Thermalization at low temperatures via weakly damped multisite baths

We study the thermalization properties of one-dimensional open quantum systems coupled to baths at their boundary. The baths are driven to their thermal states via Lindblad operators, while the system undergoes Hamiltonian dynamics. We specifically consider multisite baths and investigate the extent to which the late-time steady state resembles a Gibbs state at some controllable temperature set by the baths. We study three models: a noninteracting fermion model accessible via free-fermion technology, and two interacting models, the XZ model and the chiral clock model, which are accessible via tensor network methods. We show that, by tuning towards the weak coupling and slow relaxation limits, one can engineer low temperatures in the bulk of the system provided the bath size is big enough. Here, we use this capability to study energy transport in the XZ model at lower temperatures than previously reported. Our work paves the way for future studies of interacting open quantum systems at low temperatures.

Magnetic Damping Modulation in IrMn 3 / Ni 80 Fe 20 via the Magnetic Spin Hall Effect

Noncollinear antiferromagnets can have additional spin Hall effects due to the net chirality of their magnetic spin structure, which provides for more complex spin-transport phenomena compared to ordinary nonmagnetic materials. Here we investigated how ferromagnetic resonance of permalloy (Ni 80 Fe 20 ) is modulated by spin Hall effects in adjacent epitaxial IrMn 3 films. We observe a large dc modulation of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth for currents applied along the [001] IrMn 3 direction. Furthermore, this very strong angular dependence of spin-orbit torques from dc currents through the bilayers can be explained by the magnetic spin Hall effect where IrMn 3 provides novel pathways for modulating magnetization dynamics electrically.

Spin-filter tunneling detection of antiferromagnetic resonance with electrically tunable damping

Antiferromagnetic spintronics offers the potential for higher-frequency operations and improved insensitivity to magnetic fields compared to ferromagnetic spintronics. However, previous electrical techniques to detect antiferromagnetic dynamics have utilized large, millimeter-scale bulk crystals. In this work, we demonstrate direct electrical detection of antiferromagnetic resonance in structures on the few-micrometer scale using spin-filter tunneling in platinum ditelluride (PtTe 2 )/bilayer chromium sulfide bromide (CrSBr)/graphite junctions in which the tunnel barrier is the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrSBr. This sample geometry allows not only efficient detection but also electrical control of the antiferromagnetic resonance through spin-orbit torque from the PtTe 2 electrode. The ability to efficiently detect and control antiferromagnetic resonance enables detailed studies of the physics governing these high-frequency dynamics.
