Constraints on the normal branch of DGP gravity from SPT galaxy clusters with DES and HST weak-lensing mass calibration and from P l a n c k PR4 CMB anisotropies

We present constraints on the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) braneworld gravity model from the abundance of massive galaxy clusters. On scales below the nDGP crossover scale r c , the nDGP model features an effective gravitylike fifth force that alters the growth of structure, leading to an enhancement of the halo mass function (HMF) on cluster scales. The enhanced cluster abundance allows for constraints on the nDGP model using cluster samples. We employ the South Pole Telescope (SPT) cluster sample, selected through the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect with the SPT and with mass calibration using weak-lensing data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The cluster sample contains 1,005 clusters with redshifts 0.25 < z < 1.78 , which are confirmed with the multicomponent matched filter algorithm using optical and near-infrared data. Weak-lensing data from DES and HST enable a robust mass measurement of the cluster sample. We use DES Year 3 data for 688 clusters with redshifts z < 0.95 , and HST data for 39 clusters with redshifts 0.6 < z < 1.7 . We account for the enhancement in the HMF through a semi-analytic correction factor to the standard cosmology HMF derived from the spherical collapse model in the nDGP model. We then further calibrate this model using N -body simulations. In addition, for the first time, we analyze the primary CMB temperature and polarization anisotropy measurements from Planck PR4 within the nDGP model. We obtain a competitive constraint from the joint analysis of the SPT cluster abundance with the Planck PR4 data, and report an upper bound of 1 / H 0 r c < 1.41 at 95% when assuming a cosmology with massive neutrinos.

CMB-S4: Foreground-cleaning Pipeline Comparison for Measuring Primordial Gravitational Waves

We compare multiple foreground-cleaning pipelines for estimating the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, using simulated maps of the planned CMB-S4 experiment within the context of the South Pole Deep Patch. To evaluate robustness, we analyze bias and uncertainty on r across various foreground suites using map-based simulations. The foreground-cleaning methods include: a parametric maximum likelihood approach applied to auto- and cross-power spectra between frequency maps; a map-based parametric maximum-likelihood method; and a harmonic-space internal linear combination using frequency maps. We summarize the conceptual basis of each method to highlight their similarities and differences. To better probe the impact of foreground residuals, we implement an iterative internal delensing step, leveraging a map-based pipeline to generate a lensing B-mode template from the large aperture telescope frequency maps. Our results show that the performance of the three approaches is comparable for simple and intermediate-complexity foregrounds, with σ(r) ranging from 3–5 ×10 −4 . However, biases at the 1σ–2σ level appear when analyzing more complex forms of foreground emission. By extending the baseline pipelines to marginalize over foreground residuals, we demonstrate that contamination can be reduced to within statistical uncertainties, albeit with a pipeline-dependent impact on σ(r), which translates to a detection significance between 2σ and 4σ for an input value of r = 0.003. These findings suggest varying levels of maturity among the tested pipelines, with the auto- and cross-spectra-based approach demonstrating the best stability and overall performance. Moreover, given the extremely low noise levels, mutual validation of independent foreground-cleaning pipelines is essential to ensure the robustness of any potential detection.

CMB Lensing Reconstruction Using Two Years of Temperature Data from the SPT-3G Summer Survey

We present the first reconstruction of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing potential from the SPT-3G Summer survey using two years of temperature data. The Summer survey has a total area of approximately 2640 deg$^2$, split into three fields covering 1210, 570, and 860 deg$^2$, respectively. A joint analysis of the three Summer fields yields a lensing amplitude of $A^{\rm comb} = 1.015 \pm 0.053$ relative to a fiducial Planck 2018 $Λ$CDM cosmology for the multipole range $50 < L < 2000$. These early results from the SPT-3G Summer survey highlight the potential for increasing the signal-to-noise ratio when combining the Summer fields with the SPT-3G Main and Wide fields for a total SPT-3G survey area of $\sim$ 10,000 deg$^2$.

Characterization of MKIDs for CMB Observation at 220 GHz With the South Pole Telescope

We present an updated design of the 220 GHz microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) pixel for SPT-3G+, the next-generation camera for the South Pole Telescope. We show results of the dark testing of a 63-pixel array with mean inductor quality factor $Q_{i} = 4.8 \times 10^{5}$, aluminum inductor transition temperature $T_{c} = 1.19$K, and kinetic inductance fraction $\alpha _{k} = 0.32$. We optically characterize both the microstrip-coupled and CPW-coupled resonators, and find both have a spectral response close to prediction with an optical efficiency of $\eta \sim 70\%$. However, we find slightly lower optical response on the lower edge of the band than predicted, with neighboring dark detectors showing more response in this region, though at level consistent with less than 5% frequency shift relative to the optical detectors. The detectors show polarized response consistent with expectations, with a cross-polar response of $\sim 10\%$for both detector orientations.

Gravitational wave and CMB probes of axion kination

Rotations of an axion field in field space provide a natural origin for an era of kination domination, where the energy density is dominated by the kinetic term of the axion field, preceded by an early era of matter domination. Remarkably, no entropy is produced at the end of matter domination and hence these eras of matter and kination domination may occur even after Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We derive constraints on these eras from both the cosmic microwave background and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We investigate how this cosmological scenario affects the spectrum of possible primordial gravitational waves and find that the spectrum features a triangular peak. We discuss how future observations of gravitational waves can probe the viable parameter space, including regions that produce axion dark matter by the kinetic misalignment mechanism or the baryon asymmetry by axiogenesis. For QCD axion dark matter produced by the kinetic misalignment mechanism, a modification to the inflationary gravitational wave spectrum occurs above 0.01 Hz and, for high values of the energy scale of inflation, the prospects for discovery are good. We briefly comment on implications for structure formation of the universe.

The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: a CMB lensing mass map over 2100 square degrees of sky and its cross-correlation with BOSS-CMASS galaxies

In this work, we construct cosmic microwave background lensing mass maps using data from the 2014 and 2015 seasons of observations with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). These maps cover 2100 square degrees of sky and overlap with a wide variety of optical surveys. The maps are signal dominated on large scales and have fidelity such that their correlation with the cosmic infrared background is clearly visible by eye. We also create lensing maps with thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich contamination removed using a novel cleaning procedure that only slightly degrades the lensing signal-to-noise ratio. The cross-spectrum between the cleaned lensing map and the BOSS CMASS galaxy sample is detected at 10σ significance, with an amplitude of A = 1.02 ± 0.10 relative to the Planck best-fitting Lambda cold dark matter cosmological model with fiducial linear galaxy bias. Our measurement lays the foundation for lensing cross-correlation science with current ACT data and beyond.

Using lower-redshift, non-CMB, data to constrain the Hubble constant and other cosmological parameters

Here we use updated Hubble parameter and baryon acoustic oscillation data, as well as other lower-redshift Type Ia supernova, Mg ii reverberation-measured quasar, quasar angular size, H ii starburst galaxy, and Amati-correlated gamma-ray burst data, to jointly constrain cosmological parameters in six cosmological models. The joint analysis provides model-independent determinations of the Hubble constant, H 0 = 69.7 ± 1.2 km s -1 Mpc -1 , and the current non-relativistic matter density parameter, Ω m0 = 0.295 ± 0.017. These error bars are factors of 2.2 and 2.3 larger than the corresponding error bars in the flat ΛCDM model from Planck TT,TE,EE+lowE+lensing cosmic microwave background anisotropy data. Based on the deviance information criterion (DIC), the flat ΛCDM model is most favored but mild dark energy dynamics and a little spatial curvature are not ruled out.

CMB power spectra and cosmological parameters from Planck PR4 with CamSpec

ABSTRACT We present angular power spectra and cosmological parameter constraints derived from the Planck PR4 (NPIPE) maps of the cosmic microwave background. NPIPE, released by the Planck Collaboration in 2020, is a new processing pipeline for producing calibrated frequency maps from Planck data. We have created new versions of the CamSpec likelihood using these maps and applied them to constrain the lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model and single-parameter extensions. We find excellent consistency between NPIPE and the Planck 2018 maps at the parameter level, showing that the Planck cosmology is robust to substantial changes in the mapmaking. The lower noise of NPIPE leads to ~10 per cent tighter constraints, and we see both smaller error bars and a shift towards the ΛCDM values for beyond-ΛCDM parameters including ΩK and AL.

Hubble constant difference between CMB lensing and BAO measurements

We apply a tension metric QUDM, the update difference in mean parameters, to understand the source of the difference in the measured Hubble constant H0 inferred with cosmic microwave background lensing measurements from the Planck satellite (H 0 = $67.9$ $^{+1.1}_{–1.3}$ km/s/Mpc) and from the South Pole Telescope (H 0 = $72.0$ $^{+2.1}_{–2.5}$ km/s/Mpc) when both are combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements with priors on the baryon density (BBN). Q UDM isolates the relevant parameter directions for tension or concordance where the two data sets are both informative, and aids in the identification of subsets of data that source the observed tension. With Q UDM , we uncover that the difference in H 0 is driven by the tension between Planck lensing and BAO+BBN, at probability-to-exceed of 6.6%. Most of this mild tension comes from the galaxy BAO measurements parallel to the line of sight in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.75. Here, the redshift dependence of the parallel BAOs pulls both the matter density Ω m and H 0 high in Λ CDM, but these parameter anomalies are usually hidden when the BAO measurements are combined with other cosmological data sets with much stronger Ω m constraints.

Optimizing foreground mitigation for CMB lensing with combined multifrequency and geometric methods

Here, a key challenge for current and upcoming cosmic microwave background lensing measurements is their sensitivity to biases from extragalactic foregrounds, such as Sunyaev-Zel'dovich signals or cosmic infrared background emission. Several methods have been developed to mitigate these lensing foreground biases, dividing broadly into multifrequency cleaning approaches and modifications to the estimator geometry, but how to optimally combine these methods has not yet been explored in detail. In this paper, we examine which combination of lensing foreground mitigation strategies is best able to reduce the impact of foreground contamination for a Simons Observatory-like experiment while preserving maximal signal-to-noise. Although the optimal combination obtained depends on whether bias reduction or variance reduction is prioritized and on whether polarization data is used, generally, we find that combinations involving both geometric (profile hardening, source hardening, or shear) and multifrequency (symmetric cleaning) methods perform best. For lensing power spectrum measurements from temperature (polarization and temperature), our combined estimator methods are able to reduce the bias below σ/4 or 0.3% (0.1%), a factor of 16 (30) lower than the standard quadratic estimator bias, at a modest signal-to-noise cost of only 18% (12%). In contrast, single-method foreground-mitigation approaches struggle to reduce the bias to a negligible level below σ/2 without incurring a large noise penalty. For upcoming and current experiments, our combined methods therefore represent a promising approach for making lensing measurements with negligible foreground bias.

Measurement of the CMB temperature power spectrum and constraints on cosmology from the SPT-3G 2018 T T , T E , and E E dataset

We present a sample-variance-limited measurement of the temperature power spectrum ( T T ) of the cosmic microwave background using observations of a ∼ 1500 deg 2 field made by the SPT-3G in 2018. We report multifrequency power spectrum measurements at 95, 150, and 220 GHz covering the angular multipole range 750 ≤ ℓ < 3000 . We combine this T T measurement with the published polarization power spectrum measurements from the 2018 observing season and update their associated covariance matrix to complete the SPT-3G 2018 T T / T E / E E dataset. This is the first analysis to present cosmological constraints from SPT T T , T E , and E E power spectrum measurements jointly. We blind the cosmological results and subject the dataset to a series of consistency tests at the power spectrum and parameter level. We find excellent agreement between frequencies and spectrum types and our results are robust to the modeling of astrophysical foregrounds. We report results for Λ CDM and a series of extensions, drawing on the following parameters: the amplitude of the gravitational lensing effect on primary power spectra A L , the effective number of neutrino species N eff , the primordial helium abundance Y P , and the baryon clumping factor due to primordial magnetic fields b . We find that the SPT-3G 2018 T T / T E / E E data are well fit by Λ CDM with a probability to exceed of 15%. For Λ CDM , we constrain the expansion rate today to H 0 = 68.3 ± 1.5 km s - 1 Mpc - 1 and the combined structure growth parameter to S 8 = 0.797 ± 0.042 . The SPT-based results are effectively independent of Planck, and the cosmological parameter constraints from either dataset are within < 1 σ of each other. The addition of temperature data to the SPT-3G T E / E E power spectra improves constraints by 8–27% for each of the Λ CDM cosmological parameters. When additionally fitting A L , N eff , or N eff + Y P , the posteriors of these parameters tighten by 5–24%. In the case of primordial magnetic fields, complete T T / T E / E E power spectrum measurements are necessary to break the degeneracy between b and n s , the spectral index of primordial density perturbations. We report a 95% confidence upper limit from SPT-3G data of b < 1.0 . The cosmological constraints in this work are the tightest from SPT primary power spectrum measurements to date and the analysis forms a new framework for future SPT analyses.
