Inclusive and differential cross section measurements of $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $ production in the lepton+jets channel at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Measurements of inclusive and normalized differential cross sections of the associated production of top quark-antiquark and bottom quark-antiquark pairs, $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $, are presented. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The cross sections are measured in the lepton+jets decay channel of the top quark pair, using events containing exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least five jets. Measurements are made in four fiducial phase space regions, targeting different aspects of the $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}} $ process. Distributions are unfolded to the particle level through maximum likelihood fits, and compared with predictions from several event generators. The inclusive cross section measurements of this process in the fiducial phase space regions are the most precise to date. In most cases, the measured inclusive cross sections exceed the predictions with the chosen generator settings. The only exception is when using a particular choice of dynamic renormalization scale, $ {\mu}_{\textrm{R}}=\frac{1}{2}{\prod}_{i=\textrm{t},\overline{\textrm{t}},\textrm{b},\overline{\textrm{b}}}{m}_{\textrm{T},i}^{1/4} $, where $ {m}_{\textrm{T},i}^2={m}_i^2+{p}_{\textrm{T},i}^2 $ are the transverse masses of top and bottom quarks. The differential cross sections show varying degrees of compatibility with the theoretical predictions, and none of the tested generators with the chosen settings simultaneously describe all the measured distributions.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurement of the cross section of top quark pairs produced in association with a Photon in Lepton +Jets events at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with full Run II CMS data

The inclusive production cross section of top quark pairs in association with a photon is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC with 13 TeV energy using the full RunII data collected by CMS in 2016, 2017, and 2018 with a total corresponding integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$. The relative fraction of t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ events normalized to inclusive t$ \bar{t}$ production is measured. The cross section measurement provides important information about the electromagnetic coupling of the standard model top quark and is sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. The analysis is carried out in the in semileptonic decay channel with a well isolated high P$ \_{T}$ lepton (electron and muon), at least four jets out of which at least one must be b-tagged, and an isolated photon. Photons may be emitted from initial state radiation, top quarks, and decay products of top quarks. The fiducial phase space with a photon of transverse momentum $ \ge$ 20 GeV and j\x11$ \eta$ <1.4441 is used. A simultaneous likelihood fit of control regions with the signal region is done to constraint the backgrounds and to extract the t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ cross section. The measurement of the ratio of t$ \bar{t} \gamma$ to t$ \bar{t}$ is $0.02055 \pm 0.00099$ (syst.) $ \pm 0.00099$ (stat.) in $e$ channel , 0.02156 $ \pm$ 0.00068 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.00068 (stat.) in $ \mu$ channel , and 0.02203 $ \pm$ 0.00064 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.00064 (stat.) in e + $ \mu$ channel , respectively. The measured inclusive cross section is 3.81 $ \pm$ 0.15 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.10 (stat.) pb in e channel , 3.87 $ \pm$ 0:11 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0:07 (stat.) pb in $ \mu$ channel , and 3.96 $ \pm$ 0.10 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.06 (stat.) pb in e + $ \mu$ channel , respectively for full RunII data. The total inclusive cross section with a photon of transverse momentum $ \ge$ 20 GeV is found to be 3.96 $ \pm$ 0.10 (syst.) $ \pm$ 0.06 (stat.) pb with full RunII CMS data. The results are in agreement with the standard model next to leading order prediction.

Double-pion electroproduction off protons in deuterium: Quasifree cross sections and final-state interactions

Here, the single-differential and fully integrated cross sections for quasi-free $π^+π^-$ electroproduction off protons bound in deuterium have been extracted for the first time. The experimental data were collected at Jefferson Laboratory with the CLAS detector. The measurements were performed in the kinematic region of the invariant mass W from 1.3 GeV to 1.825 GeV and photon virtuality Q 2 from 0.4 GeV2 to 1.0 GeV 2 . Sufficient experimental statistics allow for narrow binning in all kinematic variables, while maintaining a small statistical uncertainty. The extracted cross sections were compared with the corresponding cross sections off free protons, which allowed us to obtain an estimate of the contribution from events in which interactions between the final-state hadrons and the spectator neutron took place.

Measurements of $\overline{\nu}_{\mu}$ and $\overline{\nu}_{\mu} + \nu_{\mu}$ charged-current cross-sections without detected pions or protons on water and hydrocarbon at a mean anti-neutrino energy of 0.86 GeV

We report measurements of the flux-integrated $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ and $\overline{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced $\mu^\pm$ and no detected charged pion or proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton Module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, $p_{\mu}>400~{\rm MeV}/c$ and $\theta_{\mu}<30^{\circ}$, in the laboratory frame. An absence of pions and protons in the detectable phase spaces of $p_{\pi}>200~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\pi}<70^{\circ}$ and $p_{\rm p}>600~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\rm p}<70^{\circ}$ is required. In this paper, both the $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ cross-sections and $\overline{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets and their ratios are provided by using the D’Agostini unfolding method. The results of the integrated $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ cross-section measurements over this phase space are $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}=(1.082\pm0.068(\rm stat.)^{+0.145}_{-0.128}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, $\sigma_{\rm CH}=(1.096\pm0.054(\rm stat.)^{+0.132}_{-0.117}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, and $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}/\sigma_{\rm CH} = 0.987\pm0.078(\rm stat.)^{+0.093}_{-0.090}(\rm syst.)$. The $\overline{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ cross-section is $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O} = (1.155\pm0.064(\rm stat.)^{+0.148}_{-0.129}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, $\sigma_{\rm CH}=(1.159\pm0.049(\rm stat.)^{+0.129}_{-0.115}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, and $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}/\sigma_{\rm CH}=0.996\pm0.069(\rm stat.)^{+0.083}_{-0.078}(\rm syst.)$.

MEASURING CLAS12 D(E, E′Π±) CROSS SECTIONS FOR E4NU

Neutrino experiments need neutrino event generators such as GENIE to simulate neutrinonucleus (¿A) interactions in order to measure neutrino oscillations. We need eA data to validate GENIE. GENIE d(e, e') cross sections do not match data in the pion production region. Further analysis of this region can help constrain GENIE models. The goal of this project was to compare 4.244 GeV CLAS12 d(e, e'p±) cross sections to GENIE predictions. We analyzed data from the Fall 2019 run period of Run Group B (RG-B). We applied particle identification, fiducial, and vertex cuts on electron and charged pion candidates. We compared the measured data with events generated with GENIE and another generator called onepigen. We used onepigen to simulate single charged pion production and to calculate radiative corrections for the data. We submitted GENIE and onepigen events to the GEant4 Monte-Carlo (GEMC) simulation of CLAS12 and applied the same cuts we used on the data. We plotted cross sections as functions of W and binned the events in Q2, ¿pq, and Pp. We used 2D (Q2), 3D (Q2 with ¿pq or Pp), and 4D (Q2, ¿pq, and Pp) binning schemes. We found GENIE describes d(e, e'p±) cross sections better than expected. GENIE describes the data remarkably well in the 2D bins and some 3D and 4D bins. There are many discrepancies between GENIE and data in the other 3D and 4D bins. The results show that, relative to data, GENIE cross sections increase as Q2 increases, decrease as Pp increases, and fit best at low ¿pq. These results will help guide improvements to GENIE in order to reduce the systematic uncertainties in neutrino-oscillation experiments.

Measurement of Electron-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on 127 I with the COHERENT NaI$ν$E Detector

Using an 185-kg NaI[Tl] array, COHERENT has measured the inclusive electron-neutrino chargedcurrent cross section on 127 I with pion decay-at-rest neutrinos produced by the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Iodine is one the heaviest targets for which low-energy (≤ 50 MeV) inelastic neutrino-nucleus processes have been measured, and this is the first measurement of its inclusive cross section. After a five-year detector exposure, COHERENT reports a flux-averaged cross section for electron neutrinos of ${9.2}_{–1.8}^{+2.1}$ × 10 –40 cm 2 . This corresponds to a value that is ~41% lower than predicted using the MARLEY event generator with a measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution. In addition, the observed visible spectrum from charged-current scattering on 127 I has been measured between 10 and 55 MeV, and the exclusive zero-neutron and one-or-more-neutron emission cross sections are measured to be ${5.2}_{–3.1}^{+3.4}$ × 10 –40 and ${2.2}_{—2.2}^{+3.5}$ × 10 –40 cm 2 , respectively.

Measurement of the $\bar ν_μ-$Hydrogen Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic Cross Section using the NOvA Near Detector

We report a measurement of the total cross section for muon antineutrino charged-current quasi-elastic scattering on hydrogen, $\bar ν_μ{\rm H} \to μ^+ n$, in the NOvA near detector using a $1.2\times10^{21}$ proton-on-target exposure in the NuMI beam. A selection based on topological and kinematic constraints yields 35,509 signal events in the hydrogen-rich ($10.8\%$) detector, providing the highest statistics of (anti)neutrino--hydrogen interactions measured to date. Backgrounds from (anti)neutrino interactions on heavier nuclei are constrained using dedicated data control samples, significantly reducing the related systematic uncertainties. We obtain a value $σ(\bar ν_μ{\rm H} \to μ^+ n) = 0.538 \pm 0.009 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.010 ({\rm syst}) \pm0.055 ({\rm flux}) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ for the total cross section at an average energy of 1.9 GeV, the most precise total cross-section measurement of this process to date. The combined statistical and non-flux systematic uncertainty is more than four times smaller than the flux uncertainty, allowing a future use of this measurement to constrain the absolute $\bar ν_μ$ flux.

Cross Section Measurements of Photonuclear Reaction Pathways Towards Promising Medical Radioisotopes

Project Objectives: The goal of this project was to generate data relevant to radioisotope production while developing innovative technologies that foster and enhance novel production of radioisotopes, and, also, while providing opportunities for cultivating and training future generations of scientists. This work has provided the foundation for methodologies for determination of photonuclear cross sections over multiple energies in a single irradiation. Simultaneously, the feasibility of electron LINAC production of several in-demand radioisotopes such as 47 Sc, 67 Cu, 77 As, and 186 Re has been demonstrated. To accomplish these objectives a collaboration was formed between two complimentary facilities, the Low Energy Accelerator Facility (LEAF) at Argonne National Laboratory and the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HIGS) at Triangular Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The involvement of the research group from North Carolina Central University gave students at this Historically Black University experience in forefront nuclear-physics research relevant to addressing a high-priority interdisciplinary issue. Project Description: HIGS provides a nearly monoenergetic gamma-ray beam by intra-cavity Compton backscattering of free-electron photons from electrons circulating in a storage ring. This beam can be collimated to produce a very precise energy beam. If the beam is un-collimated a calculated and precise energy spread of the beam occurs radially. The γ-flux can be evenly distributed over the radial distribution of energy and used to perform activation experiments on concentric ring targets. Thus providing multiple energy ranges in a single irradiation. Each concentric ring target can be counted separately in order to determine activation at the given energy and successively be correlated to the activation cross section. Targets were activated to determine production feasibility using electron beams at LEAF. Potential Impact: The Nuclear Science Advisory Committee recently named production of radioisotopes with electron LINACs as one of the most compelling and largest-impact opportunities for the production of high specific activity radioisotopes. Improving the photonuclear cross sectional data base with experimentally verified results will greatly enhance a researcher’s ability to rationalize electron LINAC production routes towards desired radioisotopes. This work will provide the foundation for methodologies for determination of photonuclear cross sections over multiple energies and multiple targets in a single irradiation. The techniques developed in this project will enable future studies to continue verifying theoretically predicted photonuclear cross section with experimental results. These data will also enable adaptation of models and support more precise theoretical calculation of photonuclear cross sections. This research will involve undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs to give them a valuable research experience leading towards the next generation of scientists in the field of medical isotopes.

First Simultaneous Measurement of Differential Muon-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon for Final States with and without Protons Using MicroBooNE Data

We report the first double-differential neutrino-argon cross section measurement made simultaneously for final states with and without protons for the inclusive muon neutrino charged-current interaction channel. The proton kinematics of this channel are further explored with a differential cross section measurement as a function of the leading proton’s kinetic energy that extends across the detection threshold. These measurements use data collected with the MicroBooNE detector from 6.4 × 10 20 protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of ∼ 0.8 GeV . Extensive data-driven model validation utilizing the conditional constraint formalism is employed. This motivates enlarging the uncertainties with an empirical reweighting approach to minimize the possibility of extracting biased cross section results. The extracted nominal flux-averaged cross sections are compared to widely used event generator predictions revealing severe mismodeling of final states without protons for muon neutrino charged-current interactions, possibly from insufficient treatment of final state interactions. These measurements provide a wealth of new information useful for improving event generators which will enhance the sensitivity of precision measurements in neutrino experiments. Measurement of the near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction cross section with the CLAS12 experiment

We present measurements of the total and differential cross sections for near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction obtained with the CLAS12 detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The results are based on data collected during the fall 2018 and spring 2019 running periods, using electron beams with energies of 10.6 and 10.2 GeV, respectively, scattered off a liquid-hydrogen target. Near-threshold 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction offers a unique sensitivity to the strong interaction in the nonperturbative regime of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The energy dependence of the cross section constrains the underlying 𝐽/𝜓 production mechanisms, including multigluon exchange and potential baryonic excitations. Additionally, the 𝑡 dependence of the differential cross section can be related to the transverse spatial distribution of gluons in the proton, providing critical input for theoretical descriptions of the gluonic structure of the proton. An interpretation of the results in terms of the gluon content of the proton is presented, providing new experimental constraints on QCD-inspired models of the proton structure and the role of gluonic degrees of freedom in hadronic mass generation.

Measurements of the 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) and 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) Cross-Section Ratios Using Quasi-Monoenergetic Neutron Beams

Neutron-induced fission cross-section ratio measurements were carried out at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) over multiple experiment campaigns from 2021-2023. The total beam time for these measurements across all the experimental campaigns was approximately three weeks. This work was intended to serve as an independent validation of the fissionTPC cross-section ratio measurements. In contrast to the white spectrum neutron source and time-projection chamber utilized in the fissionTPC, these measurements utilized pulsed, quasi-monoenergetic neutron beams and fission ionization chambers. Therefore, this work has different sources of systematic error and can be used as a complementary measurement. In this report we describe our fission cross-section ratio measurements, analysis, results and provide a detailed uncertainty budget.

Experimental spectrum averaged cross sections (SACS) in 252 Cf(sf) neutron field and its impact on the evaluation of neutron standards

A new evaluation of spectrum averaged cross sections (SACS) of 235 U, 238 U, and 239 Pu measured in the 252 Cf(sf) reference neutron field is presented and found to be consistent with the original Mannhart SACS evaluation in IRDF-2002. The comprehensive vetted experimental database that includes SACS ratio and absolute SACS measurements of major actinides is being used to update the SACS database employed as input of the new GMApy code to derive the Neutron Standards. An update of the current neutron standards based on Time Projection Chamber (TPC) shape data, a new comprehensive uncertainty quantification, and revised SACS experimental database is proposed which result in a 0.7% increase of the evaluated 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) crosssection ratio in the 1–5 MeV energy region. The increase is due to a 0.3% reduction of the standard 235 U(n,f) cross section and a 0.4% increase of the 239 Pu(n,f) reference cross section in the 1–5 MeV energy region. Those changes are well within estimated USU fission cross-section uncertainties of 1.2%, but are relevant for the evaluated mean values.

Damage Pseudo Cross Section Generator

This software is a python script for generating group damage pseudo-cross-sections for specific elements, and tabulating them in forms useful to python or to office-open workbooks (xlsx). The damage pseudo-cross-section is needed for calculating how much neutron radiation damage a structural material receives in a reactor measured in displacements per atom (DPA). The process of generating these pseudo-cross-sections is laborious as it requires running the nuclear data processing code, NJOY, for hundreds of isotopes, and then post-processing the data. This also allows many opportunities for human error to be involved. This script eliminates these problems by fully automating the process.

Machine learning assisted unfolding for neutrino cross-section measurements with the OmniFold technique

The choice of unfolding method for a cross-section measurement is tightly coupled to the model dependence of the efficiency correction and the overall impact of cross-section modeling uncertainties in the analysis. A key issue is the dimensionality used in unfolding, as the kinematics of all outgoing particles in an event typically affect the reconstruction performance in a neutrino detector. OmniFold is an unfolding method that iteratively reweights a simulated dataset, using machine learning to utilize arbitrarily high-dimensional information, that has previously been applied to proton-proton and proton-electron datasets. This paper demonstrates OmniFold’s application to a neutrino cross-section measurement for the first time using a public T2K near detector simulated dataset, comparing its performance with traditional approaches using a mock data study.

First Observation of Large Missing-Momentum (e,e'p) Cross-Section Scaling and the onset of Correlated-Pair Dominance in Nuclei

We report the first measurement of $x_B$-scaling in $(e,e'p)$ cross-section ratios off nuclei relative to deuterium at large missing-momentum of $350 \leq p_{miss} \leq 600$ MeV/c. The observed scaling extends over a kinematic range of $0.7 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$, which is significantly wider than $1.4 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$ previously observed for inclusive $(e,e')$ cross-section ratios. The $x_B$-integrated cross-section ratios become constant (i.e., scale) beginning at $p_{miss}\approx k_F$, the nuclear Fermi momentum. Comparing with theoretical calculations we find good agreement with Generalized Contact Formalism calculations for high missing-momentum ($> 375$ MeV/c), suggesting the observed scaling results from interacting with nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. For low missing-momenta, mean-field calculations show good agreement with the data for $p_{miss}\le k_F$, and suggest that contributions to the measured cross-section ratios from scattering off single, un-correlated, nucleons are non-negligible up to $p_{miss}\approx 350$ MeV/c. Therefore, SRCs become dominant in nuclei at $p_{miss}\approx 350$ MeV/c, well above the nuclear Fermi Surface of $k_F \approx 250$ MeV/c.

Measurement of three-dimensional inclusive muon-neutrino charged-current cross sections on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We report the measurement of the triple-differential cross section d 3 σ/dE vis d cos(θ μ )dP μ for inclusive muon-neutrino charged-current scattering on argon. This measurement utilizes data from 6.4 x 10 20 protons on target of exposure collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located along the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. The mapping from reconstructed kinematics to truth quantities is validated within uncertainties by comparing the distribution of reconstructed hadronic energy in data to that of the model prediction in different muon scattering angle bins after applying a conditional constraint from the muon momentum distribution in data. The success of this validation provides confidence that the energy transfer in the MicroBooNE detector is well-modeled within simulation uncertainties, enabling a reliable unfolding to a triple-differential cross section defined at the nominal neutrino flux over muon momentum, muon scattering angle, and visible neutrino energy. This validation not only supports accurate cross-section extraction, but also establishes a critical foundation for tuning interaction models used in future neutrino oscillation measurements. The unfolded measurement covers an extensive phase space, providing a wealth of information useful for future liquid argon time projection chamber experiments measuring neutrino oscillations. Comparisons against a number of commonly used model predictions are included and their performance in different parts of the available phase-space is discussed.

First Muon Neutrino on Argon Cross Section Measurements With an Off-Axis Beam

While over ninety years have passed since neutrinos were first predicted in 1930 by Wolfgang Pauli, much about them is still unknown [20]. How many types of neutrinos there are, how precisely neutrinos change flavor, and how neutrinos interact with various types of matter are largely unanswered questions that have implications for fields beyond particle physics, such as cosmology and astrophysics. The final question can be answered partially by differential cross section measurements, two of which constitute the primary result of this thesis. The NeUtrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) Beam at Fermilab in Batavia, IL provides a source of muon neutrinos and muon antineutrinos to the MicroBooNE experiment, an 85 ton liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC). The technology allows for high precision particle tracking and energy reconstruction that can be used to make cross section measurements. Necessary work for making these measurements for which the author of this thesis made an essential contribution is presented in detail in References [21] [22] [11] [23]. The measurement presented in this thesis is made with 2.187e20 Protons on Target (POT), the standard metric for an amount of beam exposure, of data when the beam was in forward horn current mode. Single-differential cross section measurements in terms of muon candidate kinetic energy and direction are made, and their statistical fits with simulation are 5.8 (12 d.o.f.) and 11.4 (10 d.o.f.), respectively. This indicates that the muon kinematics for muon neutrino and muon antineutrino charged-current (CC) events primarily in the energy range [0-3] GeV can be trusted for oscillation experiments, including DUNE, because of the agreement to within the associated systematic and statistical uncertainties between the measurement and the model in every bin of both single-differential cross sections. This result adds to the corresponding result for the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) because it covers a completely different energy region than that measurement, a double-differential cross section in terms of muon momentum and direction [14]. This result contributes to reducing the uncertainty in near-far event rate comparisons in long baseline neutrino experiments and also adds to existing knowledge of the neutrino-nucleus interaction by describing the outgoing muon kinematics in interactions of muon neutrinos and muon antineutrinos. This result is the first-ever measurement of differential cross sections of muon neutrinos and muon antineutrinos in liquid argon made with an off-axis beam.
