On the interpretation of low-energy particle access to the polar caps

Neither particle access to the polar caps by motion along magnetospheric field lines connected to the interplanetary field (in the 'open' model) nor particle access to the polar caps by combined diffusive and convective motion across magnetospheric field lines (in the 'closed' model) adequately explains the available data. The fact that data exist that are difficult to interpret with one model does not automatically confirm the other model.

NASA Thesaurus. Volume 2: Access vocabulary

The NASA Thesaurus -- Volume 2, Access Vocabulary -- contains an alphabetical listing of all Thesaurus terms (postable and nonpostable) and permutations of all multiword and pseudo-multiword terms. Also included are Other Words (non-Thesaurus terms) consisting of abbreviations, chemical symbols, etc. The permutations and Other Words provide 'access' to the appropriate postable entries in the Thesaurus.

ACCESS 1: Approximation Concepts Code for Efficient Structural Synthesis program documentation and user's guide

The program documentation and user's guide for the ACCESS-1 computer program is presented. ACCESS-1 is a research oriented program which implements a collection of approximation concepts to achieve excellent efficiency in structural synthesis. The finite element method is used for structural analysis and general mathematical programming algorithms are applied in the design optimization procedure. Implementation of the computer program, preparation of input data and basic program structure are described, and three illustrative examples are given.

Design study of the accessible focal plane telescope for shuttle

The design and cost analysis of an accessible focal plane telescope for Spacelab is presented in blueprints, tables, and graphs. Topics covered include the telescope tube, the telescope mounting, the airlock plus Spacelab module aft plate, the instrument adapter, and the instrument package. The system allows access to the image plane with instrumentation that can be operated by a scientist in a shirt sleeve environment inside a Spacelab module.

Comparison of numeric keyboard and CRT line-labeled buttons for information access

Test were conducted to determine whether differences in speed and accuracy are experienced when using either line-labeled index buttons or a numeric keyboard for page selection in airborne CRT-display area navigation systems. The experiment was conducted with six airline pilots, each flying the same two simulated RNAV routes. Three pilot subjects used line-labeled buttons adjacent to the CRT screen, while three used a numeric keyboard for page access. The hypothesis of no differences in response times between the two modes of access could not be rejected.

Mobile multiple access study

Multiple access techniques (FDMA, CDMA, TDMA) for the mobile user and attempts to identify the current best technique are discussed. Traffic loading is considered as well as voice and data modulation and spacecraft and system design. Emphasis is placed on developing mobile terminal cost estimates for the selected design. In addition, design examples are presented for the alternative techniques of multiple access in order to compare with the selected technique.

A user's guide is presented for the ACCESS-2 computer program. ACCESS-2 is a research oriented program which implements a collection of approximation concepts to achieve excellent efficiency in structural synthesis. The finite element method is used for structural analysis and general mathematical programming algorithms are applied in the design optimization procedure.

X10: A FORTRAN direct access data management system

The XIO system is a set of subroutines that provide generalized data management capability for FORTRAN programs using a direct access file. Arrays of integer, real, double precision, and character data may be stored, each logical group of data identified by a unique matrix number. A matrix may be organized and stored as batches to reduce core requirements. Batches may be accessed randomly or sequentially. The file may be checkpointed and retained, allowing for restarts with stored values. The XIO subroutines operate on either IBM 360-370/OS/VS or DEC PDP-11/RSX computing systems.

Planning for airport access: An analysis of the San Francisco Bay area. The setting

The regional setting for the three San Franscisco Bay area airports is described. The general role of the airports in the national air transportation system, the demand for air transportation, and the relationship of airport location to the demand for air transportation are examined. The problem of airport access is also considered. Various access modes, their destination, frequency, and cost are presented.

Electrical Evaluation of RCA MWS5501D Random Access Memory, Volume 2, Appendix a

The electrical characterization and qualification test results are presented for the RCA MWS5001D random access memory. The tests included functional tests, AC and DC parametric tests, AC parametric worst-case pattern selection test, determination of worst-case transition for setup and hold times, and a series of schmoo plots. The address access time, address readout time, the data hold time, and the data setup time are some of the results surveyed.

Review and revocation of access privileges distributed through capabilities

The problems of review and revocation of access privileges are presented in the context of the systems that use capabilities for the long-term distribution of access privileges. The approach to solve these two problems requires that a capability propagation graph be maintained in memory spaces associated with subjects (e.g., domains, processes, etc.) that make copies of the respective capability; the graph remains inaccessible to those subjects, however. Parallel processes of the operating system update the graph as the system runs. It is noted that the most important application of the above mechanisms may prove to be the possibility of implementing a capability-based system in which the capability representation is short.

ACCESS 3. Approximation concepts code for efficient structural synthesis: User's guide

A user's guide is presented for ACCESS-3, a research oriented program which combines dual methods and a collection of approximation concepts to achieve excellent efficiency in structural synthesis. The finite element method is used for structural analysis and dual algorithms of mathematical programming are applied in the design optimization procedure. This program retains all of the ACCESS-2 capabilities and the data preparation formats are fully compatible. Four distinct optimizer options were added: interior point penalty function method (NEWSUMT); second order primal projection method (PRIMAL2); second order Newton-type dual method (DUAL2); and first order gradient projection-type dual method (DUAL1). A pure discrete and mixed continuous-discrete design variable capability, and zero order approximation of the stress constraints are also included.

Satellite multiple access systems for mobile communication

This paper considers multiple access techniques for a mobile radio system which incorporates a geosynchronous orbiting satellite repeater through which mobile terminals communicate. The communication capacities of FDMA, TDMA and CDMA systems are examined for a 4 MHz bandwidth system to serve up to 10,000 users. An FDMA system with multibeam coverage is analyzed in detail. The system includes an order-wire network for demand-access control and reassignment of satellite channels. Satellite and terminal configurations are developed to a block diagram level and system costs and implementation requirements are discussed.

ERSYS-SPP access method subsystem design specification

The STARAN special purpose processor (SPP) is a machine allowing the same operation to be performed on up to 512 different data elements simultaneously. In the ERSYS system, it is to be attached to a 4341 plug compatible machine (PCM) to do certain existing algorithms and, at a later date, to perform other to be specified algorithms. That part of the interface between the 4341 PCM and the SPP located in the 4341 PCM is known as the SPP access method (SPPAM). Access to the SPPAM will be obtained by use of the NQUEUE and DQUEUE commands. The subsystem design specification is to incorporate all applicable design considerations from the ERSYS system design specification and the Level B requirements documents relating to the SPPAM. It is intended as a basis for the preliminary design review and will expand into the subsystem detailed design specification.

Performance considerations of frequency-hopping multiple access

The basic system parameters of a frequency-hopping multiple-access system are investigated. Noncoherent binary FSK and M-ary FSK signal formats are studied in a random-access asynchronous environment. Both slow and fast frequency hopping are considered. Under relatively ideal conditions, the degradation in performance with respect to the number of users is determined. The dependence on performance due to hopping rate and bandwidth constraint is developed. It is shown, for example, that, for fast hopping, the optimum hopping rate is that which spreads the users' power over the entire available bandwidth during each baud time. This agrees with the basic spread spectrum philosophy of making the signal appear white over as wide a bandwidth as possible. The computational results describe the trade-off between the number of tones in M-ary FSK and the number of hops per symbol. Given a specified number of tones in the frequency-hopping system, the results describe the manner in which the system degrades as the number of users is increased.
