states (DOS) of Gd-metal, GdAl 2 , GdAl 3 , GdCo 2 , GdCo 3 , and GdCo 5 . From the DOS, the exchange splitting energy is derived to map ferrimagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition (Curie temperature, T C ). The employed theoretical method here is based on advanced density functional theory, specifically the linearized augmented plane wave method (LAPW) within the local spin density approximation (LSDA), including spin–orbit coupling (SOC) and Hubbard model parameter (U). DOS analysis of both Gd-Al and Gd-Co systems reveals a strong correlation between exchange splitting energy and T C . The Gd-Co system exhibits an enormous exchange splitting energy among Co-3d electrons, vastly overwhelming the vanishing Gd 5d exchange splitting. Finally, these findings suggest that exchange splitting of Co-3d electrons plays a key role in the ground state magnetism and magnetic transition temperatures in these materials.
