Mapping the Microhardness of Al Matrix in U-7Mo/Al Dispersion Fuels at Medium and High Burn-up by in situ Nanoindentation

The mechanical degradation of the Al matrix in U-7Mo dispersion fuels was detected after irradiation in previous studies, but more details of the degradation mechanism are not clear yet to clarify the root cause. In this study, microhardness mapping in fresh and irradiated U-7Mo dispersion fuels coated with ZrN, with burn-up of 3.35 × 10 21 and 6.28 × 10 21 f/cm 3 , are measured to reveal the hardening of the Al matrix as a function of distance to fuel particles. Micro cubes were pulled by plasma focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy and tested by in situ nanoindenter with Berkovitch tip. Size effects are measured in medium and high burn-up samples. The higher burn-up specimen exhibits a more pronounced size effect when indent load is lower than 20 mN. Size effect correction models are also calculated by plots fitting, which predicts the true microhardness without size effect. Results shows that the hardness of the Al matrix near the ZrN coating has the highest value, then decreases moving away from the coating and become stable when the distance reaches ∼10 µm. The hardness starts increasing again getting closer to the next fuel particle, which makes the hardness distribution between two fuel particles to be “U” shape.

Boron Nitride-Driven Strengthening of Aluminum Composites via Friction Stir Processing

Friction stir welding and processing (FSW/P) has emerged as an effective solid-state joining technique for fabricating metal matrix composites (MMCs), offering improved mechanical properties through refined microstructural evolution. In this study, an aluminum-boron nitride nanoparticle (Al-BNNP) composite was synthesized via FSW, and its indentation-based mechanical properties were systematically evaluated. Microhardness mapping across the weld cross-section revealed a progressive increase in hardness toward the stir zone (SZ), attributed to severe plastic deformation, dynamic recrystallization (DRX), and the reinforcing effect of BNNPs. Profilometry-based indentation plastometry (PIP) inferred yield strength (YS) demonstrates a 47.8% increase compared to the base metal (BM) and a 75% improvement compared to FSP pure aluminum reported in literature. This enhancement is attributed to strengthening mechanisms, including grain boundary pinning, load transfer, and increased dislocation density. The strain rate sensitivity (SRS) measurements at the nanoscale demonstrated a substantial decrease in the SZ, correlated with ultrafine grain structures and strong BNNP-matrix interactions. Activation volume analysis revealed a significant reduction in the SZ, suggesting that dislocation motion is increasingly restricted by dislocation-dislocation and dislocation-particle interactions. These findings suggest that incorporating BNNPs in FSW/P enables tailoring the microstructure without thermal degradation of the secondary particles, thereby significantly enhancing the mechanical performance of aluminum composites, particularly for structural applications in aerospace and automotive industries.

ER4047 Filler Wire Development - Initial Studies

This report describes the results of bead on pipe welding trials for the purpose of evaluating commercial off the shelf (COTS) 0.047” ER4047 filler material vendors for down selection of the of best candidate filler material for future Gas-metal Arc Welding (GMAW) development efforts. Four candidate COTS ER4047 filler wires were evaluated during this work - Astrolite, Alcotec, Hobart, and Lincoln. The storage condition of each of these filler wires was documented and visual inspection was performed.
