Coupling of radiation into thin film modes by means of localized plasma resonances

The interaction between the surface plasmon mode that propagates at a metal dielectric interface and the localized plasma resonances (LPR) is investigated experimentally in Ag-island films. A stair-stepped sample geometry comprising a glass substrate, a continuous 50-nm Ag film, an LiF spacer film of thickness d = 5-60 nm, and an Ag-island film of mass thickness 3 nm is used in near-normal-reflectivity and plasmon-propagation-constant (k) determinations. The results are presented graphically and discussed. The overall shape of the reflectivity curves is found to be characteristic of Ag films, but with a dip at about 400 nm (corresponding to the absorption resonance of the island film) which is most pronounced with d = 25 nm. It is inferred that the island resonances are strongly coupled to a continuous-film dissipative mechanism at this d value. This inference is supported by the fact that the variation in k, correctd for LiF effects and plotted as a function of d, is greatest at around d = 25 nm. The implications of this finding for broad-band coupling into a thin-film mode, LPR enhancement of waveguide nonlinear effects, and new surface-enhanced-Raman-scattering geometries are indicated.

Electrophotocatalytic perfluoroalkylation by LMCT excitation of Ag(II) perfluoroalkyl carboxylates

Molecular Ag(II) complexes are superoxidizing photoredox catalysts capable of generating radicals from redox-reticent substrates. In this work, we exploited the electrophilicity of Ag(II) centers in [Ag(bpy) 2 (TFA)][OTf] and Ag(bpy)(TFA) 2 (bpy, 2,2′-bipyridine; OTf, CF 3 SO 3 – ) complexes to activate trifluoroacetate (TFA) by visible light–induced homolysis. The resulting trifluoromethyl radicals may react with a variety of arenes to forge C(sp 2 )–CF 3 bonds. This methodology is general and extends to other perfluoroalkyl carboxylates of higher chain length (R F CO 2 – ; R F , CF 2 CF 3 or CF 2 CF 2 CF 3 ). The photoredox reaction may be rendered electrophotocatalytic by regenerating the Ag(II) complexes electrochemically during irradiation. Electrophotocatalytic perfluoroalkylation of arenes at turnover numbers exceeding 20 was accomplished by photoexciting the Ag(II)–TFA ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) state, followed by electrochemical reoxidation of the Ag(I) photoproduct back to the Ag(II) photoreactant.

Implementation of rapid diagnostics assays for detection of histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis in central american people living with HIV

Abstract Objectives Histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis are important public health problems in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Central America. Conventional laboratory assays, based on microscopy and culture, are not optimal for the diagnosis of either disease. However, antigen (Ag) assays are rapid and highly accurate for the diagnosis of these infections. Methods Laboratory surveillance of PLHIV was carried out in four hospitals in Panama, Honduras and Nicaragua, between 2015 and 2019. Detection of Histoplasma antigens in urine was performed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA), and Cryptococcus antigen detection in sera and cerebrospinal fluid specimens was performed by lateral flow assay (LFA). Results A total of 4,453 PLHIV with clinical suspicion of histoplasmosis ( n = 1,343) or cryptococcosis ( n = 3,110; 2,721 sera and 389 CSF) were tested. Of 1,343 patients suspected of having histoplasmosis, 269 (20%) were Histoplasma Ag positive. Of 3,110 patients tested using the Cryptococcus Ag assay, 329 (11%) were positive. Honduras reported the highest positivity rates (32% for Histoplasma Ag, and 16% for Cryptococcus Ag); Panama reported the largest number of patients testing positive using the Histoplasma Ag assay ( n = 201); and Nicaragua reported the largest number of patients testing positive using the Cryptococcus Ag assay ( n = 170). Conclusion Here, we show how the implementation of rapid diagnostics assays impacted case detection and was useful for the care of people with advanced HIV. Rapid and accurate diagnosis could reduce mortality associated with histoplasmosis and cryptococcosis in PLHIV.

Molybdenum Carbide Electrocatalyst In Situ Embedded in Porous Nitrogen–Rich Carbon Nanotubes Promotes Rapid Kinetics in Sodium–Metal–Sulfur Batteries

This work is the first report of a molybdenum carbide-based electrocatalyst for sulfur-based sodium metal batteries (SMBs/NMBs). MoC/Mo 2 C is in-situ grown on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes in parallel with formation of extensive nanoporosity. Sulfur impregnation (50 wt% S) results in unique triphasic architecture termed MoC/Mo 2 C@PCNT-S. Quasi-solid-state phase transformation to Na 2 S is promoted in carbonate electrolyte, with in-situ time-resolved Raman, XPS and optical analysis demonstrating minimal soluble polysulfides. MoC/Mo 2 C@PCNT-S cathodes delivered among the most promising rate performance characteristics in literature, achieving 987 mAh g -1 at 1 Ag -1 , 818 mAh g -1 at 3 A g -1 , and 621 mAh g -1 at 5 A g -1 . The cells deliver superior cycling stability, retaining 650 mAh g -1 after 1000 cycles at 1.5 Ag -1 , corresponding to 0.028% capacity decay per cycle. High mass loading cathodes (64 wt% S, 12.7 mg cm -2 ) also show cycling stability, with anode degradation due to deep plating/stripping driving capacity decay. Density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that formation energy of Na 2 S x (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) on surface of MoC/Mo 2 C is significantly lowered compared to analogous redox in liquid. Strong binding of Na 2 S x (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) on MoC/Mo 2 C surfaces results from charge transfer between the sulfur and Mo sites on carbides' surface.
