Quantum Algorithms

This thesis describes several new quantum algorithms. These include a polynomial time algorithm that uses a quantum fast Fourier transform to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a Hamiltonian operator, and that can be applied in cases for which all know classical algorithms require exponential time.

The Submillimeter-Wave Spectrum of Isotopic Methyl Cyanide

The laboratory submillimeter-wave rotational spectrum of the 13 CH 3 CN, CH 3 13 CN, and the CH 3 C 15 N isotopomers of methyl cyanide has been observed in natural abundance in the 294 to 607 GHz region. The maximum J and K values are 34 an 14, respectively. Fifteen additional CH 3 CN transitions up to K=21 were also measured. The transitions of all four species are fitted to a symmetric top Hamiltonian and the rotation and distortion constants are determined. The 14 N quadropole and spin rotation are also calculated and presented. Suggested values for many other parameters which could not be directly determined from the isotope spectra are calculated from the normal species values and isotope relationships. The determined and calculated constants should predict the spectrum of the three isotopomers to well over 1 THz accurately enough for astronomical assignments.

Utilizing Experimental-based Line Positions for Semi-empirical IR Line Lists

Molecular IR line lists computed from semi-empirically refined ab initio potential energy surface and high quality ab initio dipole moment surface may have line position accuracy typically within 0.01 - 0.05 cm−1. For high resolution spectroscopy databases, it is necessary to integrate the computed theoretical IR intensities with the line positions accurately determined from experiments and (or) reliably derived from Effective Hamiltonian models. However, it is not a trivial task, and the choices in reality are heavily contingent upon the coverage, consistency, and accuracy of the data available for a specific molecule or isotopologue. We will present several approaches applied to recent Ames IR line lists of CO 2 1, N 2 O 2 , and OCS to demonstrate how challenging such integration may become, and what we have learned From these projects. Discussions will focus on the relation between each different scenario and the corresponding choice or solution, including their advantages and limits, how the semi-empirical IR line lists can help, and what else may be needed for future improvements. We will emphasize that the “Theory+Experiment” synergy may still play significant role in the determination of the best line positions.

Research in the Restricted Problems of Three and Four Bodies Final Scientific Report

Seven studies have been conducted on research in the existence and nature of solutions of the restricted problems of three and four bodies. The details and results of five of these research investigations have already been published, and the latest two studies will be published shortly. A complete bibliography of publications is included in this report. This research has been primarily qualitative and has yielded new information on the behavior of trajectories near the libration points in the Earth-Moon-Sun and Sun-Jupiter-Saturn systems, and on the existence of periodic trajectories about the libration points of the circular and elliptical restricted four-body models. We have also implemented Birkhoff's normalization process for conservative and nonconservative Hamiltonian systems with equilibrium points. This makes available a technique for analyzing stability properties of certain nonlinear dynamical systems, and we have applied this technique to the circular and elliptical restricted three-body models. A related study was also conducted to determine the feasibility of using cislunar periodic trajectories for various space missions. Preliminary results suggest that this concept is attractive for space flight safety operations in cislunar space. Results of this research will be of interest to mathematicians, particularly those working in ordinary differential equations, dynamical systems and celestial mechanics; to astronomers; and to space guidance and mission analysts.
