Study of recirculating liquid fuel in a 1D critical stationary system

Several studies have been conducted to investigate the physics of liquid fuel reactors, showing also applications with molten salts. A liquid nuclear fuel implies changes in the neutron balance equation to take into account the precursors' displacement and the emission of delayed neutrons in a different position than at the original fission. This requires to upgrade the computer codes normally used to calculate nuclear reactors using only solid fuel. In this work, we revisit a simple problem with liquid fuel, which is proposed for the verification of the numerical solutions obtained by advanced computer codes. This problem studies criticality with constant coefficients, thus neglecting thermal feedback. We elaborate on the analytical solution of the problem, deriving also a generalized eigenvalue problem by finite-volume integration over the cells of a discretized mesh to study the evolution of the dominance ratio with fuel velocity. Finally, we investigate the influence of the fuel velocity on the reactivity of the system. (authors)

Photoelectrochemically Self Improving Si/GaN Photocathode: Figure 1d Raw Data

Fig1d results were obtained using a 3-electrode configuration with IrOx as the counter electrode and saturated calomel electrode as the reference electrode. Two Si/GaN photocathodes were compared. Sample #1 (named as S#1) was the as-received sample, and sample #2 (named as S#2) was CA tested for 4 hours under same testing conditions described in Fig.1a. The PEC performance (J-V curve) was recorded for both samples. Then a photodeposition of Pt was performed on both samples, each loading time was set to be 5 minutes, then the J-V curve was recorded to track the changes of the performance. The Pt photodeposition was stopped until the J-V curve won't shift (the maximum onset potential was achieved). The results show that, S#1 needs at least 20 minutes of Pt photodeposition to achieve its best PEC performance while S#2, which is after CA testing, only needs 5 minutes of Pt photodeposition to achieve its best PEC performance.

Selecting 1D projections for 2D tomography reconstruction

Previous works on reconstructing the 4D phase space using tomography require optimal selection of projection views to achieve accurate reconstruction. In 2D reconstruction, the process is straightforward, as an object can be evenly sampled by dividing the angles evenly. However, extending this concept from 2D to 4D is not intuitive. This work demonstrates that quaternions can be used to more effectively describe views in 4D and introduces the Fibonacci Flower algorithm and repulsive force algorithm to evenly space views in 4D space in order to achieve higher reconstruction accuracy.

1D Modeling for the Development of a Digital Twin for Hydropower Systems with Applications for a Testing Rig

Modeling and simulation constitute two important parts in constructing a sensible digital twin to mimic the dynamics of hydropower systems. Because of the physical nature of a hydropower system, the basic modeling should cover the water flow systems from the reservoir to the penstock (inlet water pipes), penstock to hydro turbine, and hydro turbine to generator and from the linkage of the hydropower systems to the grid. This report describes initial attempts to model these dynamic components, including the formulation of the linearized state space model for hydro turbine systems using the well-known six-coefficients linearization method and the formulation of the voltage and power dynamical models of a synchronous generator. To validate the accuracy of the proposed model, data collected from Norwegian University of Science and Technology were used to obtain relevant parameters for the model, and the desired simulation results were obtained. Additionally, neural network modeling and learning were also developed and applied to model the generation torque and water flow rate subsystems to demonstrate a potential learning scheme, which can be used in the development of a digital twin.

Optimization of the artificial viscosity in Lagrangian staggered discretization codes. Modeling 1D stand-alone shock - case study

We have developed new measures of errors for numerical shock. The new approach is based on analysis of the structure function, and separation of the errors related to oscillations and shock width, which also include error in the position of the ”center” of the numerical shock. We have demonstrated that those measures correctly characterize the numerical solution. We introduced an objective function in, which both types of errors are weighted, and presented optimal values of the coefficients of the linear and quadratic viscosity for different weights and different Mach numbers.

Advancing 1D thermo-hydraulic tools for large cryogenic facilities

The Cryogenic Division at Fermilab develops large-scale cryogenic systems for particle accelerators and superconducting test facilities. To support design and diagnostics, a Python-based code was created to calculate pressure drops in components such as valves and pipes. This paper presents recent enhancements to the code, including new heat transfer functions that improve the accuracy of thermal and hydraulic predictions. The first application models pressure and temperature changes in PIP-II relief pipes, aiding pipe sizing and protecting relief valves. The second example analyzes heat load evolution in a pipe carrying sub-atmospheric helium, helping interpret temperature sensor data and understand gas return behavior to cold compressors. These improvements significantly expand the tool’s capabilities, offering a practical resource for designing and troubleshooting cryogenic systems under dynamic thermal and flow conditions.
