Neat and rapid preparation of hydrophobic magnetic ionic liquids composed of transition metal chelates featuring in situ formation capabilities in aqueous matrices
Nitrogen and oxygen-donor ligands comprised of alkylimidazoles, tertiary amides, and diglycolamides were employed to form transition metal chelates in the preparation of twelve magnetic ionic liquids. Viscosities as low as 198 cP were achieved.
Impacts of molecular architecture on the radiation-induced degradation and reaction kinetics of hydrophobic diglycolamides with the solvated electron and the dodecane radical cation
Given their proposed use as trivalent actinide–lanthanide separation ligands, the role of molecular architecture on the radiation robustness of diglycolamide (DGA) molecules has been investigated. This study examined three prototypical molecules with differences in their aliphatic chain architecture: N,N,N′,N′-tetra(n-octyl)diglycolamide (TODGA), N,N,N′,N′-tetra(2-ethylhexyl)diglycolamide (T2EHDGA), and N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-dioctyldiglycolamide (DMDODGA). Rate coefficients and activation parameters are reported for the reactivity of each DGA with the solvated electron (e solv − ) and the corresponding dodecane radical cation (RH˙ + ) over the temperature range of 10.0 to 44.1 °C. These measurements indicate that DMDODGA is the most chemically reactive with both transient radicals, which may be attributed to this molecule's more accessible backbone. Complementary gamma dose accumulation studies (≤ 600 kGy) under envisioned process conditions—50 mM DGA in n-dodecane solvent—afforded dose constants for the loss of DGA of d = (3.41 ± 0.07) × 10 −3 , (4.19 ± 0.09) × 10 −3 , and (4.65 ± 0.09) × 10 −3 kGy −1 for T2EHDGA, DMDODGA, and TODGA, respectively. These dose constants indicate that varying DGA architecture affords subtle differences in chemical reactivity, leading to varying rates of radiolytic degradation under envisioned actinide–lanthanide separation conditions. However, more ambitious DGA frameworks, such as modifying the backbone, branching of the aliphatic chains, and/or changing the size of the chain may be required for larger gains in radiolytic longevity while optimizing actinide–lanthanide selectivity.
Effects of de-fluorination on hydrophobicity and on CO 2 and CH 4 adsorption under high humidity in MeMOFs, methylated analogues of FMOFs
Superhydrophobicity of MeMOFs, methylated analogues of FMOFs (CF 3 → CH 3 ) is predicted by GCMC simulations (high-RH CO 2 or CH 4 adsorption in MeMOFs > FMOFs) validated experimentally (H 2 O contact angle ∼172° for MeMOF@plastic dry-coated substrates).
Mineral-associated organic matter is heterogeneous and structured by hydrophobic, charged, and polar interactions
The formation of mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) is a key phenomenon that may explain the slow turnover rates of carbon in soil organic matter (SOM). Despite this, important details pertaining to the structure and dynamics of MAOM remain unknown. In the present study, we use replica-exchange molecular dynamics simulations to gain insight into the structure of MAOM on the surface of prototypical phyllosilicate clay and Fe-oxide minerals, montmorillonite and goethite, fine-grained minerals that strongly impact soil carbon dynamics in temperate and tropical regions, respectively. We examine the impact of aqueous chemistry through the presence of either Na + or Ca 2 + charge balancing counterions. Our results are consistent with the hypothesized multilayer sorption (“onion-skin”) model of MAOM and help to explain previous observations regarding the patchy distribution of SOM on mineral surfaces. In particular, the SOM coatings are partial and laterally heterogeneous, and water retains extensive access to mineral surfaces even when significant SOM sorption occurs. Low molecular weight neutral SOM molecules ( < 200 Da) infrequently interact with the mineral surfaces nor their sorbed organic matter coatings and are increasingly labile with decreasing molecular weight. This observation is inconsistent with a central feature of the predominant soil continuum model of SOM and suggests that further iterations of the conceptual model may be required.
Spectral Similarity Masks Structural Diversity at Hydrophobic Water Interfaces
The air-water and graphene-water interfaces represent quintessential examples of the liquid-gas and liquid-solid boundaries, respectively. While the sum-frequency generation (SFG) spectra of these interfaces show similarities, a consensus on their signals and interpretations has yet to be reached. Leveraging deep learning, we computed first-principles SFG spectra for both systems, addressing experimental discrepancies. Here, our findings reveal that similarities in SFG signals do not translate into comparable interfacial microscopic properties. Instead, graphene-water and air-water interfaces exhibit fundamental differences in SFG-active thicknesses, hydrogen-bonding networks, and surface dynamics. These distinctions underscore roughness suppression and electronic interactions present at the solid-liquid interface but absent at the gas-liquid interface.

Hydrophobic Porous Material Adsorbs Small Organic Molecules
Composite molecular-sieve material has pore structure designed specifically for preferential adsorption of organic molecules for sizes ranging from 3 to 6 angstrom. Design based on principle that contaminant molecules become strongly bound to surface of adsorbent when size of contaminant molecules is nearly same as that of pores in adsorbent. Material used to remove small organic contaminant molecules from vacuum systems or from enclosed gaseous environments like closed-loop life-support systems.
Hydrophobic Catalysts For Removal Of NOx From Flue Gases
Improved catalysts for removal of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2) from combustion flue gases formulated as composites of vanadium pentoxide in carbon molecular sieves. Promotes highly efficient selective catalytic reduction of NOx at relatively low temperatures while not being adversely affected by presence of water vapor and sulfur oxide gases in flue gas. Apparatus utilizing catalyst of this type easily integrated into exhaust stream of power plant to remove nitrogen oxides, generated in combustion of fossil fuels and contribute to formation of acid rain and photochemical smog.
