Fortalecimiento de la Electrificación Rural en Honduras: Una Evaluación Integrada de PV+BESS y Usos Productivos de la Electricidad en Gracias a Dios, Honduras [Empowering Rural Electrification in Honduras: An Integrated Assessment of PV/BESS and Productive Uses of Electricity in Gracias a Dios] (Spanish Translation)

Honduras faces significant challenges in its energy sector, particularly in rural areas where access to reliable and affordable electricity remains limited. The flagship rural electrification initiative for Honduras Secretary of Energy (SEN) is the Politica de Acceso Universal a la Electricidad (PAUEH - Universal Electricity Access Policy), a key solution for addressing this energy poverty is the deployment of more than 1700 distributed solar and hybrid mini-grid solutions. In late 2023 as a first step towards supporting SEN's electrification efforts, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed a literature review of SEN electrification policy documents and conducted a series of technical capacity-building workshops with SEN and other energy sector stakeholders in Honduras focused on using NREL's open-source REopt tool to conduct techno-economic assessments and develop least-cost optimizations for potential solar + storage mini-grid systems. Building on some initial capacity building on mini-grid modeling, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) worked with SEN to develop a detailed techno-economic assessment for electrifying two schools, a healthcare clinic, and a hospital in a hypothetical community within the department of Gracias a Dios. The analysis also evaluates the business case for cold storage productive use of energy (PUE) applications for the fisheries value chain and how the incorporation of these PUE loads potentially impacts both the viability of the PV+BESS solutions as well as local economic development. By assessing the potential for deployment of integrated PV/BESS systems to both support critical community services like education and healthcare, as well as potential for downstream enterprise and economic development, this analysis represents a first step that can help to inform specific strategies for development of pilot PV+BESS projects aligned with national priorities and sector level planning under PAUEH. A Forward-Looking Dataset of EV Managed Charging Resource and Costs

This presentation summarizes a high-resolution, forward-looking dataset of EV adoption, EV charging, and managed charging resource. Vehicle-level data are grounded in current adoption and charging patterns, and ~200,000 real-world vehicle-weeks of travel data covering all on-road segments (i.e., light-duty, transit and school buses, local, regional and long-haul medium- and heavy-duty). The data, which include multiple charging profiles per vehicle to bound flexibility, are then processed and aggregated to describe baseline charging and charge management resource by county, hour, year, scenario, and vehicle type. Coupled with one of four scenarios of how EV managed charging costs might evolve over time, the dataset enables a power sector capacity expansion model to select cost-optimal quantities of EV managed charging and supply-side resources to reliably satisfy demand. Five integration strategies: Baseline, Daytime and Flat (passive), Flex (active), and Stress (anti-strategy), illustrate how baseline charging and flexibility potential changes with EVSE build-out and charging preferences.

Single-Phase to Split-Phase Inverters with Advanced Grid Support Functions for Grid-Interactive Applications

This work presents a cost-effective single-phase to split-phase inverter with a reduced switch count, achieving grid interactive performance while maintaining operational efficiency. The proposed system integrates an Andronov-Hopf oscillator based secondary controller, which inherently embeds a nonlinear resistive droop architecture, ensuring rapid dynamic response. A Lyapunov energy function-based primary control enhances transient stability and regulation, while an internal model-based point of common coupling voltage estimation enables cost optimization without additional sensors. Equipped with advanced grid support functionalities, the inverter facilitates seamless distribution system operation with enhanced robustness. The effectiveness of the proposed architecture and control strategy is validated through MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS simulations, demonstrating its feasibility for high-performance grid-supportive applications.

Minimal Energy Routing of a Leader and a Wingmate with Periodic Connectivity

We consider a route planning problem in which two unmanned vehicles are required to complete a set of tasks present at distinct locations, referred to as targets, with minimum energy consumption. The mission environment is hazardous, and to ensure a safe operation, the UVs are required to communicate with each other at every target they visit. The problem objective is to determine the allocation of the tasks to the UVs and plan tours for the UVs to visit the targets such that the weighted sum of the distances traveled by the UVs and the distances traveled by the communicating signals between them is minimized. We formulate this problem as an Integer program and show that naively solving the problem using commercially available off-the-shelf solvers is insufficient in determining scalable solutions efficiently. To address this computational challenge, we develop an approximation and a heuristic algorithm, and employ them to compute high-quality solutions to a special case of the problem where equal weights are assigned to the distances traveled by the vehicles and the communicating signals. For this special case, we show that the approximation algorithm has a fixed approximation ratio of 3.75. We also develop lower bounds to the optimal cost of the problem to evaluate the performance of these algorithms on large-scale instances. We demonstrate the performance of these algorithms on 500 randomly generated instances with the number of targets ranging from 6 to 100, and show that the algorithms provide high-quality solutions to the problem swiftly; the average computation time of the algorithmic solutions is within a fraction of a second for instances with at most 100 targets. Finally, we show that the approximation ratio has a variable ratio for the weighted case of the problem. Specifically, if ρ denotes the ratio of the weights assigned to the distances representing the communication and travel costs, the algorithm has an a posteriori ratio of $3 + \frac{3ρ}{4}$ when ρ ≥ 1, and $\frac{3}{ρ}$ + $\frac{3}{4}$ when ρ ≤ 1.

Predictive Analytics for Hydropower Fleet Intelligence

A primary challenge in hydropower industry is the ability to maintain cost-competitiveness, reliability, and security of hydropower assets through evolving power system contexts and aging of the fleet. Maintaining cost-effective and reliable operations under these conditions is expected to require new modernization and maintenance paradigms for changing contexts. Changes in existing practices for O&M will require an understanding of the current state and health of hydropower assets, and the impact of changing paradigms on asset health and reliability. The Hydropower Fleet Intelligence project is developing and evaluating standardized methodologies and analysis tools for data-driven asset reliability and management technologies for hydropower, leading to eventual predictive maintenance planning, repair/replacement decision making, and asset-reliability and cost-optimized operations. A key question is the feasibility of using existing data sets at hydropower facilities to perform assessments of asset reliability. This document uses data from hydropower facilities to assess the potential for using available analytics methods for asset reliability estimates. In addition to reliability assessments, the feasibility of using existing analytics techniques for several other potential applications is discussed. Finally, a case study that a data-driven model is trained to learn nominal operations via vibration data from an asset of a certain plant, and then utilized to identify anomalies on a similar asset from a different plant, highlighting the generic use of proposed Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) approaches.

Optimization of spacecraft high temperature outgassing duration

Spacecraft systems are baked-out under vacuum to remove occluded and adsorbed gases, solvents, water, plasticizer, and other materials acquired during their manufacture. Two bakeouts of solar panels were carried out. Quartz crystal microbalances installed in the vacuum chamber during the tests and held at 273 K (0 C) provided an ongoing measure of the panels' outgassing. From these data, the panels' material weight losses versus time were obtained. A comparison of the total weight loss expected during a relatively long bakeout with that accomplished during a reasonable period of time was used as a criteria for an acceptable duration of the bakeout in order to optimize cost effectiveness.

Statistical estimation of service cracks and maintenance cost for aircraft structures

A method is developed for the statistical estimation of the number of cracks to be repaired in service as well as the repair and the maintenance costs. The present approach accounts for the statistical distribution of the initial crack size, the statistical nature of the NDI technique used for detecting the crack, and the renewal process for the crack propagation of repaired cracks. The mean and the standard deviation of the cumulative number of cracks to be repaired are computed as a function of service time. The statistics of the costs of repair and maintenance, expressed in terms of the percentage of the cost of replacement, are estimated as a function of service time. The results of the present study provide relevant information for the decision of fleet management, the estimation of life cycle cost, and procurement specifications. The present study is essential to the design and cost optimization of aircraft structures.
