Surface acoustic waves and lattice vibrations in two-dimensional Ti 3 ⁢C 2 ⁢𝑇 𝑥 (𝑇 =O, F) MXene films

We investigated surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagation and lattice vibrations in two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide (Ti 3 ⁢C 2 ⁢𝑇 x ) MXene films as a function of surface termination and layer stacking, using atomistic simulations. We found that SAW propagation velocity is highly sensitive to both single-layer properties and interlayer bonding. Surface terminations significantly modulate wave behavior, with oxygen and fluorine terminations producing distinct effects on wave propagation, with oxygen-terminated monolayers exhibiting 20% higher wave speeds than fluorine counterparts due to strengthened intralayer bonds. Key observations include the transition from one to two layers causing wave speed variations, and the development of interlayer modes that generate more dispersed lattice vibrations. As the film layer thickness increases, SAW propagation becomes predominantly confined to the upper surface, with coherence of vibrational modes diminishing in multilayer structures. These findings suggest MXene terminations and layer stacking are crucial parameters for controlling SAW behavior, offering promising avenues for novel acoustic wave device applications.

PotLib 2023: New version of a potential energy surface library for chemical systems

POTLIB is a library of global and semiglobal potential energy surface subprograms. The library currently features 410 entries, including both single-state entries and multi-state entries. When one calls the routine of a single-state entry, it returns the ground-electronic-state adiabatic potential energy surface at the input geometry. In addition, some entries also return the gradient of the surface. Further, when one calls a multi-state entry, it returns a diabatic potential energy matrix (DPEM). If the entry also has the gradient of the DPEM, one can compute adiabatic surfaces, their gradients, and the nonadiabatic coupling vectors (NACs) from the DPEM and its gradient by diagonalization. Some but not all the routines conform to one of a set of standard interfaces. The goal is to facilitate chemical dynamics research by collecting and disseminating a comprehensive collection of state-of-the-art potential energy routines (developed by a wide, international group of researchers) with systematic and well-defined interfaces for use with chemical dynamics programs. Effect of Acid Etching Time in Ti 3 C 2 MXene’s Interlayer Spacing and Conductivity

Materials with sheet-like morphologies often form interconnected networks of layers or flakes, offering continuous channels for electron and ion transport in electrochemical energy storage applications. One such material is the recently discovered class of 2-D transition metal carbides/nitrides, called MXene, whose general formula is M n+1 X n T x (where M = transition metal; n = 1, 2, or 3; X = carbon or nitrogen; and T x = termination group such as –F, –OH, and/or =O). Ti 3 C 2 , one of the most studied MXene, can be synthesized by selectively etching the aluminum layer in Ti 3 AlC 2 (also called MAX phase). The most straightforward technique to exfoliate this layer is by wet-chemical etching with high-concentration hydrofluoric acid (HF). In this study, the effect of etching time on the morphology, interlayer spacing, and electrical conductivity of the resultant MXene was studied.

Investigation of the Pressure-Loss Characteristics of the Westinghouse X24-C-2 Inlet Screen, TED No. NACA 0447

At the request of the Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy Department, investigations of the static-pressure losses and total-head distributions of the Westinghouse X24-C-2 inlet screen were made in the induction aerodynamics laboratory at Langley. The screen was investigated in two configurations, both before and after rounding the leading edges of the vanes. Investigations were conducted through air flows up to about pounds per second. The results of the investigations indicate that maximum lift coefficients of 1.36, 1.71 and 2.11 were measured on the model with flaps neutral and deflected 20 deg. and 55 deg, respectively, at a reynolds number of 8,600,000. When the duct inlet was replaced by a basic airfoil nose the flap neutral maximum lift coefficient was increased from 1.36 to 1.41. The results also showed that at maximum lift with flaps neutral or deflected 55 deg most of the area between the nacelles was stalled while only small areas on other portions of the model were stalled; when the duct inlet was replaced by the basic airfoil nose the stall was delayed to a slightly higher angle of attack but the nature of the stall was relatively unaffected.

Coordinated Cation Transport in Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene Membranes

Membrane nanofiltration is an attractive strategy for the selective recovery of high-demand metals from wastewater and brine. Effective sieving of ions in aqueous environments will require precise control over membranes’ nanochannel size and chemistry. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is an environmentally stable 2D material that can be processed into laminar membranes containing nanoscale interlayer spaces. The MXene interlayer environment depends on the ion species and amount of water intercalated between MXene sheets, and it is the major factor governing permeation and selectivity through MXene membranes. Coordinated ion–ion and ion-interlayer dynamics in the presence of complex mixtures can impact ion permeability and selectivity. Herein, we observe strong competitive effects between different cations (Li + , Na + , and Ca 2+ ) in binary mixtures, resulting in reduced selectivity when compared with single-salt permeability ratios. X-ray diffraction, molecular dynamics, and density functional theory simulations support the conclusion that cations with stronger attraction to MXene flakes can preferentially occupy the MXene nanochannels and hinder other ions via charge or size exclusion. In conclusion, elucidation of ion transport behavior in MXene under complex conditions will allow for more rational design of efficient ion-sieving membranes.

Direct determination of the zero-field splitting for the Fe 3+ ion in a synthetic polymorph of NaMgFe(C 2 O 4 ) 3 ·9H 2 O: A natural metal-organic framework

Here we employed inelastic neutron scattering (INS), specific heat, and magnetization analysis to study the magnetism in a synthetic polymorph of the quasi-two-dimensional natural metal-organic framework material, stepanovite NaMgFe(C 2 O 4 ) 3 ∙9H 2 O. No long-range magnetic order can be observed down to 0.5 K. The INS spectra show two dispersionless excitations at energy transfer 0.028(1) and 0.050(1) meV at base temperature, which are derived from the magnetic transitions between zero-field splitting (ZFS) of S = 5/2 ground state multiplets of Fe 3+ ion. Further analysis of the INS results shows that the Fe 3+ ion has an easy-axis anisotropy with axial ZFS parameter D = –0.0128(5) meV and rhombic parameter E = 0.0014(5) meV. The upward behavior at zero field and Schottky-like peak under magnetic field of the low-temperature magnetic specific heat further support the INS results. Our results clearly reveal the magnetic ground and excited state of this stepanovite polymorph.

Operando X-ray Reflectivity Reveals the Dynamical Response of Ti 3 C 2 MXene Film Structure during Electrochemical Cycling

The dynamical structural response of MXenes during electrochemical ion intercalation is critical for their functionality in fast chemical actuation and high-power electrical energy storage but has yet to be observed. Here, the dynamically evolving layer spacing of a Ti 3 C 2 T $x$ MXene film was observed using time-resolved operando X-ray reflectivity during cyclic voltammetry for applied potentials between +0.3 and -0.7 V (vs Ag/AgCl) at sweep rates 1 ≤ $v$ ≤ 500 mV/s. The pseudocapacitive electrochemical MXene response in the aqueous 0.1 M Li 2 SO 4 electrolyte, including both capacitive and redox characteristics, is characterized by kinetically limited lithium intercalation and layer contraction. In conclusion, two types of dynamical responses were observed: slow and fast lattice contraction regimes versus applied potential are correlated with the capacitive and redox features, respectively, with structural relaxation rates that scale as ~$v$ 1/2 and ~$v$, revealing two distinct dynamical structural responses during electrochemical ion intercalation.

Lithiophilic CoF 2 @C hollow spheres towards spatial lithium deposition for stable lithium metal batteries

Lithium metal (LM) is a promising anode for next-generation batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and low electrode potential. Nonetheless, side reactions, volume change, and unwanted lithium dendrite growth seriously limit the practical application of LM. Herein, with the aid of a hard template approach, a novel lithiophilic CoF 2 -carbon hollow sphere (CoF 2 @C-HS) composite material is successfully prepared via a facile in-situ fluorination and etching strategy. The lithiophilic CoF 2 acts as nucleation sites to reduce nucleation overpotential as well as induces the spatial Li deposition and the formation of LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), and the hollow carbon matrix can enhance the electrical conductivity and offer free space for LM deposition. Theoretical simulations reveal that the synergistic effect of lithiophilic CoF 2 and hollow carbon matrix homogenizes the electric field distribution and Li + flux. Benefiting from these advantages, the CoF 2 @C-HS-modified copper substrate electrode delivers an enhanced Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 93.7% for 280 cycles at 1 mA cm –2 and 1 mA h cm –2 . The symmetrical cell using CoF 2 @C-HS can stably cycle more than 1800 h with a low voltage hysteresis of 11 mV at a current density of 0.5 mA cm –2 and an areal capacity of 0.5 mA h cm –2 . Moreover, the Li@CoF 2 @C-HS composite anode enables more than 300 stable cycles at 1 C with a capacity retention of 95% in LiFePO 4 -based full cell and 110 stable cycles at 1 C in LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811)-based high-voltage full cell. Finally, this work might shed a new light on designing lithiophilic hosts to spatially confine LM deposition, realizing dendrite-free LM anodes and the practical applications of LM batteries.

It was observed that the base peak in the mass spectra of all the Diels-Alder bis adducts of anthracene diendoxide as well as of its tetrahydro derivative appear at m/e 158, corresponding to the radical cation of benzo(1,2-c:4,5-c-prime) difuran (BDF). This paper describes a synthetic equivalent of BDF and demonstrates its utility for obtaining linear acene derivatives.

Optimizing protic ionic liquid electrolyte for pre-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene supercapacitor electrodes

Electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) are of increasing importance in energy storage from renewable sources. The properties of the electrode and electrolyte materials influence the energy and power densities of EDLCs. We examined the specific capacitance and ion dynamics of a protic ionic liquid confined in pre-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Our electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the creation of a protic ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-H-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BuIMH-NTf2), using a mixture of ionic liquid, 1-butyl imidazole (BuIM), and salt, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (HNTf2), in a ratio of 0.8:0.2 led to the optimal capacitance. Remarkably, quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements revealed increased particle mobility at this composition, attributed to the more efficient accumulation of BuIMH + on the electrode surface. This deposit of additional ions results in fewer BuIM molecules away from the surface, enhancing their mobility due to reduced crowding. This composition-dependent electrochemical behavior will guide the formulation of more efficient protic ionic liquid systems, enabling faster ion transport in energy storage devices.

A Sensitive Electrochemical Cholinesterase-Inhibiting Biosensor for Organophosphorus Pesticides Based on Ti 3 C 2 TX MXene Quantum Dots

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) pose significant environmental and health risks due to their widespread use and toxicity, primarily by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase. Traditional detection methods are often slow and costly, highlighting the urgent need for advanced, sensitive, and accessible technologies. This study developed a highly sensitive electrochemical cholinesterase-inhibiting biosensor for OP pesticides, utilizing Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene Quantum Dots (MQDs), which was synthesized via a hydrothermal method. The biosensor’s performance was characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and cyclic voltammetry. DPV proved to be the optimal technique, exhibiting an ultralow detection limit of 1 × 10 −17 M and a wide linear range (10 −14 –10 −8 M) for chlorpyrifos (a model OP) with an estimated inhibition constant of 62 nM. The biosensor demonstrated high selectivity for OPs (chlorpyrifos, acephate, glyphosate) over a non-target pyrethroid (permethrin), confirmed by distinct electrochemical signatures and compared to in vitro cholinergic activity assays in bean beetle homogenates. The enhanced performance is attributed to the high surface-to-volume ratio, quantum confinement effects, and superior conductivity of the MQDs, as well as the robust enzyme immobilization facilitated by glutaraldehyde cross-linking and a chitosan matrix. This work presents a promising platform for rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of OP pesticides, with potential applications in environmental monitoring and public health protection.

Terahertz-polarizing effect based on geometric anisotropy of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have garnered considerable attention due to their unique properties, such as thinness and excellent electronic properties. The inherent anisotropy of 2D nanomaterials, which is characterized by their high aspect ratio, can maximize the directional functionality to enhance the conductivity and utilization of edges. Here, we demonstrate how to utilize the edges of titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene nanosheet to control the linear polarization in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. By a simple and unique vertical alignment exploiting the high surface charge and excellent colloidal dispersibility of MXene nanosheets, MXene nanosheets are vertically oriented along an applied AC electric field. The well-aligned edges justify the THz polarizing effect, revealing outstanding performances such as the broadband coverage in 0.2–1.5 THz and an exceptional extinction ratio reaching 20 dB. Furthermore, we vary the local orientation of the vertical MXene nanosheets by tailoring the applied electric field, enabling spatially controllable polarization capabilities. Our results can provide a generic tool for the utilization of 2D nanomaterials in diverse potential applications in optics and electronics.

Atomic-scale investigations of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene surfaces

The family of two-dimensional (2D) carbides and/or nitrides, also known as MXenes, has generated great excitement within the scientific community and has been proposed for a wide variety of applications since its discovery. Despite this attention, there have been only limited studies of the atomically resolved local electronic and physical structure of MXene surfaces strongly affecting the physicochemical properties of these materials. Here, in this study, we report local structural, spectroscopic, and chemical investigations of the surfaces of Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, closely coupled to theoretical studies. Terminal groups are visualized and characterized, along with surface TiO 2 clusters formed upon exposure to air. Fundamental insight into the local electronic and chemical properties associated with different terminal groups on MXenes and their oxidation products is presented.

Impact of Asymmetric Microstructure on Ion Transport in Ti 3 C 2 T x Membranes

Consolidation or densification of low-dimensional MXene materials into membranes can result in the formation of asymmetric membrane structures. Nanostructural (short-range) and microstructural (long-range) heterogeneity can influence mass transport and separation mechanisms. Short-range structural dynamics include the presence of water confined between the 2D layers, while long-range structural properties include the formation of defects, micropores, and mesopores. Herein, it is demonstrated that structural heterogeneity in Ti 3 C 2 T x membranes fabricated via vacuum-assisted filtration significantly affects ion transport. Higher ion permeabilities are achieved when the dense “bottom” side of the membrane, rather than the porous “top” side, faces the feed solution. Characterization of the membrane reveals distinct differences in flake alignment, surface roughness, and porosity across the membrane. In conclusion, the directional dependence on permeability suggests that one region of the membrane experiences stronger internal concentration polarization, potentially suppressing permeability through the porous side of the membrane.

Direct writing of PVBVA/Ti 3 C 2 T x (MXene) triboelectric nanogenerators for energy harvesting and sensing applications

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have gained recognition for their potential to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, making them attractive for applications in healthcare, robotics, and human-device interfaces. However, many TENG devices rely on fluorinated polymers for high charge generation and involve complex fabrication processes, which limit their practicality and environmental sustainability. Here, we developed an eco-friendly composite of poly (vinyl butyral-co-vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) (PVBVA) and Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene for extrusion printing onto aluminum foil substrates, enabling the additive manufacturing of TENGs. Experimental results indicate that integrating 5.5 mg mL -1 of MXene (P-MX 5.5) into PVBVA resulted in a power density of 760 mW·m -2 , with simultaneous improvements in open-circuit voltage (129 %) and short-circuit current (250 %), demonstrating enhanced charge transfer efficiency. Beyond aluminum foil-based devices, we further explored the fully printed P-MX 5.5 TENG by utilizing silver ink electrodes, eliminating the need for aluminum foil. This fully printed, flexible TENG was successfully used for real-time human motion sensing, demonstrating its ability to detect activities such as walking, running, knee bending, and jumping. Collectively, our additively manufactured and sustainable PVBVA-MXene TENG composites, including both aluminum-based and fully printed versions, show promise for future energy harvesters, sensors, wearable electronics, healthcare, and robotic applications.

Probing the In Situ Pseudocapacitive Charge Storage in Ti 3 C 2 MXene Thin Films with X-ray Reflectivity

MXenes are a large family of two-dimensional materials that are attractive for energy storage due to their high-rate charging capabilities as well as for electrochemical actuators, water purification, and many other technologies. Ion intercalation during electrochemically driven charge and discharge processes is the fundamental process associated with MXene functionality, which we have characterized here using in situ and operando X-ray reflectivity (XRR). Experiments performed at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory monitored the changes in the structure of a Ti 3 C 2 MXene film on a platinum current collector as a function of static applied potential between 0.3 and –0.7 V vs Ag/AgCl in an aqueous 0.1 M Li 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Negative potential sweeps lead to a contraction of 1.2 Å in the interlayer spacing and a loss of electron density between the layers, likely due to Li + ion insertion and water removal. The change in lattice spacing includes a continuous variation vs potential as well as an additional discrete contraction that occurs near –0.35 V that has the characteristics of a first-order transition. The continuous change in the MXene interlayer spacing is associated with the capacitive charge, while the discrete change in structure correlated to the weak feature in the cyclic voltammogram at –0.35 V can be interpreted as either a pseudocapacitive charging process or a potential-dependent change in capacity.

Importance of Nuclear Quantum Effects on Aqueous Electrolyte Transport under Confinement in Ti 3 C 2 MXenes

Protons display a high chemical activity and strongly affect the charge storage capability in confined interlayer spaces of two-dimensional (2D) materials. As such, an accurate representation of proton dynamics under confinement is important for understanding and predicting charge storage dynamics in these materials. While often ignored in atomistic-scale simulations, nuclear quantum effects (NQEs), e.g., tunneling, can be significant under confinement even at room temperature. Here, using the thermostatted ring polymer molecular dynamics implementation of path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) in conjunction with the ReaxFF force field, density functional tight binding (DFTB), and NequIP neural network potential simulations, we investigate the role of NQEs on proton and water transport in bulk water and aqueous electrolytes under confinement in Ti 3 C 2 MXenes. Although overall NQEs are relatively small, especially in bulk, we find that they can alter both quantitative values and qualitative trends on both proton transport and water self-diffusion under confinement relative to classical MD predictions. Therefore, our results suggest the need for NQEs to be considered to simulate aqueous systems under confinement for both qualitative and quantitative accuracy.
