Radar Follow-up of Spaceguard Discoveries: Imaging and Astrometry

Radar is a very powerful groundbased technique for post-discovery reconnaissance of NEOs and is likely to play a central role in investigating these fantastic worlds during the foreseeable future. Delay- Doppler measurements are orthogonal to optical angle measurements, typically have a fractional precision between 10^-5 and 10^-9, and consequently are invaluable for refining orbits and prediction ephemerides.

Extending the ICRF into the Infrared: 2MASS - UCAC Astrometry

An external comparison between the infrared 2MASS and the optical UCAC positions was performed, both being on the same system, the ICRS. About 48 million sources in common were identified. Random errors of the 2MASS catalog positions are about 60 to 70 mas per coordinate for the Ks = 4 to 14 range, increasing to about 100 to 150 mas for saturated and very faint stars. Systematic position differences between the 2 catalogs are very small, about 5 to 10 mas as a function of magnitude and color, with somewhat larger errors as a function of right ascension and declination. The extension of the ICRF into the infrared has become a reality.

Fast Switching and Precision Relative Astrometry at the DSN

A) We are developing new techniques to improve astrometric accuracy: 1) Reducing switching time (approx. 60s) and angular separation (approx.1deg) between quasars; 2) Use of phase delay & bandpass calibration; 3) Techniques also applicable with future DSN Array. B) Initial set of observations carried out at the DSN show great promise. C) Continue DSN observations using fainter calibrators to study robustness and to verify and validate error estimates. (Eventually demo technique with spacecraft measurements). D) Viability of technique depends on existence of sufficient number of calibrators. (Determining what fraction of radio sources are compact at the VLBA) E) May be able to use calibrators with flux density approx. 50 mJy with calibrator 1deg. G) Relative precision of approx.0.5 nrad may be achievable. E) Absolute measurement always depends on knowledge of calibrator position. (Catalog maintained and improved).

The Tropospheric Products of the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry

The IVS runs two tropospheric products: The IVS tropospheric parameter rapid combination monitors the zenith wet delay (ZWD) and zenith total delay (ZTD) of the rapid turnaround sessions R1 and R4. Goal of the combination is the identification and the exclusion of outliers by comparison and the assessment of the precision of current VLBI solutions in terms of tropospheric parameters. The rapid combination is done on a weekly basis four weeks after the observation files are released on IVS Data Centers. Since tropospheric and geodetic parameters, such as vertical station components, can significantly correlate, the consistency of the ZTD can be a measure of the consistency of the corresponding TRF as well. The ZWD mainly rely on accurate atmospheric pressure data. Thus, besides estimation techniques, modeling and analyst s noise, ZWD reflects differences in the atmospheric pressure data applied to the VLBI analysis. The second product, called tropospheric parameter long-term combination, aims for an accurate determination of climatological signals, such as trends of the atmospheric water vapor observed by VLBI. Therefore, the long-term homogeneity of atmospheric pressure data plays a crucial role for this product. The paper reviews the methods applied and results achieved so far and describes the new maintenance through DGFI.

Precise Absolute Astrometry from the VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey at 5 GHz

We present accurate positions for 857 sources derived from the astrometric analysis of 16 eleven-hour experiments from the Very Long Baseline Array imaging and polarimetry survey at 5 GHz (VIPS). Among the observed sources, positions of 430 objects were not previously determined at milliarcsecond-level accuracy. For 95% of the sources the uncertainty of their positions ranges from 0.3 to 0.9 mas, with a median value of 0.5 mas. This estimate of accuracy is substantiated by the comparison of positions of 386 sources that were previously observed in astrometric programs simultaneously at 2.3/8.6 GHz. Surprisingly, the ionosphere contribution to group delay was adequately modeled with the use of the total electron content maps derived from GPS observations and only marginally affected estimates of source coordinates.

High Precision Focal Plane Astrometry… and possibilities for the HDST

The calibration techniques we are developing for WFIRST can be also used on HDST, turning it into a revolutionary astrometric instrument. Estimated astrometric accuracy is 10’s of nano arcseconds. Two examples of what such a capability allows us to do: 1)Parallaxes of galactic neighborhood out to 100 Mpc 2) Astrometric characterization of sun like stars out to 50 p.
