The GISS Research Publications document was initiated in 1992 as an annual summary of our research based on quick inexpensive reproduction of excerpts of published papers. Its aim is twofold: to communicate in and outside the GISS community what we do and how we got about it, as well as to record annual accomplishments, providing a continual basis for measuring progress.
This project is an overview and analysis of the past ten years (2013 – present) in global spaceflight, highlighting the orbital launches of countries, particularly the failures that occurred, the reasons they occurred, and a breakdown of the related statistics and background information. The analysis is conducted from a perspective of reliability and maintainability engineering and Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) to formulate a quantifiable understanding of the data and how it is pertinent to Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) in spaceflight. There is a breakdown by country or group, timelines, and number of launches. The failures over the years are categorized, all given a broad analysis of subsystem failures and details of events. A few failures are given a more in-depth analysis of root causes and failure modes determined by their unique or common nature. The data is retrieved from online, publicly available sources.

Tropical cyclone (TC) track forecasts have improved greatly in recent decades, while intensity forecasts have struggled to improve at the same rate. As a result, there has been a focus in literature to attempt to better understand the processes that lead to TC intensification and especially TC rapid intensification (RI). Lightning has been studied as a tool to determine changes in TC intensity, but studied thus far have had conflicting results.

New York City (NYC) faces many challenges in the coming decades due to climate change and its interactions with social vulnerabilities and uneven urban development patterns and processes. This New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC) report contributes to the Panel’s mandate to advise the city on climate change and provide timely climate risk information that can inform flexible and equitable adaptation pathways that enhance resilience to climate change. This report presents up-to-date scientific information as well as updated sea level rise projections of record. We also present a new methodology related to climate extremes and describe new methods for developing the next generation of climate projections for the New York metropolitan region. Future work by the Panel should compare the temperature and precipitation projections presented in this report with a subset of models to determine the potential impact and relevance of the “hot model” problem. NPCC4 expects to establish new projections-of-record for precipitation and temperature in 2024 based on this comparison and additional analysis. Nevertheless, the temperature and precipitation projections presented in this report may be useful for NYC stakeholders in the interim as they rely on the newest generation of global climate models.
Changes in tropical tropospheric ozone (TTO) are of importance because this region spans roughly a third of the Earth and portions of it are experiencing variability in trends of ozone precursors (CO, NO x , CH 4 and nonmethane hydrocarbons) associated with economic growth and fires. In addition to ozone changes affecting radiative forcing, tropical ozone is an important source of the OH radical and thus, the oxidizing capacity of the planet (Thompson, 1992). Recent studies examining TTO trends satellite and in-situ observations over the past ~25 years include: Thompson et al., JGR, 2021; Gaudel et al., ACP, 2023; Stauffer et al., ACP, 2023. The results show considerable regional and seasonal variability in TTO trends and sensitivity to data selection, frequency, and statistical method used. The satellite data vary most widely in method, time period and reliability. Here we revisit trends for the 1990-2022 period with the best-characterized buv-based satellite products that span that period (derived from TOMS and OMI, Ziemke et al., 2019). The satellite-based trends are compared to trends based on in-situ data from the Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesondes (SHADOZ) network (1998-2022), measurements from selected pre-SHADOZ and IAGOS commercial aircraft data (Gaudel et al., 2023). Among sensitivities examined are the dependence of ozone trends on start and end years, impacts of ENSO events and the COVID-19 perturbation to emissions. Two statistical methods are used, quantile regression (QR) and multiple linear regression (MLR). Trends of total TTO, ozone segments in the boundary layer (to ~700 hPa), and free troposphere (700-300 hPa) are compared.
