Reduced reactivity to air on HF-treated YBa2Cu3O(7-x)surfaces

Treatment of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) films with a nonaqueous solution of HF in absolute ethanol results in the formation of an oxyfluoride with relative Y:Ba:Cu concentrations of 1:4:3 on the surface, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The passivation properties of chemically treated films were tested by monitoring the growth of the high binding energy O 1s peak, associated with nonsuperconducting surface species, as a function of air exposure time, for both HF-treated and untreated films. The native oxyfluoride is shown to reduce the reactivity of the superconductor to air.

HF Doppler and VHF radar observations of upper atmospheric disturbances caused by weak cold front during winter time

The simultaneous use of the Taiwan VHF radar and the HF Doppler sounder for remote measurement of three-dimensional winds, gravity waves, and density perturbations at mesospheric and thermospheric heights is demonstrated. A special event of atmospheric disturbances caused by propagating gravity waves excited by weak convective motions in winter time were investigated. The three-dimensional wind velocities at different heights were determined, and the frequency, horizontal wavelength, vertical wavelength, and phase velocity of the gravity waves were measured. The subtropical, low-latitude site makes the VHF radar and HF Doppler array systems unique, and the observations especially valuable for space projects dealing with low-latitude atmosphere.

Parametric excitation of whistler waves by HF heater

Possible generation of whistler waves by Tromso HF heater is investigated. It is shown that the HF heater wave can parametrically decay into a whistler wave and a Langmuir wave. Since whistler waves may have a broad range of frequency, the simultaneously excited Langmuir waves can have a much broader frequency bandwidth than those excited by the parametric decay instability.

Intensity modulation of HF heater-induced plasma lines

The Arecibo HF heater is normally composed of two separate sets of antenna array, transmitting waves vertically at the same frequency and polarization. However, when these two sets of antenna array radiate at slightly different frequencies, the intensities of HF heater-induced plasma lines (HFPLs) can be drastically modulated. In recent Duncan et al.'s (1989) experiments the 100 percent intensity modulation of HFPLs was seen to persist even when the secondary set of antenna array radiated at a few percent of the power transmitted by the primary set of antenna array. An explanation is offered, and it is shown that there exists a minimum power, Pmin, and if the secondary set of antenna array radiates at a power lower than Pmin, the 100-percent intensity modulation of HFPLs will not be observed. The functional dependence of Pmin on the difference frequency of the two sets of antenna array is also predicted for future experiments to corroborate.

Heterogeneous conversion of COF2 to HF in polar stratospheric clouds

It is argued that the reaction COF2 + H2O - 2HF + CO2 should proceed on surfaces of polar stratospheric clouds, based on laboratory evidence for this reaction in condensed phase and on analysis of column observations of HF during the Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition. If the hypothesis is confirmed, observations of COF2 and HF could provide unambiguous indication of heterogeneous processing of polar air, and could help elucidate the influence of heterogeneous chemistry on concentrations of HCl, ClNO3, and chlorine oxide radicals.

Theoretical study of polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of Ne, HF, F(-), and OH(-)

Theoretical calculations are presented for the polarizability parameters through the fourth power of an applied static electric field for Ne and HF and through the second power in the field for the negative ions F(-) and OH(-). Large Gaussian basis sets are employed and electron correlation is incorporated using the modified coupled pair functional (MCPF) method and for Ne and HF using coupled-cluster single- and double-excitation (CCSD) methods with two approaches of including the effect of triple excitations. The MCPF method is found to perform well in relation to the more rigorous CCSD method.

A theoretical model for the temporal evolution of HF-enhanced plasma lines

The HF-enhanced plasma lines (HFPLs) observed in the Arecibo heating experiments refer to the radar returns at frequencies near the sum and difference of the radar frequency and the HF-heatear frequency. Those enhanced spectral lines are caused by backscatter of radar signals from parametrically excited plasma waves having a wavenumber of 18 n. A nonlinear theory was developed to describe the temporal evolution of those specified plasma waves and their originating altitude interval of HFPLs observed at Arecibo, Puerto Rico are explained. The theoretical resultsagree well with the observation (Djuth and Sulzer, 1989).

Thermomechanical and bithermal fatigue behavior of cast B1900 + Hf and wrought Haynes 188

High temperature thermomechanical and bithermal fatigue behavior was investigated for two superalloys: cast nickel-base B1900+Hf and wrought cobalt-base Haynes 188. Experimental results were generated to support development of an advanced thermal fatigue life prediction method. Strain controlled thermomechanical and load-controlled, strain-limited, bithermal fatigue tests were used to determine the fatigue crack initiation and cyclic stress-strain response characteristics of superalloys. Bithermal temperatures of 483 and 871 C were used for B1900+Hf, and 316 and 760 C for Haynes 188. Thermomechanical fatigue tests were conducted by using maximum and minimum temperatures corresponding to those for the bithermal experiments. Lives cover the range from about 10 to 3000 cycles to failure. Isothermal fatigue results obtained previously are also discussed.

Influence of a magnetic field during directional solidification of MAR-M 246 + Hf superalloy

An area that has been almost totally overlooked in the optimization of properties in directionally solidified superalloys is the control of microstructural features through the application of a magnetic field during solidification. The influence of a magnetic field on the microstructural features of a nickel-base superalloys is investigated. Studies were performed on the dendritic MAR-M 246+Hf alloy, which was solidified under both a 5 K gauss magnetic field and under no-applied-field conditions. The possible influences of the magnetic field on the solidification process were observed by studying variations in microstructural features including volume fraction, surface area, number, and shape of the carbide particles. Stereological factors analyzed also included primary and secondary dendrite arm spacing and the volume fraction of the interdendritic eutectic constituent. Microprobe analysis was performed to determine the chemistry of the carbides, dendrites, and interdendritic constituents, and how it varied between field and no-field solidification samples. Experiments involving periodic application and removal of the magnetic field were also performed in order to permit a comparison with structural variations observed in a MAR-M 246+Hf alloy solidified during KC-135 high-g, low-g maneuvers.

Temporal evolution of HF-enhanced plasma lines

A theoretical investigation is conducted of the temporal evolution of HF-enhanced plasma lines (HFPLs). An extended theoretical model is presented which was originally intended to explain the intensity overshoot of the high frequency enhanced plasma line (HFPL). The extension takes into consideration the fact that nonresistant heating of plasma electrons by the parametrically excited Langmuir waves can yield an apparent increment in electron temperature. It is pointed out that the HFPLs refer to the radar echoes at frequencies near the sum and difference of the radar frequency and the HF heater wave frequency. It is suggested that backscatter of radar signals from plasma waves having a wavenumber of 18/m cause the enhanced spectral lines.

Stratospheric ClONO2, HCl, and HF concentration profiles derived from Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy experiment Spacelab 3 observations - An update

Results are presented on a reanalysis and reinterpretation of solar IR absorption spectra obtained during April-May 1985 observations by the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy instrument aboard Spacelab 3. Results yield updated volume mixing ratio profiles of ClONO2, HCl, and HF. It is shown that the updated HCl and HF results reflect changes below 30 km due to the use of smaller pressure-broadened half-widths, and that the changes in updated ClONO2 profiles are a consequence of adopting improved sets of line parameters. The new ClONO2 have an accuracy of + or - 20 percent.

Radiative transition probabilities for all vibrational levels in the X 1Sigma(+) state of HF

Recent analyses have led to an experimentally-based potential energy curve for the ground state of HF which includes nonadiabatic corrections and which joins smoothly to the long-range potential at an accurately determined dissociation limit. Using this potential curve and a new ab initio dipole moment function, accurate radiative transition probabilities among all vibrational levels of the ground state of HF have been calculated for selected rotational quantum numbers. Comparisons of Einstein A spontaneous emission coefficients, dipole moment absorption matrix elements, and Herman-Wallis factors for absorption bands are presented.

A source mechanism producing HF-induced plasma lines (HFPLS) with up-shifted frequencies

Attention is given to a nonlinear scattering process analyzed as a source mechanism producing the frequency up-shifted HFPLs observed in the Arecibo ionospheric heating experiments. A physical picture is offered to explain how Langmuir waves with frequencies greater than the HF heater wave frequency can be produced in the heating experiments and be detected by incoherent radars as frequency up-shifted HFPLs. Since the considered scattering process occurs in a region near the reflection height, it explains why the frequency up-shifted HFPLs should originate from the altitude near the reflection height as observed. The theory also shows that the amount of frequency up-shift is inversely proportional to the frequency of the HF heater and increases linearly with the electron temperature. The quantitative analysis of the theory shows a good agreement with the experimental results.

Concerted hydrogen atom exchange between three HF molecules

The termolecular reaction involving concerted hydrogen-atom exchange between three HF molecules was investigated with particular attention given to the effects of correlation at the various stationary points along the reaction. Using large segmented Gaussian basis sets to locate the (HF)3 stationary points at the SCF level, the geometries of the stable hydrogen-bonded trimer, which is of C(3h) symmetry, were located, together with the transition state for hydrogen exchange, which is of D(3h) symmetry. Then, using a large atomic natural orbital basis and correlating all valence electrons, the energetics of the exchange reaction were evaluated at the correlated level.

Thermomechanical and bithermal fatigue behavior of cast B1900 + Hf and wrought Haynes 188

A thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) high-temperature life prediction method has been evaluated using the experimental data. Bithermal fatigue (BTF), bithermal creep-fatigue (BTC-F), and TMF experiments were performed using two aerospace structural alloys, cast B1900 + Hf and wrought Haynes 188. The method which is based on the total strain version of strain range partitioning and unified cyclic constitutive modeling requires, as an input, information on the flow and failure behavior of the material of interest. Bithermal temperatures of 483 and 871 C were used for the cast B1900 + Hf nickel-base alloy and 316 and 760 C for the wrought Haynes 188 cobalt-base alloy. Maximum and minimum temperatures were also used in both TMF and BTF tests. Comparisons were made between the results of these tests and isothermal tensile and fatigue test data obtained previously. Qualitative correlations were observed between tensile and isothermal fatigue tests.

Concerted hydrogen atom exchange between three HF molecules

We have investigated the termolecular reaction involving concerted hydrogen exchange between three HF molecules, with particular emphasis on the effects of correlation at the various stationary points along the reaction. Using an extended basis, we have located the geometries of the stable hydrogen-bonded trimer, which is of C(sub 3h) symmetry, and the transition state for hydrogen exchange, which is of D(sub 3h) symmetry. The energies of the exchange reation were then evaluated at the correlated level, using a large atomic natural orbital basis and correlating all valence electrons. Several correlation treatments were used, namely, configration interaction with single and double excitations, coupled-pair functional, and coupled-cluster methods. We are thus able to measure the effect of accounting for size-extensivity. Zero-point corrections to the correlated level energetics were determined using analytic second derivative techniques at the SCF level. Our best calculations, which include the effects of connected triple excitations in the coupled-cluster procedure, indicate that the trimer is bound by 9 +/- 1 kcal/mol relative to three separate monomers, in excellent agreement with previous estimates. The barrier to concerted hydrogen exchange is 15 kcal/mol above the trimer, or only 4.7 kcal/mol above three separated monomers. Thus the barrier to hydrogen exchange between HF molecules via this termolecular process is very low.

Terrestrial bitumen analogue of orgueil organic material demonstrates high sensitivity to usual HF-HCl treatment

The relationship between the chemical composition and the interlayer spacing (d002) of organic materials (OM's) is known for various terrestrial OM's. We improved this general trend by correlation with corresponding trend of natural solid bitumens (asphaltite-kerite-anthraxolite) up to graphite. Using the improved trend we identified bitumen analogs of carbonaceous chondrite OM's residued after HF-HCl treatment. Our laboratory experiment revealed that these analogs and, hence, structure and chemical composition of carbonaceous chondrite OM's are very sensitive to the HF-HCl treatment. So, usual extraction of OM from carbonaceous chondrites may change significantly structural and chemical composition of extracted OM.

Development of Creep-Resistant NiAl(Ti,Hf) Single-Crystal Alloys

Nickel-base superalloys are the current choice for high-temperature jet engine applications such as turbine blades and vanes. However, after more than five decades of use, nickel-base superalloys have reached their limit, since the operating temperatures in gas turbine engines are now approaching the melting temperature of these alloys. Thus alternative materials, such as lightweight NiAl intermetallic alloys with superior properties, (e.g., high melting temperature, high thermal conductivity, and excellent chemical stability and oxidation resistance) are required for the next generation of high-temperature structural materials for more efficient 21st century civil transport systems. The two major disadvantages that have historically prevented the application of NiAl as a high-temperature structural material are its poor creep resistance and low room-temperature ductility. Alloying strategies similar to those used for nickel-base superalloys are being used to improve the high-temperature strength via solid-solution and precipitate-hardening effects. This study highlights the potent role of Ti and Hf as potential solid-solution strengtheners in NiAl and also the added effect of second-phase particles when Ti and Hf are both used.
