Incommensurate magnetic orders and topological Hall effect in the square-net centrosymmetric EuGa 2 Al 2 system

Neutron diffraction on the centrosymmetric square-net magnet EuGa 2 Al 2 reveals multiple incommensurate magnetic states (AFM1, 2, 3) in zero field. In applied field, a new magnetic phase (A) is identified from magnetization and transport measurements, bounded by two of the μ 0 H=0 incommensurate magnetic phases (AFM1, helical, and AFM3, cycloidal) with different moment orientations. Moreover, magnetotransport measurements indicate the presence of a topological Hall effect, with maximum values centered in the A phase. Together, these results render EuGa 2 Al 2 a material with noncoplanar or topological spin texture in applied field. X-ray diffraction reveals an out-of-plane (OOP) charge density wave (CDW) below T CDW ~50 K while the magnetic propagation vector lies in plane below T N =19.5 K. Together these data point to a new route to realizing in-plane noncollinear spin textures through an OOP CDW. In turn, these noncollinear spin textures may be unstable against the formation of topological spin textures in an applied field.

Quantum Hall effect in a Weyl-Hubbard model: Interplay between topology and correlation

The interplay between topology and electronic correlations offer a rich avenue for discovering emergent quantum phenomena in condensed matter systems. Here, in this work, starting from the Weyl-Hubbard model, we investigate the quantum Hall effect to explore the consequence of onsite Hubbard repulsion on nontrivial Weyl band topology in the presence of an external magnetic field. Within the Gutzwiller projected wavefunction method, we find the system to undergo multiple topological phase transitions by tuning on-site Coulomb interaction, including two distinct Weyl phases with different numbers of Weyl node pairs and a trivial narrow band insulator. Crucially, these two Weyl phases may be identified by the sign of their chiral Landau levels. The possible experimental signature of these topological phases and correlation effects is provided by the magnetic-field dependent quantum Hall conductivity within the Kubo response theory.

Alloying vanadium in Mn Bi 2 Te 4 for robust ferromagnetic coupling and quantum anomalous Hall effect

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer coupling in the two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 places a restriction on realizing a stable quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) [Y. Deng et al., Science 367, 895 (2020)]. Through density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate the possibility of tuning the AFM coupling to the ferromagnetic coupling in Mn Bi 2 Te 4 films by alloying about 50% V with Mn. As a result, the QAHE can be achieved without alternation with the even or odd septuple layers. This provides a practical strategy to get a robust QAHE in ultrathin Mn Bi 2 Te 4 films, rendering them attractive for technological innovations.

Observation of anomalous thermal Hall effect in a Kagome superconductor

Broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in superconductors can induce not only spontaneous magnetization by the finite angular momentum of Cooper pairs but also the anomalous thermal Hall effects (ATHEs), whose detection has been extremely challenging. Here, we report the successful observation of an ATHE developing below the superconducting transition temperature at zero magnetic field in the kagome-lattice superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 . This finding is verified by the absence of a signal in a conventional type-II superconductor using the same setup and by ruling out the trapped-vortex effects through micro-Hall array measurements. Both the temperature dependence and the magnitude of the observed anomalous thermal Hall conductivity are quite different from those expected for the quantized thermal edge current of an intrinsic ATHE but consistent with extrinsic impurity-induced ATHEs in chiral superconductivity. Our study of ATHE offers an alternative approach to probe TRS breaking in the superconducting states.

Anomalous Hall effects in chiral superconductors

We report theoretical results for the electronic contribution to thermal and electrical transport for chiral superconductors belonging to even or odd-parity E 1 and E 2 representations of the tetragonal and hexagonal point groups. Chiral superconductors exhibit novel properties that depend on the topology of the order parameter and Fermi surface, and—as we highlight—the structure of the impurity potential. An anomalous thermal Hall effect is predicted and shown to be sensitive to the winding number, ν, of the chiral order parameter via Andreev scattering that transfers angular momentum from the chiral condensate to excitations that scatter off the random potential. For heat transport in a chiral superconductor with isotropic impurity scattering, i.e., point-like impurities, a transverse heat current is obtained for ν = ± 1, but vanishes for | ν | > 1. This is not a universal result. For finite-size impurities with radii of order or greater than the Fermi wavelength, R ≥ ℏ / p f, the thermal Hall conductivity is finite for chiral order with | ν | ≥ 2, and determined by a specific Fermi-surface average of the differential cross-section for electron-impurity scattering. Our results also provide quantitative formulae for analyzing and interpreting thermal transport measurements for superconductors predicted to exhibit broken time-reversal and mirror symmetries.

Unconventional nonlinear Hall effects in twisted multilayer 2D materials

We present the first investigation of unusual nonlinear Hall effects in twisted multilayer 2D materials. Contrary to expectations, our study shows that these nonlinear effects are not merely extensions of their monolayer counterparts. Instead, we find that stacking order and pairwise interactions between neighboring layers, mediated by Berry curvatures, play a pivotal role in shaping their collective nonlinear optical response. By combining large-scale Real-Time Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (RT-TDDFT) simulations with model Hamiltonian analyses, we demonstrate a remarkable second-harmonic transverse response in hexagonal boron nitride four-layers, even in cases where the total Berry curvature cancels out. Furthermore, our symmetry analysis of the layered structures provides a simplified framework for predicting nonlinear responses in multilayer materials in general. Our investigation challenges the prevailing understanding of nonlinear optical responses in layered materials and opens new avenues for the design and development of advanced materials with tailored optical properties.

Compact High Current Rare-Earth Emitter Hollow Cathode for Hall Effect Thrusters

An apparatus and method for achieving an efficient central cathode in a Hall effect thruster is disclosed. A hollow insert disposed inside the end of a hollow conductive cathode comprises a rare-earth element and energized to emit electrons from an inner surface. The cathode employs an end opening having an area at least as large as the internal cross sectional area of the rare earth insert to enhance throughput from the cathode end. In addition, the cathode employs a high aspect ratio geometry based on the cathode length to width which mitigates heat transfer from the end. A gas flow through the cathode and insert may be impinged by the emitted electrons to yield a plasma. One or more optional auxiliary gas feeds may also be employed between the cathode and keeper wall and external to the keeper near the outlet.

Anomalous Hall effect in the weak-itinerant ferrimagnet FeCr 2 Te 4

In this study, we carried out a comprehensive study of electronic transport, thermal, and thermodynamic properties in Fe Cr 2 Te 4 single crystals. It exhibits bad-metallic behavior and anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below a weak-itinerant paramagnetic-to-ferrimagnetic transition T c ~ 123 K. The linear scaling between the anomalous Hall resistivity ρ x y and the longitudinal resistivity ρ x x implies that the AHE in Fe Cr 2 Te 4 is most likely dominated by an extrinsic skew-scattering mechanism rather than an intrinsic KL or an extrinsic side-jump mechanism, which is supported by our Berry phase calculations.

Thermal Hall effect in a van der Waals triangular magnet FeCL 2

Thermal transport is a pivotal probe for studying low-energy, charge-neutral quasiparticles in insulating magnets. In this Letter, we report an observation of large magnetothermal conductivity and thermal Hall effect (THE) in a van der Waals antiferromagnet FeCl 2 . The magnetothermal conductivity reaches over ~700%, indicating strong magnon-phonon coupling. Furthermore, we find an appreciable thermal Hall signal which changes sign concurrently with the spin-flip transition from the antiferromagnetic state to the polarized ferromagnetic state. Our theoretical calculations suggest that, in addition to the Berry curvature induced at the anticrossing points of the hybridized magnon and acoustic phonon modes of FeCl 2 , other mechanisms are needed to account for the magnitude of the observed THE.

Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in an Insulating van der Waals Magnet

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have been a fertile playground for the discovery and exploration of physical phenomena and new physics. In this Letter, we report the observation of an anomalous thermal Hall effect (THE) with κ xy ~ 1 × 10 -2 WK -1 m -1 in an insulating van der Waals ferromagnet VI 3 . The thermal Hall signal persists in the absence of an external magnetic field and flips sign upon the switching of the magnetization. In combination with theoretical calculations, we show that VI 3 exhibits a dual nature of the THE, i.e., dominated by topological magnons hosted by the ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice at higher temperatures and by phonons induced by the magnon-phonon coupling at lower temperatures. Our results not only position VI 3 as the first ferromagnetic system to investigate both anomalous magnon and phonon THEs, but also render it as a potential platform for spintronics-magnonics applications.

Large anomalous Hall effect and negative magnetoresistance in half-topological semimetals

Proposed mechanisms for large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic topological semimetals include diverging Berry curvatures of Weyl nodes, anticrossing nodal rings or points of non-trivial bands. Here we demonstrate that a half-topological semimetal (HTS) state near a topological critical point can provide an alternative mechanism for a large AHE via systematic studies on an antiferromagnetic (AFM) half-Heusler compound TbPdBi. We not only observe a large AHE with tanΘ H ≈ 2 in its field-driven ferromagnetic (FM) phase, but also find a distinct Hall resistivity peak in its canted AFM phase. Moreover, we observe a large negative magnetoresistance with a value of ~98%. Our in-depth theoretical modelling indicates that these exotic transport properties originate from the HTS state which exhibits Berry curvature cancellation between the trivial spin-up and nontrivial spin-down bands. Our study offers alternative strategies for improved materials design for spintronics and other applications.

Anomalous Hall Effect in Kagome Ferrimagnet GdMn 6 Sn 6

We present magnetotransport data on the ferrimagnet GdMn 6 Sn 6 . From the temperature-dependent data we are able to extract a large intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall effect σ int xz ~ 32 Ω –1 cm –1 and σ int xz ~ 223 Ω –1 cm –1 , which is comparable to values found in other systems also containing kagome nets of transition metals. From our transport anisotropy, as well as our density functional theory calculations, we argue that the system is electronically best described as a three-dimensional system. Furthermore we show that reduced dimensionality is not a strong requirement for obtaining large Berry phase contributions to transport properties. In addition, the coexistence of rare-earth and transition-metal magnetism makes the hexagonal MgFe 6 Ge 6 structure type a promising system to tune the electronic and magnetic properties in future studies.

Topological approach to electron correlations at fractional quantum Hall effect

Highlights: • Braids in 2D electron systems in magnetic field acquire a cyclotron metrics. • Commensurability of 2D braids with Wigner crystal of electrons leads to FQHE. • Homotopy invariants define the hierarchy of FQHE universal in all 2D Hall systems. • Composite fermions illustrate multiloop braids in the simplest homotopy case. • Correlations in FQHE reveal long-range quantum entanglement of all electrons. The classification of homotopy invariants in interacting multi-electron 2D systems at quantizing magnetic fields is presented, explaining the topologically protected correlations occurring at integer and fractional quantum Hall effects. The long-range quantum entanglement is essential for homotopy correlated phases in contrast to the binary entanglement for conventional phases with local order parameters. The classification of homotopy long-range correlated phases induced by the Coulomb interaction of electrons has been derived in terms of homotopy invariants, which are universal and robust against local disorder and single-particle crystal field, as illustrated by experimental observations in various materials with different microscopic structure, like GaAs 2DES, graphene monolayer and bilayer and in Chern topological insulators. The homotopy phases are demonstrated to be topologically protected and immune to single-particle perturbations, temperature chaos and variation of the electron interaction strength. The nonzero repulsive interaction between electrons is shown, however, to be essential for the definition of the homotopy invariants, which disappear in gaseous systems.

Ordering the topological order in the fractional quantum Hall effect

Here, we discuss the possible topological order/topological quantum field theory of different quantum Hall systems. Given the value of the Hall conductivity, we constrain the global symmetry of the low-energy theory and its anomaly. Specifically, the one-form global symmetry and its anomaly are presented as the organizing principle of these systems. This information is powerful enough to lead to a unique minimal topological order (or a small number of minimal topological orders). Almost all of the known experimentally discovered topological orders are these minimal theories. Since this work is interdisciplinary, we made a special effort to relate to researchers with different backgrounds by providing translations between different perspectives.

Moiré commensurability and the quantum anomalous Hall effect in twisted bilayer graphene on hexagonal boron nitride

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is sometimes observed in twisted bilayer graphene (tBG) when it is nearly aligned with an encapsulating hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layer. We propose that the appearance or absence of the QAH effect in individual devices could be related to commensurability between the graphene/graphene and graphene/hBN moiré patterns. We identify a series of points in the (θ GG , θ GBN ) twist-angle space at which the two moiré patterns are commensurate, allowing moiré band theory to be applied, and we show that the band Chern numbers are in this case sensitive to a rigid in-plane hBN displacement. Given this property, we argue that the QAH effect is likely only when (i) the (θ GG , θ GBN ) twist-angle-pair is close enough to a commensurate point that the two moiré patterns yield a supermoiré pattern with a sufficiently long length scale, and (ii) the supermoiré has a percolating topologically nontrivial QAH phase. For twist angles far from commensurability, the hBN layer acts as a source of disorder that can destroy the QAH effect. Our proposal can explain a number of current experimental observations. Finally, further experimental studies that can test this proposal more directly are suggested.
