Experimentation in Exploring Photovoltaic Inverter Dynamics Under Different Irradiance Levels Through a Data-Driven Approach

As conventional direct connections of synchronous generators are being phased out, inverter-based resources (IBRs) with grid support functions are increasingly being integrated into power systems. This transition requires the development of accurate dynamic models for IBRs to predict how power systems will adapt to varying levels of IBRs penetration, establish grid code requirements, and ensure compliance. Here, this study introduces an active probing signal-based data-driven modeling technique to accurately derive the dynamics model of a smart photovoltaic inverter operating in Volt-Watt and Freq-Watt modes, in compliance with the IEEE 1547–2018 standard. The paper focuses on investigating how the dynamics of the PV inverter model respond to fluctuations in solar irradiance, utilizing real-time digital simulator experimentation. The experimental analysis demonstrates that the amplitude of dynamics fluctuates with changes in irradiance across both operational modes and confirms the active power’s dependence on irradiance levels. Furthermore, the nature of inverter dynamics varies distinctly between the different modes of activation. Critically, our findings indicate that dynamic models require DC-gain adjustments to accommodate contrasting irradiance levels, highlighting a negative gradient linear relationship between the DC-gain of each model and the irradiance.

Adaptive protection opportunities, gap assessments, and designs

This report provides a comprehensive overview of adaptive protection schemes in use by distribution systems for protection, switching and control on their systems. A significant focus is placed on how existing schemes can be impacted by increasing penetrations of DER as well as how these schemes can enable DER penetrations to increase. EPRI have conducted a survey of member utilities and performed a comprehensive literature review with the goal of baselining the research and identifying gaps with a focus on the issues that were encountered with adaptive protection on real systems. The five adaptive protection applications that are most prevalent on systems today are discussed in detail. These are weather-based fuse-saving, adaptive protection to reduce short-circuit current, adaptive protection for DER, adaptive protection for microgrids, and distribution automation. A broad overview of the technology is given for each scheme. Issues that have been encountered by utilities are highlighted and the safety and reliability impacts are also examined. As distribution systems, intelligent electronic devices, grid equipment and distribution management systems are rapidly evolving, adaptive protection techniques and technologies will become more widely adopted. This report proposes a framework for a conceptual automatic adaptive protection system. EPRI have ongoing research, development and demonstration projects in all of the constituent elements, however challenges remain to link the elements together in a secure and reliable way. EPRI will continue research into automated adaptive protection applications and challenges for the systems of today and future applications to assist system operators in managing the evolving system.

A Framework for Evaluating the Resilience Contribution of Solar PV and Battery Storage on the Grid

Motivated by decreased cost and climate change concerns, penetration of solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage has been continually increasing. The variability in solar generation assets has led to many challenges for utilities and researchers. Therefore, there is increasing interest in the area of resilience of the grid and contribution from its assets. This paper describes a proposed framework for evaluating the resilience contribution of solar generation and battery storage. The metric provides a quantifiable adaptive capacity measure with uncertainty for the contribution assets proved to the bulk grid. A case study using long and short-term solar generation, with and without battery storage, demonstrates the framework and provides useful insight to the resilience solar and battery storage assets contribute.

Adaptive Internal Model Based Current Control with Embedded Active Damping of a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Inverter with LCL Filter for PV Application

This paper presents an internal model based controller with embedded active damping for a three-phase grid-connected inverter with LCL filter. A strategy to control the grid current based on the internal model principle is presented in this paper. It is known that a third-order LCL filter apart from providing better attenuation also poses the problem of initiating unwanted resonance oscillations especially during transients. To address this problem, an active damping strategy based on virtual resistance emulation on the grid side filter is implemented. Also, to ensure effective active damping, an online parameter update strategy is implemented for the filter parameters. The proposed method provides better attenuation to oscillation damping and achieves good tracking performance without adversely affecting the bandwidth. The architecture is verified based on computer simulations via MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and various important case study results are presented.

AC and DC Hybrid Distribution Grids with Solar Integration: Architecture, Stabilization and Cost Assessment

In this project, a holistic analysis of architecture, stabilization, and cost/efficiency analysis in hybrid AC and DC distribution grids are conducted. Particularly, versatile and cost-efficient multiport converters are developed to not only integrate solar sources and other DERs in DC grids, but also facilitate the interactive operation of DC sub-grids and conventional AC distribution grids. Meanwhile, a universal and extended impedance-based stabilization approach with a decentralized and adaptive virtual impedance loop is developed in hybrid AC and DC distribution grids, which comprehensively covers the active stabilization of DC sections, AC sections, and interface inverters interlinking both AC and DC sections. Furthermore, to quantitatively evaluate the cost and efficiency of hybrid AC and DC distribution grids and quantify the improvement of hybrid AC and DC grids over conventional pure AC grids, the project team develops an alpha-version tool to monitor and calculate the efficiency and cost of the DC, AC, or hybrid AC and DC grids.

Physics-informed Deep Reinforcement Learning-based Control in Power systems

Incorporating physics information into the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) process is a promising approach for addressing the challenges faced in learning-based control design problems for physical systems. Power grid dynamics, being a physical system, adheres to specific physical laws, constraints, as well as operational and control rules. Therefore, consideration of such physics-based law improves the learning process drastically. In general, traditional grid control schemes rely on rule-based mechanisms that cannot adapt to changing operating conditions. To improve the adaptability and computation time, recent research has seen a surge of DRL-based applications in power grid control. A generic DRL-based control design imposes the system performance requirements through the design of reward functions. In some cases, some of the important physics information is injected through this reward function. However, due to the complex dynamics and large state-action space, learning an optimal DRL policy often becomes challenging. Inspired by the latest developments in general machine learning (ML) research, power system researchers have been investigating more direct ways of incorporating physics knowledge into DRL training. This chapter specifically focuses on these aspects of physics-informed DRL designs in grid control. It discusses the significance, applications, research gaps, and open problems that need to be addressed in future research.

Novel Data Driven Noise Emulation Framework using Deep Neural Network for Generating Synthetic PMU Measurements

Sensors play a critical role in supporting day-to-day grid operations and they are essential to operator’s decision-making process. Furthermore, sensors and sensor behaviors need to be emulated with grid simulations to perform modeling studies and to design cutting edge power systems applications. Ensuring the accurate behavior of these applications requires accurate emulation of sensors and pertinent signals. However, most grid simulators and modeling tools assume either zero error scenarios or simplistic noise models that may not always correlate to real-world sensors. To address the above issue, this work presents an initial study on the noise characteristics of phasor measurement units (PMUs), along with models for recreating their unique noise signatures. The proposed methods (both analytical and machine-learning-based) provide a substantial increase in a sensor’s model fidelity, a feature that can be leveraged by an end-user application to yield more accurate system representations. The proposed methods were then applied to micro PMU data from the EPFL microgrid campus to extract sensor noise profiles. This data was used to train a deep learning model, which was tested to emulate the noise characteristics present in actual signals. Based on the observed results and the employed data-driven methodology, the proposed methods may be adapted to replicate the behavior of other grid sensors and power new applications capable of detecting sensor degradation and eventual device failures in near real-time.

Magnetic fields in the formation of the first stars – II. Results

ABSTRACT Beginning with cosmological initial conditions at z = 100, we simulate the effects of magnetic fields on the formation of Population III stars and compare our results with the predictions of Paper I. We use gadget-2 to follow the evolution of the system while the field is weak. We introduce a new method for treating kinematic fields by tracking the evolution of the deformation tensor. The growth rate in this stage of the simulation is lower than expected for diffuse astrophysical plasmas, which have a very low resistivity (high magnetic Prandtl number); we attribute this to the large numerical resistivity in simulations, corresponding to a magnetic Prandtl number of order unity. When the magnetic field begins to be dynamically significant in the core of the minihalo at z = 27, we map it on to a uniform grid and follow the evolution in an adaptive mesh refinement, MHD simulation in orion2. The non-linear evolution of the field in the orion2 simulation violates flux-freezing and is consistent with the theory proposed by Xu & Lazarian. The fields approach equipartition with kinetic energy at densities ∼1010–1012 cm−3. When the same calculation is carried out in orion2 with no magnetic fields, several protostars form, ranging in mass from ∼1 to 30 M⊙; with magnetic fields, only a single ∼30 M⊙ protostar forms by the end of the simulation. Magnetic fields thus suppress the formation of low-mass Pop III stars, yielding a top-heavy Pop III initial mass function and contributing to the absence of observed Pop III stars.
