Instructional image processing on a university mainframe: The Kansas system

An interactive digital image processing program package was developed that runs on the University of Kansas central computer, a Honeywell Level 66 multi-processor system. The module form of the package allows easy and rapid upgrades and extensions of the system and is used in remote sensing courses in the Department of Geography, in regional five-day short courses for academics and professionals, and also in remote sensing projects and research. The package comprises three self-contained modules of processing functions: Subimage extraction and rectification; image enhancement, preprocessing and data reduction; and classification. Its use in a typical course setting is described. Availability and costs are considered.

Digital image data sets for remote sensing instruction

Several sets of LANDSAT image segments and a set of simple image processing programs operating in batch mode are being used to teach an introductory course in digital image analysis and classification. The image data sets contain only a small number of pixels and can be run quickly on most university computing systems. A number of image data sets derived from the raw spectral bands (smoothed data sets, band ratios and texture data sets) allows the student to examine and include these extracted variables in the classification process. Another data set consists of three registered LANDSAT image segments for three different dates so that the student may experiment with multitemporal data processing. The three LANDSAT scenes used in the class are described and the image data sets available for class exercises are listed.

The Remote Analysis Station (RAS) as an instructional system

"Hands-on" training in LANDSAT data analysis techniques can be obtained using a desk-top, interactive remote analysis station (RAS) which consists of a color CRT imagery display, with alphanumeric overwrite and keyboard, as well as a cursor controller and modem. This portable station can communicate via modem and dial-up telephone with a host computer at 1200 baud or it can be hardwired to a host computer at 9600 baud. A Z80 microcomputer controls the display refresh memory and remote station processing. LANDSAT data is displayed as three-band false-color imagery, one-band color-sliced imagery, or color-coded processed imagery. Although the display memory routinely operates at 256 x 256 picture elements, a display resolution of 128 x 128 can be selected to fill the display faster. In the false color mode the computer packs the data into one 8-bit character. When the host is not sending pictorial information the characters sent are in ordinary ASCII code. System capabilities are described.

Laser-photodetector timing station instruction and maintenance manual

A laser photodetector station is used for detecting the arrival of a projectile at a specific point along a ballistic range. The system can be employed on either an open or evacuated range, with small projectiles, and at hypervelocities. The setup procedures, maintenance, and system components are described.

Instructions to working groups

The key to the success of this workshop is your active participation in the working group process. The goals of this workshop are to address four major questions regarding Cockpit Resource Management (CRM) Training. To some extent the working group topic areas parallel these issues, but in some cases they do not. However, it is important for all of the working groups to keep these general questions in mind during their deliberations: (1) What are the essential elements of an optimal CRM Training program; (2) What are the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches to CRM Training; (3) How can CRM Training best be implemented, and what barriers exist; and (4) Is CRM Training effective, do we know, and if not, how can we find out.

Instruction manual for UTEP weld gas hydrogen detector

The instrument described in this manual was developed at the University of Texas at El Paso under contract from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Marshall Space Flight Center. The instrument has been used to detect hydrogen in the shielding gas of Variable Polarity Plasma Arc (VPPA) welds at concentrations of less than 100 ppm. The instrument makes measurements in real time during the welding operation and provides the operator with an easily readable graphic display of the present level of hydrogen in the arc as well as the level of hydrogen over the past approximately five minutes. In this way the welder can not only tell if the present level of hydrogen is excessive, but can see what changes in weld parameters have done to the level of hydrogen. The welder can set the level of hydrogen that is considered critical and the instrument display will indicate when that level has been exceeded. All detection is from the torch side. All needed equipment is supplied by the developer except for an IBM PC compatible computer which must be supplied by the user. Source code is supplied in this manual so that the user can modify the control program as desired.

The mysterious atmosphere of the Earth. ATLAS: Instruction guide with activities

This teacher's guide presents lesson plans addressing various aspects of atmospheric physics and chemistry; the interactions between land, air, and sea; air pollution; and the mechanisms of climate change. The science concepts in this guide have been designed to complement the middle school curriculum. However, many activities can be used with younger or older students.

A preliminary empirical evaluation of virtual reality as an instructional medium for visual-spatial tasks

We explored the training potential of Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Thirty-one adults were trained and tested on spatial skills in a VR. They learned a sequence of button and knob responses on a VR console and performed flawlessly on the same console. Half were trained with a rote strategy; the rest used a meaningful strategy. Response times were equivalent for both groups and decreased significantly over five test trials indicating that learning continued on VR tests. The same subjects practiced navigating through a VR building, which had three floors with four rooms on each floor. The dependent measure was the number of rooms traversed on routes that differed from training routes. Many subjects completed tests in the fewest rooms possible. All subjects learned configurational knowledge according to the criterion of taking paths that were significantly shorter than those predicted by a random walk as determined by a Monte Carlo analysis. The results were discussed as a departure point for empirically testing the training potential of VR technology.

Efficient instruction sequencing with Inline Target Insertion

Inline target insertion, a specific compiler and pipeline implementation method for delayed branches with squashing, is defined. The method is shown to offer two important features not discovered in previous studies. First, branches inserted into branch slots are correctly executed. Second, the execution returns correctly from interrupts or exceptions with only one program counter. These two features result in better performance and less software/hardware complexity than conventional delayed branching mechanisms.

Evaluation of computer-aided instruction techniques for the crew interface coordination position

The Crew Interface Coordinator (CIC) is responsible for real-time voice and procedural communication between the payload crew on the orbiter and the payload operations team on the ground. This function is dedicated to science activities and operations, and may also include some responsibilities for crew training. CIC training at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) consists of mission-independent training, mission simulations, and line-organization training. As identified by Schneider, the program provides very good generic training; however position-specific training may be obtained in a very unstructured way. A computer-based training system, identified as Mac CIC, is currently under development to address this issue. Mac CIC is intended to provide an intermediate level of training in order to prepare the CIC for the more intensive mission simulations. Although originally intended as an intelligent tutoring system, Mac CIC currently exists as a hypertext-based application. The objectives of this research is to evaluate the current system and to provide both recommendations and a detailed plan for Mac CIC's evolution into an intelligent tutoring system.

BUCKY instruction manual, version 3.3

The computer program BUCKY is a p-version finite element package for the solution of structural problems. The current version of BUCKY solves the 2-D plane stress, 3-D plane stress plasticity, 3-D axisymmetric, Mindlin and Kirchoff plate bending, and buckling problems. The p-version of the finite element method is a highly accurate version of the traditional finite element method. Example cases are presented to show the accuracy and application of BUCKY.
