Accelerating cosmology from Λ < 0 gravitational effective field theory

A large class of Λ < 0 cosmologies have big-bang/big crunch spacetimes with time-symmetric backgrounds and asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuations suggesting a possible holographic realization. We argue that these models generically have time-dependent scalar fields, and these can lead to realistic cosmologies at the level of the homogeneous background geometry, with an accelerating phase prior to the turnaround and crunch. We first demonstrate via explicit effective field theory examples that models with an asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuation can also exhibit a period of accelerated expansion without fine tuning. We then show that certain significantly more tuned examples can give predictions arbitrarily close to a ΛCDM model. Finally, we demonstrate via an explicit construction that the potentials of interest can arise from a superpotential, thus suggesting that these solutions may be compatible with an underlying supersymmetric theory.

Finite-difference multiple fluid solution for source-driven rotation in highly magnetized linear plasma device

The rotation profile of a magnetized plasma cylinder composed of multiple fluids is investigated analytically, expanding on previous results. The analytic steady-state solution is used as a benchmark for a time-dependent multiple-fluid finite-difference code, MITNS: Multiple-Ion Transport Numerical Solver. Magnetic field evolution is taken into account, both analytically and numerically. Its details are shown to be of importance when particles are allowed out of the domain. MITNS reproduces the asymptotic expansion results for a small parameter $δ<<<1$. For $\sqrt{m_elm_i} ~ δ << 1$ , a slightly different regime, dominated by viscosity-induced transport of ions, is found numerically and analytically. Finally, this verification supports the use of this code for more complex time-dependent calculations in the future. Additionally, we derive the angular velocity profile of each species due to radial particle and charge fluxes of various strengths.

Coordinate parameterisation and spectral method optimisation for Beltrami field solver in stellarator geometry

The numerical solution of the stepped pressure equilibrium (Hudson et al 2012 Phys. Plasmas 19 112502) requires a fast and robust solver to obtain the Beltrami field in three-dimensional geometry such as stellarators. The spectral method implemented in the stepped pressure equilibrium code (SPEC) is efficient when the domain is a hollow torus, but ill-conditioning of the discretised linear equations occurs in the (solid) toroid due to the artificially singular coordinate parameterisation near the axis. Here, we propose an improved choice for the reference axis to prevent coordinates surfaces from overlapping. Then, we examine the parity and asymptotics of the magnetic vector potential near the axis and suggest the use of recombined and rescaled Zernike radial basis functions. The maximum relative error in the magnetic field of the Wendelstein 7-X geometry is shown to reach 10 –9 at high resolution in a series of convergence tests and benchmarks against the boundary integral equation solver for Taylor states. The new method is also reported to significantly improve the accuracy of multi-volume SPEC calculations. A comparison between free-boundary SPEC and the analytical Dommaschk potential is presented with higher-than-usual Fourier resolution. It is illustrated that we are able to resolve low amplitude current sheets when an interface is placed where there is no flux surface in the analytic solution. This was previously concealed because of insufficient numerical resolution.

Optical tweezer measurements of asymptotic nonlinearities in complex fluids

This article presents micro-medium-amplitude oscillatory shear (μMAOS), a method to measure the frequency-dependent micromechanical properties of soft materials in the asymptotically nonlinear regime using optical tweezers. For this work, we have developed a theoretical framework to extract these nonlinear mechanical properties of the material from experimental measurements and also proposed a physical interpretation of the third-order nonlinearities measured in single-tone oscillatory tests. We validate the method using a well-characterized surfactant solution of wormlike micelles, and subsequently employ this technique to demonstrate that the cytoplasm of a living cell undergoes strain softening and shear thinning when locally subjected to weakly nonlinear oscillatory deformations.

Interrogating organo-mineral interactions by Py-GC/MS and ToF-SIMS

Soil organic matter (SOM) is crucial to soil fertility and agricultural sustainability in the face of climate change, and organo-mineral interactions are a key mechanism for stabilizing SOM. The stability of mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) can be approximated by the strength of bonds between biomolecules and mineral surfaces. We hypothesized that factors such as mineral reactivity and solution pH would impact bonding strength. To test these factors, sorption isotherms were performed on minerals differing in particle size, morphology, and reactivity (quartz, goethite, gibbsite, kaolinite, montmorillonite), under two pH conditions (4 and 6), and across a range of tannic acid concentration (0-1400 ppm). The quantity and quality of organo-mineral bonds was assessed by quantifying post-sorption solution compounds using an absorbance plate reader and assessing the thermal energy needed to break bonds using evolved gas analysis (EGA) on a pyrolysis gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (Py-GC/MS). Organo-mineral surfaces were also interrogated using Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). Sorption experiments revealed an asymptotic relationship between sorbed tannic acid and increasing initial concentrations which suggests our concentration range saturated available mineral surfaces. Results indicated that mineral identity, chiefly surface area and native pH, impacted the amount of compound sorbed to mineral surfaces. Evolved gas analyses of organo-mineral samples uncovered increased thermal stability of sorbed compounds compared to our tannic acid standard particularly on the iron oxide, goethite. ToF-SIMS revealed that goethite surface ions were covered by increasing concentrations of adsorbed tannic acid with the replacement of chlorine and sulfate ions by tannic acid related ions. Our results indicate that Py-GC/MS and ToF-SIMS are useful techniques to determine the nature and strength of organo-mineral bonds and are steppingstones to understanding controls on carbon sequestration in terrestrial systems.

Conformal wavefunctions for graviton amplitudes

The extended-BMS algebra of asymptotically flat spacetime contains an SO(3, 1) subgroup that acts by conformal transformations on the celestial sphere. It is of interest to study the representations of this subgroup associated with gravitons. To reduce the equation of motion to a Schrodinger-like equation it is necessary to impose a non-covariant gauge condition. Using these solutions, leading-order gauge invariant Weyl scalars are then computed and decomposed into families of unitary principal series representations. An invertible holographic mapping is constructed between these unitary principal series operators and massless spin-2 perturbations of flat spacetime.

Trivializing Flow in 2D-O(3) model

The two dimensional O(3) sigma model, just as quantum chromodynamics, is an asymptotically free theory with a mass gap. Therefore, it is an interesting and simple toy model to investigate algorithms for Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations of quantum chromodynamics. In this talk, we discuss the construction of a trivializing map, a field transformation from a given theory to a trivial one, through a suitably chosen gradient flow. An analytic solution for the generating functional of this trivializing flow has been obtained by a perturbative expansion in the flow time. Utilizing this solution allows for new approaches to be considered when proposing updates for a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm.

Fast nonlinear iterative solver for an implicit, energy-conserving, asymptotic-preserving charged-particle orbit integrator

Here recently, an asymptotic-preserving (AP) particle orbit integrator has been proposed with remarkable properties including exact energy conservation, the ability to capture of all first-order drifts (including the ∇B-drift), the ability to capture trapped-passing boundaries with parallel velocity extremely close to the critical velocity, and the ability to transition from strongly to weakly magnetized spatial regions. The new AP orbit integrator is implicit, employing a Crank-Nicolson (CN) temporal discretization to ensure exact energy conservation. This, in turn, requires a local nonlinear iteration involving particle velocities and positions, and the local electromagnetic fields, to obtain the new-time solution. Ref. [1] did not attempt to provide an efficient solver for this system, and employed a brute-force GMRES-driven Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) solver to invert the particle orbit equations at every timestep for expediency. While JFNK is robust and reliable, it is also expensive and very intrusive for practical implementations of the method (it requires having the JFNK machinery available and solving a 6 x 6 Jacobian system iteratively once per iteration per particle).

A finite element method for angular discretization of the radiation transport equation on spherical geodesic grids

Discrete ordinate (S N ) and filtered spherical harmonics (FP N ) based schemes have been proven to be robust and accurate in solving the Boltzmann transport equation but they have their own strengths and weaknesses in different physical scenarios. We present a new method based on a finite element approach in angle that combines the strengths of both methods and mitigates their disadvantages. The angular variables are specified on a spherical geodesic grid with functions on the sphere being represented using a finite element basis. A positivity-preserving limiting strategy is employed to prevent non-physical values from appearing in the solutions. Here, the resulting method is then compared with both S N and FP N schemes using four test problems and is found to perform well when one of the other methods fail.

A Stochastic Transport Model for the Cumulative Number of Fissions and Deposited Fission Energy

The stochastic theory of neutron transport is extended to describe the cumulative distribution of fission numbers and deposited fission energy in a multiplying assembly. Solutions for the probability distributions are obtained using analytical approximations and Monte Carlo simulation in lumped geometry and in symmetric homogeneous and heterogeneous spheres. The results show the development of a power-law tail in the steady state fission number and deposited energy distributions when the medium is critical, independent of the fission neutron multiplicity distribution and domain heterogeneity. In contrast, the asymptotic decay is faster than exponential in subcritical media due to rapid chain extinction and in supercritical media due to the increasing probability of chain divergence. Here, a formal asymptotic analysis of the problem in lumped geometry with an arbitrary fission neutron multiplicity confirms the existence of power-law tails at critical.

Fueling limits in a cylindrical viscosity-limited reactor

Recently, a method to achieve a “natural hot-ion mode” was suggested by utilizing ion viscous heating in a rotating plasma with a fixed boundary. We explore the steady-state solution to the Braginskii equations and find the parameter regime in which a significant temperature difference between ions and electrons can be sustained in a driven steady state. Here, the threshold for this effect occurs at ρ i ≳ 0.1R. An analytic, leading order low flow solution is obtained, and a numerical, moderate Mach number M ≲ 2 is investigated. The limitation is found to be at moderate Mach numbers.

Medium-induced radiative kernel with the Improved Opacity Expansion

We calculate the fully differential medium-induced radiative spectrum at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy within the Improved Opacity Expansion (IOE) framework. This scheme allows us to gain analytical control of the radiative spectrum at low and high gluon frequencies simultaneously. The high frequency regime can be obtained in the standard opacity expansion framework in which the resulting power series diverges at the characteristic frequency ω c ~ q^L 2 . In the IOE, all orders in opacity are resumed systematically below ωc yielding an asymptotic series controlled by logarithmically suppressed remainders down to the thermal scale T « ω c , while matching the opacity expansion at high frequency. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the IOE at NLO accuracy reproduces the characteristic Coulomb tail of the single hard scattering contribution as well as the Gaussian distribution resulting from multiple soft momentum exchanges. Finally, we compare our analytic scheme with a recent numerical solution, that includes a full resummation of multiple scatterings, for LHC-inspired medium parameters. Furthermore, we find a very good agreement both at low and high frequencies showcasing the performance of the IOE which provides for the first time accurate analytic formulas for radiative energy loss in the relevant perturbative kinematic regimes for dense media.

Linear-Scaling Local Natural Orbital-Based Full Triples Treatment in Coupled-Cluster Theory

We present an efficient, asymptotically linear-scaling implementation of the canonically O(N 8 ) coupled-cluster method with singles, doubles, and full triples excitations (CCSDT) method. We apply the domain-based local pair natural orbital (DLPNO) approach for computing CCSDT amplitudes. Our method, called DLPNO–CCSDT, uses the converged coupled-cluster amplitudes from a preceding DLPNO–CCSD(T) computation as a starting point for the solution of the CCSDT equations in the local natural orbital basis. To simplify the working equations, we t1-dress our two-electron integrals and Fock matrices, allowing our equations to take on the form of CCDT. With appropriate parameters, our method can recover more than 99.99% of the total canonical CCSDT correlation energy. In addition, we demonstrate that our method consistently yields sub-kJ mol –1 errors in relative energies when compared to canonical CCSDT, and, likewise, when computing the difference between CCSDT and CCSD(T). Finally, to highlight the low scaling of our algorithm, we present timings on linear alkanes (up to 30 carbons and 730 basis functions) and water clusters (up to 131 water molecules and 3144 basis functions).

Magneto-Stokes flow in a shallow free-surface annulus

In this study, we analyse ‘magneto-Stokes’ flow, a fundamental magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow that shares the cylindrical-annular geometry of the Taylor–Couette cell but uses applied electromagnetic forces to circulate a free-surface layer of electrolyte at low Reynolds numbers. The first complete, analytical solution for time-dependent magneto-Stokes flow is presented and validated with coupled laboratory and numerical experiments. Three regimes are distinguished (shallow-layer, transitional and deep-layer flow regimes), and their influence on the efficiency of microscale mixing is clarified. The solution in the shallow-layer limit belongs to a newly identified class of MHD potential flows, and thus induces mixing without the aid of axial vorticity. We show that these shallow-layer magneto-Stokes flows can still augment mixing in distinct Taylor dispersion and advection-dominated mixing regimes. The existence of enhanced mixing across all three distinguished flow regimes is predicted by asymptotic scaling laws and supported by three-dimensional numerical simulations. Mixing enhancement is initiated with the least electromagnetic forcing in channels with order-unity depth-to-gap-width ratios. If the strength of the electromagnetic forcing is not a constraint, then shallow-layer flows can still yield the shortest mixing times in the advection-dominated limit. Our robust description of momentum evolution and mixing of passive tracers makes the annular magneto-Stokes system fit for use as an MHD reference flow.

Beurling-Selberg extremization and modular bootstrap at high energies

We consider previously derived upper and lower bounds on the number of operators in a window of scaling dimensions [\Delta - \delta,\Delta + \delta] [ Δ − δ , Δ + δ ] at asymptotically large \Delta Δ in 2d unitary modular invariant CFTs. These bounds depend on a choice of functions that majorize and minorize the characteristic function of the interval [\Delta - \delta,\Delta + \delta] [ Δ − δ , Δ + δ ] and have Fourier transforms of finite support. The optimization of the bounds over this choice turns out to be exactly the Beurling-Selberg extremization problem, widely known in analytic number theory. We review solutions of this problem and present the corresponding bounds on the number of operators for any \delta \geq 0 δ ≥ 0 . When 2\delta \in \mathbb Z_{\geq 0} 2 δ ∈ ℤ ≥ 0 the bounds are saturated by known partition functions with integer-spaced spectra. Similar results apply to operators of fixed spin and Virasoro primaries in c>1 c > 1 theories.

Novel features of attractors and transseries in nonconformal Bjorken flows

In this work we investigate the impact of conformal symmetry breaking on hydrodynamization of a far-from-equilibrium fluid. We find a new kind of transseries solutions for the nonconformal hydrodynamic equations of a longitudinal boost invariant expanding plasma. The new transseries solutions unveil a rich physical structure which arises due to the interplay of different physical scales. In the perfect fluid case the nonconformal speed of sound slows down the cooling of the temperature due to the emergence of logarithmic corrections that depends on the mass of the particle. Further, these terms propagate into the perturbative and nonperturbative sectors of the transseries once viscous corrections are included. The logarithmic mass contributions increase the asymptotic value of the Knudsen number while decreasing the damping rate of the transient nonhydrodynamic modes and thus, yielding to an extremely slow hydrodynamization process where flow lines merge to their forward attractor at extremely late times. The early time free streaming expansion is modified and receives logarithmic mass corrections induced by the shear-bulk couplings. The global flow structure and numerical analyses carried out in our work demonstrate the existence of local attraction at early and late times for the shear viscous tensor and bulk viscous pressure.

Geometric decoherence time in Lindbladian dynamics

The onset of decoherence in open many-body systems lacks a dynamical timescale grounded in the loss of bipartite entanglement. Here, we introduce the geometric decoherence time, defined as the earliest moment the monotone relation between logarithmic negativity and Rényi-$\frac{1}{2}$ entropy—exactly equal across any bipartition for pure states—breaks down under open-system evolution, signaling entropy growth without accompanying entanglement growth. We establish this criterion in both single-particle Gaussian dynamics and many-body Lindbladian evolution. We show that quantum mutual information provides a complementary long-time diagnostic: Its asymptotic vanishing is equivalent to factorization of the steady state across the bipartition, a condition strictly stronger than separability, and whenever a product steady state is approached exponentially in trace norm, negativity and mutual information share the same decay rate. In the presence of a strong symmetry, this tracking can fail—residual classical correlations can survive after entanglement has vanished. In the Kitaev chain with balanced gain and loss, we derive a closed-form solution and show that the topological phase sustains longer coherence times than the trivial phase at identical dissipation, with a local minimum at the chiral-symmetric point. In the interacting XXZ chain, exact many-body evolution shows that local 𝑍 dephasing preserves residual classical correlations, whereas gain and loss restore the mutual-information tracking of negativity. Furthermore, our results establish the geometric decoherence time as a dynamical scale tracking the onset of decoherence.

Exact WKB and the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve for 4d $N$ = 2 pure SU(3) Yang-Mills. Abelianization

We investigate the exact WKB method for the quantum Seiberg-Witten curve of 4d N = 2 pure SU(3) Yang-Mills in the language of abelianization. The relevant differential equation is a third-order equation on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with two irregular singularities. We employ the exact WKB method to study the solutions to such a third-order equation and the associated Stokes phenomena. We also investigate the exact quantization condition for a certain spectral problem. Moreover, exact WKB analysis leads us to consider new Darboux coordinates on a moduli space of flat SL(3,$\mathbb{C}$)-connections. In particular, in the weak coupling region we encounter coordinates of the higher length-twist type generalizing Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates. The Darboux coordinates are conjectured to admit asymptotic expansions given by the formal quantum periods series and we perform numerical analysis supporting this conjecture.
