Energy and power quality measurement for electrical distribution in AC and DC microgrid buildings

Today's selection of DC microgrid buildings features a diverse set of electrical topologies and turnkey solutions, each with specific design trade-offs and optimizations. Designers desperately need standardized metrics and procedures for measurement and verification (M&V) to analyze and compare the advantages of each DC solution to traditional AC building networks. This work develops M&V procedures for quantifying and comparing the energy efficiency and power quality in buildings. To calculate full-building efficiency, this work introduces the measurement-informed modeling method, a procedure that develops and refines a building's energy model with metered data. To quantify power quality, this work defines a new voltage quality index that applies to both AC and DC buildings. This article describes the equipment, instrumentation, and operation necessary to calculate the efficiency and power quality. It then demonstrates these methods with a set of field tests. We report these M&V procedures can ultimately be used to compare and improve the efficiency and power quality of various DC topologies.

The impacts of convex piecewise linear cost formulations on AC optimal power flow

Despite strong connections through shared application areas, research efforts on power market optimization (e.g., unit commitment) and power network optimization (e.g., optimal power flow) remain largely independent. A notable illustration of this is the treatment of power generation cost functions, where nonlinear network optimization has largely used polynomial representations and market optimization has adopted piecewise linear encodings. This work combines state-of-the-art results from both lines of research to understand the best mathematical formulations of the nonlinear AC optimal power flow problem with piecewise linear generation cost functions. An extensive numerical analysis of non-convex models, linear approximations, and convex relaxations across fifty-four realistic test cases illustrates that nonlinear optimization methods are surprisingly sensitive to the mathematical formulation of piecewise linear functions. The results indicate that a poor formulation choice can slow down algorithm performance by a factor of ten, increasing the runtime from seconds to minutes. Furthermore, these results provide valuable insights into the best formulations of nonlinear optimal power flow problems with piecewise linear cost functions, an important step towards building a new generation of energy markets that incorporate the nonlinear AC power flow model.

Ab-initio predictions of phase stability, electronic structure, and optical properties of (0001)-MAX surfaces in M 2 AC (M = Cr, Zr, Hf; A = Al, Ga)

In this work, we report MAX phases' surface properties, which are essential for thin-film technology due to their excellent resistance to high-temperature oxidation, corrosion, and wear. The surface stability, electronic, and optical properties of 0001-surfaces in M 2 AC (M = Zr, Hf, Cr; A = Al, Ga) are investigated and compared with their bulk counterparts. The interplay between chemical bonding and charge distribution is discussed from electronic structure, including the Fermi surfaces. Four possible (0001)-terminated surfaces are considered by breaking M - C and M-A bonds in which cleavage energy of M - C is higher than M-A. The Cr–Al bond in Cr 2 AlC is stronger than other M-A bonds. The charge density of valance A-p electrons redistributes in the surface area, distinct from that of the bulk. The A- and M(C)-terminated (0001)-surfaces are the most stable and energetically favorable terminations due to lower surface energies. The optical properties of the most stable (0001)-surfaces were also investigated to understand the dielectric and photoconductive behavior in the (0001)-terminated surfaces of M 2 AC.

Resistive AC-Coupled Silicon Detectors: principles of operation and first results from a combined analysis of beam test and laser data

This paper presents the principles of operation of Resistive AC-Coupled Silicon Detectors (RSDs) and measurements of the temporal and spatial resolutions using a combined analysis of laser and beam test data. RSDs are a new type of n-in-p silicon sensor based on the Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) technology, where the n+ implant has been designed to be resistive, and the read-out is obtained via AC-coupling. The truly innovative feature of RSD is that the signal generated by an impinging particle is shared isotropically among multiple read-out pads without the need for floating electrodes or an external magnetic field. Careful tuning of the coupling oxide thickness and the n+ doping profile is at the basis of the successful functioning of this device. Several RSD matrices with different pad width-pitch geometries have been extensively tested with a laser setup in the Laboratory for Innovative Silicon Sensors in Torino, while a smaller set of devices have been tested at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility with a 120 GeV/c proton beam. The measured spatial resolution ranges between 2.5μm for 70–100 pad-pitch geometry and 17μm with 200–500 matrices, a factor of 10 better than what is achievable in binary read-out (bin size/12). Beam test data show a temporal resolution of ~40ps for 200 μm pitch devices, in line with the best performances of LGAD sensors at the same gain.

Improvement of the AC orbit bump method of local kick factor measurement using reference bunches

Here we have improved the AC orbit bump technique of local kick factor measurement. This technique, developed at NSLS-II a few years ago, is based on local sine-wave excitation of the electron beam by four fast correctors adjacent to the impedance location. By implementing reference bunches and the time gate function of beam position monitors, we are now able to measure the AC orbits of bunches with different intensities simultaneously. This improvement allows us to obtain the impedance-driven orbit distortion in a single measurement, significantly improving the measurement accuracy and reducing the measurement time.

Evaluation of 134 Ce as a PET imaging surrogate for antibody drug conjugates incorporating 225 Ac

The in vivo generator 134 Ce/ 134 La has the potential to serve as a PET imaging surrogate for both alpha-emitting 225 Ac and 227 Th radionuclides due to the unique Ce III /Ce IV redox couple and the relatively long half-life of 134 Ce. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to demonstrate the compatibility of 134 Ce with DOTA-based antibody drug conjugates, which would act as therapeutic agents when incorporating 225 Ac.

Condition monitoring of permanent magnet AC machines for all-electric transportation systems: State of the art

The current state of the art on emerging and efficient techniques for condition monitoring of permanent magnet (PM) alternating-current (AC) machines deployed in electric vehicle (EV) applications is presented. The discussion includes the most common and specific types of faults in PM motors, such as rotor demagnetisation and stator inter-turn faults, respectively. Fault indicators, such as voltage (v s ) and current (i s ) signals and machine signatures based on motor back electromotive force (EMF) (E B ) and magnetic flux (φ), are taken into account as a measuring quantity in diagnosing motor faults. Other signatures, including thermal analysis, acoustic noise, and vibrations, are also illustrated as some of the emerging techniques in estimating the performance of EV motors while under operations. In addition, various fault modelling methods, condition monitoring techniques, and comprehensive approaches applied in diagnosing the effect of machine faults during its incipient stages are illustrated. Since most of the fault diagnostic techniques discussed here include only machine-based quantities as fault indices/indicators, the provided solutions are therefore found to be more reliable and accurate for diagnosing the motor faults. This comprehensive review study is inclusive of the existing fault diagnostic techniques, which are currently employed in industrial and commercial practices, in addition to the new methodologies proposed by the authors. All the given condition monitoring schemes therefore seem significantly vital in estimating the state of health of PM AC machines while under operation in all-electric transportation systems.

A new approach to the design of surface subsystems of polymeric insulators for HV and MV apparatus under AC voltage

The design of high voltage and medium voltage AC and DC standoff insulators, and, in general, of insulation systems where surface and interface properties are predominant factors, is based on specifications and standards that rely upon long-term experiences and lab testing. Surface insulating properties depend on electrical and thermal stresses, besides environmental factors, and the inception of extrinsic ageing phenomena, such as partial discharges, can be already a cause of reduced reliability and premature failure (for organic insulating materials). An innovative approach, based on field simulation, discharge modelling, and partial discharge inception measurements is presented by the authors, which can establish a solid basis to optimise insulation design for any type of supply voltage waveform. This method, the three-leg approach, is applied here to a cable system under AC sinusoidal voltage, but it can work for any type of insulation system, such as bushings, switch gears, transformers, rotating machines, and power electronics boards.

Spin dynamics and relaxation in 7.6 nm thin film of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 /SrTiO 3 : ac magnetic susceptibility and magnetic viscosity investigations

Analysis of the results from our investigations of the temperature dependence of ac susceptibilities (χ' and χ'') and magnetic viscosity in a 7.6 nm thin film of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 grown on SrTiO 3 (001) substrate is presented. The Curie temperature (T C ) of this film is magnetic field (H) dependent, varying as [T C (H) - T C (0)] ~ H n with T C (0) = 270 K and n = 0.15. Temperature dependence of χ' and χ'' measured at ac frequencies f m in the range of 0.1–10 kHz shows a broad peak near 230 K associated with the blocking temperature (T B ) of spin clusters present in the 1.4 nm surface layer and a frequency dependent peak near 270 K associated with T C . The mean relaxation time τ determined from the Cole–Cole analysis of the temperature dependent χ' and χ'' is shown to fit the Vogel–Fulcher law: τ = τ 0 exp[ΔE/k B (T - T 0 )] with T 0 = 245 K, ΔE/k B = 270 K = T C and τ 0 = 1.2 x 10 -9 s. Magnetic viscosity S (measured in H = 0 for a sample cooled in H = 50 Oe) determined from the fit to the magnetization: M (t)= M (0) – S ln t, with time t up to 2 h, shows a peak at 230 K above which M (2 h) switches to negative values for temperatures up to T C (0). It is argued that this negative magnetization results from an interaction between the superparamagnetic spin clusters and the ferromagnetic phase, both being present in the temperature range of T B < T < T C .

Frequency-dependent sensitivity of AC elastocaloric effect measurements explored through analytical and numerical models

We present a comprehensive study of the frequency-dependent sensitivity for measurements of the AC elastocaloric effect by applying both exactly soluble models and numerical methods to the oscillating heat flow problem. These models reproduce the finer details of the thermal transfer functions observed in experiments, considering here representative data for single-crystal Ba(Fe1−xCox)2As2. Based on our results, we propose a set of practical guidelines for experimentalists using this technique. This work establishes a baseline against which the frequency response of the AC elastocaloric technique can be compared and provides intuitive explanations of the detailed structure observed in experiments.

AC electrical transport detection of magnetic properties of small, granular, and heterogeneous samples

Experimental constraints and sample limitations can preclude ideal measurements of electrical transport properties of materials. In such situations, AC electrical transport methods are often employed due to a significant increase in signal-to-noise ratio they can provide. However, dynamic effects that are not often accounted for may be present that may modify the signals in these measurements. In particular, dynamic filtering effects are prominent in small, granular, and heterogeneous materials. We demonstrate that a lock-in amplifier based circuit can distinguish between these DC transport and AC filtering effects. Here, we further demonstrate that this filtering can reveal distinct signatures of magnetic transitions while providing a measure of sample quality.

Electron kinetics in a positive column of AC discharges in a dynamic regime

Abstract We have performed hybrid kinetic-fluid simulations of a positive column in alternating current (AC) argon discharges over a range of driving frequencies f and gas pressure p for the conditions when the spatial nonlocality of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) is substantial. Our simulations confirmed that the most efficient conditions of plasma maintenance are observed in the dynamic regime when time modulations of mean electron energy (temperature) are substantial. The minimal values of the root mean square electric field and the electron temperature have been observed at f/p values of about 3 kHz Torr −1 in a tube of radius R = 1 cm. The ionization rate and plasma density reached maximal values under these conditions. The numerical solution of a kinetic equation allowed accounting for the kinetic effects associated with spatial and temporal nonlocality of the EEDF. Using the kinetic energy of electrons as an independent variable, we solved an anisotropic tensor diffusion equation in phase space. We clarified the role of different flux components during electron diffusion in phase space over surfaces of constant total energy. We have shown that the kinetic theory uncovers a more exciting and rich physics than the classical ambipolar diffusion (Schottky) model. Non-monotonic radial distributions of excitation rates, metastable densities, and plasma density have been observed in our simulations at pR > 6 Torr cm. The predicted off-axis plasma density peak in the dynamic regime has never been observed in experiments so far. We hope our results stimulate further experimental studies of the AC positive column. The kinetic analysis could help uncover new physics even for such a well-known plasma object as a positive column in noble gases.

Characterization of BNL and HPK AC-LGAD sensors with a 120 GeV proton beam

We present measurements of AC-LGADs performed at the Fermilab's test beam facility using 120 GeV protons. Here we studied the performance of various strip and pad AC-LGAD sensors that were produced by BNL and HPK. The measurements are performed with our upgraded test beam setup that utilizes a high precision telescope tracker, and a simultaneous readout of up to 7 channels per sensor, which allows detailed studies of signal sharing characteristics. These measurements allow us to assess the differences in designs between different manufacturers, and optimize them based on experimental performance. We then study several reconstruction algorithms to optimize position and time resolutions that utilize the signal sharing properties of each sensor. We present a world's first demonstration of silicon sensors in a test beam that simultaneously achieve better than 6–10 μm position and 30 ps time resolution. This represents a substantial improvement to the spatial resolution than would be obtained with binary readout of sensors with similar pitch.

Soft Switching Over the Entire Line Cycle for a Quadruple Active Bridge DCX in a DC to Three-Phase AC Module

This paper is focused on a transformer-isolated quadruple active bridge (QAB) dc-dc converter loaded by three full-bridge dc-ac inverters. The QAB functions as a "DC trans-former" (DCX) in the dc-to-three-phase ac module. The QAB outputs provide time-varying power at twice the line frequency, which presents challenges in maintaining zero voltage switching (ZVS) on the secondary sides during low-power portions of the line cycle. It is shown how ZVS can be achieved in a phase, even at zero-power transfer, using a relatively small circulating current provided by the magnetizing inductance of the high-frequency transformer. The approach is particularly effective in high-voltage applications using SiC MOSFETs, where reductions in switching loss outweigh additional conduction losses due to the circulating currents. A detailed analysis of ZVS switching waveforms at the zero power transfer is presented, including effects of nonlinear device capacitances. Analytical expressions are given for the optimal values of the magnetizing inductance and dead times of the QAB primary and secondary bridges. The approach is verified by experimental results on a 600 V, 4 kW prototype, demonstrating greater than 98.5% efficiency from 1 kW to 4 kW, with a peak efficiency of 99.0%. Compared to conventionally operated prototype, a 54% reduction in total loss is achieved at rated power.

A Novel Three-Phase Oak Ridge AC / DC Converter for Wireless EV Charger Applications

In this paper, a novel three-phase converter is proposed for ac to dc wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for electric vehicle (EV) charging applications. The proposed innovative solution, called as Oak Ridge Converter, reduces the design complexity and cost by eliminating the front-end converter stage compared to the conventional systems. Additionally, grid side requirements can be met with the proposed creative concept. In this concept, the three-phase single-stage Oak Ridge Converter directly converts the 60 Hz grid frequency into high-frequency voltage and utilizes hybrid grid-source and high-frequency to realize power transfer from AC source through resonant network and coupling coils to the battery load. Design and Demonstration of an 850 V dc to 13.8 kV ac 100 kW Three-phase Four-wire Power Conditioning System Converter Using 10 kV SiC MOSFETs

In this paper, an 850 V dc to 13.8 kV ac 100 kW modular multilevel three-phase four-wire dc/ac converter based on 10 kV SiC MOSFETs is designed and demonstrated. The design considerations of key components, including the dc-link, device cooling, gate driver, isolated gate driver power supply (GDPS), medium voltage (MV) ac filter inductor, MV and medium frequency transformer, and the mechanical design are discussed. Two converters are designed, and two prototypes are developed, to study the converter paralleling operation and scalability. Both converters are fully tested up to their voltage and power ratings. However, the two converters are not identical. Based on the design and test results of the first converter, the MV power stage, transformer design, GDPS, as well as the low voltage power stage in the second converter are improved for smaller size and/or higher efficiency. Compared to the version 1 converter, the version 2 converter achieves 49% volume reduction and 2 percentage point efficiency improvement, with a peak efficiency of 98.4% at the rated power.

A 1MHz Oak Ridge AC / DC Converter for UAV Contactless Charger Implementation

In this paper, a 1 MHz single-phase Oak Ridge Converter (ORC) AC/DC wireless power transfer (WPT) system is introduced for unmanned air vehicle (UAV) charging applications. The proposed advanced solution eliminates the design, weight, volume, and the cost of the power factor correcting (PFC) front-end rectifier compared to the conventional practices. Additionally, grid power quality requirements can be achieved with the presented innovative idea. With this method, single stage WPT primary side uses the hybrid grid frequency and high frequency (60 Hz and 1 MHZ) from ac source through the coupler coils and to UAV battery with GaN FETs. Experimental results of the single-phase system is presented to confirm the mathematical analyses with the source voltage of 110 VAC, RMS and output voltage of 40 VDC at 1 kW power with 6 inches air gap between couplers. The primary coupler consists of a ferrite-backed single-turn coil with a radius of 1.5 ft, and the secondary coupler is made with an air-core single-turn coil with radius of 1.2 ft. The system overall ac to dc efficiency is measured 77 % acquiring 0.99 power factor (PF) and 3.3 % current total harmonic distortion (THD) at 1 kW power.

Net Load Redistribution Attacks on Nodal Voltage Magnitude Estimation in AC Distribution Networks

A high penetration level of smart devices and communication networks increases the threat of cyber-attacks in the distribution system. In this paper, we model a hidden, coordinated, net load redistribution attack (NLRA) in an AC distribution system. Based on local information of an attack region, the attacker’s goal is to create violations in nodal voltage magnitude estimation. Acting as a system operator equipped with global AC state estimation and bad data detection, we validate the stealthiness of the hidden NLRA in multiple attack cases. Simulation results on a modified PG&E 69-node distribution system show the validity of the proposed NLRA. The influence of NLRA on the distribution system is assessed and the impact of attack regions, attack timing, and system observability is also revealed.
