Investigation of a high-temperature combination heat pump for lower-cost electrification in multifamily buildings

The development of space and water heating combination heat pumps capable of generating water temperatures high enough for convective heat emitters will enable more cost-effective and equitable decarbonization solutions for electrifying multifamily buildings. Here, in this paper, multifamily building models and a charge-sensitive mechanistic cycle model of a combination heat pump are developed, and the system performance is predicted based on the models. Unlike other state-of-the-art residential heat pumping equipment, the modeled combination heat pump using an economized, fluid-injected variable-speed compressor can achieve higher temperature lifts of 40° - 85°C, with lower installation costs and complexity. The model predicted heating coefficient of performance (COP h ) is 2.1 at an ambient temperature of -15°C with a high-temperature lift of nearly 85°C, and a seasonal coefficient of performance in heating mode (SCOP h ) ranges from 2 - 4 for different locations. The system shows 30% - 90% lower CO 2 eq emissions over a condensing gas boiler and 9% - 13% lower projected installation costs than two separate space and water heat pumping appliances.

Path Length Matching and Phase control for Coherently Combined Fiber Laser Arrays (1DPATH)

Coherently combined fiber lasers are literally the future of all lasers. Through coherent combining the high efficiency, ruggedness, and low cost of fiber lasers can be synthesized into any laser imaginable. Lasers of any wavelength, pulse characteristics, energy, average power, or beam output shape can be created through the coherent combination of a low cost base fiber laser. We now have the opportunity to move from traditional “Analog” lasers with their bulk optics, big optical benches, strict cleanliness requirements and high cost and fragility towards “Digital Lasers” where the output beams are shaped to provide characteristics like Orbital Angular Momentum to not only specify the traditional laser characteristics but also the output beam patterns as well. This will enable future applications such as Wakefield Accelerators, petawatt lasers, particle beam control, as well as Inertial Confinement Fusion Drivers and a host of other medical, scientific, and industrial uses.

Global Carbon Monoxide Products from Combined AIRS, TES and MLS Measurements on A-Train Satellites

This study tests a novel methodology to add value to satellite data sets. This methodology, data fusion, is similar to data assimilation, except that the background modelbased field is replaced by a satellite data set, in this case AIRS (Atmospheric Infrared Sounder) carbon monoxide (CO) measurements. The observational information comes from CO measurements with lower spatial coverage than AIRS, namely, from TES (Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer) and MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder). We show that combining these data sets with data fusion uses the higher spectral resolution of TES to extend AIRS CO observational sensitivity to the lower troposphere, a region especially important for air quality studies. We also show that combined CO measurements from AIRS and MLS provide enhanced information in the UTLS (upper troposphere/lower stratosphere) region compared to each product individually. The combined AIRS-TES and AIRS-MLS CO products are validated against DACOM (differential absorption mid-IR diode laser spectrometer) in situ CO measurements from the INTEX-B (Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment: MILAGRO and Pacific phases) field campaign and in situ data from HIPPO (HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations) flights. The data fusion results show improved sensitivities in the lower and upper troposphere (20-30% and above 20%, respectively) as compared with AIRS-only version 5 CO retrievals, and improved daily coverage compared with TES and MLS CO data.

Combining organic amendments with enhanced rock weathering shifts soil carbon storage in croplands

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) involves applying crushed silicate minerals to cropland soils to remove carbon dioxide and stabilize the global climate. If practiced widely, ERW has the potential to mitigate climate change and improve soil health and crop productivity. However, most ERW studies emphasize inorganic carbon (IC) chemistry, using model-based estimates and short-term mesocosms. Limited field data exist on how ERW interacts with organic amendments to affect organic carbon (C) cycling in soils. In a three-year field study in conventionally managed, irrigated maize fields, we monitored how key soil variables responded to crushed rock-alone, and in combination with compost and/or biochar. We measured weathering indicators (pH, major cations, and IC contents) and organic fractions, including particulate organic matter (POM), mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM), microbial biomass C, and water-extractable organic C. Rock-alone treatments increased weathering proxies (pH and IC) and showed an increasing trend in POM and MAOM, relative to control. In contrast, combining crushed rock with organic amendments resulted in lower soil organic C and nitrogen (N) concentrations (in both POM and MAOM) compared to organic amendments alone, though IC increased in the rock+compost treatment. Combining rock with both compost and biochar (compost/biochar) significantly lowered MAOM-N compared to compost/biochar alone. Overall, co-applying rock with organic inputs may promote weathering and C accrual but slow the accrual rate of organic C and N relative to organic amendments alone. Quantifying these trade-offs over multiple years and scales is critical to integrating ERW with existing soil health practices and climate mitigation strategies.

Online monitoring of lanthanide species with combined spectroscopy in flowing aqueous aerosol systems

Combined spectroscopic analysis through absorption and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to monitor Nd and Pr concentrations in a flowing aqueous system. A unique, online sampling approach was employed that allowed for an approximately closed analysis loop of liquids from a reservoir. Absorption spectroscopy was performed with an optical flow cell, and LIBS was performed on an aerosol stream. Multivariate calibrations based on combined absorption and LIBS signals were built for Nd and Pr and then used to monitor concentrations in mixed solutions in a series of spiking tests. In these tests, the concentrations of Nd and Pr in solution were intermittently changed while spectroscopic signals were monitored in real-time. The combined spectroscopic signals and multivariate models were successful in monitoring changing concentrations of lanthanide species with high accuracy and minimal latency. Root-mean squared error of predictions were 0.015 mol L −1 and 0.019 mol L −1 for Nd and Pr respectively, and these lanthanides were able to be monitored to an accuracy of < 0.2 wt%. This work demonstrates both the capabilities of a sampling system for online analysis of liquids and the capabilities of multimodal spectroscopic characterization for real-time, continuous tracking of species in potentially hazardous liquid systems.

Combined search for electroweak production of winos, binos, higgsinos, and sleptons in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A combination of the results of several searches for the electroweak production of the supersymmetric partners of standard model bosons, and of charged leptons, is presented. All searches use proton-proton collision data at s = 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of up to 137 fb − 1 . The results are interpreted in terms of simplified models of supersymmetry. Two new interpretations are added with this combination: a model spectrum with the bino as the lightest supersymmetric particle together with mass-degenerate Higgsinos decaying to the bino and a standard model boson, and the compressed-spectrum region of a previously studied model of slepton pair production. Improved analysis techniques are employed to optimize sensitivity for the compressed spectra in the wino and slepton pair production models. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model. The combination provides a more comprehensive coverage of the model parameter space than the individual searches, extending the exclusion by up to 125 GeV, and also targets some of the intermediate gaps in the mass coverage. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Systematic study of projection biases in the weak lensing analysis of cosmic shear and the combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing

This paper presents the results of a systematic study of projection biases in the weak lensing analysis of cosmic shear and the combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing using data collected during the first year of running the Dark Energy Survey experiment. The study uses Lambda cold dark matter ( Λ CDM ) as the cosmological model and two-point correlation functions for the weak lensing (WL) analysis. The results in this paper show that, independent of the WL analysis, projection biases of more than 1 σ exist and are a function of the position of the true values of the parameters h , n s , Ω b , and Ω ν h 2 with respect to their prior probabilities. For cosmic shear, and the combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing, this study shows that the coverage probability of the 68.27% credible intervals ranges from as high as 93% to as low as 16% and that these credible intervals are inflated, on average, by 29% for cosmic shear and 20% for the combination of galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing. The results of the study also show that, in six out of nine tested cases, the reduction in error bars obtained by transforming credible intervals into confidence intervals is equivalent to an increase in the amount of data by a factor of 3.

Combination of searches for singly produced vectorlike top quarks in 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A combination of searches for the single production of vectorlike top quarks (𝑇) is presented. These analyses are based on proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV recorded in 2015–2018 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb −1 . The 𝑇 decay modes considered in this combination are into a top quark and either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a 𝑍 boson (𝑇 → 𝐻⁡𝑡 and 𝑇 → 𝑍⁢𝑡). The individual searches used in the combination are differentiated by the number of leptons (𝑒, 𝜇) in the final state. The observed data are found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model background prediction. Interpretations are provided for a range of masses and couplings of the vectorlike top quark for benchmark models and generalized representations in terms of 95% confidence level limits. For a benchmark signal prediction of a vectorlike top quark SU(2) singlet with electroweak coupling, 𝜅, of 0.5, masses below 2.1 TeV are excluded, resulting in the most restrictive limits to date.

Combination of Measurements of the Top Quark Mass from Data Collected by the ATLAS and CMS Experiments at s = 7 and 8 TeV

A combination of fifteen top quark mass measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC is presented. The datasets used correspond to an integrated luminosity of up to 5 and 20 fb − 1 of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The combination includes measurements in top quark pair events that exploit both the semileptonic and hadronic decays of the top quark, and a measurement using events enriched in single top quark production via the electroweak t channel. The combination accounts for the correlations between measurements and achieves an improvement in the total uncertainty of 31% relative to the most precise input measurement. The result is m t = 172.52 ± 0.14 ( stat ) ± 0.30 ( syst ) GeV , with a total uncertainty of 0.33 GeV. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS and ATLASs Collaboration 2024 CERN

Statistical Combination of ATLAS Run 2 Searches for Charginos and Neutralinos at the LHC

Statistical combinations of searches for charginos and neutralinos using various decay channels are performed using 139 fb −1 of 𝑝⁢𝑝 collision data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Searches targeting pure-wino chargino pair production, pure-wino chargino-neutralino production, or Higgsino production decaying via standard model 𝑊, 𝑍, or ℎ bosons are combined to extend the mass reach to the produced supersymmetric particles by 30–100 GeV. The depth of the sensitivity of the original searches is also improved by the combinations, lowering the 95% C.L. cross-section upper limits by 15%–40%.

Beam combining of high-power terahertz lasers with semiconductor metasurface gratings

Spectral beam combining (SBC) of an array of single-mode lasers has the potential for realizing a chip-scale electrically tunable multispectral laser source without any moving parts and with emission at closely spaced discrete frequencies. Here, we demonstrate SBC of an array of single-mode THz quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs) with small frequency spacing. Semiconductor-based metasurface THz blazed gratings are developed for integration with QCLs in a compact cryocooler setup. Single-lobed beams of four QCLs emitting around 3.2 THz and spectrally separated by ~14 GHz are combined to achieve collinear propagation of spatially overlapped and collimated beams in the far field with ≲ 0.1° of pointing error. Peak optical power in the range 50–100 mW is detected from each of the QCLs after combining. The dense frequency spacing in our method provides a pathway to incorporate tens of QCLs on a chip to realize a high-power discretely tunable THz laser source for applications in THz spectroscopy.

The earth's gravitational field from the combination of satellite and terrestrial data

This paper reviews techniques and results in the combination of gravimetric and satellite data. The estimation of mean anomalies for use in combination studies is discussed with the location of current gravity material being described. Specific techniques for combination solutions are discussed for various models. These models include those where the gravitational field is represented by a set of potential coefficients, or by a set of discrete blocks distributed on the earth. The potential coefficient solutions compared are those of the SAO Standard Earth II and III, the Goddard Earth Model 4, and a solution by the author. These solutions are compared in terms of coefficients, undulation and anomaly differences, and implied anomaly degree variances. In addition, comparisons were made through terrestrial anomaly comparisons, astrogeodetic undulation comparisons, and orbit fitting tests.

Combined bending-torsion fatigue reliability of AISI 4340 steel shafting with K sub t = 2.34

Results generated by three, unique fatigue reliability research machines which can apply reversed bending loads combined with steady torque are presented. Six-inch long, AISI 4340 steel, grooved specimens with a stress concentration factor of 2.34 and R sub C 35/40 hardness were subjected to various combinations of these loads and cycled to failure. The generated cycles-to-failure and stress-to-failure data are statistically analyzed to develop distributional S-N and Goodman diagrams. Various failure theories are investigated to determine which one represents the data best. The effect of the groove and of the various combined bending-torsion loads on the S-N and Goodman diagrams are determined. Three design applications are presented. The third one illustrates the weight savings that may be achieved by designing for reliability.

Prediction of span loading of straight-wing/propeller combinations up to stall

A method is presented for calculating the spanwise lift distribution on straight-wing/propeller combinations. The method combines a modified form of the Prandtl wing theory with a realistic representation of the propeller slipstream distribution. The slipstream analysis permits calculations of the nonuniform axial and rotational slipstream velocity field of propeller/nacelle combinations. This nonuniform field was then used to calculate the wing lift distribution by means of the modified Prandtl wing theory. The theory was developed for any number of nonoverlapping propellers, on a wing with partial or full-span flaps, and is applicable throughout an aspect ratio range from 2.0 and higher. A computer program was used to calculate slipstream characteristics and wing span load distributions for a number of configurations for which experimental data are available, and favorable comparisons are demonstrated between the theoretical predictions and the existing data.

Combined-load stress-strain relationship for advanced fiber composites

It was demonstrated experimentally that only one test specimen is required to determine the combined-load stress-strain relationships of a given fiber composite system. These relationships were determined using a thin angle-plied laminate tube and subjecting it to a number of combined-loading conditions. The measured data obtained are compared with theoretical predictions. Some important considerations associated with such a test are identified, and the significance of combined-load stress-strain relationships in certain practical designs are discussed.
