Modern Hardness Assurance: A Brand New Game Except When it Isn't

Mission success criteria at the device level and required device operation/availability can determine the risk posed by the radiation effects for a given device in a given environment, but rarely are the same from one mission to another. A large portion of New Space / SmallSat missions to date have benefitted from relatively short mission durations and chosen orbits that have less severe particle populations than their larger counterparts. As mission objectives grow and become reliant on their chosen devices operating for longer lives and in more harsh environments, requirements need to reflect the changing scope but not hinder design adoptions from previously successful missions that provide new capabilities. This presentation describes notable differences in radiation environments, the requirement changes that come with choice of orbit, and prioritizations for mission success criteria to be determined by the designers of the system and subsystems. Test methodologies based on radiation effect categories are explained briefly; when they are needed. Similarity data (and its limitations) are discussed so that caveats and short-comings are understood. Reliability and assurance quantification may not always be possible, but determining where risks are taken and how to classify them is the essential topic for the intended practice: to establish radiation requirements with the goal of getting to mission success.

Exceptional Thermal Properties of Polymer-Derived Ceramic Composites Reinforced with High Volume Fractions of Boron Nitride Nanotube at Elevated Temperature

We report for the first time the synthesis of boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) reinforced ceramic composites using the polymer derived ceramic (PDC) processing route. The nanocomposites had a BNNT loading of up to 35.4 vol.%. TGA results showed that the nanocomposites have good thermal stability up to 900 oC in air. BNNTs in the nanocomposites survived in an oxidizing environment up to 900 oC, revealing that the nanocomposites can be used for high temperature applications. Thermal conductivity of PDC reinforced with 35.4 vol.% BNNT was measured as 4.123 W/(m·K) at room temperature, which is a 2100 % increase compared to that of pristine PDC. The thermal conductivity value increases with the increase of BNNT content. A thermal conductivity percolation phenomenon appeared when the BNNT content increased to 36±5 vol.%. The results of this study showed that BNNTs could effectively improve the thermal conductivity of PDC materials. BNNT reinforced PDC could be used as thermal structural materials in a harsh environment at the temperature up to 900 deg C.

Propynal, an Interstellar Molecule with an Exceptionally Strong C≡C Infrared Band - Laboratory Infrared Data and Applications

Isomers with the formula C3H2O have intrigued and puzzled astronomers and astrochemists for many years, with propynal and cyclopropenone, but not propadienone, known to be interstellar. However, there is a severe lack of laboratory spectra of the solid phases of these compounds with which to investigate their interstellar chemistry. Here we present the first infrared spectra of amorphous and crystalline forms of propynal, HCC-C(O)H, at multiple temperatures. Band positions are tabulated and band strengths are derived in terms of absorption coefficients and integrated intensities. Optical constants are calculated for amorphous propynal, refractive indices are measured, and densities are estimated. Three laboratory astrochemistry applications are described, including a new spectral identification in an earlier paper. It is shown that propynal's C≡C infrared absorbance is about 30,000% stronger than the corresponding feature in acetylene. This band's intensity and spectral position make it an attractive candidate for astronomical searches involving interstellar ices.

Exceptional Warmth in the Northern Hemisphere during January through March of 2020: The Roles of Unforced and Forced Modes of Atmospheric Variability

Much of northern Eurasia experienced record high temperatures during the first three months of 2020, and the eastern United States experienced a significant heat wave during March. In this study, we show that the above episodes of extraordinary warmth reflect to a large extent the unusual persistence and large amplitude of three well-known modes of atmospheric variability: the Arctic Oscillation (AO), the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the Pacific–North American (PNA) pattern. We employ a “replay” approach in which simulations with the NASA GEOS AGCM are constrained to remain close to MERRA-2 over specified regions of the globe in order to identify the underlying forcings and regions that acted to maintain these modes well beyond their typical submonthly time scales. We show that an extreme positive AO played a major role in the surface warming over Eurasia, with forcing from the tropical Pacific and Indian Ocean regions acting to maintain its positive phase. Forcing from the tropical Indian Ocean and Atlantic regions produced positive NAO-like responses, contributing to the warming over eastern North America and Europe. The strong heat wave that developed over eastern North America during March was primarily associated with an extreme negative PNA that developed as an instability of the North Pacific jet, with tropical forcing providing support for a prolonged negative phase. A diagnosis of the zonally symmetric circulation shows that the above extratropical surface warming occurred underneath a deep layer of tropospheric warming, driven by stationary eddy-induced changes in the mean meridional circulation.
