Realizing Wide-Gamut Human-Centric Display Lighting with K 3 AlP 3 O 9 N:Eu 2+

Abstract Computers, televisions, and smartphones are revolutionized by the invention of InGaN blue light-emitting diode (LED) backlighting. Yet, continual exposure to the intense blue LED emission from these modern displays can cause insomnia and mood disorders. Developing “human-centric” backlighting that uses a violet-emitting LED chip and a trichromatic phosphor mixture to generate color images is one approach that addresses this problem. The challenge is finding a blue-emitting phosphor that possesses a sufficiently small Stokes’ shift to efficiently down-convert violet LED light and produce a narrow blue emission. This work reports a new oxynitride phosphor that meets this demand. K 3 AlP 3 O 9 N:Eu 2+ exhibits an unexpectedly narrow (45 nm, 2206 cm -1 ), thermally robust, and efficient blue photoluminescence upon violet excitation. Computational modeling and temperature-dependent optical property measurements reveal that the narrow emission arises from a rare combination of preferential excitation and site-selective quenching. The resulting chromaticity coordinates of K 3 AlP 3 O 9 N:Eu 2+ lie closer to the vertex of the Rec. 2020 than a blue LED chip and provides access to ≈10% more colors than a commercial tablet when combined with commercial red- and green-emitting phosphors. Alongside the wide gamut, tuning the emission from the violet LED and phosphor blend can reduce blue light emissions to produce next-generation, human-centric displays.

Stabilization Of The CN 3 5− Anion In Recoverable High‐pressure Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) Oxoguanidinates

Abstract A series of isostructural Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) oxoguanidinates was synthesized under high‐pressure (25–54 GPa) high‐temperature (2000–3000 K) conditions in laser‐heated diamond anvil cells. The crystal structure of this novel class of compounds was determined via synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) as well as corroborated by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) solids are composed of the hitherto unknown CN 3 5− guanidinate anion—deprotonated guanidine. Changes in unit cell volumes and compressibility of Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) compounds are found to be dictated by the lanthanide contraction phenomenon. Decompression experiments show that Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions. The stabilization of the CN 3 5− guanidinate anion at ambient conditions provides new opportunities in inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry.

Extraction of 88 Y, 152 Eu, 228 Ac, 241 Am, and 244 Cm with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) resin

In this report the behavior of 88 Y, 152 Eu, 228 Ac, 241 Am, and 244 Cm was studied with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone resin with batch uptake, kinetics and column studies. Studies were performed in acetate buffer solutions (pH ~ 2 to ~ 6) and there was high uptake of all isotopes, except 228 Ac, at pH > 4.5. The kinetics of uptake were reasonable, although slower for the actinides, and sufficient for column studies. The retention of 88 Y, 152 Eu, and 241 Am on the resin in column studies was demonstrated as well as a reasonable separation of these isotopes from 228 Ac.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy of trivalent Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy chlorides and oxychlorides

Growing interest in next generation molten salt nuclear reactors necessitates a fundamental understanding of the chemical and physico-chemical properties of fission products, including elements of the lanthanide series. In this study, we probed coordination environment of Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy in their chloride salts with both laboratory and synchrotron scale X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Here the aerobic melting was carried out with LnCl 3 ·nH 2 O, where Ln is Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy, and yielded predominant formation of oxychlorides (LnOCl), that was confirmed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computations were performed to obtain ground state structures, lattice parameters, and to simulate L 3 -edge XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) spectra of the LnCl 3 ·nH 2 O and LnOCl. A blue shift, initially predicted by our calculations, was also observed for the experimental Ln L 3 -edge XANES spectra of the hydrated trichlorides vs oxychlorides, highlighting the power of combining the predictive ability of theory with experiment to elucidate the properties of the compounds of interest. The blue shift is indicative of structural stabilization of LnCl 3 ·nH 2 O due to higher symmetry compared with LnOCl. To the best of knowledge, this is a first study providing the framework for fundamental insights into the structure of Ln trichlorides and oxychlorides in support of future characterization of lanthanides in the molten salt environment.

Catalyzed oxidation of nuclear graphite by simulated fission products Sr, Eu, and I

The influence of three fission products Sr, Eu, and I on the oxidation of IG-110 nuclear graphite was studied in the temperature range of 400 to 1000 °C. Sr and Eu were introduced as chlorides, and I was introduced as NaI. The temperature dependence of both CO 2 and CO production during the graphite oxidation measured with mass spectroscopy and infrared spectrometry shows that the introduction of these three compounds to graphite significantly decreases the onset temperature for the oxidation of graphite. Among the three compounds, NaI is the most active towards the oxidation reaction, characterized by a significant decrease of the onset temperature from approximately 650 to 400 °C before and after its introduction to graphite. Separate measurements of CO 2 and CO concentration at varying temperatures enable the calculation of the activation energy for the formation of CO 2 and CO. The activation energies for the oxidation of pure and fission product-impregnated graphite samples decrease in the following order: standard IG-110 graphite, EuCl 3 -impregnated IG-110, SrCl 2 -impregnated IG-110, and NaI-impregnated IG-110. This trend indicates that the three compounds catalyze the oxidation of graphite at temperatures relevant to the operation of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. Furthermore, it is found that the three compounds can also affect the molar ratio of reaction products CO 2 and CO, and the rates of the graphite oxidation. At temperatures higher than about 850 °C, the impregnated samples exhibit lower CO 2 : CO ratios than the pure graphite. Different from EuCl 3 and NaI, the introduction of SrCl 2 decreases the graphite oxidation rates at temperatures higher than about 770 °C. Their catalytic mechanism can be understood based on a redox cycle of the intermediate active species, promoting the dissociation of molecular oxygen and transfer to the carbon.

High-pressure synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland-lattice oxides BaL n 2 ZnO 5 (L n = Pr, Sm, Eu)

BaPr 2 ZnO 5 , BaSm 2 ZnO 5 , and BaEu 2 ZnO 5 – a series of 4f magnetic insulators comprising the Shastry-Sutherland lattice – were synthesized via a solid-state reaction under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The magnetic behaviors are well characterized by the localized 4f electrons of each Ln 3+ (= Pr, Sm, Eu) under the influence of the crystal-electric field of the surrounding ions. The magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements of BaPr 2 ZnO 5 (Pr 3+ ; 4f 2 3 H 4 ) indicate the splitting of the ground state J-multiplet due to the crystal-electric field. BaSm 2 ZnO 5 (Sm 3+ ; 4f 5 6 H 5/2 ) is a strong Van Vleck paramagnet, while BaEu 2 ZnO 5 is non-magnetic due to the 7 F 0 ground state (Eu 3+ ; 4f 6 7 F 0 ). The series of new oxides enriches a group of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice materials and helps to develop a range of two-dimensional quantum materials.

Molecular Dynamics and Free Energy Calculations of Dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 Diastereoisomers with Sm 2+ , Eu 2+ , Dy 2+ , Yb 2+ , Cf 2+ , and Three Halide Salts in Tetrahydrofuran and Acetonitrile Using the AMOEBA Force Field

With the continual development of lanthanides (Ln) in current technological devices, an efficient separation process is needed that can recover greater amounts of these rare elements. Dicyclohexano-18-crown-6(DCH18C6) is a crown ether that may be a promising candidate for Ln separation, but additional research is required. As such, molecular dynamics(MD) simulations have been performed on four divalent lanthanide halide salts(Sm 2+ , Eu 2+ , Dy 2+ , and Yb 2+ ) and one divalent actinide halide salt (Cf 2+ ) bound to three diastereoisomers of DCH18C6. Dy 2+ , Yb 2+ , Cf 2+ , DCH18C6, and tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent were parameterized for the AMOEBA polarizable force field for the first time, whereas existing parameters for Sm 2+ and Eu 2+ were utilized from our previous efforts. A coordination number (CN) of six for Ln 2+ /An 2+ –O solvated in THF indicated that the cations interacted almost entirely with the oxygens of the polyether ring. A CN of one for Ln 2+ /An 2+ -N solvated in acetonitrile for systems containing iodide suggested that theN atom of acetonitrile was competitive with I – for cation interactions. Fluctuation between five and six CNs for Dy 2+ and Yb 2+ suggested that although the cations remained in the polyether ring, the size of the ring may not be an ideal fit as these cations possess comparatively smaller ionic radii. Gibbs binding free energies of Sm 2+ in all DCH18C6 diastereoisomers solvated in THF were calculated. The binding free energy of the cis-syn-cis diastereoisomer was the most favorable, followed by cis-anti-cis, and then trans-anti-trans. Lastly, two major types of conformation were observed for each diastereoisomer that were related to the electrostatic interactions and charge density of the cations.

Magnetic and electronic properties unveil polaron formation in Eu$$_5$$In$$_2$$Sb$$_6$$

Abstract The intermetallic compound Eu $$_5$$ 5 In $$_2$$ 2 Sb $$_6$$ 6 , an antiferromagnetic material with nonsymmorphic crystalline structure, is investigated by magnetic, electronic transport and specific heat measurements. Being a Zintl phase, insulating behavior is expected. Our thermodynamic and magnetotransport measurements along different crystallographic directions strongly indicate polaron formation well above the magnetic ordering temperatures. Pronounced anisotropies of the magnetic and transport properties even above the magnetic ordering temperature are observed despite the Eu $$^{2+}$$ 2 + configuration which testify to complex and competing magnetic interactions between these ions and give rise to intricate phase diagrams discussed in detail. Our results provide a comprehensive framework for further detailed study of this multifaceted compound with possible nontrivial topology.

Investigations towards incorporation of Eu 3+ and Cm 3+ during ZrO 2 crystallization in aqueous solution

Nuclear energy provides a widely applied carbon-reduced energy source. Following operation, the spent nuclear fuel (SNF), containing a mixture of radiotoxic elements such as transuranics, needs to be safely disposed of. Safe storage of SNF in a deep geological repository (DGR) relies on multiple engineered and natural retention barriers to prevent environmental contamination. In this context, zirconia (ZrO 2 ) formed on the SNF rod cladding, could be employed as an engineered barrier for immobilization of radionuclides via structural incorporation. This study investigates the incorporation of Eu 3+ and Cm 3+ , representatives for trivalent transuranics, into zirconia by co-precipitation and crystallization in aqueous solution at 80 °C. Complementary structural and microstructural characterization has been carried out by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), spectrum imaging analysis based on energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in scanning transmission electron microscopy mode (STEM-EDXS), and luminescence spectroscopy. The results reveal the association of the dopants with the zirconia particles and elucidate the presence of distinct bulk and superficially incorporated species. Hydrothermal aging for up to 460 days in alkaline media points to great stability of these incorporated species after initial crystallization, with no indication of phase segregation or release of Eu 3+ and Cm 3+ over time. These results suggest that zirconia would be a suitable technical retention barrier for mobilized trivalent actinides in a DGR.

Advanced thermal/environmental barrier coatings of high-entropy rare earth disilicates tuned by strong anharmonicity of Eu 2 Si 2 O 7

Advancing thermal/environmental barrier coating (TEBC) materials with integrated thermal-mechanical functions is paramount for safeguarding SiC-based ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) in high-efficiency gas turbines. Herein, we employ a synergistic approach, combining density functional theory (DFT) methods and combinatorial chemistry techniques, to design high-performance and low-cost RE 2 Si 2 O 7 (RE = rare earth elements) TEBC materials tailored for enhanced compatibility with SiC-based CMCs. Expanding on phase stability of alloying pure RE 2 Si 2 O 7 , the investigation extends to the mechanical and thermal properties of solid solution systems, including Er 1/2 Y 3/4 Yb 3/4 Si 2 O 7 , Gd 1/4 Er 1/4 Y 3/4 Yb 3/4 Si 2 O 7 , and Eu 1/4 Er 1/4 Y 3/4 Yb 3/4 Si 2 O 7 . The solid solution systems exhibit a major reduction in lattice thermal conductivity relative to their pure counterparts, achieving ultralow values of 0.25 to 0.39 W m −1 K −1 at 1500 K. Furthermore, the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of these solid solutions are precisely tuned within the desired range for SiC (4.4 to 5.5 × 10 −6 K −1 ), while maintaining good mechanical properties. Here, in particular, the addition of Eu 2 Si 2 O 7 demonstrates to be an important variable to the tuning of CTE and lattice thermal conductivity by leveraging its strong anharmonicity, presenting a pioneering avenue for fine-tuning material properties. In summary, this research not only identifies promising TEBC materials with superior thermal properties, but also introduces a valuable computational material design methodology for the rapid discovery of complex materials for harsh environments.
