Electrolyte formulations for electrochemical cells containing a silicon electrode

Additives to electrolytes that enable the formation of comparatively more robust SEI films on silicon anodes. The SEI films in these embodiments are seen to be more robust in part because the batteries containing these materials have higher coulombic efficiency and longer cycle life than comparable batteries without such additives.

Partial-Vacuum-Gasketed Electrochemical Corrosion Cell

An electrochemical cell for making corrosion measurements has been designed to prevent or reduce crevice corrosion, which is a common source of error in prior such cells. The present cell (see figure) includes an electrolyte reservoir with O-ring-edged opening at the bottom. In preparation for a test, the reservoir, while empty, is pressed down against a horizontal specimen surface to form an O-ring seal. A purge of air or other suitable gas is begun in the reservoir, and the pressure in the reservoir is regulated to maintain a partial vacuum. While maintaining the purge and partial vacuum, and without opening the interior of the reservoir to the atmosphere, the electrolyte is pumped into the reservoir. The reservoir is then slowly lifted a short distance off the specimen. The level of the partial vacuum is chosen such that the differential pressure is just sufficient to keep the electrolyte from flowing out of the reservoir through the small O-ring/specimen gap. Electrochemical measurements are then made. Because there is no gasket (and, hence, no crevice between the specimen and the gasket), crevice corrosion is unlikely to occur.

Electrolysis Performance Improvement Concept Study (EPICS) Flight Experiment-Reflight

The Electrolysis Performance Improvement Concept Study (EPICS) is a flight experiment to demonstrate and validate in a microgravity environment the Static Feed Electrolyzer (SFE) concept which was selected for the use aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for oxygen (O2) generation. It also is to investigate the impact of microgravity on electrochemical cell performance. Electrochemical cells are important to the space program because they provide an efficient means of generating O2 and hydrogen (H2) in space. Oxygen and H2 are essential not only for the survival of humans in space but also for the efficient and economical operation of various space systems. Electrochemical cells can reduce the mass, volume and logistical penalties associated with resupply and storage by generating and/or consuming these gases in space. An initial flight of the EPICS was conducted aboard STS-69 from September 7 to 8, 1995. A temperature sensor characteristics shift and a missing line of software code resulted in only partial success of this initial flight. Based on the review and recommendations of a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Johnson Space Center (JSC) review team a reflight activity was initiated to obtain the remaining desired results, not achieved during the initial flight.

In Situ Liquid Electron Microscope Cells Strongly Attenuate Electrochemical Behavior

In situ electrochemical Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (ec-S/TEM) probes the dynamics of electrochemical processes in real time and at high spatial resolution. This method utilizes microfabricated electrochemical cells, with enclosed dimensions of 800 μm wide, 800 μm long, and 1–2 μm tall, with electron-transparent silicon nitride windows. Working, counter, and reference electrodes in the configuration studied are deposited Pt with a planar surface area of about 1 μm 2 and a height of 50 nm. The cell confines the electrolyte within a 1 μm tall channel, and the microfabricated electrodes have a non-standard geometry, are coplanar, and are not front-facing. As such, standard assumptions of electrochemical experiments do not apply. COMSOL modeling was used to compare and contrast differences in electrochemical behavior between conventional experimental setups and the in situ ec-S/TEM cells. Cell height strongly affected voltammogram measurements: peak magnitudes and shifts correlate directly to cell height. Reactant concentration above the electrode quickly decreases during deposition, leading to a planar diffusion-dominated regime. The concentration gradient prioritizes particle growth along the thin edges of the electrode and not on the planar part of the electrode. Experiments done in the ec-S/TEM ex situ of a TEM verify the model’s accuracy.

Geometric Optimization of an Electrochemical Purification Cell to Prevent Corrosion in CSP Plants During Operation

When exposed to moisture or oxygen, molten chloride salts produce corrosive impurities which degrade containment alloys. This can significantly decrease the lifetime and increase costs of molten-salt-based systems. To overcome this barrier, we designed and modeled an electrochemical purification cell to remove the corrosive impurity MgOH+. Various reactor architectures, including continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) and plug flow reactors (PFRs) were investigated. Steady-state thermoelectric properties were evaluated using analytical methods, allowing assessment of the effects of structure and design parameters such as flow rate, cell length, and cross-sectional area of molten salt. The results suggest that our design could most effectively increase reliability and decrease costs of molten-chloride-salt-based systems by protecting them during continuous operation using an annular plug flow reactor.

Optimizing the Operational Parameters of an Electrochemical Purification Cell for Corrosion Mitigation in CSP Plants During Operation: Preprint

To make concentrating solar power (CSP) cost-competitive, the next generation of CSP plants will increase efficiency by operating at a higher temperature, which will require a new thermal energy storage material. One option for the thermal energy storage material is a ternary chloride salt that is stable at the temperatures required, but reacts easily with the atmosphere to form MgOHCl, a corrosive impurity. If left unchecked, this impurity will corrode the containment alloys, potentially leading to dangerous spills. We are working to design an electrochemical purification cell to remove MgOHCl from the molten chloride salt during CSP plant operation. In this paper, we use predictive modeling to assess the rate at which purification must occur. Additionally, we analyze possible process flow pathways for the molten chloride salts. Ultimately, we determine that implementation of a single reactor through which all chloride salts flow is the most efficient design to reduce impurity concentration below 0.1 mol % impurity.

An electrochemical rebalance cell for Redox systems

An electrochemical rebalance cell for maintaining electrochemical balance, at the system level, of the acidified aqueous iron chloride and chromium chloride reactant solutions in the redox energy storage system was constructed and evaluated. The electrochemical reaction for the cathode is Fe(+3) + e(-) yields Fe(+2), and that for the anode is 1/2H2 yields H(+) + e(-). The iron (carbon felt) electrode and the hydrogen (platinized carbon) electrode are separated by an anion exchange membrane. The performance of the rebalance cell is discussed as well as the assembly of a single rebalance cell and multicell stacks. Various cell configurations were tested and the results are presented and discussed. The rebalance cell was also used to demonstrate its ability, as a preparative tool, for making high purity solutions of soluble reduced metal ionic species. Preparations of titanium, copper, vanadium and chromium ions in acidified solutions were evaluated.

Sequential Electrochemical Flow Cell for Complex Multicomponent Electrocatalysis

A highly efficient flow cell for sequential electrolysis containing two complete electrochemical cells, capable of generating reactive species at the upstream working electrode and transporting them to the downstream working electrode, is demonstrated. Deconvolution of the intermixed electrode circuits is accomplished through analysis of the inherent resistance of the electrolyte, which allows for precise and independent control of the electrochemical potential at each electrode without altering concentrations of supporting or background electrolyte species. Sequential electrolysis involving oxidation of hydrogen and reduction of the generated protons downstream is demonstrated at nearly 100% efficiency on Pt-decorated dealloyed porous Nb catalysts. The conversion efficiency of the catalysts is discussed in terms of their geometries and active surface composition, elucidating strategies for use of sequential electrolysis cells for fundamental and applied studies.

Performance characteristics of the electrochemical concentration cell ozonesonde

A large number of electrochemical concentration cell (ECC) ozonesondes were calibrated in relation to a UV photometric absorption ozone instrument prior to using the ozonesondes in atmospheric soundings. The two methods of measuring ozone were in reasonable agreement on the average, but there was considerable variation from one ozonesonde to another. Averaging the individual linear regressions gives an ECC ozone concentration equal to 0 + or - 8 nbar plus (0.96 + or - 0.10) times the concentration determined with the UV instrument, where uncertainties represent 90% confidence limits. Applying individual calibration corrections to atmospheric sounding data reduced the mean difference between Dobson spectrophotometric measurements of total ozone overburdens and corresponding values obtained from ozonesonde data from -8.5 + or - 8.2 to -1.4 + or - 7.3% for a series of measurements carried out in 1977. Corresponding uncorrected and corrected differences averaged 3.2 + or - 9.7 and 1.9 + or - 10.6%, respectively, for soundings carried out in 1976.

Electrochemical conversion of methane to ethylene, olefins, and paraffins using metal-supported solid oxide cells

Electrochemical oxidative coupling of methane (E-OCM) with Sr 2 Fe 1·5 Mo 0·5 O 6–δ (SFM) catalyst is demonstrated with metal-supported solid oxide cells (MS-SOC). SFM anode and Pr 6 O 11 cathode catalysts are loaded into a porous symmetric-architecture cell by infiltration and firing. The most effective chelating agent (citric acid/ethyl glycol) and optimal firing/reducing temperatures (850 °C/750 °C) for the SFM catalyst precursor solution are selected and confirmed by cell testing. Operating temperature, cell voltage, and oxygen concentration at the cathode greatly affect the methane conversion rate and product selectivity by controlling the oxygen ion flow. CH 4 conversion of 85.8% is obtained, with C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 6 , and H 2 concentrations of 10.5%, 12.3%, and 25.6% at 800 °C, respectively, in the product exhaust gas. Reasonable stability of the current density and methane conversion is demonstrated during 200 h operation. Furthermore, this research demonstrates technical progress in catalyst and device development for the E-OCM reaction to synthesize valuable chemicals.

Electrochemical concentration cell ozonesonde performance evaluation

A large number of electrochemical concentration cell (EDD) ozonesondes were calibrated relative to ultraviolet photometric absorption (254 nm) to determine their precision and accuracy. The average agreement with UV photometry was found to be good, but with considerable variation from one ECC ozonesonde to another. Applying individual calibrations to vertical ozone profiles reduced the systematic differences between ECC ozonesonde total ozone values and Dobson spectrophotometric determinations of the same quantity, but did not improve random differences.

Overcharge protection of batteries using current interrupt devices

A battery system includes a main electrochemical cell that includes a cathode and an anode, a cathode tab electrically coupled to the cathode, and an anode tab electrically coupled to the anode. A second electrochemical cell is electrically coupled to the cathode tab and the anode tab. An interrupt device, such as a bi-stable metal disc, is operably coupled to the second electrochemical cell and at least one of the cathode tab or the anode tab. Upon overcharging of the main electrochemical cell, the voltage between the cathode tab and the anode tab causes the second electrochemical cell to generate gases that triggers the interrupt device, which in turn disconnects at least one of the cathode tab or the anode tab, thereby protecting the main electrochemical cell from further damages.
