Analysis of Tempered Fractional Operators

Tempered fractional operators are useful in models for subsurface transport and diffusion due to their ability to capture anomalous diffusion: a behavior which the classical partial differential equation models cannot describe. We analyze tempered fractional operators within the nonlocal vector calculus framework in order to assimilate them to the rigorous mathematical structure developed for nonlocal models. First, we show they are special instances of generalized nonlocal operators in correspondence of a proper choice of nonlocal kernels. Then, we work towards showing tempered fractional operators are equivalent to truncated fractional operators. These truncated operators are useful because they are less computationally intensive than the tempered operators.

Large-scale experimental validation of thermochemical water-splitting oxides discovered by defect graph neural networks

Thermochemical water-splitting (TCH) based on 2-step thermal redox cycles in metal oxides is a promising approach to generating H 2 , but state-of-the-art (SOTA) CeO 2 has several practical limitations, which has motivated continued materials discovery efforts in this field. Here, in this study, we improve upon a SOTA defect graph neural network (dGNN) surrogate model's oxygen vacancy predictions and combine them with materials project phase diagrams to down-select and discover structurally diverse, experimentally known metal oxides whose TCH performance was previously unknown. Amongst twelve candidates selected based on our high-throughput screening and down-selection criteria, we achieved ∼80% accuracy in identifying materials with stable redox cycling and hydrogen production in stagnation flow reactor water-splitting experiments. Closer to 100% accuracy can be achieved if higher-accuracy, hybrid DFT-predicted vacancy formation energies were computed and used in lieu of the most uncertain dGNN-based screening predictions, as they correct false positives to true negatives. Notably, two discovered candidates, Sr 3 PrMn 2 O 8 and Ba 2 Fe 2 O 5 , display hydrogen yields greater than CeO 2 under specific redox conditions. In conclusion, these results demonstrate our ability to computationally predict and experimentally validate promising candidate TCH materials that have the potential to compete with CeO 2 .

Classical and quantum compression for edge computing: the ubiquitous data dimensionality reduction

Edge computing aims to address the challenges associated with communicating and transferring large amounts of data generated remotely to a data center in a timely and efficient manner. A central pillar of edge computing is local (i.e., at- or near-source) data processing capability so that data transfer to a data center for processing can be minimized. Data compression at the edge is therefore a natural component of edge workflows. Here we present a survey of data compression algorithms with a focus on edge computing. Not all compression algorithms can accommodate the data type heterogeneity, tight processing and communication time constraints, or energy efficiency requirement characteristics of edge computing. We discuss specific examples of compression algorithms that are being explored in the context of edge computing. We end our review with a brief survey of emerging quantum compression techniques that are of importance in quantum information processing, including the proposed concept of quantum edge computing.

A Review of Machine Learning Classification Using Quantum Annealing for Real-World Applications

Optimizing the training of a machine learning pipeline helps in reducing training costs and improving model performance. One such optimizing strategy is quantum annealing, which is an emerging computing paradigm that has shown potential in optimizing the training of a machine learning model. The implementation of a physical quantum annealer has been realized by D-wave systems and is available to the research community for experiments. Recent experimental results on a variety of machine learning applications using quantum annealing have shown interesting results where the performance of classical machine learning techniques is limited by limited training data and high dimensional features. This article explores the application of D-wave’s quantum annealer for optimizing machine learning pipelines for real-world classification problems. Finally, we review the application domains on which a physical quantum annealer has been used to train machine learning classifiers. We discuss and analyze the experiments performed on the D-Wave quantum annealer for applications such as image recognition, remote sensing imagery, computational biology, and particle physics. We discuss the possible advantages and the problems for which quantum annealing is likely to be advantageous over classical computation.

Multi-material hydrodynamics with algebraic sharp interface capturing

A finite volume method for Eulerian multi-material hydrodynamics with sharp interface capturing is presented here. The pressure-temperature non-equilibrium multi-material system with finite-rate pressure relaxation in mixed-cells is considered here. This pressure closure facilitates material-property-dependent pressure relaxation, rather than instantaneous pressure equilibration, which in turn allows the use of unsplit high-order time-integrators. A modified tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) method is used to reconstruct multi-material (> 2) interfaces, on three-dimensional unstructured meshes. A simple modification which extends the THINC reconstruction to interfaces between more than two materials is proposed. It is demonstrated that the modified THINC can capture multi-material interfaces within 2–4 tetrahedral cells. Since no geometric reconstructions are required by the THINC method, the presented multi-material method is algorithmically simple, and computationally efficient. Consistent reconstructions of conserved quantities at material interfaces ensure that conservation and closure laws are satisfied at the discrete level. Through a suite of test problems solved on unstructured meshes, it is demonstrated that the presented method is a promising candidate for accurate and efficient multi-material hydrodynamics computations.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego User Manual - Version 4.56

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.
