Translation of "Contribution a l'etude du diagramme pression-temperature du beryllium pur" (Contribution to the Study of the Pressure-Temperature Diagram of Pure Beryllium)

An unusual feature of beryllium’s phase diagram is the transition from a hexagonal close packed (hcp, or α) to a body-centered cubic (bcc, or β) structure ~20 K below the normal melting temperature of T melt ≈ 1560 K. An early thermal analysis of 99.7% pure Be found two arrests1 : one at 1533-1536 K and another at 1551-1557 K. Without ruling out an allotropic transformation in Be itself, Sloman attributed the first of these to solidification of a Be-BeO eutectic. Losano observed only the higher of the two in 99.962% Be, seeming to confirm the notion that the lower feature was an artifact of impurity. Teitel (99.4%) also measured two arrests and attributed the lower to impurity, but questioned whether oxygen was the culprit.

Green Button Extensibility Assessment

In September 2011, the federal government announced a “call to action” to create a mechanism to enable utility consumers to download their energy usage history from their utilities’ secure websites in a standardized electronic format. That effort was christened the Green Button initiative, drawing on the success of the Blue Button initiative delivered by the US Department of Defense in 2009 as a secure, online access mechanism to download patient health information through the TriCare online portal.

Bayesian Optimization of The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider Luminosity via s * Control

A state-of-the-art jet detector named sPHENIX was proposed, commissioned, and operated at the Rel ativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) from 2023 to 2025. This detector featured precision tracking and calorime try that enable high-statistics studies of the Quark Gluon Plasma through jet modification, upsilon suppres sion, and open heavy flavor production. The innermost component of the three sPHENIX tracking systems is the Monolithic-Active-Pixel-Sensor-based Vertex Detec tor (MVTX) (Fig. 1), which has an acceptance within | s | < 0.1m of the interaction point (IP).

Atmospheric Composition and Radiative Forcing Effects due to UN International Ship Emissions Regulations (ACRUISE) Field Campaign Report

Aerosols, or atmospheric particulates, are long known to be able to seed clouds and modify their characteristics (e.g., cloud brightness, coverage, lifetime). However, the impact of aerosols on clouds is highly complex and non-linear. As a result, aerosol-cloud interaction remains the largest uncertainty in our understanding of the Earth’s radiative balance and in any future climate projections. Aerosols are also a principal component of air pollution and are known to adversely affect respiratory and cardiovascular health.

Covalent integration of polymers and porous organic frameworks

Covalent integration of polymers and porous organic frameworks (POFs), including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), represent a promising strategy for overcoming the existing limitations of traditional porous materials. This integration allows for the combination of the advantages of polymers, i.e., flexibility, processability and chemical versatility etc., and the superiority of POFs, like the structural integrity, tunable porosity and the high surface area, creating a type of hybrid materials. These resulting polymer-POF hybrid materials exhibit enhanced mechanical strength, chemical stability and functional diversity, thus opening up new opportunities for applications across a large variety of fields, such as gas separation, catalysis, biomedical applications, environmental remediation and energy storage. In this review, an overview of synthetic routes and strategies on how to covalently integrate different polymers with various POFs is discussed, especially with a particular focus on methods like polymerization within, on and among POF structures. To investigate the unique properties and functions of these resultant hybrid materials, the characterization techniques, including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gas adsorption analysis (BET) and computational modeling and machine learning, are also presented. The ability of polymer-POFs to manipulate the pore environments at the molecular level affords these materials a wide range of applications, providing a versatile platform for future advancements in material science. Looking forward, to fully realize the potential of these hybrid materials, the authors highlight the scalability, green synthesis methods, and potential for stimuli-responsive polymer-POF materials as critical areas for future research.

Rare earth element enrichment in coal and coal-adjacent strata of the Uinta Region, Utah and Colorado

This study aims to quantify rare earth element enrichment within coal and coal-adjacent strata in the Uinta Region of central Utah and western Colorado. Rare earth elements are a subset of critical minerals as defined by the U.S. Geological Survey. These elements are used for a wide variety of applications, including renewable energy technology in the transition toward carbon-neutral energy. While rare earth element enrichment has been associated with Appalachian coals, there has been a more limited evaluation of western U.S. coals. Here, samples from six active mines, four idle/historical mines, four mine waste piles, and seven stratigraphically complete cores within the Uinta Region were geochemically evaluated using portable X-ray fluorescence ( n = 3,113) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry ( n = 145) elemental analytical methods. Results suggest that 24%–45% of stratigraphically coal-adjacent carbonaceous shale and siltstone units show rare earth element enrichment (>200 ppm), as do 100% of sampled igneous material. A small subset (5%–8%) of coal samples display rare earth element enrichment, specifically in cases containing volcanic ash. This study proposes two multi-step depositional and diagenetic models to explain the enrichment process, requiring the emplacement and mobilization of rare earth element source material due to hydrothermal and other external influences. Historical geochemical evaluations of Uinta Region coal and coal-adjacent data are sparse, emphasizing the statistical significance of this research. These results support the utilization of active mines and coal processing waste piles for the future of domestic rare earth element extraction, offering economic and environmental solutions to pressing global demands.

The Melt Enthalpy of Pu 6 Fe

Schwartz, et al., previously reported calorimetry measurements conducted on a Pu-Pu 6 Fe mixture, from which they derived a melt enthalpy of 31.2 J/g (46.6 kJ/mol) for Pu 6 Fe. This was the first—and remains the only—such value to appear in the literature. We reanalyze those results in light of two contributions to the measured heat flow not considered in the original report: the melt enthalpy of the excess Pu and the subsequent heating of the liquid mixture. These corrections yield a revised value of 24.4 J/g (36.3 kJ/mol), which we show to be consistent with the melt enthalpy of U 6 Fe.

Analysis on Evaluations of Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s Wave Energy Converter’s Field Data Using WEC-Sim and Gazebo: A Simulation Tool Comparison

Although many studies have validated wave energy converter (WEC) numerical models against scaled prototype experimental data, there remains a notable lack of validation using data from full-scale deployed WECs. This paper compares two numerical models of Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute’s Wave Energy Converter (MBARI-WEC), a two-body point absorber with an electro-hydraulic power take-off system (PTO). The models are implemented in WEC-Sim/Simscape and Gazebo Simulator. A statistical analysis of the models was performed, and field results were obtained to compare the models’ accuracy in predicting the RMS piston velocity, RMS motor speed, and mean electric power compared to field data for 56 observations across varying sea states. The Gazebo model demonstrated a closer agreement across all three parameters for a majority of the observations. When compared to the field data, the Gazebo and WEC-Sim models exhibited average mean electric power overestimations of 13% and 22%, respectively.

Real-Time Sea State Estimation for Wave Energy Converter Control via Machine Learning

Wave energy converters (WECs) harness the untapped power of ocean waves to generate renewable energy, offering a promising solution to sustainable energy. An optimal WEC control strategy is essential to maximize power capture that dynamically adjusts system parameters in response to rapidly changing sea states. This study presents a novel control approach that leverages neural networks to estimate sea states from onboard WEC measurements such as position, velocity, and force. Using a point absorber WEC device as a test platform, our proposed approach estimates sea states in real-time and subsequently adjusts PID controller gains to maximize energy extraction. Simulation results across diverse sea conditions demonstrate that our strategy eliminates the need for external wave monitoring equipment while maintaining power capture efficiency. The results show that our neural network-based control technique can improve power capture by 25.6% while significantly reducing system complexity. This approach offers a practical alternative for WEC deployments where direct wave measurements are either infeasible or cost prohibitive.
