Si-based materials for lithium-ion batteries IX: 70% surface-modified Si/C/polyethylene glycol-carbon black/lithiated polyacrylic acid electrode

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze a 70% Si/C-carbon black/polyethylene glycol/lithiated polyacrylic acid electrode fabricated at the Cell Analysis, Modeling, and Prototyping Facility (CAMP), Argonne National Laboratory. The spectra were obtained using incident monochromatic Al K α radiation at 1486.6 eV (0.834 01 nm). An initial survey spectrum together with O 1s, C 1s, and Si 2p are presented. A final survey scan was collected to ascertain the amount of beam-induced damage, which appears to be minimal. Finally, the spectra indicate the principal core level photoelectron and Auger electron signals with only minor copper and lithium signals and show the expected silicon-carbon species related to the surface modification process in addition to oxidized carbon and silicon due to atmospheric exposure as well as contributions related to the binder material.

A Sub-Threshold Low-Power Integrated Bandpass Filter for Highly-Integrated Spectrum Analyzers

Low-power analog filter banks provide frequency analysis with minimal power and space requirements, making them viable solutions for integrated remote audio- and vibration-sensing applications. Compared with their digital counterparts, analog filter banks are better suited to achieve the lower power consumption necessary for IoT applications. In this work, the design and implementation of a sub-threshold complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated low-power tunable bandpass filter channel for signal spectrum analysis and signal discrimination is presented, including performance improvements to stability and precise matching between filter stages. The 8 th -order filter channel achieves an effective Q-factor of 4.5 and dynamic range of 60 dB, has an operational frequency range from 2 kHz to 100 kHz, and consumes 256 µW nominally at the highest center frequency. An integrated analog Gm-C filter topology is selected for this application. Functionally, the high-Q bandpass filter transfer function is implemented via four cascaded 2 nd -order filter cells and is fabricated in 130-nm 1.2-V CMOS technology, making it suitable for use in monolithic integrated spectral analysis (MISA) applications.

Design and fabrication of TiO 2 -based dye sensitized solar cells using plant-derived organic dyes

The utilization of solar energy, an abundant and renewable resource, shows great promise. Various technologies have been employed to capture this vast energy potential. In this study, the effectiveness of natural dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was explored through experimental and computational methods. Organic dyes derived from specific plant species were examined, with a solvent mixture of ethanol, methanol, and tetrahydrofuran used for extraction. A UV–vis spectrophotometer was utilized to measure the sensitizers’ optical characteristics. The study employed density functional theory (DFT), implemented in Gaussian 09 W software, to perform computational calculations. The B3LYP method and a basis set of 6-31G++(d,p) were chosen for optimizing the geometries and energetics of dye molecules. The DFT results indicated that the dye molecules had a bandgap in the range of 2.16–2.38 eV. The photochemical performance of all four fabricated DSSC-based devices was evaluated to be between 0.33% and 1.04%, and the Euryops pectinatus sensitizer demonstrated the highest efficiency of 1.04% among the studied sensitizers.

Lithium–Sulfur Batteries: 3D Printed Tools and Assembly Techniques for Repeatable Lab-Scale Coin Cell Manufacturing

The coin cell form factor has become a standard in energy storage research owing to its relatively low cost, low quantity of requisite electroactive material, fast experimental turnover, and capability to generate publishable quality data. Coin cell assembly at the lab-scale requires precise manual alignment of the many internal components of a cell to yield a properly functioning device. Truly repeatable device assembly presents a significant challenge to the acquisition of reliable data. In this report, we present a three-dimensional (3D) printable design for a coin cell alignment device and describe techniques for a generalized workflow to achieve reproducible coin cell assembly of lithium-based batteries. Standardized assembly techniques using readily accessible, purpose-built tools were demonstrated for labscale production of lithium−sulfur (Li−S) coin cells. Li−S batteries fabricated using the alignment device as well as conductive adhesive incorporated workflows afforded coin cells with up to 35% reduction of assembly times, comparable or better functional cell yields, and improved electrochemical device performance with more consistent and up to 150 mAh/g higher average discharge capacities coupled with Coulombic efficiency increases of up to 2.0% over manually aligned cell assembly techniques.

Molecular Interaction Regulates the Performance and Longevity of Defect Passivation for Metal Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Defect passivation constitutes one of the most commonly used strategies to fabricate highly efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the durability of the passivation effects under harsh operational conditions has not been extensively studied regardless of the weak and vulnerable secondary bonding between the molecular passivation agents and perovskite crystals. Here, we incorporated strategically designed passivating agents to investigate the effect of their interaction energies on the perovskite crystals and correlated these with the performance and longevity of the passivation effects. We unraveled that the passivation agents with a stronger interaction energy are advantageous not only for effective defect passivation but also to suppress defect migration. The prototypical PSCs treated with the optimal passivation agent exhibited superior performance and operational stability, retaining 81.9 and 85.3% of their initial performance under continuous illumination or nitrogen at 85 °C after 1008 h, respectively, while the reference device completely degraded during that time. Furthermore, this work provides important insights into designing operationally durable defect passivation agents for perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Monolithic Two-Terminal All-Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells with Power Conversion Efficiency Exceeding 21%

Monolithic two-terminal (2-T) all-perovskite tandem solar cells are a promising candidate for the next generation solar cells with ultrahigh efficiency and low fabrication cost. Here, we report on the fabrication of 2-T all-perovskite tandem solar cells consisting of solution-processed wide-bandgap and low-bandgap perovskite subcells connected by a vacuum processed interconnection layer. We employed a bulk-passivation strategy to enlarge the grain size, increase carrier mobilities, reduce electronic disorder, and suppress trap-assisted recombination in the low bandgap mixed Sn-Pb perovskite films, which leads to improved performance of low bandgap perovskite solar cells with an absorber thickness over 750 nm. This advance in high-quality low-bandgap perovskite layers enables the fabrication of efficient 2-T all-perovskite solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of more than 21% and decent stability. Our approach provides a suitable pathway to realize ultra-high efficiency 2-T all-perovskite tandem solar cells.

Cobalt-Free Cathodes for Next Generation Li-Ion Batteries

In this U.S. Department of Energy sponsored project Nexceris, in collaboration with project partners; The Ohio State University and Navitas Advanced Systems have advanced the technical maturity of a non-cobalt containing cathode for next-generation Li-ion batteries. The cathode is based on the lithium manganese nickel-titanium oxide, LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 TiO 4 (LNMTO) high voltage spinel. To address limitations with poor cycle and calendar life an microstucturally hierarchical LNMO/LNMTO core-shell cathode powder has been developed that enables the formation of a solid-electrolyte interface that effectively passivates the cathode surface. The microstructural enhancements of the cathode material focus on preferentially enriching the surface with titanium. In parallel, new, optimized binder and electrolyte chemistries have been incorporated to address degradation mechanisms associated with high-voltage systems. Single-layer pouch cell and large-format 2-Ah cell testing have shown that an optimized LNMO/LNMTO core-shell powder significantly improves initial cell capacity and cycle life compared to homogeneous LNMO powder. To support development and the fabrication of 2-Ah cells a novel Hybrid Alternative Wet-Chemical Synthesis (HAWCS) process have been developed. This low-cost, synthesis approach enables the excellent compositional and particle morphology control achieved with co-precipitation without the strict process controls and associated expensive process equipment.

High-Rate and Low-Temperature Fabrication of Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 Solar Cells Using AgBr Induced Recrystallization

We present results demonstrating a three-stage, high-rate, low-temperature deposition process for Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 solar cells including a recrystallization step after the second stage, catalyzed by AgBr. The entire deposition and recrystallization process takes place below 450 °C in less than 15 min. Device results with efficiencies exceeding 16% are shown. Here, we achieve very high levels of grain growth and a greater than a 5% absolute increase in device performance because of the recrystallization step relative to an identical process not involving AgBr.

Arsenic Doping of Polycrystalline CdSeTe Devices for Microsecond Life-times with High Carrier Concentrations

We report seminal advances in fabrication and understanding of group V (As) doped thin-film polycrystalline CdTe-based solar cells. The devices are fabricated using a novel approach, by sublimating layers of CdSeTe and CdSeTe:As. This new method allowed us to achieve minority carrier lifetime of over 1 μs, carrier concentration of more than 5×l0 15 cc -1 and external radiative efficiency of over 2 % in a device configuration. We find an increase in open-circuit voltage when comparing As-doped, Cu-doped and undoped devices. The choice of CdSeTe instead of a CdTe-only absorber has been explained using first-principle density functional theory model. A SCAPS device model is used to analyze the potential causes for lower open-circuit voltage.

Methods for fabricating thin film III-V compound solar cell

The present invention utilizes epitaxial lift-off in which a sacrificial layer is included in the epitaxial growth between the substrate and a thin film III-V compound solar cell. To provide support for the thin film III-V compound solar cell in absence of the substrate, a backing layer is applied to a surface of the thin film III-V compound solar cell before it is separated from the substrate. To separate the thin film III-V compound solar cell from the substrate, the sacrificial layer is removed as part of the epitaxial lift-off. Once the substrate is separated from the thin film III-V compound solar cell, the substrate may then be reused in the formation of another thin film III-V compound solar cell.

Ultrarapid crystallization of low-dimensional perovskite with excellent stability for future high-throughput fabrication

We report perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as an emerging photovoltaic technique have achieved exceptional power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 25.7% after fast development over the past decade. But currently some critical issues are still not well addressed in terms of realizing large-scale fabrication, for example, fast fabrication of high-quality perovskite film with good stability. Here, we demonstrate the use of stable and fast-crystallizing low-dimensional (LD) perovskite thin films as the light absorber with only a 10 s annealing time at 250 °C, delivering a PCE of 18.16%. The crystallization and photoelectric properties of LD perovskite are well illustrated. The reduction in the annealing time will dramatically increase the productivity of PSCs. The PSCs based on rapidly annealed LD perovskite thin films exhibit excellent stability, with only 12% loss of PCE after 1000 h storage at 85 °C and 40-70% relative humidity.
