Investigation of environmental effects on coatings for thermal control of large space vehicles

The objective of significantly advancing the state-of-the-art of white, spacecraft-radiator coatings has been realized in a comprehensive goal-oriented, pigmented-coatings research program. Considered were inorganic pigments and coatings, silicone polymers and coatings, the design and construction of a combined ultraviolet-plus-proton irradiation facility, the development of zinc orthotitanate pigment and coatings, and the effects on several low alpha sub s/epsilon paints of combined ultraviolet and proton irradiation.

The radiative transfer equation and environmental effects in the upper atmosphere.

A highly effective approach to the solution of the radiative transfer equation, including the effects of emission, absorption, and multiply scattered radiation, is described. The transfer equation is cast in its unsteady hyperbolic form which is amenable to several different numerical methods of solution. Comparisons of solutions with emission, absorption, and scattering of radiation, are presented to demonstrate the validity of the present approach.

Acquisition system environmental effects study

The effects of vibration, warm gas exposure, and feed system startup/shutdown fluid dynamics on capillary-screen propellant retention capabilities are quantified. The existing technology is extended to the point where quantitative conlusions in terms of design criteria may be drawn.

Environmental effects on the torsion and flexure fatigue properties of graphite-epoxy composites

Effects of torsional and flexural fatigue on the long-time integrity of advanced graphite-epoxy structural composites have been investigated. Reversed (R = - 1) and unidirectional (R = 0) torsional fatigue tests were made on unidirectional, cross-plied and woven graphite fiber materials in air and water at room temperature and at 74 C. Flexural fatigue tests (4-point bending) with R = - 1 were run in air and water at room temperature, and at R = 0 in air. Results show that in torsional cycling, both water environment and higher test temperature contribute to significant degradation of torsional stiffness. The degradation of stiffness from torsional stress cycling was observed to be much greater with R = - 1 than with simple R = 0 cycling. The effect of environment is also greater in the fully reversed cycling.

Combined environmental effects on polymers

A series of space simulation tests on FEP Teflon and other polymeric thermal control coatings was conducted using UV, electrons, protons and Lyman-alpha wavelength vacuum UV radiation. Interest was centered on simulating synchronous altitude radiation environment conditions. Physical changes in materials included loss of specularity and introduction of a high density of photographable tracking defects on a microscopic scale. An example shows the discharge of trapped electrons when dielectric strength is exceeded. This leaves a portion of the Teflon volume no longer clear, but diffusely transmitting and reflecting. Thermophysical changes included degradation of solar absorptance coefficients as much as five-fold. The situation that prevails for earth orbit contrasted with polymer performance in the solar wind. It is suggested that conductive overcoatings be developed for polymers and other flexible materials, comparable or superior to those available for fused silica SSMs.

Environmental effects on polymeric matrix composites

Current epoxy resins utilized in high performance structural composites absorb moisture from high humidity environments. Such moisture absorption causes plasticization of the resin to occur with concurrent swelling and lowering of the glass transition temperature. Similar effects are observed in composites. Data are presented showing the effects of absorbed moisture on Hercules AS/3501-5 graphite/epoxy composites. Prediction of moisture content and distribution in composites, along with reduction in mechanical properties, are discussed.

Environmental Effects of Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor Exhaust Plumes

The deposition of NOx and HCl in the stratosphere from the space shuttle solid rocket motors (SRM) and exhaust plume is discussed. A detailed comparison between stratospheric deposition rates using the baseline SRM propellant and an alternate propellant, which replaces ammonium perchlorate by ammonium nitrate, shows the total NOx deposition rate to be approximately the same for each propellant. For both propellants the ratio of the deposition rates of NOx to total chlorine-containing species is negligibly small. Rocket exhaust ground cloud transport processes in the troposphere are also examined. A brief critique of the multilayer diffusion models (presently used for predicting pollutant deposition in the troposphere) is presented, and some detailed cloud rise calculations are compared with data for Titan 3C launches. The results show that, when launch time meteorological data are used as input, the model can reasonably predict measured cloud stabilization heights.

Environmental effects on aluminum fracture

The sustained load stress corrosion cracking (SCC) threshold for aluminum alloy 214 was determined using smooth (sigma sub TH) and precracked (K sub ISCC) specimens, and cyclic load growth behavior in 3.5% NaCl salt solution was studied. The relationship between K sub ISCC and sigma sub TH was also studied. The work showed that 2124-T851 aluminum alloy in plate gage has a moderately high resistance to stress corrosion attack. Experimental results showed that no SCC occurred in the longitudinal and long transverse directions in any of the tests. Some SCC was found by smooth tests in the short transverse direction, and the data were confirmed by two test methods-sigma sub TH = 275 MN/sq m (40 ksi). No SCC was found from compact specimen tests in any direction: surface flaw and center notch specimens evaluated in the short transverse direction exhibited SCC. The data indicate that stress corrosion behavior is defect, size, and stress dependent, but not entirely in accordance with a stress intensity controlled mechanism.

Space environmental effects and the solar power satellite

Some preliminary findings regarding the interactions between the space plasma at GEO and the Marshall Space Flight Center January 1978 baseline Satellite Power Systems (SPS) design are summarized. These include the following: (1) the parasitic load will be dominated by photoelectrons and will amount to about 34 MW; (2) material of higher conductivity than kapton should be used for the solar reflector substrate and the solar cell blanket support material; (3) the satellite structure and solar reflector should be tied electrically to midpoint voltage of each solar cell array; and (4) tests should be run on the proposed solar cell cover glass material (synthetic sapphire) to determine if breakdown is expected.

Proceedings of Shuttle Environmental Effects Program Review

Measurements of Titan exhaust cloud effluents are documented and compared, mesoscale and microphysical acid rain models are described, and a submesoscale model is proposed. Various instruments and facilities for measuring ice nuclei and other constituents of solid rocket motor exhaust effluents are discussed. Regional air quality monitoring and rain collection systems are described, and the ecological impact of solid rocket motor exhaust effluents is examined. The potential effect of space shuttle launches is estimated where data are adequate.

Evaluation and prediction of long term space environmental effects on non-metallic materials

The effects of prolonged spacecraft materials were determined and the results compared with predicted behavior. The adhesion and dielectric properties of poly-thermaleze and therm-amid magnet wire insulation were studied. The tensile properties of Lexan, polyurethane, polyethelyne, lucite, and nylon were studied well as the flexure and tensile characteristic of Adlock 851, a phenolic laminate. The volume resistivity of Cho-seal, a conductive elastomer was also a examined. Tables show the time exposed at thermal vacuum, and the high, low, and average MPA and KSI.

Environmental effects of an aircraft at cruise: An update

The status of the calculations of ozone change due to high altitude aircraft is critically reviewed and important areas of uncertainty identified. Laboratory determinations of chemical reaction rates and modeling refinements show that the effect of cruise altitude emissions on stratospheric ozone has changed from one of ozone decrease to one of slight increase. It is concluded that the uncertainties in the present understanding of the effects of high altitude aircraft are such as to warrant continued studies.
